Beyond the Hype. We hope to help break the notion that there is not any good real-world example of Blockchain utilization outside of finance and combat they myth of extreme cost and technicality difficulty. The Integra Ledger, a Blockchain for the legal industry, utilizes Hyperledger Fabric and Composer to deliver a live consortium controlled Blockchain backed by members including IBM, AIG, Net Documents, Orrick, Perkins Cooie, and Liberty Mutual.
While Smart contracts are interesting The Integra Ledger focuses on other critical utility services such as Universal Identity, Proof of Existence and PGP public key distribution.
Membership in the consortium requires producing a proof of concept and we will present some real-world use cases that members have produced.

I'm,
the
CTO
of
Integra,
Ledger
and
I'm
here
to
talk
about
demo
of
a
real-world
blockchain
that
we
stood
up
in
hyper
electric
composer
and
fabric
under
the
auspices
of
the
global
legal
blockchain
consortium,
which
I
will
explain
what
that
is.
I
live
in
Las
Vegas,
where
what
happens
on
the
blockchain
stays
on
the
blockchain,
so
we're
a
blockchain
for
law-
and
you
know
everything
in
the
world
has
a
legal
context.
Certainly
everything
involved
in
business.
A
So
if
you
just
consider
documents
alone,
there
are
a
lot
of
documents
created
and
currently
the
state
of
law
firms
and
legal
departments.
It's
a
chaotic
hell
right
now
and
if
you're
curious
about
what
a
specific
pain
point
that
you
have
is
you
I
found
it
staggering
that
nine
out
of
ten
lawyers
sent
on
password-protected
PDFs
over
unencrypted
email?
It's
not
that
there
aren't
good
systems
out
there.
They're
too
many
there's,
actually
there's
actually
kind
of
a
lock
of
a
fewer
vendor
lock-in
and
there's
no
central
agreed-upon
system
for
data.
A
So
an
even
bigger
problem
is
the
legal
industry
is
incredibly
technically
backward.
I
would
actually
call
them
law
dates,
but
not
to
their
faces.
Another
problem
is
that
lawyers
are
in
general,
financially
disincentivize
to
make
things
better.
It's
really
hard
to
go
into
a
room
of
lawyers
who
are
all
making
tens
of
millions
of
dollars
and
tell
them
they're
doing
things
wrong.

There
are
also
some
weird
problems
where
law
firms
are
formed.
As
these
limited
limited
partnerships
and
the
tech
budget
comes
out
of
their
pockets,
so
you
know
you
can
talk
about
blockchain,
helping
down
the
line
rather
by
a
yacht
and
they'll
be
retired
by
the
time
it
actually
helps.
So
that's
kind
of
a
big
challenge.
Lawyers,
don't
trust
so,
if
you've
been
listening
to
blockchain

law,
if
you've
been
listening
to
a
lot
of
the
talks,
you'll
hear
a
lot
about
it's
all
about
trust.

So
it
I
thought
that
when
we
set
out
to
do
a
blockchain
for
law,
we'd
be
writing
a
lot
of
code.
You
know:
I
I
was
naive
when
I
heard
smart
contracts
and
and
contracts
contracts
and
laws
code
that
there
would
be
a
lot
of
code
turns
out
that
getting
adoption
of
a
blockchain
has
been
95
percent
a
social
problem.
So
we
have
five
people
traveling
the
world
right
now
like
myself,
and
we
spend
more
time
talking
about
code.

As
a
matter
of
fact,
if
I
threw
a
rock
out
in
this
room
hit
a
developer,
they
could
probably
even
if
they've,
never
used
fabric
and
composure
built
our
entire
infrastructure,
at
least
the
blockchain
part
in
a
day
or
two.
It's
really
about
leveraging
the
existing
technology,
so
I'm
lazy,
so
I
I
decided
to
leverage
the
existing
tech.
That's
out
there.
We
got
fabric
I,
love
Composer.

We
spent
so
much
of
our
time
answering
why
not
aetherium
and
I
think
one
of
the
biggest
problems
that
isn't
being
talked
about
here
is
untangling
the
mess
that
in
the
real
world,
just
you
know,
people
don't
get
that
iBM
is
not
high,
lecher
and
hyper
ledger.
You
know,
IBM
I've
had
my
issues
with
IBM
and
I
think
that
IBM
in
hyper
ledger
point
their
fingers
at
each
other
when
things
are
going
wrong
and
it
leaves
the
real-world
users
just
confused.

so
much
of
this
is
about
education
and
some
of
its
social
engineering
in
some
ways
we're
pushing
people
in
the
right
direction
and
the
real
key
I
decided
was
to
make
things
super
easier
for
the
developer.
So
as
a
matter
of
fact,
I,
sometimes
when
I
talk
about
blockchain
like
to
not
use
the
word
blockchain,
so
we've
composer
gives
you
a
restful
api
on
top
of
everything.
They
don't
need
to
know
that
it's
blockchain,
you
don't
have
to
answer.
The
question,
isn't
block
changes
too
bad
database
and
I'm
like
well
yeah.

