In 2014, the Heartbleed Bug sent shockwaves across the internet and led to news headlines like: “The Internet Is Being Protected By Two Guys Named Steve.” Although this headline is somewhat humorous, it revealed a crucial vulnerability of free and open source software (FOSS) altogether: oftentimes, important open source software is maintained by a few engaged—but tired and overworked—individuals. Let’s explore why sponsoring is a great way to drive FOSS forward altogether, how it can be done in practice, and what the experience of open source sponsorship is at Mercedes-Benz. In particular, Dr. Gehring will also discuss how to overcome challenges in implementing such a sponsorship program at the corporate level.

Even though open source has been so transformative, it’s still only a little over 20 years old, and there are still many unsolved problems with building, scaling, and funding open source communities. Airbyte is disrupting the previously tightly controlled data integration industry by building—and paying—the largest community of data connectors in the world. If you're a founder or someone looking to get paid to contribute to open source with GitHub Sponsors, this session will give you some highlights of working with React, Svelte, Temporal, and Airbyte in just 5 minutes.

Building a new open source community can be challenging, especially when it involves cutting-edge tech like quantum computers. Building on the traditional LLVM-based technology stack, the QIR Alliance creates tools and specifications to enhance popular developer tools, from Python to C++, with access to quantum accelerators. This session will share how Codespaces can reduce barriers to development and encourage community building, so everyone can contribute to the development of quantum computing.

In this session, Aaron willl talk about how the act of pressing “publish” can increase the odds of luck in finding you. Publishing your work can take various forms—whether that's releasing open source code, creating a podcast, starting a newsletter, or something else altogether! By doing work and being public about it, you build a reputation for yourself. You build a public body of work that speaks on your behalf better than any resume ever could. As your teams grow, so does your collective knowledge of all that you've built together. Managing and documenting that knowledge can be daunting, but it's so important for remembering decisions, creating new ideas without reinventing the wheel, and bringing new teammates up to speed. In this talk, Cassidy will discuss strategies for taking (and finding!) notes as a team.

From diagnosing, treating, and preventing illnesses to helping us improve the health of our planet, open source is powering the world. But to keep its impact scalable and sustainable, we need an ecosystem that supports the millions of developers we rely on. In the case of open source, to empower one, means powering many. Diversifying who gets to be a developer has its natural benefits, but GitHub is interested in taking this one step further to define who gets to be a career developer.
