Description
Oklahoma City Public Schools has launched an important initiative, 587-STOP, to combat bullying in our schools. Host Tierney Tinnin welcomes Tracy Alvarez, OKCPS Safe Schools Coordinator, to explain how the program will help provide safer schools for our kids. Tierney also welcomes Laura Buxton, OKCPS Gear Up Coordinator, to talk about how to get your students to college.
A
Welcome
to
the
maps
for
kinship
case,
I
want
to
start
today's
show
by
congratulating
daniel
buckmaster,
a
sixth-grade
science
teacher
at
belle-isle
enterprise
middle
school.
He
appeared
on
the
show.
Last
month
you
may
remember
he
discussed
his
role
as
the
2012-2013
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools
district
Teacher
of
the
Year,
and
then
in
July
Daniel
was
named
one
of
the
12
finalists
vying
for
the
title
of
Oklahoma
State
Teacher
of
the
Year.
He
will
compete
against
11
other
highly
qualified
teachers
to
represent
our
state.
A
The
winner
will
be
announced
in
September
and,
of
course
we
are
wishing
Daniel
the
best
of
luck.
Well,
in
the
past
few
months
we
have
touched
on
various
topics
from
partnerships
with
the
city
of
Oklahoma,
City,
new
academies
for
our
high
schools
in
the
school
district
and
taking
you
on
tours
inside
renovated
buildings.
Thanks
to
the
maps
for
kids
plan.
A
Well,
this
month
we're
starting
off
the
show
with
a
very
important
topic
and
a
new
initiative
for
the
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools,
and
it
addresses
bullying
the
Oklahoma
City
public
school
district
policy
defines
bullying
as
intentional
repeated
harmful
acts,
words
or
other
behaviors,
such
as
name-calling,
threatening,
and/or
shunning
committed
by
one
or
more
against
another.
Bullying
is
an
issue
not
just
in
Oklahoma
but
across
the
country.
The
Oklahoma
City
public
school
district
recognizes
that
and
has
implemented
a
hotline
and
online
reporting
system
to
help
address
the
issue
and
intervene
for
the
safety
of
our
students.
A
Today,
joining
us
on
the
master
cute
showcase
is
Tracy
Alvarez
she's,
a
safe
schools
coordinator
for
Oklahoma
City,
Public
Schools.
Thank
you
so
much
for
stopping
by
the
showcase.
Your
first
time
here
so
glad
to
have
you.
Thank
you.
It's
safe
to
say
that
ok,
CPS
is
not
immune
to
bullying
like
a
lot
of
schools.
We
do
experience
this,
but
what
kind
of
problem
do
we
really
have
in
the
school
district?
I?
Think.
B
We
have
a
large
number
of
bullying
incidents
reported,
but
when
we
start
investigating
those
incidents,
what
we
really
learn
is
that
we
have
a
lot
of
parents
who
have
heard
the
word
bullying
a
lot
of
kids,
who've
heard
or
bullying,
but
they
don't
really
understand
what
bullying
means.
So,
while
we
do
have
some
real
incidents
of
bullying,
we
also
have
a
lot
of
conflict.
That's
mislabeled
as
bullying,
so.
A
B
Whenever
you
are
dealing
with
bullying,
there
are
three
main
things
that
you
have
to
have
for
a
situation
to
really
be
a
bullying
incident.
There's
an
imbalance
of
power
that
imbalance
of
power
could
be
a
like,
regular
red
kid
and
a
special
LED
kit,
a
big
kid
and
a
little
kid,
a
teacher,
a
student.
It
could
be
a
racial
imbalance.
So
there's
any
number
of
things
that
could
constitute
an
imbalance
of
power.
B
What
you
see
is
there's
an
equal
power,
so
it
may
just
be
a
couple
of
boys
in
the
third
grade
that
are
playing
football
after
lunch
and
and
they
get
into
a
conflict
on
the
football
field.
It's
something
that
may
be
accidental,
like
I
may
accidentally
bump
you
and
then
you
take
offense
to
it
or
something,
but
it's
not
something
where
somebody's
trying
to
be
malicious
towards
you.
It's
just
somebody
who
may
have
taken
it
wrong.
B
Other
things
are
you're
not
trying
to
seek
power
or
attention
you're,
just
a
kid
who
may
be
having
a
bad
day,
and
so
it's
just
conflict.
