Description
The Des Moines Civil & Human Rights Commission launched the Breaking Bread, Building Bridges initiative to see what happens when people take the time to converse with one another despite their differences.
While these dinner conversations took place before social distancing was necessary, we can learn from these experiences to help us better connect with our neighbors around us.

Opportunity
to
stop
just
kind
of
dialogue
with
people
that
you're
familiar
with
and
similar
to
and
really
step
out
and
have
a
conversation
with
people
that
is
different
and
really
challenge.
Not
only
how
people
see
me,
but
how
I
see
people
and
maybe
get
some
different
perspective
that
I
never
thought
about
before.
I
think
in
my
professional
life
I
interact
with
diverse
populations,
but
I
have
no
diversity
socially
and
personally
really
I
haven't
since
law
school
and
I
think
I
think
it's
good
for
a
person.

I
think
it's
good
to
know
your
neighbors
and
not
just
the
neighbors.
So
look
like
you
wanted
an
opportunity
to
hear
from
somebody
that
wasn't
like
me
getting
experience.
You
know
a
different
background,
different
different
experience
than
I
have.
I
think
it's
always
key.
Only
way
you
grow
as
a
person
is
if
you
get
different
experiences,
so
I
thought
this
is
a
perfect
opportunity
to
do
that.
So
the
opportunity
to
meet
someone
new
in
the
city
and
do
that
by
having
a
meal
would
be
was
kind
of
my
like
ideal
situation,
so
nothing
super
uncomfortable.

Really
easy
to
just
kind
of
keep
in
your
own
circles
of
people.
You
know
very
similar
to
you
and
thankfully
I
get
to
work
around
a
lot
of
people
who
are
different
than
me,
and
so
I
thought
it
would
just
be
a
really
good
opportunity
to
kind
of
meet
someone.
You
know
very
different,
but
also
just
see
you
know
see
kind
of
my
blind
spots
of
am
I
you
know
I
purposefully,
including
more
people
in
my
life
or
personally
excluding
people
in
my
life
because
of
differences
or
sameness.
O
I
don't
know
so
I
guess
just
just
to
try
that
experience
out.
I
guess
I
would
want
to
provide
just
a
mindset
to
where
people
don't
necessarily
judge
you
for
what
you
look
like,
but
kind
of
off
the
actions.
You
know
simple,
as
that,
I'm
an
older
white
woman
and
my
person
that
I'm
paired
up
with
is
a
younger
black
male.
He
was
a
football
player.
I've
never
actually
watched
a
football
game,
so
we
haven't.
O
We
had
a
lot
to
talk
about,
but
I
think
that
you
know
we're
both
caring
people
and
we
care
about
our
our
city
and
our
neighbors.
So
we
have
that
in
common-
hopefully
they
try
it.
You
just
never
know
who
you,
who
you
might
meet
come
a
little
bit
out
of
your
comfort
zone,
because
what
you'll
find
is
that
you're
gonna
find
probably
much
more
rich
relationships
and
more
interesting.

People
and
you'll
also
find
that
people
actually,
especially
in
iowa,
and
I
think
in
the
midwest
a
lot,
but
pretty
much
all
over
are
not
what
you
see
and
what's
played
on
the
tv.
Most
people
are
pretty
similar
and
have
a
lot
of
common
interests
in
values,
and
if
we
can
build
on
that,
I
think
that
is
why
you
should
do
this.
I
hope
that
in
the
future
we
get
more
risk
takers
and
more
and
it
doesn't
even
need
to
be
like
I'm,
a
known
risk
taker.

A
Background
and
that
came
through
pretty
clear
in
the
in
the
program
he
went
to
school
in
ward
2,
so
we
could
talk
about
the
neighborhood
and-
and
we
have
my
daughter,
graduated
from
the
same
university
that
he
did
so
it
was.
You
know
there
was
some
common
bond
there
that
we
could
talk
about
very
enjoyable.
A
I
think,
as
I
get
older,
and
I
have
a
thirteen-year-old-
that's
a
big
thing
going
on
in
my
house,
but
I
just
don't
understand,
and
so
I
think
it
is
it's
really
relevant
to
what's
going
on
right
now
and
to
assume
that
you
know
everything
about
everything
is
ridiculous.
That's
I
think
it's
time
to
stop.
You
know
moaning
and
complaining
and
actually
start
having
a
conversation,
and
I
think
it
doesn't
happen
at
the
executive
level
or
you
know,
congress
or
whatever.

I
really
believe
it
starts
with
everyday
people,
and
so
I
think
it's
a
good
place
start.
I
think
it
goes
back
to
my
experience
being
single
black
father
in
des
moines
iowa
growing
up
in
a
state,
the
city
where
a
lot
of
people
don't
look
like
me
and
overcoming
those
barriers,
but
at
the
same
time
you
know
given
maybe
giving
them
a
sense
of
the
other.
You
know
what
the
what
the
other
person's
experience
is
quote.
On
quote
man.
A
I
really
wanted
to
know
somebody
that
was
off
the
hinges
and
actually,
I
think
most
people
on
a
day-to-day
basis
really
would
just
want
to
be
able
to
put
food
on
the
table,
provide
a
good
life
for
themselves
and
even
better
life
for
their
children
and
pass
on
some
sort
of
legacy.
I
think
most
decent
individuals
want
that.
You
know
this
stuff
we
see
on
tv
is.
