Description
Senior Moments #12 Social Security Online September 2009
B
A
C
The
Social
Security
program
was
implemented
in
1935
during
the
great
depression.
During
that
time,
a
lot
of
people
in
the
aging
population
were
homeless
and
the
government
stepped
in
to
put
in
a
safety
net
for
the
aging
population
during
during
this
area,
so
President
Roosevelt
signed
Social
Security
into
law,
August
14
1935,
so
we
just
had
our
74th
birthday
last
week,
so
today,
74
years
later,
we're
still
providing
financial
stability
for
America.
C
It's
a
guaranteed
benefit
where
workers
pay
the
social
security
benefit
and
or
do
eligible
for
retirement
benefits
when
they
retire
or
even
benefits
for
for
young
families
as
well.
In
case
someone
becomes
disabled,
there's
disability
benefits
in
the
case
of
death
of
a
family
member.
There
survivor
benefits,
so
it
provides
a
safety
net
for
America
and
the.
A
C
You
know
a
lot
of
Americans
older
Americans
today
rely
solely
on
social
security
as
their
sole
source
of
income,
and
it
was
never
intended,
as
such,
people
should
have
other
types
of
income,
hopefully
a
pension
savings.
We
encourage
savings,
and
so
a
lot
of
Americans
don't
have
those
other
types
of
income
and
without
Social
Security
they
would
have
nothing.
So
really.
Our
goal
is
to
provide
a
secure
financial
future
for
America.
Now
we
just.
C
Patty
Duke
is
our
new
social
security
spokesperson.
She
is
introducing
or
promoting
our
website
social
security
govt.
It's
a
wonderful
website
with
a
lot
of
good
information
and
tools
for
retirement
planning,
getting
information
about
Social,
Security
and
she's
agreed
to
promote
our
file
online
for
retirement
service.
It's
very
quick,
very
easy,
so
easy
a
social
security
retirement
application
can
be
done
within
15
minutes.
C
No
need
to
visit
an
office,
no
need
to
make
an
appointment
in
most
cases
fill
out
the
application
online
and
the
check
will
be
direct
deposited
into
your
bank
account,
so
we're
trying
to
promote
self
service.
You
know
we
shop
online
bank
online
date
online.
Why
can't
you
file
for
Social,
Security,
online,
okay,.
A
A
C
Yeah,
you
can
call
our
1-800
number
1
877
to
12
13
and
also
we
have
a
search
engine
on
our
website
to
at
social
security.gov.
It's
a
really
good
tool,
top
right-hand
corner
of
the
website,
there's
a
little
says,
questions
and
then
a
little
Go
button
and
click
that
little
go
button
and
a
search
engine
comes
up
and
it's
my
favorite
part
of
the
website.
You
type
in
a
keyword
or
key
phrase
and
frequently
asked
questions
relate
to
that
will
come
up
and
most
likely
you'll
find
your
answer
to
that
on
our
website.
C
Our
website
is
very,
very
easy
to
remember.
It's
just
social
security
govt
in
govt
is
for
government.
Aha.
So
that
way,
you
know
it's
a
secure
website.
It's
not
a
copycat
website
which
I
know
a
lot
of
seniors
are
concerned
or
worried
about,
and
when
that
comes
up,
you'll
see
it's
a
social
security
administration.
At
the
top
and
they'll
say
it
will
say,
the
official
website
of
the
Social
Security
Administration
you'll
see
a
picture
of
Patty
Duke.
C
The
public
service
announcement
that
you
just
saw
and
on
the
left-hand
side
you'll,
have
some
useful
links,
links
to
our
publications.
If
you
want
to
read
about
retirement
also
on
the
the
right-hand
side,
as
I
mentioned,
we
have
the
the
questions,
the
frequently
asked
questions
and
then
towards
the
middle.
