That
relationship
was
heightened
and
made
possible..
I
tell
you
this
because,
as
a
pastor
to
norman
and
danny,
I
want
to
acknowledge
that
norman's
faith
was
so
very
important
to
him.
His
sensibilities
and
approach
to
public
service
was
so
deeply
rooted
in
his
upbringing
and
his
faith
in
god..
It
shaped
his
deep
respect
and
care
for
others,
no
matter
your
religious
tradition,,
your
race,,
your
creed,,
your
socioeconomic
condition,,
your
gender
identity
or
sexual
orientation.
E
He
was
the
one
of
the
most
humble
public
servants.
You
will
ever
meet.
danny
once
told
me
that
he
carried
in
his
wallet
the
words
to
a
hymn
that
we
often
close
at
our
worship,
which
the
song,
the
words
to
which
this
this
song
is
go
now
in
peace..
The
words
say:
go
now
in
peace,
never
be
afraid,
god
will
go
with
you
each
hour
of
every
day.
Go
now
in
faith,
steadfast,,
strong
and
true.
No
god
will
guide
you
in
all
that
you
do
go
now
in
love
and
show.
E
E
Known
by
many
names,
through
many
faith
traditions,
we
gather
this
day
to
share
the
sadness
of
our
loss
of
our
beloved
norman
yoshio
minetta..
He
will
be
sorely
missed..
It
is
right
and
good
that
we
should
come
together
to
share
the
pain
of
our
loss
to
comfort
one
another
in
our
sorrow..
Our
hearts
especially
go
out
to
his
wife,
danny,,
his
children,
david
and
christine.,
bob
and
kelly,,
stuart
and
scarlet,
and
mark
and
wendy
and
all
of
norman's
grandchildren,
and
our
love
goes
out
also
to
norman's.
First
wife
me
as
well.,
but
we
also
god.
E
E
E
Of
amazing
grace,
you
norman,
you
know
norman
loved,
our
nation
deeply
and
because
of
it
he
worked
so
tirelessly
and
through
a
lifelong
career,
helped
to
make
our
nation
better..
We
thank
you
so
much
for
the
great
legacy
he
has
left
behind..
We
thank
you
that
norman
was
surrounded
by
the
love
of
family
throughout
his
life
and
we
celebrate
how
norman
made
anyone
and
everyone
feel
like
family
to
him..
Oh
god,.
E
C
My
honor
to
join
you
in
san
jose
this
morning
during
the
time
coproducer
tabernacles
me
and
I
will
work
with
naum
on
the
documentary..
We
got
to
know
him
and
the
manetta
family
pretty
well..
It
all
started
after
norma
left
congress
when
I
began
asking
him
to
consider
a
documentary
about
his
life.,
but
he
always
demurred.
in
2012.
C
C
His
modest
way.
his
storyline
to
me
was
that
one
wants
to
see
a
documentary
about
me.,
I'm
just
an
average
joe,
but
I
think
you
said
yes
when
the
timing
was
right
for
him
and
because
we
just
saw
him
down,
it
would
take
another
seven
years
of
fundraising
and
production
before
the
film
was
broadcast
nationally
on
pbs
in
2019
and.
C
C
Never
forgot
his
roots,,
his
immigrant
parents,
his
years
at
heart,
mountain,,
wyoming
or
his
time
in
san
jose..
They
were
all
part
of
the
man
he
would
become..
One
incident
in
particular
stands
out
of
my
mind
and
a
documentary
producers
are
supposed
to
present
a
fair
and
balanced
portrait
of
their
subject,
but
enormous
case..
It
was
challenging
to
find
anyone
who
would
say
anything
negative
about.
We
decided
to
interview.
C
Former
member
of
congress
and
state
attorney
general
dan
lungren,,
a
republican
who
voted
against
the
civil
liberties
act
of
1988,
which
provided
redress
and
reparations
for
japanese
americans
incarcerated
during
world
war
two..
When
mr.
lungren
appeared
for
the
interview,,
I
had
already
briefed
him
on
his
role
speaking
about
norm
as
a
political
adversary..
So
when
the
camera
rolled,
I
asked
in
congress,
you
said
on
different
sides
of
the
table.
Tell
me
about
norm
mineta
as
a
political
adversary
and,
as
first
words
were
norm,
mineta
the
nicest
guy
you'll
ever
meet?.

Asian-American

was
the

and
therefore
to
chair
a
congressional
committee..
It
was
the
first
asian-american
in
the

before
he
was
any
of
those
things..
His
family
was
in
a
japanese

in

Two.
he's
got
guts.
A
Well,,
how
can
you
do
that?,
you
better
check
so
and
so,
and
I
believe
his
phrase
always
is
you
just
do
what's
right
right?
After
9/11,
I
was
deeply
concerned
that
our
country
would
lose
its
way
and
treat
people
who
may
not
worship
like
their
neighbor
as
non-citizens.,
so
I
went
to
a
mosque
and
in
some
ways
at
my
normal
example
inspired
me.

All
know,
when
norma
turned
to
sansei
after
the
war,
he
encountered
the
silence
that
so
many
nisei
children
experience
from
jose
elders.
Parents
struggle
to
suppress
the
pain
of
the
loss
of
their
homes,,
their
freedom
and
years
of
their
lives.,
the
confinement
at

or

As
so
many

how

worked

I
General
found
himself
summoned
to
a
meeting
with
the
secretary
right
at
the
start
of
the
administration..
He
was
nervous
to
the
point
of
being
petrified
by
this.,
but
the
secretary
aim
was
to
establish
as
constructive
a
relationship
as
possible
from
the
beginning.
He
should
have
known
years
before
following
difficult
testimony
in
front
of
a
committee.
He
got
a
call
from
congressman
minetta,
who
assured
him
that
it
was
his
job
to
speak
truth
to
authority..
One

I
during
one
of
the
crises,
the
secretary
called
me
into
his
office..
He
was
hearing
from
oil
company
executives
unhappy
at
how
the
coast
guard
was
slow
to
reopen
ports..
What
should
I
know
about
this??
He
asked.,
I
had
to
think
fast,.
I
said
sir,,
I'm
sure
all
the
captains
of
the
ports
grasp
the
implications
of
being
closed
to
traffic.
however,.
They
have
to
be
sure
everything
is
safe.
If
a
ship
encounters
some
kind
of
unseen
damage
or
obstruction,
then
everything
is
ten
times
worse..
He
listened
and
said.
Ok,.

It
definitely

It
also
happened
to

true.
He
was
there
to

on
my
captains

and
apple's
boards..
He
came
to
cleveland
when
I
took
over
the
great
lakes
district,
where
I
am
happy
to
say,
I
was
able
to
compose
myself
during

he's
been

This
doesn't
exactly
make
my
point
about
selflessness

we
met,
some
of
the

as

me
to

It's
not
surprising
that
when
I

find
a
place,
it
was
only
a
handful
of

away
from
