In this video, we show you how to assemble the Unlimbited Phoenix Hand, a popular e-NABLE hand design from Team Unlimbited (Drew Murray and Stephen Davies). This tutorial covers the thermo-forming process for the gauntlet/bracer and palm components, as well as the overall assembly process.

Today,
I'm
going
to
be
showing
you
how
to
assemble
the
unlimited
phoenix
hand.
The
device
I
have
here
was
printed
in
3d
universe,
pet
g,
which
is
available
in
a
variety
of
skin
tone.
Colors
pla
is
a
popular
choice
for
enabled
devices
and
it
works
fine,
but
pet
g
is
significantly
stronger
and
more
temperature
resistant,
so
devices
made
with
pet
g
will
hold
up
better.
Alright,
let's
get
started.

This
hand
was
printed
at
130
scale
using
our
3d
universe,
pet
g
material.
First,
we
have
our
palm.
Then
we
have
our
proximal
and
distal
finger
and
thumb
components.
Then
we
have
our
snap
pins
for
connecting
everything,
there's
a
helpful
image
on
the
thingieverse
page.
For
the
unlimited
phoenix
hand
that
shows
you
where
all
the
snap
bins
go.

This
piece
was
printed
flat.
It's
much
easier
to
print
this
way
and
the
direction
of
the
layering
will
make
it
much
stronger
in
the
end.
Here
we
have
our
tools.
We
have
a
set
of
wire
cutters,
two
different
types
of
needle
nose:
pliers,
a
screwdriver,
a
small
file,
a
pointy
dental
tool,
a
3d
printed
hammer
called
a
thwack,
a
sharpie
for
drawing
on
our
foam
a
lighter.
This
will
help
with
any
fraying
on
our
string
some
super
glue.

Now,
let's
take
a
minute
to
look
at
the
phoenix
kit
that's
offered
by
3d
universe.
We
have
several
different
kits
available.
There
will
be
a
link
down
below
you,
don't
need
to
purchase
one
of
these
kits,
but
it
does
make
it
a
lot
easier
to
put
one
of
these
hands
together.
The
kit
that
we'll
be
looking
at
today
will
work
with
the
phoenix
v2
hand,
the
unlimited
phoenix
hand,
the
phoenix
reborn
and
the
unlimited
arm.
If
you're,
making
the
unlimited
arm
design,
extra
velcro
will
be
needed
and
this
can
be
purchased
separately.

phoenix
kit
includes
all
the
items
that
you
see
here.
We
have
medical
grade,
firm,
foam,
padding,
we
have
the
tensioner
screws,
there
are
several
different
sizes.
We
have
palm
screws,
also
several
different
sizes.
However,
the
palm
screws
will
only
be
used
with
the
phoenix
v2
and
the
phoenix
reborn
hand.
We
have
two
different
types
of
dental
elastics.
These
will
be
used
for
the
finger
joints.

Next
we
have
gel
grip
fingertips.
These
go
on
the
ends
of
each
finger
to
provide
extra
grip.
There
are
10
included,
therefore,
you
will
have
extras.
We
have
two
velcro
straps
for
the
gauntlet
or
bracer,
and
finally,
we
have
two
different
types
of
cord:
a
flexible
and
non-flexible
cord.
The
flexible
cord
is
only
needed
for
the
phoenix
reborn
hand.
The
other
designs
will
use
the
dental
bands.

So
now
we
can
remove
this
from
our
jig
and
we're
ready
to
move
on
now
we're
going
to
go
ahead
and
thermal
form
the
base
of
the
palm
this
mesh
area.
We
want
to
pull
this
section
down,
giving
more
room
for
the
recipient's
hand
to
fit
into.
We
want
to
be
very
cautious
not
to
bend
the
wrist
thumb
or
finger
joints
while
doing
this.