You
have
three
major
categories
and
the
first
one
is
file
retirement
online,
and
so
that's
where
you
would
click
and
start
a
quick
15-minute
application
and
then
underneath
that
is
a
disability
link.
C
C
You
get
you
get
a
re-entry
number
where
you
can
go
back
in
and
start
where
you
left
off
and
and
I
can
say
that
it
saves
a
tremendous
amount
of
time
and
it
actually
delivers
a
better
product.
When
you
are
trying
to
file
your
disability
claim
and
then
in
terms
of
retirement,
we
have
a
lot
of
good
tools
where
you
it's
called
the
retirement
estimator.
C
You
would
just
go
in
and
put
in
your
name,
your
date
of
birth
and
some
identifying
information
and
tell
it
when
you're
going
to
stop
working
you're
going
to
stop
working
at
58
or
59,
and
it
would
calculate
an
estimate
for
you,
based
on
the
different
scenarios
that
that
you
tell
it.
So
it's
a
very
interactive
tool
in
helping
you
plan
for
your
retirement.
How.
C
Question
also
on
the
left-hand
side
of
the
the
website.
There's
there's
a
link
for
already
receiving
benefits
and
when
you
click
on
that
link
on
the
left-hand
side,
a
list
of
services
that
would
come
up
are
changing
your
address
online.
Signing
up
for
direct
deposit
online,
replacing
a
Medicare
card,
also
a
benefit
verification
and
then
also
tax
information.
At
the
end
of
the
year,
a
person
can
get
a
copy
of
their
1099,
because
social
security
benefits
can
be
taxable
ok,.
B
D
Thought
indoor
tanning
was
saying
they
said
their
tanning
rays,
we're
less
likely
to
cause
the
summer.
What
you
need
to
know
is
UV
light
from
indoor
tanning
can
cause
premature
aging,
including
wrinkles,
sagging
and
age
spots.
So,
instead
of
making
you
look
cool,
it
can
make
you
look
old
and
even
worse.
Uv
light
can
increase
your
risk
of
skin
cancer,
including
melanoma
the
deadliest
form
of
skin
cancer,
especially
when
exposed
at
an
early
age
and
treatment.
D
And
radiation,
in
fact,
current
estimates
are
that
one
in
five
Americans
develop
skin
cancer.
One
person
dies
from
melanoma
about
every
hour.
I
don't
want
to
be
one
of
them.
I
don't
want
to
be
one
of
them.
I
don't
want
to
be
one
of
them.
This
message
brought
to
you
by
the
American
Academy
of
Dermatology
I'm,
telling
you
indoor
tanning
is
not
as
safe
as
you
think
in.
D

B
A
Welcome
back
to
senior
moments,
I'm
dolly
semana
vich,
with
Linda
sanfino
from
the
Social
Security
Administration,
and
we
were
just
discussing
what
the
website
could
do
for
people
who
were
already
on
Social
Security,
and
you
were
telling
me
about
oh
that
people
could
change
their
address
and
so
on
on
the
website.
But
how
about
major
changes
like
divorce
and
remarriage?
And
they
have
things
like
that?
What
do
people
do
well.
C
Major
changes
like
that
a
person
should
visit
their
local
Social
Security
office
or
call
the
1-800
number
two
to
report
that
change,
because
a
lot
of
times
when
there's
a
major
change
like
that,
there
are
possibly
other
benefits
that
an
individual
could
be
eligible
for.
So,
for
example,
widows,
benefits
or
survivors
benefits.
C
C
Assume
that
our
family
log
on
to
Social,
Security,
govt
and
use
that
search
engine
that
I
talked
about
word
of
your
survivor.
Aha
click,
the
little
go
button
and
then
type
in
survivor
or
death
of
a
spouse,
also,
on
the
left
hand,
side,
there's
a
link
for
publications,
and
so
when
you
click
on
publications,
there's
a
list
of
different
types
of
literature
that
are
on
there
that
you
can
read
and
so
survivor
benefits
is
one
of
them.
