Councilwoman Salyer welcomes guests to discuss the new John W. Rex Downtown Elementary School. The new OKCPS charter school will be built at the southwest corner of Sheridan and Walker Avenues.
A
And
David
Todd
who's
the
program
manager
for
maps
and
maps
for
kids,
specifically,
which
is
what
we're
going
to
be
talking
about
today
and
so
David.
Maybe
we
could
try
out
a
little
bit
of
history
to
begin
with,
15
or
16
years
ago,
or
citizens
passed
our
first
Maps
initiative
that
helped
build
our
six
or
seven
downtown
projects
that
we're
all
so
familiar
with
the
ballpark
in
our
beautiful
canal
and
the
Oklahoma
River,
and
we
went
back
to
the
citizens
for
a
second
time
and
ask
them
for
a
penny
sales
tax.
C
A
A
C
C
A
So
altogether
we
had
north
of
seven
hundred
million
dollars,
I
think
to
work
on
this
project
we're
seven
years
into
it.
We've
got
every
project
underway,
I
think
except
really
for
two,
and
what
we're
here
to
talk
about
today
with
John
is
the
downtown
elementary
school
and
I
think
we
already
have
it
named
Sal.
A
B
Really
is
it's.
B
We're
located
downtown,
we
were
involved
in
a
site
selection
process
and
in
the
process,
was
very
interesting
because
in
the
process,
I
think
we
had
up
to
18
sites
in
the
downtown
area
that
we
looked
at
and
we
vetted
those
went
through
a
you
know.
You
have
long
list
of
criteria
and
you
thought
we
and
finally,
we
recommended
a
site
at
Sheridan
in
Hudson,
just
on
the
very
west
edge
of
downtown,
and
it
is
it's
a
fabulous
site.
It's
gonna
be
a
great
site
for
a
school
great.
B
It
that's
any.
What
really
makes
the
downtown
school
unique
is
all
the
assets
that
we
have
in
the
community
on
the
ground
that
can
that
can
work
with
the
school.
You
know,
there's
a
library
there's
the
arts
there's
just
there's
a
business
community,
so
we
that
was
one
of
the
criteria.
We
kind
of
put
a
ring
around
downtown
and
identified
all
those
assets,
and
that
was
a
great
at
each
site
and
that
site
really
was
one
of
the
best
sites.
Perfect.
A
C
B
A
B
There's
we
have
community
meetings
and
you
know
we
will
come
up
with
an
initial
kind
of
conceptual
design
and
then
we'll
present
that
to
the
community
and
take
their
input
and
we
had
a
very
nice
community
meeting,
I,
don't
know
probably
d
or
60
participants,
a
large
group,
and
we
get
some
very
good
input
feedback
from
that
meeting.
And
so
then
we
take
that
into
the
next
phase.
A
B
C
C
C
A
Well,
it's
really
exciting,
you
know,
having
a
downtown
school
is
something
that
I
think
all
major
cities
have.
It
really
lends
to
the
heartbeat
of
what's
going
on
and
so
I
know
everybody's
looking
forward
to
it,
how
many
students
will
be
able
to
attend?
What
are
you
expecting
a
population
to
be
the.
B
The
program
calls
were
approximately
500
students
and
it
will
go
pre-k
to
sixth
grade
and
the
effect
we
just.
We
were
just
kind
of
talking
about
the
other
day,
we're
kind
of
selling
out
how
many
kids
in
each
classroom,
but
as
it
currently
stands.
There
will
be
an
equal
number
of
approximately
equal
number
of
children
in
each
class
from
pre-k
to
sixth
grade
so
it'll
be
about
60
to
62
children
per
grade
level
and.
B
B
What
I
understand
it
there's
there's
a
criteria
being
developed
for
for
that
currently,
and
I
don't
think
it's
fully
developed,
but
conceptually
there
will
there
will
be
a
boundary
leg.
All
schools,
hell
and
that'll
be
a
boundary.
You
know
around
the
downtown
area
and
that
will
be
for
a
good
share
of
the
children
and
then
there
will
also
then
be
transfers
initially
open
transfers
for
other
children
within
the
district
and
then
ultimately,
then,
if
it,
you
know,
expands
beyond
that,
it
would
just
be
an
open
transfer,
perfect.
A
B
A
Actually
paid
a
lot
of
attention
to
that
as
I've
been
traveling
to
see,
you
know
how
you
can
make
that
work
and
I
was
in
China
not
that
long
ago,
and
you
saw
a
whole
class
and
they
had
little
ropes
or
little
ribbons,
and
they
were
just
all
in
a
line
connected
with
bright
little
yellow
ribbons.
I
thought
this
may
be
an
idea.
We
have
take
home,
Oklahoma
City
figure
out
how
to
keep
them
all,
keep
everybody
in
line,
but
that's
exciting.
C
A
A
It's
an
amazing
story,
but
it's
also
not
the
end
of
our
story
and
we're
doing
a
lot
of
work
on
the
academic
side
as
well
as
the
building
side,
we've
created,
some
beautiful
masterpieces
I've
had
a
chance
to
to
work
many
of
the
schools
in
my
ward
and
outside,
and
it's
just
created
such
a
lovely
learning
environment
for
young
people,
but
we
still
have
some
work
to
do.
Yes,.
C
A
B
A
B
A
B
A
A
A
Thought
it
was
just
a
wonderful
experience.
You
know
we
spent
maybe
30
minutes
well,
we
did
spend
30
minutes
a
week
with
the
children
and
had
them
read
to
us,
and
you
know
I
know
I
feel
like
I
got
more
out
of
it.
Then
my
wonderful
little
student
did,
but
you
could
just
see
your
face
light
up
when
we
showed
up
in
the
morning.
A
I
think
it's
going
to
be
just
one
more
of
these
terrific
pieces
of
the
puzzle
that
are
making
our
downtown
Oklahoma
City
such
a
vibrant,
wonderful
place
to
spend
some
time.
So
thank
you
for
your
work
on
the
project
and
David,
thanks
for
all
you're
doing
to
keep
all
these
balls
up
in
the
air.
I
know
it's
a
straight
learning
curve
for
you
and
we're
happy
to
have
you
here
at
the
city
and
URI
excited
about
all
the
work
that
the
maps
office
is
doing
well.
