From YouTube: From City Hall - Ward 1
Description
Councilman James Griener discusses the role of Friends of NW 10th Street in Ward 1 with the group's president Joey Allen.
A
Oklahoma
City,
my
name
is
James
Greiner.
I
am
the
ward
1
Councilman
and
I'm
here
today
with
joey
allen,
who
is
the
president
of
friends
of
tenth
Street
and
so
I
thought
we'd
just
start
off
by
you
kind
of
explaining
what
what
friends
do
and
things
about
your
organization
and
for
anybody
who
isn't
familiar
with
it
sure.
B
Thank
you
very
much
councilman.
We
appreciate
you
having
us
on
this
morning
and
appreciate
the
opportunity
for
you
and
and
your
audience
to
learn
more
about
the
Friends
of
Northwest,
tenth
Street.
In
its
current
configuration,
the
Friends
of
Northwest
teen
Street
have
been
in
existence
for
the
last
organizations
been
around
for
the
last
eight
or
nine
years.
B
If
you
will
OSU
okc
out
to
county
line
road
and
then
from
Reno
up
to
Northwest,
sixteenth
street,
so
that
whole
corridor
through
there
is
what
we
consider
our
area
or
the
area
that
we
serve,
and
it's
always
been
done
through
three
basic
premises
and
that's
through
safety
and
security,
beautification
and
then
I.
Those
are
all
done
via
task
force
and
our
last
task
force
kind
of
is
the
catch-all
and
that's
family
education,
support
and
in
employment,
success
and
but
the
mission
is
never
changed.
B
A
Well-
and
you
know
your
organization's
extremely
important
to
me-
because
I
actually
live
within
that
within
that
boundary,
so
it's
a
it's
important.
It's
it's
very
important
organization
for
me.
Tell
me
a
little
bit
about
I
know
that
you
guys
are
get
involved
in
education
and
some
of
the
some
of
the
things
that
you
do
with
that
I
know
you
get
involved
with
some
adult
education
as
well.
So
just
in
anything
of
that
topic,
the.
B
The
last
task
force
that
I
mentioned
the
family,
education,
support
and
employment.
Success
task
force
has
really
done
an
incredible
job,
the
last
several
years
of
bringing
organizations
together
as
a
coalition
and
and
serving
the
residents
of
our
area.
It's
done
in
a
couple
of
different
ways.
You
mentioned
adult
education.
B
B
When
there's
a
problem,
you're
more
likely
to
keep
an
eye
on
your
neighbor's
house,
if,
if
they're
out
of
town
are
gone
for
the
evening,
or
something
like
that,
so
we're
trying
to
help
build
that
sense
of
community
through
these
programs.
Ultimately.
But
the
the
services
that
we're
providing
there
have
just
been
great.
We've
had
25
to
30
adults
attending
each
one
of
the
different
classes
at
each
of
the
schools,
in
particular.
B
What
friends
we
provide
the
funding
for
the
childcare
function
or
portion
of
what
needs
to
take
place
so
that
the
parents
have
the
option
of
coming.
They
can
both
attend
if
there
are
two
parents
in
the
home,
if
there's
one
parent
in
the
home,
then
they
have
the
option
of
free
childcare
so
that
they
can
come
in
and
receive
the
benefit
of
classes
on
a
for
children.
We
work
again
in
conjunction
with,
in
particular
with
the
Western
High
School
District
and
the
YMCA
to
provide
after
school
care
for
children.
B
The
YMCA,
of
course
provides
two
programs
and
and
the
supervision
for
those
the
school
has
a
function
that
they
provide
and
friends
has
kind
of
been
a
coordinator
for
those
services
in
the
past.
If
you
will,
and
that
serves
hundreds
of
kids
every
afternoon
in
the
Western
Heights
School
District.
So
education
is
something
that's
that's
incredibly
important
to
us.
B
We
have
we're
just
now
finishing
up
a
something:
that's
been
ongoing
now
for
five
or
six
years,
which
is
a
backpack
program
that
we
have
this
year,
we
provided
about
400
enough
school
supplies
and
backpacks
for
400
students
for
four
schools.