It's
kids
who
maybe
are
in
a
bad
home
situation
and
don't
know
how
to
deal
with
conflicts
so
they
bring
it
to
school.
They
try
it
out
on
some
of
their
peers,
but
it's
not
really
bullying.
It's
just
normal
conflict
that
we
need
to
help
our
kids
learn
how
to
deal
with
and.
A
B
I
think
that
a
lot
of
students
bully
because
of
things
that
are
happening
to
them
in
their
own
life
that
they
feel
like
they
don't
have
any
power
or
control
over,
and
so
they
come
to
school
and
they
feel
like
I'm
away
from
my
parents,
I'm
away
from
other
adults
in
my
wife
and
so
I'm,
going
to
try
to
to
get
some
power
in
my
own
life.
So
a
lot
of
times,
I
think
they
feel
powerless
and
and
by
being
a
bully
or
by
committing
acts
of
bullying.
A
A
B
A
Well,
Tracie,
just
from
the
first
segment.
We
know
that
the
district
has
procedures
in
place
to
address
the
issue
of
bullying,
but
a
new
system
is
going
to
help
meet
the
needs
of
students
even
more
and
effectively
combat
this
growing
issue
after
the
break.
A
look
at
the
new
reporting
system,
but
first
here's
a
look
at
the
groundbreaking
ceremony
at
capitol
hill
elementary
school.
Thanks
to
the
maps
for
kids
renovations,
the
hundreds
of
little
Chiefs
will
have
additional
space
and
facility
upgrades
we'll
be
right
back.
A
A
A
You
can
find
the
meeting
agendas
by
visiting
the
board
of
education
section
on
okc
ps4
today,
we're
speaking
with
Tracy
Alvarez
from
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools
as
part
of
the
district
strategic
plan,
a
new
bullying
hotline
and
reporting
system
is
in
place
and
Tracy
587
stop
is
the
number
that
parents
need
to
remember.
Tell
us
about
this
new
initiative.
Well,.
B
I
am
really
excited
to
share
with
you
that
we
have
this
new
initiative.
587
stop
587
stop
is
a
safe
schools,
hotline
that
parents
and
children
can
both
call
it
can
be
answered
in
English
or
Spanish
both
so
that
we
will
be
able
to
service
both
of
those
populations
and
basically,
whenever
you
call
that
number
somebody
at
the
other
end
is
going
to
ask
a
series
of
questions
like,
for
instance,
what
school
does
your
child
attend
or
what
school
do
you
attend?
What
grade
level?
B
What's
a
description
as
some
of
the
things
going
on,
maybe
asking
the
who?
What,
when,
why
we're
of
the
particular
situation
once
that
call
has
been
received,
or
they
can
log
online
and
do
the
same
thing,
but
once
that
information
is
received,
it's
routed
directly
to
the
principal
of
that
school,
the
director
over
that
particular
school
and
if
you're
in
a
middle
school
or
a
high
school,
it's
also
routed
to
the
school
resource
officer
as
well
as
the
school
counselor.
B
A
B
A
Is
good,
I
hope
that
parents
take
heed
to
this
new
initiative
and
they're
able
to
take
advantage
of
it.
I
know
that
we
have
a
huge
hispanic
population,
which
is
why
it's
so
important
to
have
this
Spanish
speaking
person.
That's
going
to
be
able
to
take
these
really
drive
home.
Why
that's
so
important?
Well,.
B
I
think
that
a
lot
of
times
there's
a
lack
of
communication,
there's
a
big
barrier,
because
most
of
our
administrators
are
English
speaking
and
we
have
such
a
large
spanish-speaking
population
of
students
and
their
parents.
And
so
when
there's
a
bullying
situation,
they
don't
know
how
to
articulate
that
clearly
to
the
administration
so
that
they
can
help
look
for
a
solution
and
investigate
whatever
the
problem
is.
That's
great.
That's
a
huge.
A
B
Right,
that's
one
of
the
most
exciting
parts
of
the
whole
thing
is
that
once
you
do
either
login
and
complete
the
report
online
or
whether
you
make
the
phone
call
to
report
the
the
bullying
incident
or
any
other
safety
incident,
I
want
to
bring
that
up
as
well.
Once
that
call
has
been
made,
then
it's
forever
captured
in
the
computer.
