been
Cisco's
been
looking
at
the
blockchain
space
for
a
number
of
year
now,
number
of
years
about
four
years
now,
looking
at
you
know
a
variety
of
opportunities,
different
architectures,
different
technologies,
different
topologies
and
trying
to
figure
out.
Where
are
the
business
cases?
Where
is
the
ROI?
How
do
we
actually
sell
blockchain?
How
do
we
actually
allow
others
to
sell
blockchain?
How
do
we
create
economies?

do
we
create
markets,
and
so
we've
been
looking
at
this
fairly
exhaustively
across
a
number
of
technology
areas,
a
number
of
segments
and
markets
and
trying
to
figure
out.
You
know
what
what's
the
motivation
of
this
technology?
Why
are
companies
looking
at
this
and
clearly
there's
a
lot
of
excitement
on
the
cryptocurrency
side
where
all
of
this
kind
of
really
started
from,
but
is
there
actually
an
opportunity
for
enterprise
and
that's
one
of
the
challenges
that
we
decided
to
undertake
for
ourselves?
So
you
know

of
the
things
that
we've
been
looking
at
as
we
look
through
this
technology
is
what
are
the
opportunities
right.
We
are
seeing
blockchain
being
defined
and
described
as
a
new
network.
We're
seeing
new
business
models
emerge
right,
we're
seeing
a
lot
of
technological
advances
in
smart
contracts
in
consensus,
in
even
storage,
architectures
I
mean
I'm.
Super
excited
that
this
is
probably
you
know
the
first
blockchain
conference,
where
I
don't
actually
have
to
explain
what
blockchain
is
right
in
that
you
know.

That's
that's
a
testament
to
kind
of
the
work
and
the
effort
that
this
community
has
put
in.
You
know
to
really
understand
what
are
the
implications
for
all
of
these
transformational
capabilities,
but
now
in
a
distributed,
ledger
fashion
and,
of
course,
we're
seeing
multiple
architectures
being
developed,
being
deployed
on
and
being
strung
together
in
such
a
way
that
we
can
kind
of
create
Universal
transparency
across
multiple
ecosystems,
multiple
industries
and
segments
and

at
this

a
lot
of
opportunity
that
we're
seeing
and

that
most
of
the
folks
in
this
room

people
that
were
attending

as

that

start
our
journey
in
blockchain,
we
wanted
to
understand,
you
know.
What's
the
motivation?
Well,
we
started
in
late.
2014
we
wanted
to
understand.
Well,
is
actually
an
opportunity
where
Cisco
as
a
provider
is
the
most
trusted
provider
of
infrastructure.
You
know:
is
there
a
role
that
we
could
play
at
the
infrastructure
layer
in
driving
performance,
scalability
security
of
cryptocurrencies
Bitcoin
at
the
time?

Is
there
a
way
we
can
actually
get
that
into
the
banks
into
the
financial
institutions,
recognizing
that
these
institutions
are
spending
a
lot
of
money,
trying
to
understand
the
technology
and
trying
to
figure
out?
Where
do
they
go
from
there
and
fundamentally,
what
we
kind
of
discovered
in
our
early
investigation
was
that
a
lot
of
the
people
who
were
getting
into
the
blockchain
space
we're
trying
to
figure
out
how
do
they
drive
more
transparency
obvious
right?
How
do
they
create
less
friction
in
how
they
do
business
with
one
another
right?

do
they
actually
accelerate
their
ability
to
do
business
across
their
ecosystem?
We're
looking
at
this
as
a
means
of
actually
stamping
out
complexity,
how
do
you
actually
simplify
business
process?
Business
interactions?
How
do
you
actually
simplify
the
relationship
between
multiple
stakeholders
across
an
ecosystem
and,
of
course,
how
do
you
actually
drive
more
security,
there's
still
a
big
misconception
in
the
blockchain
space
we
find
in
that
there's
still
a
lot
there's
still
this
this
tagline
of.
If
we
now
introduce
blockchain,
we
now
have
a
more
secure
everything.

Well
that
couldn't
be
further
from
the
truth.
Truth
all
blockchain
provides.
You
is
data,
integrity,
data
immutability.
You
still
have
to
rely
on
best
practices
of
end-to-end
security
from
him
from
infrastructure
all
way
up
to
applications.
You
know
we've
proven
time
and
time
again,
that
you
can
actually
compromise
blockchain
ecosystems
by
simply
undermining
the
underlying
infrastructure,
and
so
how
do
we
actually
create
a
holistic
view
of
security
from
the
bare
wires
all
the
way
up
to
the
applications
at
business
process?