Okay,.
C
Widow
remarries
after
age
60,
then
they
can
resume
collecting
benefits
on
their
their
deceased
spouse
if
they
were
getting
benefits
off
of
their
deceased
spouse
and
the
remarriage
after
age
60
would
not
affect
their
their
prior
benefits.
Now,
if
a
widow
or
widower
were
to
remarry
before
age
60,
then
those
window
benefits
would
stop
so.
C
A
Never
been
married
before
the
age
of
60
and
then
you
got
married
after
the
age
of
60.
What
would
happen
to
your
benefits?
Let's
say
you
worked
all
your
life,
and
so
your
benefits
would
be
higher
than
somebody
then
as
spouse.
What
would
happen?
Would
you
be
eligible
on
either
one?
Whichever
is
the
most?
If
you're
eligible
for
your.
C
A
C
A
A
You
said
before
that
a
person
can
set
up
their
own
their
own
retirement.
Can
you
go
a
little
bit
get
a
little
bit
more
specific
in
that?
What
do
I
do?
I
mean
I,
know:
I
can
go
in
there
and
and
set
it
up.
But
how
do
I
know
what
I
want
should
I?
We
should
I
retire.
What
are
what
do
I
do?
I
mean.
Is
it?
Is
it
the
right
time?
Is
there
anything
on
the
website
that
can
help
me.
C
Yes,
we
have
a
lot
of
retirement
planning
tools
on
our
website,
so
when
you're
thinking
about
retirement
first
thing,
you
should
probably
look
at
your
statement
that
comes
in
the
mail
every
year,
three
months
before
your
birthday,
that's
a
very
good
start
to
kind
of
get
an
idea
of
what
your
benefits
would
be
and
then
go
to
Social,
Security
govt
and
the
top
left
corner
of
the
website.
There's
a
tab
that
says
retirement
it
would
click
on
retirement
and
then
on
the
next
screen
that
comes
up.
You
would
click.
C
A
A
C
C
C
For
the
benefit,
so
a
lot
of
times,
you're
thinking
about
it,
maybe
six
months
beforehand
and
then
maybe
three
months
before
the
the
definite
date
that
you
think
you're
going
to
retire,
you
can
you
can
go
online.
Do
this
retirement
estimator,
you
know
file
the
application
online
and
then
that
way.
In
the
meantime,
if
you
have
any
questions
or
if
you
change
your
mind,
you
can
always
make
those
changes
in
time
before
you
know
the
actual
date
so.
A
C
You
know
things
are
always
changing.
You
know
this
is
your
plan
as
of
now
and
you're
scheduled
to
get
your
payment.
You
know
in
November,
and
you
know
this
great
opportunity
comes
up
to
to
start
a
new
job.
You
can
always
report
that
you've
gone
back
to
work
and
you
can
either
withdraw
your
application
or
just
suspend
it.
So
it's.
A
C
In
terms
of
retirement,
yet
again
you
could
use
some
of
the
calculators
that
we
have
online
the
publications
that
talk
about
retirement
so
for
preparation
for
retirement,
but
there's
other
things
on
the
website
too.
In
terms
of
replacing
a
social
security
card.
If
you've
lost
your
social
security
card
also,
we
have
a
very
popular
topic
around
Mother's
Day,
which
is
called
America's
most
popular
baby
names.
C
It's
a
good
Mother's
Day
favorite,
where
people
can
look
at
the
some
of
the
names
for
naming
their
their
newborn
babies,
identity
theft
is
another
big
topic
that
people
have
today.
You
can
go
online
and
look
at
publications
about
identity
theft,
also
in
the
front
page
of
the
website,
there's
a
little
section
on
the
right
that
says
information
about
and
then,
when
you
click
on
that
little
area,
it'll
have
a
drop-down
menu
and
so
there's
identity
theft,
the
America's
most
popular
baby
names.