B
It
is
that
action
that
the
administrator
took
is
captured
on
that
database,
so
that
whenever
we
have
parents
who
call
and
say
I've
been
telling
my
child's
been
telling
their
teacher
and
nothing
has
been
done
about
it,
then
we
can
say
we
really
want
you
to
either
log
on
to
the
website
or
call
this
number,
because
from
that
point
on
will
always
be
able
to
know.
Yes
for
sure
somebody
was
told
about
it,
and
these
are
the
steps
that
have
been
taken
to
try
to
correct
the
situation.
Okay,.
A
B
The
main
reason
I
think
it's
going
to
be
effective
is
because
we
do
lose
so
much
in
the
process
and
the
favorite
example
I
have
is
like
a
child
who
goes
on
recess
and
somebody
is
bothering
them
every
day
on
recess.
They
tell
the
teacher
on
recess
so,
and
so
is
bothering
me,
you
know
they're
bullying
me
and
the
teacher
says.
Well,
you
go
tell
your
regular
teacher
when
you
get
back
in
from
recess
and
then
they
go
back
in
from
recess
and
then
the
regular
teacher
says
well,
I
wasn't
on
the
playground.
B
Whenever
it
happened,
just
sit
down,
so
we
can
get
back
to
work.
So
then
the
kid
goes
home
and
tells
the
parent
you
know
so-and-so
is
bothering
me
at
recess,
I
think
they're,
bullying
me
and
then
the
parent
start
tries
to
contact
the
teacher
and
then
the
teacher
says
I,
don't
know
anything
about
it
and
it's
just
a
vicious
cycle.
So
now,
whenever
we
get
those
phone
calls.
B
I
didn't
know
that
this
was
going
on
in
our
school,
so
I
think
it
will
be
a
huge
eye-opener
in
terms
of
how
many
things
are
really
going
on
in
our
school
and
it'll
be
a
great
opportunity
to
educate
the
parents
on
normal
conflict
versus
bullying,
and
both
of
them
deserve
a
solution.
But
we
really
need
to
identify
what
the
problem
is.
So
we
can
figure
out
how
to
fix
it.
Well,.
A
Thank
you
so
much
for
being
on
the
show,
say,
Tracy
great
job
again
at
the

you're,
looking
at
a
short
snippet
of
the
rise

video
produced
by
the

The
video
is
a
call
to
action
for
community

parents
and
civic
leaders
to
rise
up
and
meet
the
needs
of
the
43,000
students
in
the
Oklahoma

district.
You
can
see
the
video
in
its
entirety
by
visiting
the
foundation
for
ok,
CPS
website
at
okc,
kids,
calm.
There
is
an
exciting
new
partnership
between
the
Oklahoma
City
public
school
district
and
the
k20
Center
in
Norman,
as
well
as
the
University
of
Oklahoma.
A
It
will
introduce
more
students,
two
options
for
post-secondary
education
joining
us
now
to
talk
about
this.
Partnership
is
Laura
Buxton,
Europe
project
coordinator
for
Oklahoma,
City,
Public
Schools,
and
thank
you
for
being
on
the
showcase
today.
Thank
you
for
having
me
well
I
gear
up
is
not
a
word
that
people
have
never
heard
before,
but.
D
This
one's
a
little
different,
this
partnership
so
tell
us
about
it.
It
is
a
little
different
now
many
people
know
that
gear
up
is
a
federal
grant
program
and
the
goal
of
the
grant
program
is
to
make
sure
that
students
are
prepared
for
college
and
we
start
really
early
in
the
middle
school
years
to
try
and
get
kids
ready
for
that
now.
D
Oklahoma
City
had
a
previous
gear
up
grant
from
nineteen
ninety
nine
to
two
thousand
six,
but
those
efforts
were
really
focused
on
a
lot
of
student
services,
which
is
great,
and
that
is
still
a
component
of
our
program.
But
lessons
learned
from
previous
previous
experience
and
from
research
is
that
there
are
so
many
stakeholders
that
are
involved
in
a
child's
decision
to
attend
college
and
a
child's
readiness
for
college,
and
so
we're
not
only
working
with
the
students
and
their
parents,
but
we're
also
working
with
the
principles
to.
D
They're
there
supporting
their
teachers
and
creating
a
college-going
culture,
we're
working
with
counselors
we're
also
working
with
the
community
to
bring
in
mentors
from
from
business
and
other
community
organizations.
