Maintainer Month is an opportunity for maintainers to gather and share knowledge and experiences. It’s a time to see how other projects are tackling similar problems. And it’s a time to reflect collectively that the challenges faced aren’t all technical, and the burden on maintainers can come with a lack of boundaries, vacations, or emotional support. Whether you’re celebrating contributions to open source, or reflecting on the particular pains of this line of labor, this is a month to come together.

Topic: Maintaining an Open Source Project
Marlene is a Zimbabwean software engineer, explorer, and speaker based in the city of Harare. She is a director and vice-chair for the Python Software Foundation and is currently working as a Developer Advocate at Voltron Data. In 2017, she co-founded ZimboPy, a non-profit organization that gives Zimbabwean young women access to resources in the field of technology. She is also the previous chair of PyCon Africa and is an advocate for women in tech on the continent.

back

science
and

focused
on
python
and

enjoyed
it

that
perspective.

throughout
that
process

part

the
open
source.
My
open
source
journey
was
just
speaking
at
conferences
and
going
to
conferences
and
participating
that
way
and
kind
of
learning
about
other
people's
projects,
and
then
I
started
building
some
projects
that,
like
I've,
archived
on
my
github,
but
actually
he
was
like
exactly
I
figured.

was
gonna,
be
speaking
as
well,
and
I
I
had
at
some
point
wanted
to
make
like
a
version
of
shocker
ui
like
I've.
I
wanted
to
like
create
something
similar
to
that
and
kind
of
was
working
on
my
own,
like
projects
by
myself

also
trying
to
get
different
people
to,

so
that's
kind
of
how
I
got
started
before.

then
got
hired
and
started
working
at
nvidia
at
the
time.

working
on
features
and

point

was
my
manager
that
kind

just

pushed
me
into
the
deep
end
and
was

now
start
doing

review
code
review,

just

being
part
of
the
discussion
in
terms

the
direction

design
or
choices,

good
for
the
coding
side

don't
know

I
would
have
ever

myself
