From YouTube: From City Hall - Ward 3
Description
Ward 3 City Councilman Larry McAtee visits with Larry Bross and Steve Zabel past OU Football teammates and now with City Care. Topics include City Care's services and there work with the city's youth at Crystal Lake.
A
Hi
I'm
Larry
marketing
war,
three
City
Councilman,
it's
a
delight
today
to
have
two
gentlemen,
former
teammates
from
the
University
of
Oklahoma.
Here
today,
we're
not
got
to
talk
about
University
of
Oklahoma
football,
but
we
have
Larry
Bross
Larry
nice
to
have
you
with
us
today,
sir,
it's
good
to
be
here,
Larry
and
Steve's
able
it's.
A
C
A
A
C
21
years
ago,
Steve
and
I
started
going
to
church,
10th
and
Robinson
a
church
that
had
been
empty
for
30
years
and
the
pastor
of
the
church
said.
Let's
start,
a
whosoever
will
may
come
breakfast
five
days
a
week,
basically
open
to
the
homeless
people
of
downtown
Oklahoma
City.
So
we
started
this
breakfast
and
I
invited
Steve
to
come
down
and
help
help
us
serve
one
time
and
he
showed
up
and
right
away.
We
were
serving
two
thousand
breakfast
every
month
and
we
had
to
raise
some
money
for
that.
B
Actually
I
had
known
about
the
breakfast
and
felt
a
little
guilty
about
not
getting
involved.
You
know
everybody
still
procrastinating,
the
thought
of
getting
up
in
the
dark
and
the
cold
was
a
little
ominous,
but
I
did
tell
Larry
that
my
new
year's
resolution
for
1993
was
to
help
him
with
breakfast
on
New,
Year's
Day
and
about
four
o'clock
in
the
afternoon.
New
Year's
Eve
day
calls
me
up
and
goes
guess
what
tomorrow
is
New
Year's,
Day
and
I'll
see
you
at
five
a.m.
B
and
I
showed
up,
and
we
cracked
72
dozen
eggs
and
fed
lots
of
people,
and
it
just
really
touched.
My
heart
and
I
went
every
day
for
the
next
10
days,
monday,
tuesday,
wednesday
thursday
friday
and
finally,
I
was
so
tired.
After
two
weeks,
my
wife
said
that
charity
begins
in
at
home
and
I
need
to
cut
back
so
I
cut
it
back
to
three
days
a
week
and
then
two
days
a
week
and
finding
over
the
last,
probably
ten
years
or
so
it's
been
every
Thursday.
B
A
C
About
that
time
that
we're
doing
this
breakfast
Colonel
Colin
Powell,
is
in
town
with
America's
Promise
and
we
looked
into
America's
Promise
and
then
the
statistic
that
that
we
didn't
realize
was
that
seventy-four
percent
of
the
elementary
kids
and
title
one
schools
in
Oklahoma
City,
which
is
all
but
two
schools.
Seventy-Four
percent
of
these
kids
are
reading
below
proficiency
and
the
alarming
thing
the
shocking
thing
to
us
was
that
they're
building
prisons
many
states
ten
years
in
the
future,
based
on
4th
grade
reading
failure
rate.
C
So
if
a
kid
can't
read
more
their
chances
for
success
or
I
really
diminished,
so
we
were
to
Denver
Colorado.
We
found
the
Wiz
Kids
program
which
had
been
up
there
for
seven
years.
It
involves
the
faith
community
to
come
down
to
work
with
inner-city
schools
and
inner
city
churches,
one-on-one
tutoring
for
kids
throughout
the
school
year,
and
so.
C
A
C
Actually
Steve
Steve
pointed
this
out
to
me,
but
what
I
didn't?
What
I
do
know
is
that
there's
a
book
called
last
child
in
the
woods
which
shows
that
there's
a
great
disconnect
in
this
day
and
age
between
not
just
inner-city
kids
but
kids
in
general,
with
nature,
and
it's
my
when
I
was
a
kid
I
could
rock
it
build
treehouses
anywhere
I
wanted
to
I,
had
forts
out
and
fields
and
because
I
out
need
a
walk
out
and
look
at
wildlife
and
chase
rabbits
and
everything
these
inner
city.
Kids.
C
B
Through
no
fault
of
their
own,
it's
just
a
fact
of
life
when
the
school's
out,
it's
really
a
depressing
time
for
inner-city
kids,
because
they
know
they're
going
to
have
to
go
home
and
stay
all
day
inside
the
building
for
fear
of
going
out
and
getting
hurt
or
getting
in
trouble
or
whatever
and
I
actually
saw.
A
study
called
the
two
step
study
that
compares
an
inner-city
child
with
a
suburban
child
starting
to
school.
The
inner-city
child
is
already
the
equivalent
of
four
steps
behind
they
go
to
school
for
a
year.
B
They
both
gained
a
step,
but
in
the
summertime
the
inner-city
child
loses
the
equivalent
of
a
half
step.
The
suburban
child
gains
a
half
a
step,
so
you
can
see
progressively
how
much
further
that
suburban
inner-city
child
falls
behind
his
contemporary
from
suburbia.
So
we
had
an
opportunity
to
put
on
a
summer
camp
at
a
facility
called
Crystal
Lake,
which
city
care
took
over
the
management
of
several
years
ago.
During
those
the
past
several
years,
we've
completely
secured
the
property
we
fenced
it
off.
B
B
We
had
dump
truck
loads
of
shingles,
and
you
know
hot
hot
tubs
and
boats,
and
you
name
it
we
had
it
then.
So
crystal
lake
now
looks
like
a
diamond
in
the
rough
sarkeys.