And
so
not
only
are
we
working
with
the
students
but
we're
working
with
all
of
those
other
people
that
can
influence
a
child's
decision
to
attend
college
and
their
readiness
academically.
If.
D
To
know
if
you're
a
parent
sitting
at
home,
you
need
to
really
start
thinking
about
your
child
and
the
goals
that
they
have
for
their
future
and
that
you
have
for
their
future.
Now
most
most
parents
think
oh,
my
child's.
Only
a
seventh
grader
we're.
Not
we
don't
need
to
worry
about
that
yet,
but
the
time
flies
and
really
decisions
made
about
college
have
to
be
made
early
so
that.
A
D
A
D
The
great
part
about
gear
up
is,
we
do
a
lot
of
really
fun
activities,
but
all
of
that
fun
has
a
purpose,
and
that
is
to
make
sure
that
parents
are
aware
of
what
college
looks
like
what
what
options
you
have,
and
so
we
have
activities
that
are
specifically
for
students
where
the
students
come
on
campus
for
a
field
trip
and
and
learn
about
the
college.
We
also
have
overnight
activities
for
parents
and
their
students
to
come,
spend
the
night
together
in
a
college
dorm,
which
is
always
an
interesting
experience
for
young
ones.
You've,
never.
D
From
home
really
and
they
they
participate
in
fun
activities,
but
they
also
learn
a
lot
about
the
resources
available
at
colleges
and
that
helps
support
students.
We
have
activities
throughout
the
school
year
that
will
be
held
at
the
school
parent
events
and
just
a
lot
of
different
opportunities
to
become
involved.
Well.
A
D
And
yes,
this
grant
is
very
specific
to
a
cohort
of
students,
meaning
that
the
students
that
graduate
from
these
ten
specific
schools
are
or
who
are,
in
these
ten
specific
schools
right
now
for
the
classes,
graduating
classes
of
2017
and
2018.
Those
are
the
students
that
are
served
and
our
ten
gear
up.
Schools
are
Douglas,
Jackson,
jefferson,
john
marshall,
northeast
oklahoma,
centennial,
Rogers,
Roosevelt,
Taft
and
Webster.
Now
you
may
be
wondering
well
my
my
child
is
in
Taft
right
now,
but
of
course
they
won't
stay
in
staff,
they'll
they'll
move
on
to
a
high
school.
A
D
D
Was
that,
like
that
was
that
was
a
lot
of
fun
and
what
we
learned
from
that
experience
we
had
and
the
kids
and
an
apparent
come
up.
They
were
that
they
were
either
going
into
7th
grade
or
going
into
8th
grade,
and
so
pretty
young
and
and
and
the
parents
were
there
with
him.
But
what
we
did
was
we
split
them
for
some
different
activities.
We
had
the
parents
go
to
the
student
services
in
the
financial
aid
office
and
just
some
of
those
different
places
to
learn
about.
D
Okay,
when
I
send
my
child
off
to
college
they're,
not
alone,
they
have
support,
and
then
with
the
students
we
took
them
around
to
look
at
different
types
of
classrooms.
A
lot
of
them
have
learned
that
okay
college
isn't
just
one
building
that
I
go
to
school
and
there's
a
bell,
and
you
know,
I
stay
in
the
same
building
all
day
long.
They
learned
about
different
options
for
careers
and
in
different
majors
and
what
those
classrooms
look
like.
D
A
D
Any
child
that
is
in
the
seventh
and
eighth
grade
at
those
ten
schools
is
eligible
to
participate
in
gear
up
activities
and
programming,
and
there
will
be
some
events
that
are
open
to
everybody.
However,
the
college
forums,
and
personally,
we
are
just
limited
because
of
space.
We
we
are
using
dorms
at
different
colleges,
and
so
it's
it's
really
important
to
apply
early
for
those
things
when
they're
announced,
if
there's
a
waiting
list
typically,
we
will
have
folks
that
that
cancel
so
apply
anyway.
D
Just
the
the
name
of
the
game
is
just
making
sure
you
submit
things
in
a
timely
manner.
Now,
each
of
our
school
sites
that
I
named
has
a
gear
up
site
coordinator,
that
is
at
the
school,
and
so
that
person
is
the
facilitator
to
link
students
and
their
families
to
all
of
these
activities,
and
so
that
on
site
person
is
your
vest
your
best
bet
for
for
trying
to
get
into
those
activities
that
may
be
full?
Okay,.
