From YouTube: TeamOps, Asynchronous Communication, and Inclusion
Description
As part of the Shared Reality guiding principle of TeamOps, we highlight the need for asynchronous communication. Here is why I think that is so important for Inclusion!

A
Hey
I'm
Matt
back
in
engineering
manager
here
at
gitlab,
I've
been
working
here
for
about
three
and
a
half
years,
and
one
of
the
things
I
really
like
about
the
way
we
work
is
the
idea
of
asynchronous
communication.
A
We
use
it
every
day
at
gitlab
and
is
one
of
the
foundations
of
Team
Ops,
which
is
how
we
work.
We
even
have
it
in
our
handbook
as
part
of
our
values,
asynchronous
communication
lets
team
members
participate
in
conversations,
get
updates,
share
information
and
deliver
results,
and
it
doesn't
matter
where
or
when
you're
working.
This
means
you
don't
have
to
be
in
a
meeting
to
get
information,
and
it
really
helps
everyone
contribute
which
is
our
mission
at
gitlab.
A
A
In
the
past
few
years.
There
was
a
study
that
showed
companies
with
more
gender
and
racially
diverse.
Executive
teams
are
actually
more
profitable,
and
then
there
was
this
other
study
that
showed
more
cognitively
diverse
groups.
Can
actually
solve
problems
faster,
asynchronous
communication
Works
to
get
more
people
involved
by
allowing
people
to
contribute
at
their
own
time,
which
is
it
just
leads
to
better
decisions.
A
People
work
in
so
many
unique
ways.
For
example,
some
people
are
great
at
coming
up
with
ideas
on
the
spot.
Others,
like
me,
need
a
little
more
time
to
think.
First,
some
are
extroverts,
some
are
introverts,
but
we
need
all
of
these
people
to
contribute,
and
by
using
asynchronous
communication,
we
really
invite
that
that
collaboration
and
invite
everyone
to
contribute.
A
One
other
thing
I've
seen
is
that
it
can
be
slightly
easier
for
your
unconscious
bias
to
creep
in.
When
you
are
using
mainly
synchronous
communication,
it
seems
to
be
a
little
better
with
asynchronous
there's
the
things
like
Authority
bias,
where
you
can
be
influenced
by
authority
figures
or
Conformity
bias,
where
you
can
kind
of
want
to
fit
in
with
the
group
or
other
unconscious
bias
towards
gender,
race
and
age
that
can
creep
up
now.
A
Now
asynchronous
communication
isn't
going
to
fix
these
problems,
but
it
gives
people
a
chance
to
slow
down
and
think
which
helps
a
little
bit,
at
least
because
of
all
this
I
think
it
can
really
help
teams
of
all
kinds
if
you're,
geographically
diverse,
like
git
lab
or
just
sitting
right
next
to
each
other
I
think
just
just
asynchronous.
Communication
is
a
great
way
to
work.