So
the
main
thing
that
was
apparent-
oh
we
got
this.
This
wasn't
a
surprise,
is
that
no
one
was
going
to
trust
a
little
startup.
No
one
startup
like
ourselves,
so
the
main
thing
we
needed
to
do
was
build
a
root
of
trust,
a
consortium
and
we
started
on
quorum,
which
was
the
nightmare.
So
we
moved
over
to
hyper
ledger
when
it
was
in
point
six
and
realized
that
our
secret
sauce
was
going
to
be
to
create
a
consortium
that
set
standards
for
blockchain
and
law,
and
it
was
a
we
envisioned.

He
was
at
an
early
meeting
of
my
company
and
I'd
met
some
of
the
sovereign
folks.
You
know
I'd
like
to
formally
invite
them
and
I've
been
talking
with
them,
so
our
goal
is
to
bring
them
in
and
help
set
some
of
the
standards
and
we've
done
that
in
other
areas
like
brought
in
accord.
Who
is
one
of
two
groups
who
are
really
doing
trying
to
formalize
a
mechanism
for
for
some
more
contracts
on
the
ledger?
A
So,
as
I
said,
we
want
to
really
focus
on
building
a
utility
infrastructure.
We
don't
want
to
write
smart
contract
code
or
version
management.
We
want
the
existing
players
to
integrate
it
into
their
system,
so
keep
things
brutally
simple
lower.
The
friction
have
third
party
software,
so
I
mentioned
the
consortium.
No
one
really
took
us
seriously
when
we
were
ten
members,
when
we
were
twenty,
we
just
hit
a
hundred
sixty
and
you
know,
I
feel
bad
for
you.

If
you
recognize
all
of
the
law
firm
names,
because
it
means
you're
paying
too
much
in
legal
fees,
but
we
have
you
know
with
people
like
IBM
and
Walter
clew
errs
and
net
documents
up
in
the
upper
left,
they've
done
the
most
integration
they
do
about
30
percent
of
document
management
and
legal
and
think
about
it.
I
manage
does
about
65
and
we've
been
speaking
with
them
between
the
two
of
them.
It
will
be
most
of
the
world's
legal
documents.

So,
for
example,
when
net
documents
is
they
plan
on
encrypting
email
with
the
system,
the
global
legal
blockchain
consortium
acts
as
the
root
of
trust.
They
would
approve
net
documents,
a
major
known
company
to
issue
keys.
They
issue
keys
to
themselves.
You
can
trace
the
root
of
keys
out
and
the
the
blockchain
becomes
a
public
key
registry
that
you
know
the
law
firms
are
so
paranoid,
they're,
worried
about
men
and
the
middle
look-ups.

They
don't
understand
that
you
can
really
secure
an
HTTPS
look
up
to
the
MIT
key
server,
but
it
makes
them
feel
better,
so
think
about
it.
The
public
key
registry
is
safer
because,
if
they
are
running
in,
oh
did
sink
behind
their
firewall
and
then
number
one
and
to
have
really
kind
of
merged.
We
have
a
common
identity
system,
so
everything
in
law
has
a
matter
associated
with
it.
It
basically
matters
have
ID.
So
if
you
and
I
entered
into
a
contract,
my
law
firm
uses
rocket
matter.

Yours
uses
Clio,
which
are
two
of
the
bigger
systems
that
a
midsize
law
firm
is
likely
to
use
the
amount
of
time
you're
spending
$450
an
hour,
and
that's
that's
on
the
low
side
to
match
up
documents
when,
because
each
have
their
own
ID
for
the
matter,
it's
crazy.
If
they
call
Integra
ledger
and
get
a
comment
for
inclusive
service,
I
call
it
a
foreign,
a
comment
ID.
If
they
simply
use
that
ID
forget
fancy,
blockchain,
stuff
and
I
know
you
don't
need
the
blockchain
for
it,
but
you
know
it
helps.