All
right
here
we
are
we're
going
to
get
started
with
the
assembly
of
the
hand.
Now,
first,
I'm
going
to
go
ahead
and
do
the
fingers
and
the
thumb
now
you'll
notice
that
the
thumb
is
substantially
larger
than
the
fingers,
so
we're
going
to
start
with
this
piece.
First,
there
are
a
couple
of
things
to
note
when
assembling
the
fingers.
First,
there
is
a
rectangular
hole
and
a
circular
hole
on
the
joint
of
the
finger,
make
sure
that
you
put
the
pin
into
the
rectangular
hole,
otherwise
it
won't
fit
properly.

You
may
need
to
wiggle
the
finger
a
little
bit
just
to
get
it
past
that
connection
there.
We
go
now
it's
flat
on
both
sides,
so
we're
going
to
move
on
to
the
fingers
now
you'll
notice
that
the
two
middle
fingers
are
longer
and
the
outside
pinky
and
the
pointer
finger
are
a
little
bit
shorter.
That
makes
gripping
easier
for
the
recipient.

Now,
depending
on
the
quality
of
your
print,
you
may
need
to
wiggle
these
knuckle
pieces
around
a
little
bit
just
to
loosen
them.
You
should
be
able
to
do
this
and
let
it
wiggle
around
on
its
own.
If
it
doesn't
do
this,
then
go
ahead
and
just
work
it
back
and
forth
a
little
bit.
This
will
help
loosen
any
pieces
that
are
between
the
knuckle
and
make
it
move
freely.

Now
we're
going
to
put
the
dental
bands
on
the
finger
joints
and
the
knuckle
joints.
We
have
two
different
types
of
bands
here
we
have
a
quarter
inch
and
a
5
16
inch
band,
we're
going
to
test
each
one
on
different
fingers
and
see
which
one
is
more
appropriate
for
this
particular
size
hand.
Let's
start
with
a
quarter
inch.

Now
we're
going
to
go
ahead
and
attach
the
bracer
to
the
hand
using
the
two
snap
pins
and
the
caps.
Let's
get
started
we're
going
to
fit
the
bracer
into
the
hand
itself.
The
snap
pins
go
on
the
interior
of
the
hand.
You
can
see
that
there's
a
rectangular
opening
on
the
interior,
where
they
will
fit
in
so
just
push
these
in
by
hand.

Now
we're
going
to
go
ahead
and
attach
the
tensioner
block
and
pins
using
the
screws
that
are
provided
in
the
kit.
There
are
three
different
types
of
screws
in
here
or
sizes
of
screws:
make
sure
that
you
choose
the
right
one
if
it's
too
small
it'll
move
freely,
but
if
it's
too
large
it'll
split
your
plastic
part
we're
going
to
use
the
middle
size
for
this
print.

They
act
like
the
tendons
that
we
have
within
our
hand
and
fingers
we're
going
to
attach
the
cord
to
the
distal
part
of
the
finger
here
at
this
little
bar
run
it
through
the
proximal
part
of
the
finger
through
the
channel
up
through
the
top
of
the
palm
there's
a
channel
here
and
then
attached
to
the
pins
on
the
tensioner
block
on
the
thingyverse
page.
For
the
unlimited
phoenix
hand,
you
will
find
a
diagram
that
will
show
you
how
the
strings
need
to
be
run.

Now
we're
going
to
cut
three
pieces
of
string,
the
first
will
be
for
the
thumb
it'll
run
from
the
front
of
the
thumb
up
to
the
tensioner
block.
The
second
will
be
for
the
pointer
and
middle
finger.
It'll
run
from
the
beginning
of
the
pointer
finger
up
to
the
tensioner
block
and
back
down
to
the
middle
finger,
and
the
third
will
be
for
the
ring
and
pinky
finger
same
thing
will
apply.

Now
we're
going
to
start
the
stringing
process,
we're
going
to
start
by
tying
our
string
to
the
distal
part
of
the
finger
running
it
through
the
channel
in
the
proximal
part
of
the
finger
between
the
proximal
and
palm
in
this
little
channel
up
the
channel
in
the
hand,
and
it's
going
to
come
out
through
the
little
hole
here,
we're
going
to
run
it
through
our
tensioner
pin
back
down
the
same
way
to
the
front
of
the
ring
finger.
