Description
GitHub Codespaces [1] is a new VS Code based project that GitHub is currently rolling out as a limited beta and will then become a commercial product.
The client side of a codespace runs in the browser and the server side in a container and that’s how a Che workspace works too! Developers start a codespace clicking on a button of a GitHub repository and Che workspaces are started with a single click on a web link too!
Codespaces and Che may, at first glance, look like two applications that solve the same problem. But after a closer look their design and use case differ deeply as we will discuss in the webinar.

two

they

for
the

server,
the
java
extensions

you
can
use
the
same
exactly
extension
on
both
platform

on

codespaces
and
on
che,

you
will
have
the
same
result.
So
it
will
provide
you
good
completion
and
every

the
java
language
features
we'll
talk
about
that.
But,
of
course,
che
is
as
much
for
limited
support.

It
doesn't
have
the
the
latest
api
and
it
doesn't
have
access
to
the
marketplace
of
microsoft,
microsoft,
marketplace
after
extensions,
so
it's
it
supports
less
extensions,
but
we
are
and
implementing
so
in
tia.

implementing
the
vs
local
extension
api,

we

support
the

local
extensions.

fourth
thing
that
they
have

common
is
that
they
are
secure
development
environment
in
the
sense
that
the
source
code
and

developer
tools
never
have
to
transit
through
the
developer
laptop.

that
means
that
there
is
no
risk
to
actually
get

code
to
go
outside
from
then
from
the
cloud.
If
it's
in
the
cloud,
that's
not
in
the
in
the
laptop
and
cannot
be
get
lost
if
the
laptop
is
stolen
or
develop,
developments
don't
need
to
be
installed.

it
like
interesting
for
enterprises
that
want
to
have
secured
development
environment
both
of
them
exist
as
online
services.
So

github.dev,
you
will
have
access
to

spaces

che
there

by

hat,
and
that
is
workspaces
openshift.com.
There
are
other
online
instances
of

the
only
one
that
is

the

largest
one
with

the
latest
updates

github
codespaces
is

online
service.

online
service.

instances
for
it,
but
it's

an
open
source
project

you

deploy
on
premises
on

private
or
public
cloud
or
even
locally

can.

deploy
kubernetes
cluster,
you
will
be
able
to
deploy

a
blockchain

difference

difference
on

it

github
codespaces
is
using
a
fat
container,
so
a
workspace

one
container

all
the
tools

dependencies

vs4
extensions

have
your

extensions

all
these
services

running
in
the

we

service

container

ide
from

extensions

projects
today

docker
file
and
developers
are
more
and
more
demanding
for
being
able
to
use
docker.

they
want
to
have
docker
as
one
of
their
development
tools

able
to
build
a
container
and
even
run
it
for
testing
proposals
or
yeah
just
to
deploy
their

and
run
their
their
application.

feature

capability

access

automatically

codespaces

will

provisioned

codespace
development
environment.

have

defined
some
biases
or

functions,
etc
that
you
want
to
have
from
your
common
line.

it's

enterprise

the
fact

install

on-prem

enterprise
cloud
environments

a
powerful
workspace
scheduler.

development
environment

provisioned

type

node

your
cluster,
for
example,
nodes
that
have
a

acc
ssd
disk
so
that
your
compilation
will
be

faster

will
be
faster.

use
kubernetes
for

able
to
have
affinity
labels
that
will
make
sure
that
development
environments
will
be
scheduled
on
the
right

the
kubernetes
cluster.

cpu

disk,

development
environment
are

lot
of
resources

the
other
things

resources

in
kubernetes
and
then
in
che
as

to
specify
exactly

much
memory,

and
disk

available

development

type

charging

soon
as
it
will
be

generally

the

vm

azure
would
cost

core
and

gigabytes