The
other
thing
is
proof
of
existence.
So
if
you
do
signed
hashes-
or
you
know
some
fancier
stuff
with
zero
knowledge
proof,
but
basically
you're
putting
hashes
of
data
on
to
the
ledger,
and
the
court
system
is
already
beginning
to
accept
this
Vermont
in
the
United
States
will
now
accept
blockchain
record
of
data
as
long
as
a
human
expert
confirms
that,
yes,
this
really
is
illegible,
so
in
other
words
half
the
audience
in
this
room
would
be
accepted
in
Vermont
to
say
sure
that
that
blockchain
record
looks
good.

So
this
is
kind
of
what
the
world
looks
like.
If
you
have
the
common
ID
system-
and
you
know
we
kind
of
hope-
to
tie
the
world
together
using
the
blockchain-
and
you
know
if
you're
well-
I
normally
throw
out
there
if
you're
a
blockchain
purist
leave
the
room
grow
up.
You
know
you
need
some
sort
of
central
authority,
but
you
know
for
this
audience.
I
really
don't
need
to
push
that
point.

The
economics,
so
we
were
talking
with
Thomson
Reuters,
who
is
one
of
the
biggest
providers
of
legal
tech
stuff
and
putting
hashes
of
documents
is
a
common
use
case.
So
they
internally
were
playing
with
it
on
on
aetherium
and
I'm,
quoting
them
because
I
think
they
they
got
the
numbers
a
little
bit
wrong.
They
were
saying
it
costs
about
fifteen
cents,
a
transaction
on
average
and
about
thirty
minutes
to
commit
that
seemed
a
little
bit
high.
But
you
get
the
point
it
takes
time.

know
we
intend
to
offer
about
a
penny
a
right
at
most
and
that's
one
of
the
things
I
can
did
was
max
out
the
cost
of
of
domains
of
$30.
Similarly,
that
GL
BC
will
help
set
the
maximum,
and
you
know
it
takes
about
three
seconds
to
write
to
the
ledger,
and
you
know
people
there
were
talks
from
alley,
Bob
and
other
people
here
about.
You
know
the
kind
of
scale
that
we
would
like
to
get
to
and
it
sounds
like
there's
some
good
solutions
so,
as
I
said
we're
using
the
magic
of
composure.

if

haven't
used
composure,
you
define
the
network
with
their
data
description
language
and
they
designed
it
so
that
a
non
programmer
could
crank
out
the
data
models
and
you
have
what
looks
like
stored
procedures
already
in
JavaScript
and
you're
able
to
crank
things
together.
You
then
run
a
an
IBM
open-source
tool
called
loopback
which
generates
you
the
API,
and
this
is
just
a
swagger
description.

again,
if
anyone
here
is
a
web
programmer,
you
know,
even
if
they
haven't
had
much
time
to
dive
into
the
web,
you
can
get
here
quicker
and
I
got
lazy,
I
decided
not
to
what
you
can
customize
swagger
I'm,
sorry,
loop

access
and
everything.
I
got
really
lazy.
I
just
threw
up
the
default.

Network
hid
that
behind
a
firewall
and
open
up
a
secure
connection
from
Asher's
API
management,
so
now
an
Asher's
whole
API
key
system
where
you
can
invite
a
developer,
it's
a
little
bit
ghetto.
It's
kind
of
new,
but
someone
can
go
and
request
a
key
right
now
and
be
writing
to
the
ledger
in
ten
minute.

kind

thing
I
contributed
to

Beyond
the
you
know
the

Isn't
this
isn't
staggering
tech,
but
I
had
this
fun
idea
that
that,
since
lawyers
were
so
conservative
that
and
resistant
to
new
technology,
what
what
were
they
used
to
doing
and
the
lawyers
now
all
except
DocuSign
or
Adobe
sign,
and
they
don't
really
question
it.

Even
though
I
didn't
know
too
much
about
the
details
until
fairly
recently,
when
I
looked
into
it
turns
out,
you
sign
a
PDF
by
there's
an
area,
that's
marked
off
for
the
signature,
there's
a
standard
header
that
says
what
byte
range
it
is.
You
actually
generate
a
public/private
key
pair.
Take
the
data
outside
of
that
area.
Do
like
a
sha-256
hash,
digitally
sign
it
and
jam
it
in
I'm
like
what
sounds
an
awful
lot
like
what
we're
doing
on
blockchain
and
since
they
would
accept
it.

