Oklahoma City to work with Google Fiber to explore bringing OKC residents ultra-high speed Internet access

Starting this week, Google will work closely with Mayor Mick Cornett and city leaders on a joint planning process to explore what it would take to build a brand new fiber-optic network capable of delivering these gigabit speeds throughout Oklahoma City. Google will begin compiling a detailed study of local factors that might affect construction plans. Simultaneously, Mayor Cornett and city leaders will begin meetings with Google to discuss what it would take to plan and prepare the city for a fiber project of this scale.

Google Fiber is an Internet and TV service that provides Internet connectivity up to 1 gigabit.

Well, this is indeed a big day for the citizens of Oklahoma City and the business leaders of Oklahoma City. Every mayor in America has been.

Has the anticipation that someday Google will come to their community bringing higher forms of technology that will allow businesses to grow higher speeds of internet service for their citizens, and everybody knows at some point they're going to get in line and hopefully make an agreement with Google, and we are here to announce today that Google is in town and we are exploring the next step in in high speed internet and on the technology side.

I'm going to let google explain, but I think this is further validation of outside investment in oklahoma city, that people believe in oklahoma city's future that people acknowledge the the 20-year transformation that has taken place in our city and believe that the next 20 years are going to be just as exciting and are willing to be a part of it. So with that, let me introduce the director of expansion for Google Fiber Jill Schumacher chill.

You mr. mayor ah and thank you as well to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art for hosting us today, it's great to be here as mayor just shared, we are exploring the possibility of bringing Google Fiber an ultra high speed, internet and TV service to Oklahoma City. As the director of expansion for Google Fiber, my team and I have considered many cities for our service, but as of today, Oklahoma City is one of only a handful of cities that were working with across the u.s.

and that's because Oklahoma City stood out for a number of reasons. First, oklahoma, city's stats are impressive. You're ranked is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. You're ranked is the number one city in which to launch a business and your ranked as one of the top metro areas for science and technology professional. So it's no wonder that the startup community in oklahoma city is growing faster than ever. Co-Working spaces like the 404 and nonprofits, like I tui, are investing in the entrepreneurial community here and we'd like to do the same.

That's why we'd like to bring internet connectivity? That's up to 83 times faster than the average American broadband speed here to Oklahoma City, just as the last significantly in internet speeds, from dial-up to broadband brought a wave of innovation. We also believe that the next wave of speed upgrades from broadband to a gigabit per second will bring about their future of the internet, and we believe those innovations can be born right here in Oklahoma City, thanks in part to your innovative spirit that the mayor spoke about.

Another reason Oklahoma City stood out is because we look for cities that have strong leaders like mayor cornet and city manager, Jim couch and his team city.

Leadership is critical because, in order to deliver Google Fiber service to local residents and small businesses, we would need to build thousands of miles of fiber of a brand new fiber network throughout the city, and that kind of large-scale infrastructure project requires us to work very closely with City Hall and things like permitting construction scheduling and infrastructure placement things that the city is very used to doing, and the pen, given the past 20 years of incredible growth here so over the next few months.

Will work with mayor cornet and his team to plan what a local fiber network would look like this planning process will be important because it will help us determine whether or not we could bring fibre here without being too disruptive to the community.

As soon as we have a plan in place, we hope to be able to announce that fiber is definitely coming to Oklahoma City, but until then we have a lot of work to do with the mayor, city manager and their teams, and we are very excited to get started.
