What is a virtuosic soloist in a new age and are they human? Reeps100 (AKA Reeps One) started competing with A.I. as a tournament chess player, now machine-learning and music-tech can be used to generate opponents, collaborators and mentors in many forms of expression. In this performance Reeps100 will be musically in conversation with a number of synthetic and sampled voices, of which he does not fully control. Blurring the lines between improvisation, composition and chess-like turn-based art.

I'm also known as roots 100, sometimes- and I'm here today, to showcase a new piece of my work. It's a performance and interaction that pushes me further. It makes me uncomfortable.

I call that discomfort and that testing an intelligent interruption before music. I actually came from tournament chess and my opponents were my greatest collaborators: the idea that to have ownership over that discomfort they're the ones that pushed me further. So sometimes it's not about harmony, it's about how our expertise and our skills can be forced into new corners and new places.

Today, I'm going to be interacting with a number of synthetic voices over the last four or five years, I've done a number of projects and worked with a number of tools that allow me to create audio and whether that's artificial intelligence and machine learning or just interesting processing.

This amazing bank of sounds normally sits static in my hard drive, where actually I've collaborated with databots to create a max patch.

This max patch allows me to interact with these different audios. It listens to me and I'm going to have four to five chess matches. With these different collected audio pieces. I have no control over what they do. It's a chaotic process, but the idea is, I will do unexpected things and it forces me to write and compose in a new way. So, for example, if I was to.

Make what you have there is a reply, so the reply you just heard was from audio created with dada bots using sample rnn, a generative version of myself hours and hours and hours of performance used as a data set to create hundreds of hours of patterns and phrases that I'd never done before.

But now I can speak with that audio, so this gauntlet that I'm about to walk through these number of interactions are all about how we can question expertise and we can question our human fundamentals to become something more academically artistically and, most importantly, as an opportunity to push the very idea of what it means to be an expert.
