Hello everyone.: this is haris delalić and I am the product manager for the.

A

Import group here at gitlab. today, I'm going to test drive a new feature.

A

That allows me to migrate a gitlab group from one instance of gitlab to another.

A

This is the group that I have created for this purpose.

A

It has a subgroup and a project associated with it.

A

Gitlab migration currently moves only groups and subgroups. projects are an upcoming development..

A

So, to start the migration,, I will create a new group.

A

On the target instance and, instead of creating a blank new group,, I will import a group.

A

So, for importing groups,, we now have a new choice here at the top,. In addition to.

A

Being able to import from the file., this import choice will migrate. The group directly from the.

A

Other instance, without having to export it into a file and then re-import that file.

A

So, to start, we'll have to select the url from which we're pulling the group.

A

From and also a personal access token from that instance. once the token is provided,.

A

We can connect to that instance and see all the groups that are available for us to migrate.

A

So, all the groups on the left are the ones that I can migrate into this instance., as you can tell,.

A

The bottom two have already been imported, and that is indicated by the status of complete.

A

If you have a lot of groups that you're working with,, there are ways for you to use.

A

This view to narrow your choices, down., you can filter. For the name of the group.-.

A

I will type in 'migration' and only see the two groups that have 'migration' in the name.

A

Or if you just have a lot of groups- and you want to see all of them at once,, you're, actually able.

A

On this page to select to display 50 or 100 items per page,, in addition to the default 20.

A

So,, let's take a look at this particular group here,, which is the one that I wanted to migrate.

A

So,, the 'hdelalic-migration-source' is the group that I want to migrate.. I can either.

A

Select this checkbox and hit 'import selected', or I can use the import button on this line.

A

As you can tell, this user experience allows you to select all of the available groups to.

A

Be imported at once, or just select the few that you need and import those all together.

A

In addition to being able to migrate into the exact group, name,.

A

We can also edit the group name and choose a different target. Name. so,. I can rename.

A

This group during migration., I can also migrate the group into a top-level group that I have.

A

Here called 'a-group-for-migration-testing',, or I can select any other group that I have access to,.

A

Or even select the 'no parent' option, which means that this group will have no parent.

A

In the target, instance,, meaning that this will be a top-level group,, not a subgroup.

A

So, now that I have selected my options,, I will go ahead and start the import.

A

The page provides a status for the import while it's running. the status will check.

A

For the creation of the groups and will change and to 'complete'.

A

When the groups have been fully migrated.

A

So,, while the import is running,, let me mention that the group that I expect to have migrated.

A

Is this 'hdelalic-migration-source'.? I expect it to be migrated into a.

A

Group called 'hdelalic-migration-target' and I do expect to see there the subgroup that's.

A

In this group,, but at this time the project that belongs to that subgroup will not be migrated.

A

So,, my migration has been completed and I can navigate to the.

A

Group that has been created for me.

A

So,, if I take a look at this group,, I will see that it has a subgroup with the same name as.

A

The original. however, there is no project there,, which is as expected. that said, we can still use.

A

The project export-import to move our projects now into the group structure that we've created. so,.

A

This group structure is there. all the groups have been migrated, all of the settings and group.

A

Information have been added., the projects can be migrated manually, one project file at a time.

A

So, just now to compare what we have here,.

A

Let's take a look at the labels. so, for example, in my original group,.

A

I had a label,, an orange label created and named it 'group', and I can.

A

See now that my target group also has that label created.

A

So, now to complete the migration of the project,, we need to go to the.

A

Actual project in the source, to settings, and create an export.

A

Under 'advanced' there is a project export option., generating an export will create a file that.

A

You can download. I've done that just a little earlier and I have already downloaded my export,.

A

So what I'll do now is, I will import that project file into my new.

A

Group that I've created. so,, I will open the subgroup,. I will create a new project,.

A

And in here I will select to import the project from a gitlab export.

A

I will choose the file.

A

And give this project a name.

A

This kicks off an import which shouldn't take long, because this is a fairly small project.

A

Once this is completed,, we'll be able to compare the original.

A

A

That contained,, that has the top-level group,, the subgroup, and the project to the new structure.

A

That was created using the group migration and the project import that has the same.

A

Structure,, which is the top-level group,, the subgroup,.

A

And the project. and,, if you take a look at the project itself,.

A

And compare it,: you can see that we have seven commits, two branches,.

A

An open, issue,, an open, merge, request, some closed issues, and closed, merge, requests.

A

And,, comparing that to the original,, we'll see that we have the same structure, there,.

A

Including this one open issue that has the label 'group'., this label is a group label,, so.

A

It was migrated as part of the group migration,, but then once the project was imported,.

A

The group label was applied to it.

A

So, group migration is a complete replacement for the group, export and import.

A

Process., it makes it a lot easier to do this, because it's a one-click, single-step action that.

A

You need to take in order to migrate your entire top group, with all of the subgroups included.

A

And then, once we have the ability to migrate the projects under that as well,.

A

You will no longer need to export the project file and import it.

A

It will just be done automatically for you when you migrate. The group.

A
