Navigating the Cloud Native Community for End Users - Cheryl Hung, CNCF
As Director of Ecosystem at the CNCF, my mission is to foster the End User community, ensure end users' voices are well represented and ultimately, that organizations can adopt cloud native successfully.
Through 45 interviews conducted in December 2018, I found that end users face three broad challenges:
* Solving an immediate technical need
* Growing an engineering team
* Building business strategy around cloud native I will describe how to overcome these challenges with the help of the CNCF, and the CNCF's strategy for end users in 2019.

the
cloud
Native
community
for
end
users,
so
I'm
sure
I'm,
the
director
of
ecosystem
at
the
CN,
CF
and
I
want
to
answer
the
following
questions
today.
So
what
is
the
end
user
community?
How
does
it
work?
How
do
you
get
involved?
But
before
I
go
into
these
questions?

Companies
use
these
open
source
projects
to
build
products.
They
generate
profits
from
these
products
and
then
reinvest
some
of
those
profits
back
into
open
source.
And
then,
hopefully
you
go
around
in
this
circle
and
you
do
more
and
more
and
more
so
as
a
nonprofit,
it's
funded
primarily
through
membership.
So
here
are
lots
of
logos
to
show
you
and
some
more
dough
goes
and
some
more
logos
so
yeah.
We
have
a
lot
of
a
lot
of
members.

So
this
approach
has
done
pretty
well.
So,
if
you've
seen
this,
this
is
the
CNC
F
landscape
and
an
overview
of
all
the
products
and
projects
that
are
available
in
cloud
native.
But
your
first
instinct
on
seeing
this
is
probably
oh,
my
god,
how
many
things
are
there
out
there?
How
am
I,
possibly
supposed
to
make
a
choice
as
of
all
the
projects
in
all
the
products,
what
the
CNC
F
doesn't
do.

Is
it
doesn't
tell
you
if
you
are
building
the
right
thing
or
if
you've
chosen
the
right
thing,
so
what
a
consultancy
might
do
it
doesn't
do
support,
so
you
can't
go
to
the
CNC
F
and
say:
I've
got
a
problem
with
my
system.
Can
you
help
me
fix
it
and
it
doesn't
do
feature
roadmaps,
so
you
can't
say:
I
need
this
built
in
the
next
six.
Can
you
help
me
tell
the
projects
that
they
need
to
do
it?

The
CNC
F
was
set
up
with
three
bodies:
the
governing
board,
who
managed
the
budget
and
the
marketing
the
technical,
Oversight
Committee,
who
are
the
nine
elected
architects
from
the
community
and
they
decide
which
projects
come
in
and
out
of
the
CNC
F
and
then
the
end
user
community.
An
end
user
community
has
two
responsibilities:
one
is
to
feedback
requirements
and
projects,
requirements
and
feedback
on
the
projects
to
the
TOC,
and
the
second
one
is
to
act
as
a
check
on
the
vendors
becoming
too
dominant.
In
theory,
these
three
are
equal
bodies.

Over
the
last
three
years,
it's
grown
pretty
fast
and
around
January
2018
when
it
started
going
towards
40
and
then
50
companies.
The
CNC
F,
looked
to
find
someone
who
could
actually
manage
this
group
of
companies,
which
is
where
I
came
in
so
I
was
hired
in
October
of
2018,
with
the
mission
to
understand
what
end
users
need
from
the
cloud
native
community
and
then
to
ensure
that
end
users
are
really
active
and
really
engaged
and
have
a
full
say
in
what
happens
so
before.

I
continue
with
this
slide,
I
spoke
to
a
lot
of
end
users,
probably
40
or
50
different
end
users
and
I
asked
them.
What
are
your
challenges?
What
can
the
CNC
F
do
for
you
and
I
came
up
with
three
broad
topics,
so
the
first
one
is:
how
do
I
navigate
the
ecosystem
with
so
many
choices,
so
many
projects
so
many
channels
that
I
can
engage
in?
How
do
I
find
the
right
people
who
can
solve
the
problems
that
I
have
today.

The
second
challenge
is
how
do
I
hire
engineers?
I
was
previously
managing
a
DevOps
engineering
team
and
it
is
so
hard
to
find
anybody
with
production,
kubernetes
experience,
I
think
I
had
two
I
spoke
to
people
who
were
DevOps
engineers
who
were
shipping
software
on
DVDs
still
I'm
like.
How
is
that
a
DevOps
engineer,
I
mean
I,
don't
know
so
anyway.
There's
a
big
gap
between
what
the
what
companies
won
and
what
skills
actually
they're
now
and
then
the
third
one
is
aligning
your
business
strategy
with
cloud
native.

So
no,
actually
we
have
a
close
mailing
list.
We
have
a
closed,
some
closed
cause
and
we
have
a
private
repo
and
the
reason
for
this
is
because
vendors
can
very
easily
dominate
when
they
come
in
and
start
talking
and
vendors
love
to
speak
to
end-users
and
I
have
had
people,
companies
join
and
say
we're
startup
doing
AI
with
kubernetes,
and
we
think
all
of
your
end-users
will
will
be
really
interested.
Can
we
have
all
of
their
email
addresses
like
no?
Of
course
you
can't.

