Serverless is a good pattern when it comes to saving infrastructure resources: why should you run apps when there’s nothing to do? The open source project Knative is often used to run functions as serverless apps in Kubernetes clusters.

In this talk, you’ll see how to leverage Knative for Kubernetes apps, not only functions. Check out how to apply serverless patterns to an existing Spring Boot / Nodejs app (backend / frontend) with a live demo.

🤓 SPEAKER: Alexandre Roman, Tanzu Senior Solution Engineer, VMware

🤓 SPEAKER: Flavio Castelli, Distinguished Engineer @ SUSE

KCD Italy 2021* - The video of the talks are now available!

Many companies are experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of their Kubernetes clusters, for reasons such as geographical/legislative constraints, data/service replication, etc. However, when the number of clusters increases, the complexity of deploying apps, managing the entire multi-cluster infrastructure, and keeping its state under control, becomes rapidly an unmanageable problem.

A possible solution is Liqo, an open-source project that simplifies the creation of multi-cluster topologies by replicating the Kubernetes “cattle” model also to clusters.
Liqo creates a virtual cluster that spans multiple real clusters, either on-prem or managed (AKS, EKS, GKE), and instantiates the desired applications seamlessly in the appropriate cluster. This talk will discuss the potentials and roadblocks of this vision and highlight how Liqo brings multi- cluster transparency to the users.

🤓 SPEAKER: Alex Palesandro, Research Assistant @ Politecnico di Torino

This talk is a journey through the wonders and mysteries of Kubernetes namespaces. While being a known feature of Kubernetes, there are a number of not so well known things to know about them that can teach a lot about Kubernetes. During the talk we will not only take a look at the details of Kubernetes namespaces, but also show how they are used in different production scenarios.

KCD Italy 2021* - The video of the talks are now available!

Kubernetes has become the new application server of modern cloud-native applications.
Efficiency is one of the top benefits, thanks to containers' lean resource footprint and Kubernetes ability to pack them while ensuring performance isolation.

The reality can be different: many teams adopting Kubernetes see high infrastructure costs and performance issues. Why is that? Applications need to be carefully configured to achieve the touted benefits, but Kubernetes resource management is tricky and there are many microservices to be tuned.

In this talk, we analyze Kubernetes resource management concepts from a performance and reliability perspective. We then show how AI can help developers and SREs to achieve the right balance among low costs and optimal application performance and reliability, automating the sizing of container resource settings driven by your application SLOs.

🤓 SPEAKER: Stefano Doni, CTO @ Akamas

Kubernetes is a powerful and highly configurable tool, but by default it's extremely insecure. In this live hacking session, I'll show how an attacker can expand the blast radius of an application exploit through to control of the entire cluster whilst demonstrating the misconfigurations which allow this to occur and showing how you can avoid these scenarios in the real world.

"Delay is the deadliest form of denial." C. Northcote Parkinson
We live in times when an application or service lag of even 2 seconds can be too long. Building a reliable Cloud Native distributed system means preventing failures and minimizing their effects to keep the system stable.
Join me to explore graceful recovery from unexpected scenarios using live coded examples of the well-known circuit breaker and retry patterns at the application level and complement those in the infrastructure (Kubernetes) with service discovery, load balancing, and load shedding patterns.