C
A
C
A
A
A
C
C
Ways
when
being
identity
theft,
so
with
that
now
being
a
big
problem,
people
should
not
carry
their
social
security
numbers
or
cards
with
them.
It's
very,
very
rare
that
you
would
ever
have
to
show
the
card
to
anyone
and
and
the
times
that
you
would
is,
if
you
were
filing
for
a
new
job
and
even
then
employers
can
verify
social
security
numbers
online.
An
employer
can
register
to
to
verify
social
security
numbers,
so
they
don't
really
even
need
to
see
the
card.
C
So
you
should
never
give
out
your
number
unless
it's
absolutely
necessary
and
the
only
times
that
it's
really
absolutely
necessary
is
maybe,
if
you're,
opening
a
bank
account
or,
if
you're
filing
for
a
credit
card,
so
really
keeping
that
social
security
number
secret,
keeping
it
safe.
Another
thing
is
social
security
will
never
call
you
or
send
you
an
email
asking
for
your
banking
information
or
for
your
social
security
number,
because
we
already
have
that
information.
C
C
To
15
years
it
will
be
around
currently
we
operate
at
a
surplus,
so
in
other
words
the
Social
Security
taxes
that
that
come
in
currently
are
more
than
the
benefits
that
we
pay
out.
So
there
there
are
reserved
money's
in
the
Social
Security
trust
fund.
However,
in
2016,
if
there
are
no
changes
made
to
the
program,
we
will
have
to
start
using
some
of
those
reserves,
so
in
other
words,
in
2016.
The
taxes
that
come
in
through
payroll
taxes
will
not
be
more
than
what
we
pay
out
in
benefits.
C
So
we
will
have
to
start
using
some
of
the
reserves
in
the
trust
fund,
and
the
reason
for
that
is
the
demographics
are
changing.
You
have
a
large
population
of
baby
boomers
who
are
going
to
have
started
retiring
as
of
last
year
as
a
matter
of
fact,
and
the
baby
boomers
are
defined.
Those
born
nineteen,
forty
six
to
nineteen
sixty-four
and
we
estimate
close
to
80
million
baby
boomers
will
be
retired
at
some
point
and
so
in
2016
we'll
be
paying
out
more
benefits
than
we
take
in
and
again.
C
If
no
changes
are
made
in
twenty
thirty,
seven,
the
reserves
will
have
been
depleted
and
so
then,
we'll
only
be
operating
on
the
current
taxes
that
come
in
in
that
year,
in
twenty
thirty
seven
and
that's
projected
to
cover
about
73
to
78
percent
of
the
promised
benefits.
So
you
know,
we've
got
some
time
to
make
some
changes
to
make
sure
that
that
it
continues
beyond
twenty
thirty
seven.
But
a
lot
of
that
lays
in
the
hands
of
your
legislature.
C
A
C
C
C
A
In
other
words,
if
somebody's
disabled
and
let's
say
they
pull
in
a
certain
amount
of
money
per
year-
and
it's
not
quite
enough
to
live
them-
you're
saying
they
can't
own
another
property,
they
can,
they
can
own
the
house
they
live
in,
but
they
can't
own
another
property.
That's
right,
but
and
they
can't
have
more
than
two
thousand
dollars
in
the
bank.
Okay,
in
order
to
qualify
for
this
SSI
SSI
yeah.
A
A
C
Medicare
Medicare
is
for
those
over
age
65,
it's
America's
health
insurance
program
and
so
on.
The
front
page
of
our
website,
Social
Security,
govt,
far
right-hand
corner,
there's
a
Medicare
tab
at
the
top
and
when
you
click
on
Medicare
you'll
find
information
on
how
to
qualify
for
Medicare
who
qualifies
for
Medicare
and
in
a
broad
sense.
C
C
Our
website
social
security.gov
comes
in
English
and
it's
also
available
in
Spanish.
So
at
the
top
right
hand,
corner
of
the