You
know
it's
not
it's
not
amazingness,
it's
not
a
marketing
spam
thing,
but
if
you
make
everything
open,
then
vendors
will
jump
in
and
start
to
start
to
dominate.
So
the
purpose
of
this
is
to
provide
a
space
away
from
that,
but
you
don't
need
to
join,
to
use
or
to
contribute
to
any
of
these
projects.
So
lift
and
envoy
is
a
really
good
example
of
a
company.

So
first,
first
of
all,
events
like
coupon
I
think
are
a
fantastic
way
to
actually
find
out
what's
happening,
so
we
give
our
end
user
companies,
five
free
tickets
to
cube
con
and,
as
you'll
see
later,
the
cost
of
this
is
actually
the
the
cost
of
joining
is
lower
than
the
cost
of
five
free
cube
contacts.
So
we
subsidize
end
users
to
come
to
cube
cotton.

We
make
it
easy
to
engage
with
peers,
so
the
challenge
for
end
users
is:
we
want
to
find
a
company
who
is
twelve
months
ahead
of
us
and
we
want
to
learn
from
their
decisions
and
avoid
any
mistakes
that
they
made.
So
we
have
groups
around
develop
experience
because
almost
every
company
is
building
their
own
different
dashboards
and
different
internal
portals
right
now,
and
we
have
user
groups
starting
up
around
finance
and
telecoms,
and
these
are
going
to
collaborate
on
the
projects
and
requirements
that
are
specific
to
that
industry,
engaging
with
projects.

Okay,
hiring
engineers
so
Spotify
a
really
good
example
of
a
company
that
talks
very
openly
about
what
it's
doing
so.
They've
spoken
at
a
lot
of
CN
CF
conferences.
They
host
meetups,
they
employer,
CN,
CF
ambassador,
who
is
someone
who
runs
Meetup
and
they
publish
case
studies
and
they're,
not
doing
this
purely
out
of
the
goodness
of
their
own
heart.
For
for
end-users
in
particular,
it's
really
hard
to
be
known
as
a
cool
company,
that's
doing
a
lot
of
stuff
using
modern
infrastructure
and
solving
interesting
problems.

This
is
why
we
had
28%
of
talks
from
end
users
last
time
and
I
would
love
to
get
that
number
a
bit
higher,
because
the
case
studies
and
the
real
world
journeys
I
think
are
the
most
interesting
and
it's
where
you
learn
the
most
so
I
nudge
and
encourage
our
end
user
members
to
submit
talks
and
I
give
them
some
early
guidance
as
well.
So
if
it's
the
first
time
that
you've
done
a
talk
and
you're
nervous
about
doing
the
CFP
process,
then
I
helped
give
some
early
feedback
on
that.

Okay
lining
with
cloud
native
Bloomberg
is
a
really
good
example
of
a
company
that
have
been
really
active
in
defining
what
the
CNC
F
does
and
the
projects
so
for
them.
The
ability
to
participate
in
the
TOC
means
that
they
have
a
few.
They
can
define
the
future
direction
of
these
projects
and
they
want
to
have
that
voice.

Okay,
so
I
asked
one
of
the
members
why
they
were
even
part
of
the
ciencia
and
they
said
it's
not
an
option
not
to
do
open
source.
If
we
don't
get
involved,
someone
else
will
and
we'll
fall
behind
simple
as
that.
Okay,
how
do
you
get
involved
just
to
remind
people
what
I'm
talking
about
now
specifically
refers
to
end
users?
So
it's
not
vendors
and
it's
not
consultancies.

So
in
terms
of
cost,
there's
it's
significantly
cheaper
to
be
an
end-user
supporter,
then,
is
to
be
an
end-user
member
and
the
it's
forty
five
hundred
dollars,
which
is
probably
cheaper
than
the
cost
of
companies
flying
with
their
people
here
and
actually
getting
hotels
here
and
eighteen
hundred
if
you've
got
less
than
three
hundred
employees
and
the
nice
thing
about
this.
Is
that
the?
If
you
I
said
before,
if
you
go
for
end-user
supporter,
you
get
five
free,
coupon
tickets.
You
can
also
convert
the
other
way.

So
we
have
about
ten
minutes

Oh
yeah,
okay,
that's
my

This
is
my
second
sales
pitch
side,
but
really
what
I
want
is
for
end-users
to
be
part
of
the
community
and
have
a
voice
and
be
heard,
because
if
you're
not
then
said
other
people
will
take
over,
we
now
have
eighty-eight
companies
in
the
end
user.

a
full
disclosure
I'm
a
vendor,
but
in
in
that
so
I
really
appreciate
it.
Learning
about
the
end
user
cream.
You
know,
I
didn't
really
know
very
much
about
that
at
all.
Before
wanting
to
respect
the
like
vendor
free
zones,
are
there
ways
that
as
a
vendor,
I
should
and
can
engage
with
that
and
your
community,
and
how
does
that
work
so.

I
work
with
the
vendors
I
work
with
the
vendors,
who
are
members
of
the
CNC
F
to
kind
of
introduce
them
to
the
end-user
members,
but
it
tends
to
be
one-off
or
small
groups.
As
I
said,
I'm
I'm
a
bit
wary
of
just
giving
full
on
mailing
list
and
saying
everybody,
but
I
do
facilitate
those
conversations.
