Modern software is built on open source projects, and in turn, the success of any open source project hinges on its community members and their contributions. So how do we create communities with active contributors and ensure our open source projects benefit from their innovative ideas? At Kasten by Veeam, we are working to build an open source community whose members contribute often, and in meaningful ways to our open source cloud native projects. During this session, a member of the technical staff from Kasten, Le Tran will share some insights on our journey to build an open source community, including the benefits and challenges that come with creating a contributing culture in an organization.

I have and thank you for the opportunity for talking again, I'm lee I'm with cassand by veeam, where we focus on kubernetes data management, backup and disaster recovery, and for the next few minutes, I'd like to talk about the challenges that surround building open source community and what we at casting in the community can do to help being a developer, as many of us are means working and developing on a open.

My apologies being a developer, as many of us are means leveraging a modern development stack that is built upon the open source projects and the open source community and, as many of us know, for great ideas to turn to great projects. It relies on the community for adoption, for feedback and for contribution.

Therefore, wherever possible, it's really important for us to consume and then contribute back to the open source project so that the ecosystem that we know now can continue to grow and thrive well being in the open source world. Consumer also contributor.

So if we ask ourselves what are the challenges that contributors face, what might be hitting us from doing more to open source project? Some of the challenges start to bubble up things like. When do we get to work on these open source projects or what is there to work on? How do we make sure that our work are meaningful and impactful, or how do we get on board? And if we have any question, what do we ask well we're here to help?

I would like to talk about four initiatives that casting have taken actively to address these challenges. The four initiatives are time, having a clear vision, having training resources and the philosophy of open source first, first and foremost time.

Let's start by providing time for our developers to contribute upstream to open source project, and this should be an open and rewarding experience that is supported and encouraged by employers, for example, at casting our developers have the opportunity to contribute upstream to projects like kubernetes, copia, coopster and others, and speaking of others, for the next couple initiatives. I'd like to use a concrete example. So, let's take a look at an open source project at casting called canister, which is an application level data management framework in kubernetes and a canister.

We focus on community improvement by making sure that the project is inclusive to all and that the community have the right amount of support so going back to our list of initiatives. The second initiative like to talk about is having a clear vision, which means having a clear path with things like project governance, roadmap and contributing guidelines to help contribute to understand how to get the work except fast and easy.

For example, a canister there's a practice, governance that outlines the overall organization of the project with the different roles and responsibilities that you can take on. So someone new to canister can understand where their work may land them on the contributor path.

There's also contributing guidelines with technical documentation like what kind of coding standard would adhere to, or what is the pull request submit process. So someone new to cancer understand how to get the work accepted fast and easy and, of course, there's a road map. If folks are ever wondering what to work on, they can check out the canister roadmap that outline the future milestone, as well of all of the current open issue that are classified with labels, so that folks can understand.

What's going on- or you know pick your very first issue and I'm happy to say, we've seen concrete results since this initiative have been implemented, we've seen an increase in number of external contributors and we've also seen the fruit of collaboration between our internal team and external contributor. Specifically, we have developed together a blueprint for a production application and now that blueprint is available for anyone to use which is awesome.

The third initiative I'd like to talk about today is having training resources. Let's have the necessary training to help folks get on board to the projects, as well as providing a safe space for everyone to ask questions and to discuss their work to serve this purpose. Canister have extensive documentation for getting started the hello world of canister, if you will, with things like the readme page, youtube video with demo, so that folks can get started with the project we also meet.

We also have great community space meeting twice a month to provide space for everyone to get together to discuss about your work as well as ask questions and in between. And the last initiative I'd like to talk about today is the philosophy of open source first, which means we should always consume open source projects directly upstream and likewise develop our contribution out in the open and make it visible for the community to see, and that is my time.
