From YouTube: Debug why a video doesn't show on the handbook

I was asked to figure out why a video didn't show correctly on the handbook page. I figured recording the debugging process was a good move.

Hey, I was asked about um a video on the handbook page that didn't show properly and if I could have a look and maybe fix it, and I thought it would be better that I do this while also sharing okay. So let's go ahead.

Okay, so uh that's the youtube video on this page. As you can see, it says that it's blocked, um so the first idea I have is to open the web id and go check out the video or how it's added to the page- and I think it's this one here, and so what I notice is that the video is added, but not with an embed link. So if I copy.

The url, so we can just open it on youtube.

So here we have it. I think this is the video that needs to be shared. um What you need to do to share a video on another webpage. Is you have to embed it and to do that? You click the share button here and then there's several options you can have, but we don't want any of the social media.

We just want to embed it, and so the nice thing is, then you get a little uh blurp with the right code that we can use in the handbook and to know if you have the right url here you see youtube.comwatch and then the id and then even a feature, but it doesn't see anywhere embed. So that's what we want and that's how I noticed this is not the right video.

There are some other neat things you can do is you can have maybe the first 10 seconds or the first two minutes where everybody chatting a little bit and saying hi, you could have it start later, but in this case I will just um copy the text as is and assume that it's what we want and then what I will do is um edit here.

Okay um in this figure classes video container- that's perfect! That's how we embed uh videos and, let's see, if I can comment this yes and we're gonna- see the change um use a net url for.

Look, I'm gonna add it to a new branch. um Oh maybe first, let's see if um no, I want to get this. uh If I can, I don't know if videos can be previewed, but I can have a quick look to see if that's possible, it doesn't look like it. I actually don't forgot where it was. It's super commission rate.

With market commission, it's super good. No, so that's the sad thing about this preview is that we cannot see if it works or not. um Let's commit it change limits of committing um and let's see what happens, um because once we have a merch request, we can wait for the pr the review app to build.

um So let me let me first already submit it so the pipelines start.

Pipelines will be to create the review app and then we'll be able to see if it worked or not. In the meantime, I will fill in the mr. So let's see, why is this chain being made.

Was um to add a video to the handbook, we need to embed.

Url and let's see if somewhere in the handbook, we talk about that there is another video how to do it or maybe not markdown guide yep.

This play videos from youtube here. It also send us a link to this, so we have it so it says copy the goods will so you copy this um go to the video url. You want. Click then share, then embed and then copy the iframe source url only this is like. If you only want to change this, um you can also just copy the whole iframe stuff. I think that shouldn't matter unless um youtube adds some stuff that we block but we'll see, um can also be.

Handbook and then I provided a title, let's see if the changes and now we have to wait a bit until all these um things are done.

So what I will do is.

I'll stop sharing, and I will okay so we're back, and um we see that all the pipelines have run and are passed and because of that, we now also have access to this view app button. What this does is um we can go and see a version of our changes within the whole handbook with the styling and everything.

um So that's a little different than the preview you can see when you're in the web ide, because then you just see the markdown file formatted. But here you see, you see it really uh nicely um with all the kidnap styling within the headers and everything, and so now we see that the video does load, although my cookie setting to prevent it from really being shown.

But at least you know it's no longer that um not allowed, or I forgot what it did say um so for me we could say this, mr, is good to go. um I will, however, not merge it, because it's my mr, I will assign it to the right person and let them merge it, but that's it. So what we did is um we made a change to use the embed url instead of the um yeah. The full youtube link so that the the youtube video can be shown in the handbook.
