Panel Discussion: Growing Diversity in Open Source Projects – Moderated by April Nassi, Google
Diversity in open source projects is worse than in tech overall. When GitHub surveyed 5,500 open source users and developers from around the world on a range of topics, it also asked for demographic information. Of that randomly selected cohort, a full 95 percent of respondents were male. Only three percent identified as female. This panel discussion will be focused on what we can and should do to increase the number of people with different backgrounds, skill sets and experience working on open source projects. The panel comprises of 3 women who work on various key aspects of the Istio project and participate in the Cloud Native community.

privileged
to
work
with
two
of
these
amazing
women
I'm
managing
the
technical
program
managers
under
the
services
in
Google
cloud
and
I've,
been
with
Google
for
about
six
months,
so
I'm
pretty
new
to
the
open
source
world
into
the
community,
and
before
that,
I
worked
at
VMware
also
involved
in
programs
in
the
open
source
community
in
areas
in
VMware
and
Jasmine.

I
work
at
Google
and
I've,
been
there
for
about
four
years,
I
specifically
work
on
Sto,
which
is
an
open
source
project
when
I'm
not
doing
my
day.
Job
I
have
a
start-up
which
uses
3d
camera
to
help
and
improve
user's
posture,
I'm,
also
a
contributing
writer
for
New,
York,
Times,
Huffington,
Post
and
wired.
But
these
days
I
get
to
do
very
little
of
all
of
those,
because
I
have
a
two-month-old
who's,
giving
me
very
busy
and.

joined
Google
three
years
ago.
I
am
a
software
engineer
for
more
than
eleven
years,
the
first
day
I
joined
the
Google
I
started
working
on
open
source
project,
which
was
called
Cloud
endpoints,
yes,
P,
and
it
was
a
ng
ax
based
proxy,
which
provides
a
security
and
monitoring
for
applications
running
behind
it.
Then,
after
that
I,
when
the
sto
project
starts,
I
switched
from
cloud
endpoint
security
to
each
new
security
and
then
I
worked
only
safe
security.

then
correct.

I
started
working
on
the
Istrian
project
since
I
guess
about
a
year
ago.
We,
my
management
team,
asked
me:
hey
you
just
got
promoted,
there's
talkest,
not
I
was
working
on
docker
for
IBM
cloud,
and
a
project
was
interesting,
very
well
and
back
then
I
think
the
management
made
the
right
decision,
because
you
guys
can
probably
see
the
dockable
wasn't
very
crowded
in
tech
conference
this
year.
So
they
were
asking
me.
Well,
we
are
going
to
increase
of
a
contribution
to
Cuba
net
ecosystem
and
SEO
was
a
project
they
wanted
me
to
work
on.

was
actually
quite
hesitant
at
I
was
like
geez
I
haven't
worked
on
open
source
for
a
long
time,
but
I
decided
to
take
up
the
challenging
and
what
kind
of
SEO
and
I
am
really
happy
actually
did.
I
was
able
to
work
with
the
amazing
people
in
the
community
been
learning
every
day.
So
it's
been
a
really
good
experience.
For
me
outside
of
work.
I
have
two
kids:
I
have
a
13
year
old.
Is

teenage
and
dirty
old,
which
I
actually
brought
to
cube
come
with
me,
so
I
feel
like
I'm.

to

of
try

childcare
program

good
it
is

everything

at

decided
to
have

just
back
in
the
day
when
you

like
everyone
else,
I
was
using
Windows
95
three
years
later
reaches
wait
because
there
are
bugs
and
vo
on
new
features
and
then
there's
windows,
98
and
there's
really
nothing
much.

came
across
Linux
and
to
me
it
was
like
wow.
Oh,
it
was
a
whole
new
experience.

sure
there
was
a
product
that
you
can
turn
it
into
what
you
want.

that
was
my
first
interest
into
the
whole
concept
of
open
source,
but
I
gotta
be
honest.

really

not
contribute
much
in
that
space
until
I
started.

worked

points
now
on
SEO
and
so
yeah.
That's
how
I
got
into
great.

us

I
also
started
working
on
open
source
after
I
joined
Coco
before
that
I
was
in
VMware
and
I
never
worked
on
open
source
before
and
yeah
I
think
the
open
source
experience
was
a
pretty
good
and
I
started
out
from
the
core
endpoints
project.
It
was
the
Arabic
Aeneid.