we
started
looking
at
this
and
you
know
in
the
in
the
top.
The
top
left
there.
A
lot
of
really
good
financial
services
use
cases,
but
as
we
looked
more
deeply,
what
we
found
was
that
a
lot
of
these
use
cases
were
really
focused
around.
How
do
you
drive
behavioral
change
in
an
industry
that
is
quite
change?
Resistant
right
now
there
has
been
a
lot
of
early
investment.
That's
gone
in,
there's
been
a
lot
of
pilots.
A
Pocs
we've
seen
some
early
production
deployments
in
this
space,
but
my
sense
is
that
it
may
take
a
little
bit
longer
and
then
most
people
are
willing
to
admit
for
blockchain
to
become
the
dominant
and
mainstay
way
of
of
how
business
is
actually
conducted
across
that
ecosystem.
So
we
started
to
look
at
other
use
cases
other
segments.
How
do
we
drive
blockchain
adoption,
quick
in
environments
that
are
say
less
regulatory,
all
right,
there's
there's
a
little
less
burden
there,
where
there
may
not
be
as
much
embedded
infrastructure
in
place.
That
has
to
be.
A
You
know
in
some
cases,
rip
and
replaced,
which
I
think
is
probably
the
the
wrong
way
of
approaching
how
you
can
actually
introduce
blockchain
technology,
and
so
we
started
looking
at.
You
know
what
our
government's
doing,
what
are
kind
of
the
capital-intensive
industries
doing?
How
can
they
actually
look
at
blockchain
technology?
What
are
their
use
cases?
What
are
their
pain
points,
and
it
became
quite
apparent
that
there
are
a
lot
of
good
use
cases.
The
challenge
still
exists
on.

So
everything
from
supply
chain
through
to
how
you
manage
identity,
which
I
think
is
probably
one
of
the
most
biggest
contributions,
that
the
blockchain
space
can
actually
deliver
in
order
in
actually
advancing
kind
of
humanity,
and
how
do
we
actually
manage
identity,
but
take
it
a
step
further?
Not
only
are
we
managing
identity
of
individuals
could
we
actually
manage
identity
of
devices
applications
resources
within
networks?
How
do
we
actually
string
all
these
together?
So
we
have
a
clear
line
of
accountability
in
our
digital
workflows,
so.

Iot,
that's
that's
popped
up
numerous
times
it
popped
up
so
many
times
that
it
warranted
folks,
like
Cisco
and
and
my
buddy
Peter
from
Bosch
here
to
actually
co-found
and
start
a
an
industry
consortium.
Looking
at
specifically,
how
do
you,
what
does
it
actually
mean
to
blockchain
enable
something
that
speaks
to
the
internet,
whether
it's
a
sensor
or
an
edge
compute
device
or
an
IOT
gateway
or
even
an
autonomous
vehicle?
What
does
that
actually
mean?
What
are
the
opportunities
in
this
use
case
here?

we're
seeing

seeing
a
lot
of
interest
in
manufacturing,
connected
factories
connected
factories
that,
if
you
have
instrumentation
down
at
the
Machine
level
and
accountability
down
to
the
Machine
level,
now
you
can
create
an
entirely
new
dynamic
between
producer
and
consumer
of
the
services
that
are
kind
of
kind
of
being
leveraged
out
of
this
connected
factory.
So,
in
this
use
case,
you've
got
a
machine
that
is
responsible
for
manufacturing
certain
parts.

the
ability

deep

the

and

to

the
really
interesting
use
cases
is
around
energy
right,
and
so
we've
all
heard
about
the
use
case
around
energy
markets
and
creating
certificates
around
a
renewable
energy
and
actually
creating
a
marketplace
for
that.
For
that
data
taking
a
step
further,
each
of
these
solar
panels
is
maintained.
Each
of
these
solar
panels
is
on
an
actuator
that
moves
the
solar
panel,
so
it's
actually
generating
the
maximum
amount
of
electricity
as
the
Sun
moves
across
the
sky.

we
capture
that
data,
could
we
actually
build
a
market
for
that
data
right
so
one
we
already
have
a
market
for
the
electricity
that's
been
generated,
but
what
about
the
data
that
proves
how
that
electricity
was
manufactured?
That
proves
the
quality
and
the
yield
of
that
information.
So
we're
actually
seeing
use
cases
around
this
with
a
ot
data,
is
now
being
captured
and
turned
into
a
collateralized
asset
that
can
be
bought
and
sold
on
an
exchange
right
that
couldn't
have
happened
earlier
without
watching
technology.

cities,
pops
up
a
lot,
we've
seen
so
much
interest
in
smart
cities,
every
city
with
with
ambitions
of
you
know,
being
the
most
green
city,
ambitions
of
being
autonomous
and
Eve.
You
ready
they're
all
looking
at
how
do
they
leverage
the
technology
in
such
a
way
that
they're
sharing
the
burden
of
the
liability
of
the
infrastructure,
the
service,
the
maintenance
right?

little
work
that
needs
to
be
done
there,
but
if
it
can
be
done
and
it
can
be
done
in
an
interoperable
fashion,
which
is
I
think
would
be
the
way
that
it
has
to
happen.

that's
a
probably

pretty
significant
movement

kind

validation
of
the
power
that
blockchain
technology
can
deliver.