Foundation
gave
us
money.
Richardson
homes
built
a
pavilion
with
that
money
built
a
new
bathroom.
We've
got
a
new
entryway,
and
somebody
in
this
room
helped
us
get
a
road
built
out
there.
That
is
now
one
of
the
finer
roads
in
oklahoma
county
thanks.
A
For
doing
that,
yeah,
thank
you.
Well,
while
we're
on
that,
if
somebody
watching
this
program
today
would
like
to
take
up
and
help
a
company
like
Richardson
homes
or
sarkeys,
and
invest
some
money
or
in-kind
contribution
to
what's
going
on
about
things,
your
city
care
or
a
crystal
lake,
how
could
they
get
in
touch
with
you
guys
they.
B
Could
actually
call
the
Persian
Center,
which
is
yet
another
project
that
we
work
on?
It's
our
transitional
housing
development
that
Larry
so
keenly
involved
with
at
405,
609
2400
say
that
you'd
like
to
talk
to
Steve
Zabel
I'm,
the
director
of
development
and
I'll,
get
back
to
you
and
we'll
arrange
for
you
to
give
whatever
you
want
as
much
as
you
want.
B
A
B
B
The
fishing
is
very
excellent
out
there
there's
a
handicap
fishing
dock
for
people
to
fish
out
there,
but
if
someone
would
like
to
have
a
family
reunion
or
a
corporate
picnic
or
do
something
to
try
to
lease
the
pavilion
and
part
of
the
lake,
they
can
get
a
hold
of
us
again
at
six.
Oh
nine,
twenty
four
hundred
and
ask
for
Greg
web
Greg,
former
langston
basketball
coach,
the
husband
of
BJ
Webb,
who
is
our
executive
director
of
our
Wiz
Kids
program.
B
A
A
C
First
of
all,
let
me
make
it
clear
that
we
want
this
late
to
be
out
outdoor
educational
and
we
want
to
keep
it
as
much
close
to
nature.
No,
no
basketball
courts,
no
soccer
fields,
just
wildlife,
identification,
a
first-class
archery
range
for
kids.
You
know
archers
in
400,
schools
in
Oklahoma
I
had
no
idea.
That
was
that
big.
We
have
a
first-class
archery
facility
for
the
kids
to
enjoy
out
the
leg,
but
we
want
to
keep
it
outdoor
educational.
You
know
this
is
the
plant
life
identification.
C
B
And
do
it
in
such
a
way
that
it
it
helps
them
in
their
leadership,
abilities
in
their
own
competency
about
themselves
to
gain
self
recognition
by
being
involved
with
teams
each
the
summer
camp
will
have
ten
or
groups
of
ten
kids
and
they'll
all
be
rotating
through
different
activities.
Maybe
it's
archery!
Maybe
it's
fishing.
We've
got
a
lot
of
X
Oklahoma
wildlife
people,
Joe
McCreery
is
helping
us
very
significantly
with
the
fishing
and
it's
not
just
here's
a
pole
go
fish.
It's
here's
the
hook.
This
is
a
small
hook.
This
is
big
look.
B
This
is
how
you
tie
a
knot.
This
is
a
bobber.
This
is
why
you
use
a
bobber
fish
identification.
All
the
kids
will
get
handouts
with
fish,
coloring
books,
fish
identification
cards
and
calendars
will
actually
have
people
from
the
wildlife
department
come
out
and
do
skins
and
skulls.
The
kids
will
learn
wildlife
outdoor
survival
skills,
so
it
is
like
Larry
says:
emphasis
is
on
outdoor
education.
You
know
to
be
able
to
walk
out
there
and
no
don't
touch
this
plan
because
that's
poison,
ivy
or
that's
poison
oak.
B
That
might
help
or
don't
walk
in
that
Johnson
grass,
because
you
might
get
chiggers
and
you
can't
see
him
but
they'll
bite,
you
you'll
know
they're
there.
Those
are
invaluable
things
and
I
know
in
my
life
and
in
Larry's
life,
if
it
hadn't
been
for
the
outdoors,
if
it
hadn't
been
for
hunting
and
fishing
I
wouldn't
have
enjoyed
like
near
as
much
as
I
have,
besides
playing
football
and
sports
and
athletics.
My
wife,
my
family,
my
religion,
my
faith
in
Jesus
and
and
our
involvement
together.
A
A
C
Is
transitional
housing
it
was
built,
we
lost
the
ymca
in
the
murrah
bombing
and
a
city
stepped
up
to
help
us
with
home
phones.
We
built
the
Pershing
center
with
60
rooms.
It's
been
in
existence
10
years
now
and
have
you
know
free
meals,
there
we're
92%
employed,
it's
not
a
shelter,
but
you
do
have
to
be
homeless
too,
to
be
able
to
get
in
through
an
interview
program
and
then
get
back
on
your
feet.
If
you've
done
well
held
and
held
a
job.
C
A
Larry
Steve
appreciates
you
guys
appreciate
your
commitment
to
your
Lord
and
Capri.
She
ate
the
way
that
they're
as
he
would
see
those
who
have
a
need
to
step
up
and
meet
that
need.
You
guys
are
one
of
the
best-kept
secrets
in
oklahoma
city.
Just
like
crystal
lake
is
one
of
the
best-kept
secrets.
I
hope
today,
we've
been
able
to
inform
some
people
about
the
opportunities
that
here
not
only
to
help
people
but
to
go
out
and
enjoy
the
outdoors
and
the
crystal
lake
that
you
guys
help
with
Brian
Munns
help
to
reclaim.