guess
I
have
a
longer
here,
working
on
open
source,

Think
back
then,
when
we
were
working
on
application,
server,
IBM
purchase
a
company
called
glue
code
which
become
a
lightweight
version
of
application
server,
so
that's
backed
by
Apache
project
called
Apache
Geronimo,
so
I
started
working
part-time,
open
source
on
that
I
did
gain
a
committed
status
to
their
project
and
become
a
pima
embassy.
I
think
it's
project
management,
community
member
and
after
that
I've
also
become
a
committed
to
Apache
Ares,
which
is
another
project.

So
out
of
these
project
instruments,
the
one
actually
that's
most
exciting
to
me,
because
I
really
like
the
diversity
of
the
project
out
of
the
two
year
three
project,
I
worked
on
only
sto
was
like
a
real,
diverse
projects
that
has
a
rich
ecosystem
and
growing
number
of
commuters
from
where
is
different
companies.
My
other
cue
project
was
pretty
much
the
idea
of
dominant
project,
which
is
not
really
as
exciting
as
a
project.
That's
really
well.
That
was
a
fight,
so
I'm
really
happy
to
be
the
place.
I
mean
to
work
on
this
project.

there's
there
was
a
survey
done
by
was
it
jazzmin,
I
think
around
women
in
the
open-source
community
and
their
their
multiple
surveys,
but
the
statistics
overall
in
the
market
today
are,
if
you
count
all
departments
you
have
about
30
to
40
depends
on
the
company
high-tech
company
when
women
are
part
of
the
company,
but
that
includes
marketing
HR,
all
supporting
roles.
When
you
go
to
the
tech
roles,
it
dwindles
down
to
fifteen
to
twenty
twenty-five,
really
pushes
it,
but
mostly
it's
about
twenty.

But
then,
if
you
go
to
the
open-source
projects,
the
stats
vary
between
three
percent,
which
was
the
5500
sample
population.
That
was
done
in
that
survey
to
five
max
and
the
question
that
I
have
for
this
panel,
because
you
are
the
selected
few
is.
Why
do
you
think
this
is
the
case?
What
is
in
these
particular
projects
that
cause
that
sort
of
skewed
low
female
population?

When
you
work
for
a
place
like
IBM
or
Google
or
Oracle,
we
have
HR
departments,
we
have
policies
in
place.
Yeah
there
are
times
people
do
things
that
are
unacceptable
and
they
get
away
with
it,
but
most
of
the
times
those
systems
work
really
well.
But
we
don't
have
anything
like
that.
An
open-source
right
in
that
same
survey,
they
were
trying
to
figure
out
what
kind
of
bad
behaviors
happen
and
it's
a
spectrum.
It
goes
all
the
way
from
name-calling
and
mild
insults
all
the
way
down
to
stalking
and
harassment.

You
know
documentation
and
you
can
look
it
up
and
I
think
over
40,000
projects
have
already
adopted
that
including
projects
like
tensorflow,
and
so,
if
you
work
on
a
project
that
does
not
have
a
code
of
conduct
that
might
be
the
easiest
place
to
start
right,
create
one
or
adopt
contributors
covenant
or
do
both
it's
not
difficult
to
do,
and
if
you
see
behavior
that
it's
not
unacceptable,
and
if
you
witness
it,
of
course
it's
you
don't
have
to
just
speak
up
for
yourself.
You
also
speak
up
for
others
in
that
same
survey.

It
was
interesting
because
they
said
50
percent
of
people
have
witnessed
some
sort
of
bad
behavior,
and
that
alone
was
a
deterrent
for
them
to
enter
into
a
project.
If
you
think
about
it
for
projects
where
they
don't
have
any
rules
and
where
the
behavior
is
bad,
one
in
every
two
person
decided
to
walk
away
from
it
because
they
didn't
think
it
was
welcoming
enough.
So
I
think
that's
an
easy
fix.

Usually
good
to
have
moderators
but
I
think
we
all
own
the
responsibility
right
and
I'll
give
a
very
specific
example.
With
this
year
when
we
started
this,
we
didn't
have
I
mean
even
now,
it's
a
relatively
young
project.
It's
been
around
for
like
two
years.
We
launched
it
to
one
dot
a
few
months
ago
right,
so
we
have
hundreds
of
contributors,
not
thousands
or
millions,
but
even
with
that,
there
was
an
example
where
we
had
a
dog,
and
there
were
just
the
comments.
People
are
so
passionate,
it
started
getting
escalated,
you
know,
and
they
were.