Just
that
I,
don't
I,
don't
make
a
mistake.
It
was
green
Vale
and
council
grove
in
the
Western
Heights
School,
District,
Apollo
and
Hilldale
in
the
putnam
city
school
districts,
and
we
had
the
opportunity
to
last
week
to
deliver
the
backpacks
all
the
school
supplies
and
meet
with
the
principles
and
some
of
the
staff.
B
It's
I
we're
doing
that.
We've
done
that
a
number
of
different
ways
over
the
years.
At
times,
in
the
past,
we
had
a
like
a
community
fair
and
we
had
the
backpacks
there
and
the
students
would
come
and
get
the
backpacks
directly
from
us,
and
surprisingly,
those
backpacks
didn't
always
make
it
to
school.
B
It's
something
that
are
that
that
that
particular
task
force
is
very.
It
was
very
passionate
about
it.
It's
a
great
way
to
really
help
some
of
the
students
in
the
area
and
then,
additionally,
that
same
task
force
still
does
put
on
a
community
fair.
We
do
that
now.
In
the
spring
it's
held
in
April
late
April
early
May
each
year,
it's
always
held
in
conjunction
with
the
the
DHS
office,
which
is
in
our
corridor
at
10th
and
rockwell
they've
been
huge
supporters
of
the
corridor
for
a
number
of
years.
B
We
really
appreciate
their
partnership
and
we
had
about
30
vendors
this
last
year,
and
it
was
everything
from
things
that
were
very
educational
educational
projects
or
you
know
fun
activities
for
the
kids
to
do
while
they
were
there
it
up
to
and
including
fingerprinting
and
iris
scans
and
immunizations,
and
those
kind
of
things
that
that
they
might
not
be
able
to
get
close
by
home.
They
were
able
to
come
and
do
their
and
plus
we
have
the
fire
department
and
we
have
the
different
animals
and
all
kinds
of
it
was
really
a
multi-generational
event.
B
This
year
we
had
dancers
from
several
different
cultures
up
in
to
and
including
some
senior
citizen
dancers,
who
were
just
great.
We
had
the
Lions
Club,
the
Westside
Lions
Club
has
been
a
huge
huge
supporter
of
forensic
northwest,
tenth
Street
since
its
inception,
and
they
brought
out
their
mobile
screening
van
and
did
senior
screenings
while
they
were
there.
So
anyway,
we
ended
up
with
about
30
vendors
and
about
a
thousand
people
that
came
through
that
morning.
B
B
B
A
B
Well,
some
people
would
say
that
that
friends
of
Northwest,
tenth
Street,
was
formed
in
Reverse
of
the
way
that
most
organizations
like
ours
come
about.
Usually
there
is
a
neighborhood
or
a
neighborhood
association
that
wants
to
incorporate
itself
into
the
business
community
in
the
area,
friends
of
Northwest,
tenth
Street
was
began
by
not
only
local
businesses,
social
service
agencies,
faith-based
organizations
that
were
in
the
area,
those
organizations-
and
we
look
to
include
the
neighborhood's
to
improve
the
neighborhoods
if
they're
interested
in
participating
with
us
in
the
area.
So
it's
been
a
little
bit
backwards.
B
We've
always
had
a
strong
base
of
business
support.
It's
been
critical
to
us
for
the
fundraising
aspects
and
those
kind
of
things
that
we've
had
throughout
the
years
and
the
leadership
that
is
that
has
come
forward
from
the
community.
Now
our
board
now
consists
of
not
only
the
businesses
in
the
area,
but
a
number
of
neighborhood
residents
as
well.
So
it's
there
is
a
good
mix
of
people
there.
The
the
economic
development
piece
along
north
wet
the
court.
The
northwestern
three
quarter
has
is
critical.
B
Basically,
for
those
that
are
familiar
with
the
area,
you
know
there
are
some
on
the
board
who
have
lived
and
been
around
the
area,
their
entire
lives
30
40
50
years
and
a
number
of
years
ago.
People
will
remember
if
you're,
a
longtime,
Oklahoma
City
residents.
You
may
remember
that
you
know
Northwest
tenth
street
east
of
Port
or
west
cuse
me
west
of
portland
towards
Meridiana
MacArthur
was
sort
of
a
restaurant
corridor.
