A
Welcome
to
the
Civic
Center
Music
Hall,
my
name
is
Richard
charnae
I
am
the
event
manager
here
at
the
Civic
Center.
This
building
began
its
life
in
the
early
30s
as
a
WPA
project.
Does
anybody
know
what
the
WPA
is?
Well,
that
is
the
works
project
administration
and
it
was
a
program
that
was
initiated
by
the
President
and
he
went
around
the
country
and
he
built
in
disability
or
eum's
and
police
stations.
A
As
a
matter
of
fact,
the
four
buildings
that
are
in
a
row
here,
the
police
station,
this
building,
which
at
the
time
was
called
the
Municipal
Auditorium,
the
Municipal
Building
across
the
park
and
the
federal
courthouse-
was
all
part
of
the
WPA
project
and
it
was
known
as
the
Civic
Center
project.
Now,
at
the
time
this
building
opened
in
1937,
it
held
6400
people,
and
we
did
everything
here
from
basketball
to
Symphony
shows
from
Broadway
to
ice
shows
we
did
car
shows
we
did
all
kinds
of
shows
here.
A
As
a
matter
of
fact,
this
building
holds
a
variety
box
office
record
for
eight
sold-out
performances
of
Hello
Dolly
in
1961,
and
this
is
a
record
that
will
never
be
broken
because
there
are
no
longer
any
facilities
of
this
size
in
existence.
I
mean
even
Radio,
City,
there's
only
fifty
eight
hundred
seats,
so
that
record
is
gonna
stand.
So
what
you're
standing
in
right
now
is
the
original
1937
Lobby.
This
is
the
original
terrazzo
floor.
A
This
is
the
some
of
the
original
stained
that
go
off
notice,
all
the
the
deco,
that's
all
over
the
place,
some
of
the
original
Spanish
mahogany
on
the
doors
and
the
frames
there.
As
a
matter
of
fact,
I
think
we
still
have
some
of
the
original
glass
in
those
windows.
You
can
see
how
they're
all
kind
of
distorted
and
everything
that's
some
of
the
original
glass.
Otherwise,
all
this
this
light
fixtures.
A
These
are
all
from
1937,
so
that
was
1937
and
then
in
1967
in
what
was
called
the
deal
of
the
century
for
a
million
dollars.
They
built
a
theater
inside
this
theater
and
they
renamed
it.
The
Civic
Center
Music
Hall.
Now,
at
that
time
the
State
Fairgrounds
had
just
finished
building
their
arena.
It
held
9,000
people,
they
didn't
need
six
thousand
seat
hall.
A
So
when
they
built
the
theater
inside
the
Miss
Praetorian,
they
cut
it
down
to
3,200
seats
and
we
still
did
all
kinds
of
Broadway
rock
shows
Philharmonic's
graduations
all
kinds
of
shows
were
held
here.
We
were
very
community
building,
then
we
went
down
in
1997
for
the
Maps
renovation
and
we
came
back
up
in
2001
now
this
was
a
53
million
dollar
renovation
and
we
reduced
the
seating
even
more
from
3,200
seats
to
what
is
now
24
77.
So
come
with
me
into
the
lobby.