Who
are
you
to
talk
about?
This
I
know
better.
You
know
that
sort
of
behavior-
and
we
have
swen-
who
is
the
founder
of
history
here
and
he's
played
he's,
played
a
huge
role
in
actually
carving
that
sort
of
behaviour,
Ben
and
I
know
to
some
of
that.
We
reached
out
to
the
people
again,
because
it's
a
relatively
smaller
project
we
reached
out
to
we
know
who
the
contributors
are
we
reached
out
to
them.
We
had
a
conversation,
a
lot
of
it.
If
you
think
about
it,
was
not
intended
right.
It
was
not
malicious.

it's
interesting,
I
don't
want
to
hog
them,
but
there
was
a
study
that
said
women's
cold
I
mean
if
I
was
sure
if
I'm
going
to
submit
a
PR,
the
likelihood
of
it
being
accepted
and
people
not
you

getting
into
all
these
debates
and
issues,
it's
a
lot
lower.
If
I
don't
put
a
picture
of
myself
there
and
if
I
have
a
name,
that's
not
very
gender,
specific,
that's
sad!
It's
it's

Think
one
way
to
combat
that
would
be
to,
but
there
are
lots
of
different
ways
to
combat
it.

we
all
have
impostor
syndrome,
especially
with
women
right
and
you
I
think
it
was
a
Hemingway
who
famously
said
time
is
at
least
of
what
we
have
so
instead
of
somebody
struggling
with
the
project
figuring
out
where
to
start
and
how
to
get
involved,
you
could
tag
issues
where
you
know
could
be
a
starter
issue
for
someone
who
was
in
the
sidelines
but
want
to
get
involved.
With
this
deal
we
actually
label
issues
with
Help
Wanted,
which
is
a
great
place
for
someone
to
get
started
and
beyond
that.

our

helps

great
extent,

setting
the
stage

started.
Issues

good
way
to
encourage
them
to
step

once
they

struggling.

things
like
mentorship.

do
recognition.
There
is
Red
Hat.
Has
they
give
out
awards
every
year
for
women
and
open
source?
So
if
you
know
someone
who's
working
on
it
and
if
you
think
they're
doing
a
fantastic
job,
you
should
nominate
them.

part
of
our
daily

start
getting
into
open
source
or
maybe
affording

a
little
bit
different.

get
into
open
source
audience

people

not
paid
for
contributing
to
open
source
world
and
for
for
these
kind
of
people,
I
think
I
said
it
will
be
benefit.

we
have
some
kind
of
program
that
attract
these
people
who
come
into

contribute
to
open
source
projects.

saying
if
the
other
guy
can
finish
his
sentence
because
they
have
the
exact
same
sauce,
then
why
would

two

So
that's
what
I
always
kind
of
encouraged
me
to
you

I

different
opinion
to
kind
of
say
it
out
loud
in
a
design
document,
but
the
reality
is
a
lot
of
other
people.

they
may
not
appreciate
a
different
angle.

diverse
opinion,
so
it's
just
very
hard
for
women
to
get
their
words
out
there
and
that
may
not
even
be
accepted
and
I
think
that's
also
related
to
the
PIO
issue
and
comment
on
designer
commenting
on
github
issues.
So
this
is
intimidating
and
not
be
able
to
have
a
diverse
thoughts
around
within
the
community.
I
think
that's
two
of
the
hard
things
I
had
the
third
heart
saying.
Also
open
source
normally
comes
with
travel.
I
know
when
my
kids
were
young,
you
know
I'm,
not
how
to
travel
and
I.

