A
A
I'm
Toby
I
work
as
a
design
engineer
at
GitHub
and
I
have
two
very
exciting
announcements
today
before
that,
though,
I
want
to
talk
about
this
tiny
Duo,
they
act
as
characters,
usually
in
the
background
when
we
communicate
at
GitHub
in
most
contexts
be
through
the
GitHub
Mark,
in
the
edge
of
your
screen
when
you're
using
GitHub
or
around
it
somewhere.
Sometimes
they
act
as
protagonists
in
the
universe
and
explore
our
products
and
themselves,
and
they
are
an
adventurous
and
expressive
Duo.
A
They
are
usually
background
characters,
but
today,
just
for
this
presentation,
they
will
be
the
protagonists
now,
usually
when
we
communicate
at
GitHub.
Of
course,
everything
that
we
communicate
is
usually
done
through
typography,
be
through
our
home
page,
our
product
pages
or
when
we
tell
Community
stories
through
the
readme
project,
whatever
we
do
type
is
everywhere.
That
type
needs
to
be
clear
expressive
so
that
we
can
communicate
things
Beyond,
just
the
words
that
we're
putting
on
the
page,
but
also
especially
on
the
web
performance.
Now
today
to
help
you
solve
for
that
problem
space.
A
We
are
introducing
two
new
open
source
projects
from
GitHub.
The
first
one
is
monosance
monoscience
is
a
strong
and
versatile
typeface,
designed
with
daggerism
a
type
Foundry
and
inspired
by
industrial
era
grotesques.
She
works
super
well
across
product
web
and
print
she's,
the
main
typeface
that
we
use
throughout
GitHub.
This
entire
presentation
is
mostly
set
in
Mona
Sans
and
also,
for
example,
when
we
communicate
at
Universe.
She
works
really
well
in
body
in
UI
and,
of
course,
in
headers
too.
The
second
project
that
we're
announcing
today
is
Hubert
SATs.
A
She
was
science
is
Mona's
sidekick,
with
a
more
geometric
accent
for
Technical
and
distinctive,
feel
perfect
for
headers
and
pull
quotes.
Science
is
inspired
by
monophons,
it's
not
a
monophons,
but
if
you're
talking
about
code
or
technical
Concepts
keyboard,
science
is
great
for
getting
that
type
of
feel
yet
remaining
very
legible
and
readable.
A
Now
both
of
these
fonts
come
in
a
variety
of
variants.
Monosense
and
human
Sans
come
as
a
thin
variant,
specially
great
for
when
you're
designing
something
large
but
still
want
to
maintain
a
light
feel,
and
they
go
all
the
way
up
to
Black
and
they
can
be
with
you
through
thick
and
thin
and
everything
in
between
to
communicate
well
across
all
your
contexts.
A
They
also
both
come
in
a
narrow
variant
and
especially
great
when
you
have
less
space
or
want
to
communicate
with
a
different
type
of
feeling,
and
they
go
all
the
way
up
to
wide
great
for
making
a
larger
impact,
and,
together
with
all
of
these
variants,
you
can
use
Mona
and
hubot
in
a
variety
of
contexts
and
communicate
different
liquid
fields
and
really
let
them
do
the
heavy
work.
So
you
can
focus
on
what
you
want
to
communicate
now,
both
of
these
fonts
monosanci
cubot
cents
are
variable
fonts.
A
That
means
that
you're
not
limited
to
the
variants
that
I've
shown
you,
but
you
can
pick
any
variant
in
between.
So
you
have
a
variable
weight
and
a
variable
width.
Verbal
fonts
is
a
technology
that
enables
you
to
have
different
variations
of
typeface
to
be
incorporated
into
one
single
file,
so
this
was
standardized
in
2016
and
is
now
supported
by
all
major
browsers.
A
So
let's
just
take
a
minute
to
think
about
how
that
works
and
why
this
was
specked.
If
you
want
to
draw
an
A
just
letter
a
and
then
you
want
to
have
that
in
different
variations,
so
you
add
on
different
thicknesses
and
go
all
the
way
up
to
bold
and
black,
and
then
you
want
to
go
thinner
as
well.