case
in
connected

smart
cities
is
electric
car
charging
right
in
an
environment
that
may
be
a
multi-stakeholder
environment
where
you
have
one
party
responsible
for
the
delivery
of
electricity.

party
responsible
for
the
payment
infrastructure,
one
party
responsible
for
the
maintenance
of
the
actual
infrastructure
itself,
the
cars,
the
owners
of
the
cars.
How
do
we
actually
manage
and
orchestrate
this
in
a
multi-stakeholder
environment
right?
This
is
one
of
the
use
cases
that
we're
seeing
time
and
time
again.

do
we
actually
create
a
city
infrastructure
that
is
Evi,
ready
and,
of
course,
take
that
a
step
further?

do
we
actually
create
infrastructure

autonomous
vehicle
ready
right,
autonomous
vehicles
are
here
they're,

widely
distributed.

we
would
like,

they're

make

their
own

the

emerging
trend

only

cases

we've

prototyped
is
in
roadside
infrastructure,
where
autonomous
vehicle
decision
makings
decisions

be
made
on
data
that

five

ten
miles
away
right.

event
of

data

Today
you
know
every
autonomous
every
every
vehicle
with
GPS
is
getting.
Has
you
know
analogy
an
LTE
or
a
4G
connection
is
getting
real-time
traffic
updates,
but
as
it
turns
out
that
traffic
is
your
information,
those
recommendations
on
average,
a
thirty
minutes
old,
all
right,
so
you
may
you
may
get
a
recommendation
to
change
change
your
route,
but
the
event
that
caused
that
change
in
route.
That
recommendation
is
based
on
data.
It's
thirty
minutes
old.

And
we're
seeing
some
significant
opportunities
in
machine-to-machine
economy
right
so
being
able
to
create
industries
and
connect
industries
across
multiple
segments
where
they
can
actually
share
information,
high
efficacy,
information,
high
quality
information
to
create
new
monetization
models
right.
So
the
IOT
and
solar
energy
example
that
I
provided
earlier
is
an
example
where
an
actuator
that
turns
a
solar
panel
around
is
in
fact,
potentially
its
own
market
maker.
Right
machines
can
become
market
makers,
whether
they're
conducting
business
on
behalf
of
individuals,
enterprises
or
other
machines.

This
is
one
of
the
ones
that
our
own
supply
chain
organization
is
actually
quite
excited
about.
Prescriptive
manufacturing,
the
idea
that
you
could
actually
capture
an
entire
bill
of
materials,
the
entire
specification
of
something
that
needs
to
be
manufactured,
all
your
tolerances.
All
that
information
captured
within
a
document
that
is
then
simply
broadcast
across
multiple
business
networks,
multiple
ecosystems
for
real-time
bidding
of
the
manufacturer,
components
that
can
actually
be
turned
into
finished
products
right.

In
order
to
make
this
happen,
you
need
to
have
visibility
into
the
quality
of
the
underlying
infrastructure.
What
is
the
quality
of
the
actual
machine
that
will
be
generating
the
parts
that
are
in
here
that
are
being
asked
of
right
so
being
able
to
capture
all
this
information
being
able
to
packaged
it
in
such
a
way
that
not
only
are
you
looking
at
the
manufacturer
of
the
different
parts,
but
then
how
are
they
financed?
Can
they
actually
be
financed
at
a
lower
rate?
Can
you
actually
leverage
better
cost
of
capital
across
the
entire
ecosystem?

compliance
we're
seeing
this
come
up
over

over
again,
certainly
in
the
healthcare
space.
How
do
you
ensure
that
the
infrastructure
that
is
would
say
within
a
hospital
is
actually
compliant
in
such
a
way

infrastructure
is
configured
and
provably
configured
in
such
a
way
that
you
don't
have
any
HIPAA
issues,
HIPPA
compliance
issues,
there's
no
violation
of
data
being
actually
accidentally
delivered
to
unauthorized
individuals

fact,
other

could

and

technology

a
highly
complex
environment,
so
Cisco
supply
chain.

operates
in

locations,
we
generate
millions
of
products
per
year.

is

shortage

slower
to

consumers

to
make
sure

conflict

opportunity
for

that

area
where
we
can
actually
take
the
lessons
learned

we've

deployed
blockchain
across
our
ecosystem,
to
see,
if
there's
an
opportunity
there
for
other,

others
to

kind
of
benefit.

insights
that
we

we've
collected
so
great
marking
counterfeit.

with

good
enough
for
us
to
simply
consume
the
blockchain
technology
for
a
business
case
just
for
us,
but
could
we
actually

we've
done

and
deliver
it
as
a
component
of
value

give

an
idea,
sorry

went
a
bit

counterfeit
electronic
space
is
around
say
five
billion
dollars.

customers

send
in
a

losing

the

mark

it's

warranty
calls
come
in

we
found
that
there
are

many
solutions
out
there

we

evaluate

of

technologies

out

at