Think
woman
tends
to
be
a
little
bit
more
content
with
their
jobs
in
general.
They
are
not
I.
Think
man
I'm,
mostly
more
aggressive
as
far
as
moving
up
to
their
career
ladder,
be
able
to
travel,
get
to
the
conference.
I
feel
I
was
the
same
when
I
was
having
my
kids
at
baby.
Your
toddler
age,
I
think
I'm
a
little
bit
growing
through
that
age.
You
could
grow
out
of
that
age,
but
I
think
that
has
been
a
factor
for
me
personally,
oh
so
yeah

think
we
need
to
have
moderators
I
do
think
there
needs
to
be
some
sort
of
responsibility
by
the
projects
that
run
open
source,
but
I
also
don't
want
to
exclude
the
fact
that
there
are
a
lot
of
people
who
contribute
to
it
right
around

world
and
that's
the
whole
point
of
open
source.
The
entry
is
not
that
you
have
an
employment
or
there's
an
interview.
You
know
like
the
only
thing
that
stopping
you
from
contributing
is
your
interest
and
level
of
commitment.

not

moderator,
I
think
if
you
encountered
that
sort
of
behavior
it's
it's
important
to
call
it
out,
I
think
in
some
ways
the
responsibility
lies
within
all
of
us.

fact
that
there's

guys
don't
care
about
it
right.
There
are
so
many
events
happening
at
this
very
time,
but
you've
taken
the
time
to
walk
across
with
tightly
different
building
by
the
way.

job

every
single

somebody's

to
make
sure
that

are

are

mentorship
program

Foundation

us

not
have
the
luxury
to
travel

the
conference.

be

project

people

able

that
recognition

only
looking
at
people

who

the
monetary
aspect
of
open-source
projects.

that
something
that

deterrent

women

join?

these
particular
jobs
less
stable,
potentially?
Are
these
careers
less
lucrative
or
are
or
not
as
safe?
Is
there
any
monetary
aspect
that
we
can
influence
within
our
companies?
It's
more
of
a
question
for
the
audience
and
for
the
panel.

was
a
there
was
a
initiative
that
started
a
while
ago
called
get
tip
dot,
org,
I'm,
gonna,
say
it
eventually
got
shut
down.
I
mean
the
idea
is
that
you
would
sponsor
a
project
whether
it's
25
cents
a
week
or
100
dollars
a
week,
and
then
you
get
anonymous
but
usually
marginalize
programmers
to
step
in
and
start
you
know
working
on
projects
and
they
get
paid
for
it
right
to
lemons
point.

It's
true
that
disproportionately
women
end
up
doing
more
domestic
work
or
you
know
caregivers,
and
they
don't
have
the
bandwidth
to
go
work
on
projects
where
you're
not
going
to
get
paid.
So
this
was
one
good
way
to
do
it,
but
for
various
reasons,
I
hope
that
I
won't
get
into
into
this
discussion
that
site
got
shut
down,
but
there
ton
for
others,
I
forget
the
name,
its
fund
project
or
something
like
that
again.
They've
raised
now
close
to
$300,000.

think

money

paying
people.
If
woman
is
not
the
breadwinner
in

house,
it
may
or
may
not
help
like
if
you're
not,
you

you're

wanting

household,

may
not
make
that
difference.

for
me
personally,

having

good
childcare

comfortable

hardest

picky

having

emotional
rewarding.

contributions

close

equal

superior

having

college
internship

student

community

encourage
the
companies
to
further
support
and
have
their

more
and
more
of
their
employees
contributed

problems

an
old
one

it's

declining

things,
we're
trying
to
do
is
be
more
inclusive,
get
more
people
involved.

said,
I've
been
involved
with
a
project
since
2003
I
took
it
over
in
January
and
I
kept
reading
up
to
16
or
17.

matter,
but
like
one
of
the
things
we
first
did,
is
we
make
things
more
visible
by
doing
poetry,
class
and
like
and
then
we'd
be
doing
the
livestream
stuff
that
helps
people
like
actually
identify
with
the
maintainer,
because,
like
most

time,
how
are
you
interacting
with
everybody?
It's
email
chat,
whatever
things
get
lost
in
communication,
all
that,
but
we're
like
we're
actually
talking
on
stream
or
like
live,
you
couldn't
be
like.

almost
a
hobby,
then

paid,
so
we
do
have
to
wrap
it
up.

we
want
to
just
ask
one
thing

when

start
looking
to
hire
people
for
an
open
source
project,
especially
I,
think
it's
important
to
look
at
people
who
are
already
contributing
massively
to
it
and
who
are
not
getting
recognized
and
at
least
in
any
monetary
sense
and
start
giving
them
the
first
chance
to
get
engaged
it.