words,
you
can
ingest
the
data,
use
the
PDF
itself
as
a
data
transformation
mechanism.
So
that's
an
example
of
what
I
thought
to
do
with
it.
So

a

LegalZoom,
so
I
went
in
and
created
a
real-world
lease
agreement
and
if
I
submit
this
I'm
submitting
the
PDF
up
to

server,
it's
then
getting
submitted
to
dilligent
it's
extracting
the
data
out
of
it
so
I
sent
it
I
sent
it
a
list
of
terms.
I
was
looking
for,
rent
amount,
security
deposit.

all
of
the
sudden,
this
has
taken
a
digital
document
that
had
no
traceability
in
it.
We've
extracted
the
data
and
blockchain
did
and
diligent
and
other
similar
systems
can
OCR
stuff
too.
So
you
can
scan
the
paper
documents
of
the
world
in
all
of
the
sudden
extract
the
data,
so
we
believe
fully
computable.
Smart
contracts
are
years
away,
but
we
believe
this
is
an
intermediate.
We
call
them
against
mark
documents
as
opposed
to
smart
contracts,
and
we
believe
that
you'll
be
able
to
get
computable
fields
for
things
like
automated
cap
tables.

same
way

grabbing
data
hashing

commonly
accepted
ledger
just
for
proof

existence

we're
not
storing

documents

same
sort

thing
can
be
applied

people

Healthcare
records
or
auto
finance
has
been
discussed,
and
you
know,
and
as
I
said,
by
leveraging
the
hyper
ledger
tools.

know
if
you
guys
are
familiar
with
composer.
They
have
this
little
web
based
authoring
environment
and
stimulated
blockchain.

simulate
the
blockchain
in
in,
like
local
storage
and
stuff
I
actually
wrote
the
Integra
ledger
when
I
was
learning
composer
in
an
afternoon,
I've
not
changed
it.
It's
kind
of
crazy
that
over
a
year
ago,
I
sat
down
and
followed
a
tutorial
and
wrote
our
production
level
software.
This
is
running
on
the
IBM
cloud.
This
is
live.
This
is
usable
today,
so
that's
kind
of
a
testament
to
just
how
good
how
good
the
hyper
ledger
stuff
is.

as
I
said,
the
our
goal
is
to
not
write
the
software,
so
cerb
manager,
if
you
get
processed,
served
their
requirements,
at
least
in
the
u.s.
jurisdictions.
For
having
a
paper
and
a
printed
copy,
this
is
a
lot
of
fraud
for
the
servers
serve
managers,
the
number
one
provider.
Well,
people
would
question.
You
know
that
that
they're
manipulating
the
data,
so
they
they
set
the
record
at
a
40
minute
integration,
but
it
was
a
single
API
call
out
of
their
data
layer.

real

blockchain,

break
the
law
and
wait
until
you
get
processed
surfed
and
the
information
that
your
hand
is
on.

piece
of

will
also
be
backed

We've
done
stuff,
where
we
built
Microsoft,
Word
plugins-
and
you
know
liked.
Entities
are
not
just
for
people
and
not
even
just
for
documents,
but
we
listen
down
on
the
track.
Changes
mechanism
and
registered
a
hash
for
every
change
contract
expresses
is
the
leading
contract
generation
software
that
law
firms
use.

this
is
kind
of
a
real-world
industrial
version
of
what
I
quickly
showed
us
a
demo
net
documents
has
done
the
deepest
demo
at
their
conference.
They
recently
showed
assigning
IDs
and
an
encrypting
email.
They
have
about
30
percent
of
the
legal
documents
out
there.
So
again,
they're
definitely
they'll
be
going
live
with
it
soon,
so
odds
are
you'll,
probably
have
some
document
you
deal
with
a
company
passed
through
there,
and
you
know
our
goal
is
to
add
the
integral
ledger
services
to
all
legal
software.
So
this
is
some
of
the
integrations
we
have.

we
did
something
really
interesting.
Joining
the
consortium
is
free,

concept,
so
those
hundred
sixty
members
have
all
committed
to
doing
proof
of
concepts.
So
Latham
is
the
number
two
law
firm
in
the
world.

will
be
hosting
one
of
the
first
nodes,
so
they're
proof
of
concept
will
involve
that
and
they
use
I
managed,
so
we're
working
with
them
to
do
a
proof
of
concept.
So,
yes,
they're
the
the
thing
that
is
keeping
this
from
going
live
really
is
we're
waiting
on
the
technical
advisory
board
to
come
up
with
the
standards
so
that
everyone
is
comfortable
with
it,
but
the
blockchain
is
live
and
some
production
data
is
getting
written
into
it.
