Presented by Kate Compton, Assistant Professor, Northwestern University
Dr Kate Compton (galaxykate) is a long-time generative artist, inventor, programmer, and new Assistant Professor of Instruction at Northwestern University. She wrote the first paper on procedural platform-game levels, generated the planets for the video game Spore, created the language Tracery which runs over 10000 community-made bots on Twitter, and invented an early phone-based AR system. Her mission is to design artificial intelligence to augment human creativity, and to create tools that brings AI into the hands of poets, artists, kids, and weirdos.

What is a virtuosic soloist in a new age and are they human? Reeps100 (AKA Reeps One) started competing with A.I. as a tournament chess player, now machine-learning and music-tech can be used to generate opponents, collaborators and mentors in many forms of expression. In this performance Reeps100 will be musically in conversation with a number of synthetic and sampled voices, of which he does not fully control. Blurring the lines between improvisation, composition and chess-like turn-based art.

Presented by Sam Aaron, Live Coder & Creator, Sonic Pi
Sonic Pi is a free, code-based music creation and performance tool for both students and professional musicians. It is possible for beginners to code fresh beats, driving bass lines and shimmering synth riffs—all while learning core computer science concepts, such as sequencing, functions, variables, loops, data structures, and algorithms. In this workshop, you'll learn how to use Sonic Pi to live code beats and riffs. You don't need to know how to either code or make music to get started, but by the end of this workshop you'll know enough about both to start your live coding journey.

Presented by Alexis André, Artist/Researcher, Sony Computer Science Laboratories, Inc.
Alexis André is an artist, researcher and designer aiming at redefining entertainment. In this golden age of computation and data overflow, why is our entertainment still designed to be consumed in a passive way? A few media are offering interactive experiences, but none of them are designed specifically for you. In this live demo, Alexis will create a sketch from scratch for participants to experience what it's like working with nannou and Rust.
