From YouTube: GitLab CEO Shadow Update - May 30, 2019
Description
An update from GitLab's CEO Shadow (and Evangelist Program Manager) on what he's learned while shadowing the CEO.
A
Hey:
what's
up
I'm
John
Coghlan
I'm,
the
current
CEO
shadow
for
gitlab,
normally
our
Vangelis
program
manager
on
the
community
relations
team,
but
for
this
week
and
next
week,
I'm
shadowing
our
CEO
Syd.
So
what
does
shadowy
mean?
I've
been
going
to
his
meetings,
I've
been
attending
at
events
and
dinners
and
just
doing
everything
that
he
does
as
a
CEO.
A
The
hope
is
that
myself
and
other
shadows
will
get
a
better
sense
of
what's
going
on
across
the
organization,
how
Syd
works
with
history
axe
and
also
give
Sidda
chance
to
develop
relationships
with
new
folks
to
who
will
then
be
able
to
give
him
feedback
or
feel
more
comfortable,
giving
him
feedback
and
challenging
him.
It's
a
really
interesting
program,
super
transparent.
You
don't
even
need
to
be
a
git
lab
team
member
to
participate,
and
but
the
one
disclaimer
is
at
the
bars
become
really
high.
A
Given
the
interest
in
the
program,
I
would
no
longer
be
eligible.
Given
the
new
eligibility
requirements,
I
was
lucky
to
kind
of
be
aggressive
in
taking
on
the
opportunity
when
it
presents
itself.
But
if
you
are
interested
in
applying
check
out
our
handbook,
there's
more
information
there,
so
I
wanted
to
just
call
attention
to
three
things:
I've
learned
over
the
first
three
days.
The
first
one
is
our
values.
A
This
was
something
brought
up
by
Erica,
who
was
the
first
CEO
shadow
props
to
Erica,
for
you
know
taking
that
brave
first
step,
but
she
also
mentioned
the
values
in
the
video
that
she
did
about.
Shadowing
said
not
surprisingly,
they
come
up
in
almost
every
meeting
that
sits
in
whether
it's
with
his
exec
team,
with
a
journalist
with
someone
from
outside
the
company
who's
interested
in
learning.
What's
going
on
or
potentially
interviewing
for
a
position,
the
values
are
everywhere
and
I.
A
A
The
values
come
up
a
lot.
The
old
remote
culture
comes
up
almost
as
frequently
everyone
wants
to
know
how
it's
working.
How
do
we
make
it
work?
You
know
and
I
think
that
the
lasting
impact
of
gitlab
might
just
be
changing
the
world
in
showing
how
you
can
be
successful
as
a
small
remote
company
and
if
we're
able
to
kind
of
shift
that
mindset
and
encourage
more
and
more
companies
to
pursue
the
all
remote
kind
of
vision
that
we've
made
work.
A
I
think
that
the
economic
outcomes
for
people
all
around
the
world
are
gonna
be
much
greater
than
the
outcomes
that
get
lab
delivers.
As
a
you
know,
product
for
software
engineers,
so
those
are
three
of
the
things
I've
been
thinking
a
lot
about
and
I'll
be
back
with
more
insights
throughout
the
next
couple
of
weeks.
So
stay
tuned.