You
end
up
drawing
a
lot
of
Ace
and
you
ship
all
of
these
A's
to
customers,
and
you
have
a
lot
of
different
font
files.
A
Add
to
that
then
that
you
also
want
maybe
a
narrow
typeface,
and
then
you
also
want
a
wide
typeface.
Suddenly,
you
have
24
different
in
this
instance
Ace
that
you've
drawn
with
Vector
points,
but
even
though
there
are
vector
points,
they
take
up
space
and
it
adds
up,
and
then
you
do
this
for
every
single
letter,
uppercase
and
lowercase
variant.
A
It
just
takes
up
a
lot
of
space,
and
even
when
you
do
this,
you're
limited
to
just
these
variants
that
I'm
showing
on
the
screen
with
variable
fonts
we
we
can
instead
just
draw
the
end
points
in
this
Matrix.
So
it's
a
bit
simplified.
But
basically,
what
we're
doing
is
we're
drawing
just
the
endpoints
here
and
then
we
can
interpolate
in
between
all
of
these.
So
you
can
pick
exactly
the
variant
that
you
want
and
that
lets
you
pinpoint
exactly
the
weight
that
you
want.
So
basically,
what
you
get
is
one
file
with
infinite
possibilities.
A
Getting
started
is
fairly
easy.
You
can
declare
an
actual
a
font
face
and
name
it
monosense.
You
then
load
the
font
file
and
then
you
have
to
Define
how
you
can
use
those
variations
that
we
enable
you
to
so.
In
this
instance,
you
have
to
set
font
weight
goes
from
200
to
900
and
then
font
stretch
which
is
narrow
or
wide.
It
goes
from
75
to
125..
A
Then
you
can
use
that,
like
any
other
font,
so
you
can
set
font
family,
Lona
sense
and
then,
for
example,
on
headers
you
can
set
font
weight,
800
and
font
stretch
125
for
a
very
wide
and
impactful
header.
Now
this
is
the
cool
thing.
You
can,
of
course,
set
this
to
any
number
that
you
want.
It
doesn't
have
to
be
an
even
number,
so
if
you
really
like
Mona
science
or
hubot
Sans
at
font,
weight,
835
and
font
stretch
119
1.25.
A
You
can
of
course
use
that
too,
and
this
is
a
great
and
powerful
feature
of
variable
fonts.
You
can
tweak
them
exactly.
However,
you
want-
and
you
can
also
do
that
in
a
single
instance,
for
example,
here
in
this
poster
the
word
Mona
and
shubat
line
up
perfectly,
even
though
naturally,
the
word
Mona
and
Cuba
doesn't
align
vertically.
So
we're
just
stretching
the
word
Mona
here,
just
a
little
bit,
so
that
its
width
is
exactly
the
same
as
that
of
hubot.
So
we
can
get
this
movie
ask
poster,
look
and
feel
for
this
poster.
A
You
can
also
use
which
we
recommend
subsetting
to
reduce
font
sizes
and
ship.
Let's
less
buys
to
the
customer,
you
can
use
a
tool
like
glyphanger
bisect
Leatherman,
to
remove
the
characters
that
you
don't
want
or
don't
use
your
specific
project
and
then
the
bundle
of
course
shrinks
and
that
font
file
will
load
faster,
so
encourage
you
to
explore
that
and
do
that
too,
and
we
do
that
at
GitHub.
Now
we
believe
that
the
announcement
of
this
is
the
start
of
another
iterative.
A
Journey,
like
this
is
the
start
of
an
investment,
so
the
funds
are
great,
but
we
think
they
can
be
better
and
we
think
fonts
in
general
can
be
better
and
if
we
look
back
to
Mona,
Sans
or
rather
Mona
and
how
that
story
started,
it
started
by
us
actually
purchasing
a
stock
illustration
and
we
used
it
on
four
or
four
pages
and
500
pages
and
stuff
like
this.
But
then
she
grew
into
our
brand.