There
were
a
number
of
great
restaurants.
B
B
What
we
have
in
the
area
now
are
a
number
of
you
know:
that's
light
industrial.
There
are
some
retail
businesses.
There
are
some
restaurants,
we're
fortunate.
That
Reno,
of
course,
has
a
strong
retail
presence
and
northwest
twenty-third
Street
has
a
strong
retail
presence,
so
those
kind
of
flow
over
into
tenth
Street
and
what
we've
been
trying
to
do
is
determine
the
best
way
to
improve
the
basically
the
the
business
community
in
the
area.
B
Last
year
we
we
were
fortunate
enough
to
enter
into
a
contract
with
the
city
of
oklahoma
city
to
provide
economic
redevelopment
to
that
area
and
that's
an
ongoing
process.
We've
hired
a
person
to
work
specifically
on
that
in
the
area
working
with
the
with
the
existing
businesses
working
to
bring
in
new
businesses
working
with
developers
and
with
real
estate
professionals
to
see
to
take
a
look
at
what
we
had,
what
we
needed
and
who
might
be
best
served
in
that
area.
For
that
I
know.
B
One
of
the
things
that
we're
most
interested
in
at
this
point
in
time
is
a
grocery
store.
There's
not
a
grocery
store
anywhere
on
tenth
street.
There
is
a
course
there's
a
walmart
at
Reno
or
that
Reno
and
MacArthur.
There
is
a
neighborhood
walmart
neighborhood
market
at
23rd
in
macarthur,
there's
an
aldi
store
there
there's
a
homeland.
There
are
some
ethnic,
specific
stores
in
the
area
by
closed
the
correct.
You
know
what
we're
really
looking
for
is
a
nice
anchor.
So
if
there's
anybody
out
there
who's,
you
know
who's
a
grocery
store
developer.
B
Who
is
looking
for
a
great
place?
That's
an
underserved
market.
We
have
one
available
and
we
have
space
available,
there's
land
available
in
the
area.
We
also
have
a
number
of
property
owners
who
are
interested
in
improving
their
improving
the
area
so
it
you
know
we
are
a
great
place,
we're
told
by
by
the
City
Planning
Department
and
the
Chamber
of
Commerce
and
their
economic
development
staff
that
we're
a
great
place
for
a
second
business.
B
You
know
a
local
ownership
looking
to
expand
that
that
already
has
a
you
know,
somewhat
well-known
name,
we'd
be
a
great
place
when
we
surveyed
our
businesses
in
the
corridor
earlier
this
year.
One
of
the
things
they
found
was
that
you
know
a
a
grocery
store
was
great.
The
other
thing
that
they
were
really
interested
in
were
cafe
coffee
shop
kind
of
establishments
so
that
when
their
customers
came
to
visit,
you
know
they
would
have
a
place
to
stop
for
lunch
or
if
they
were
waiting
on
a
repair
or
something
like
that
go
to
lunch.
B
So
those
kind
of
things
would
be
outstanding
for
us
as
well.
We
we
believe
that
we're
going
to
have
a
nice
pediatric
clinic
built
in
the
area
in
the
next
two
to
three
years.
We
have
some
interest
in
some
momentum
going
on
that.
So
there
are
a
number
of
things
that
are
beginning
to
happen
for
us.
You
know
we,
we
don't
have
any
illusions
about
about
our
area.
You
know
we're
not
we're
not
going
to
breathe
in
X
bricktown.
A
B
Do
that
is
yearly?
Do
that,
as
my
last
plug
I
have
that
we
have
one
fundraiser
for
the
Friends
of
Northwest
tenth
Street
annually.
It's
called
our
top
ten
auction
and
dinner
held
every
year
at
castle.
Falls
restaurant
&,
Event
Center,
which
is
at
a
twenty
north
macarthur
tickets,
are
fifty
dollars
a
piece.
It's
Thursday,
September's
of
twelve
at
six
thirty
in
the
evening,
a
telephone
number
for
reservations
or
four
tickets
is
40.
5942
6133,
942
6133.
Also
thank.
