A
In
the
past
few
years,
the
city
of
San
Bruno
has
gotten
into
deep
doo-doo,
with
the
Regional
Water
Board
literally
we've
had
sewer
overflows
that
violated
the
Clean
Water
Act,
the
Clean
Water
Act
is
a
federal
law
put
into
place
to
regulate
discharges,
including
urban
runoff
and
stormwater.
The
Clean
Water
Act
was
intended
to
restore
and
maintain
technical,
physical
and
biological
integrity
of
the
nation's
waters.
A
If
you
live
in
san
bruno
chances
are
your
home
is
over
50
years
old
homes
are
built
to
last,
but
they
must
be
maintained
same
with
your
sewer
system.
That's
right,
only
part
of
the
sewer
system
is
maintained
by
the
city.
Part
of
the
sewer
line
is
your
responsibility.
Let's
take
a
look
under
the
street
ooh
ahh,
that's
better.
When
your
waste
water
goes
down
the
drain,
no
matter
from
the
toilet
or
from
a
sink.
A
It
goes
to
your
sewer,
lateral,
the
sewer
lateral
is
one
pipe
that
extends
from
the
house
or
building
and
connects
to
the
city
sewer
main
the
upper
lateral
runs
from
the
building
to
the
property
line.
The
lower
lateral
runs
from
the
property
line
to
the
city,
sewer
main
it
is
up
to
the
property
owner
to
maintain
the
sewer
lateral
to
prevent
leakage.
Many
sewer
laterals
are
as
old
as
the
sewer
main
that's
old.
The
city
of
San
Bruno
will
celebrate
its
100-year
anniversary
in
2014.
Some
of
our
homes
have
been
around
that
long.
A
It
is
strongly
recommended
that
every
property
owner
hire
a
plumber
to
inspect
your
lateral
repair
any
problems
and
install
a
clean-out
connection.
A
clean-out
is
a
wide
joint
connected
to
the
lateral,
allowing
easy
access
to
clean
out
the
lateral.
If
the
clean-out
is
installed
at
the
property
line,
the
city
will
take
responsibility
and
maintain
the
lower
lateral
to
understand
the
importance
of
a
properly
working
sewer
line.
A
You
need
to
understand
the
difference
between
the
sanitary
sewer
line
and
the
gutter
and
storm
drain
system,
water,
waste,
water
and
sewage
that
flow
from
your
property
to
the
sewer
main
continue
on
to
the
wastewater
treatment
facility
shared
by
the
city
of
San
Bruno
and
the
city
of
South
San
Francisco.
Once
the
water
has
been
treated,
it
is
allowed
to
flow
into
creeks
and
into
the
bay
rainwater
and
other
water
that
flows
into
Street
gutters
goes
directly
to
creeks
and
to
the
bay.
A
If
there
is
a
sewer
overflow,
the
wastewater
travels
to
the
bay
via
the
storm
drains,
not
clean,
not
a
good
thing.
This
is
where
you
come
into
the
picture.
If
you
own
property
in
the
sharp
park
basin,
you
may
be
able
to
utilize
funds
from
the
private
sewer,
lateral
grant
program
to
replace
defective
sewer
laterals.
This
grant
program
is
partially
funded
as
part
of
the
settlement
of
an
enforcement
action
by
the
regional
water
quality
control
board
against
the
city
of
San
Bruno.
A
In
taking
advantage
of
this
grant
opportunity,
now
you
may
avoid
future
costly
sewer
backups
later.
This
is
how
it
works.
Contact
the
city
to
find
out
if
the
grant
applies
to
your
property
next
contact,
a
plumber
to
video
inspect
your
lateral.
The
program
provides
fifty
percent
matching
grant
funds
up
to
one
hundred
and
fifty
dollars
for
a
video
inspection.
If
your
sewer,
lateral
is
found
to
be
defective,
the
city
will
provide
fifty
percent
matching
grant
funds
up
to
seventeen
hundred
dollars
to
repair
or
replace
your
upper
sewer
lateral.

hover
over
the
department's
drop-down
menu,
then
hover
over
public
services,
click
on
the
wastewater
link,
sewer,
backups
and
overflows
our
ugly
business.
It
is
no
fun
when
it
flows
to
the
bay
and
it
is
no
fun
when
it
happens
in
your
home.
Take
advantage
of
the
private
sewer,
lateral
grant
program
in
San
Bruno.
So
you
can
have
the
peace
of
mind
that
your
sewer
will
function
effectively
and
efficiently
for
many
years
to
come.
