Permissioned ledgers such as Fabric employ consensus to avoid central points of failures without endangering the blockchain consistency. Much attention has been given to consensus algorithms, their scalability, performance, and fault model (crash or Byzantine). However, much less attention has been paid to auxiliary protocols such as state transfer and reconfiguration, that any consensus "engine" must also support.

In this talk, I'll discuss some essential performance and scalability aspects of some well-known crash and Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus protocols such as Raft and PBFT, illustrate some limitations of these protocols when recovering crashed nodes and reconfiguring the group, and show how to cope with these limitations.

The last part of the talk will report the experience of my team on the design and implementation of the first Byzantine fault-tolerant orderer service for Fabric 1.1, showing how the issues above affected our system and pointing some features that should be considered if this project wants to avoid them. Finally, I'll finish the presentation with some suggestions for making Fabric more friendly to new ordering service implementations.

Identity is a fundamental component of any business-to-business transactional platform. It is a problem the blockchain platforms uniquely resolve. However, for blockchain networks to be able to transact within and between networks they need a common identity mechanism. The Indy project within Hyperledger represents the latest technology for business and individual identities. R3 has partnered with this project to bring their unique identity solution to the Corda platform. Come hear how this unique collaboration of Hyperledger members represents not only a technology integration but a fundamental step to portable identities across blockchain platforms.

Hart Montgomery, Fujitsu Laboratories of America

Achieving strong privacy and confidentiality on a blockchain can be a difficult thing to get right. In fact, it can even be difficult to map real-world privacy and confidentiality requirements into functional blockchain requirements. In this talk we discuss various aspects of cryptography, security modelling, and the techniques involved in different Hyperledger projects--including things like threshold signatures, SNARKs, security games, universally composable cryptography, the shared crypto-lib, Sawtooth's private data objects, and Fabric's channels--that enable us to build blockchains that have various privacy and confidentiality properties. We will give an overview of what it means to be a "secure" blockchain with regards to privacy and confidentiality and explain the best practices towards achieving this.

by the Global Legal Blockchain Consortium - David Berger, Integra Inc

Beyond the Hype. We hope to help break the notion that there is not any good real-world example of Blockchain utilization outside of finance and combat they myth of extreme cost and technicality difficulty. The Integra Ledger, a Blockchain for the legal industry, utilizes Hyperledger Fabric and Composer to deliver a live consortium controlled Blockchain backed by members including IBM, AIG, Net Documents, Orrick, Perkins Cooie, and Liberty Mutual.

While Smart contracts are interesting The Integra Ledger focuses on other critical utility services such as Universal Identity, Proof of Existence and PGP public key distribution.

Membership in the consortium requires producing a proof of concept and we will present some real-world use cases that members have produced.

Simon Dyson, Yorkshire & Humber Regional Cyber Crime Unit

Cryptocurrency and blockchain technologies are changing the way that value and data is transferred and stored. Bitcoin was the genesis that turned the wheel to the development of blockchain and is subsequently extensively written about. In this talk Simon explores the difficulties that investigators face with the new wave of privacy currencies, decentralised exchanges and smart contracts. As non-permissioned blockchains develop the new web technologies that can host persistent secure decentralised websites or content a new paradigm is born. Storage solutions, messaging applications and decentralised social media are all deployed or in development. Incident response is explored using examples of when blockchain goes bad. The talk gives a unique take by looking through the lens of those who are required to adapt to new technology and to serve the public.

Bruce Schneier, Fellow and Lecturer, Harvard Kennedy School

Blockchain is fundamentally a technology that enables trust. Trust is much more than verification. It is a complex social system that underpins all of society. Understanding how blockchain distributes trust, how it shifts trust from people to technologies, and where it doesn't, is critical to understanding its security and usefulness.

The European Union’s ("EU") General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), which went into effect on 25 May 2018, is the most significant overhaul of EU data protection rules in 20 years. It imposes stringent requirements on companies that collect, store, or process data about EU data subjects, regardless of whether their systems are in the EU. This panel will outline some of the blockchain properties that represent challenges from a GDPR perspective, describes various approaches for readying blockchain solutions for GDPR, and outlines the need for a robust governance process. And, of course, we will talk about the right to erasure.

Duncan Johnston-watt & Kevin O'Donnell, Blockchain Technology Partners

In this talk we provide a brief overview of Hyperledger Sawtooth and our rationale for focusing on this framework. We discuss the challenges of running Sawtooth in production and the benefits of standardizing on Kubernetes as the underlying container orchestration platform. We then introduce blockchain management platform https://blockchaintp.com/sextant/ that delivers one-click deployment of enterprise-grade Hyperledger Sawtooth networks running on Kubernetes in the cloud. We explain how Sextant utilizes a Sawtooth distribution built, tested and maintained by us. We wrap with a demo of Sextant and call to action to get involved and try this out for yourself on https://aws.amazon.com/marketplace/pp/B07KDRYTY5

IoT devices that sign their own transactions establish a trusted channel from the device to the blockchain with no need to trust any intermediary on the way. Running an entire SDK executing the Hyperledger protocols, however, may not be possible on devices with little processing and memory resources.

The SDK Proxy is a cloud service that enables such lightweight IoT devices to sign their own transactions while off-loading the communication with Hyperledger Fabric to the proxy. This significantly reduces the footprint of the client while maintaining the trusted channel from the device to the peers.

The demo shows an IoT device signing and submitting sensor readings via the SDK Proxy to Hyperledger, peers verifying the readings' signature, and the device receiving acknowledgments for the transactions.

Chaincode must meet high standards of quality and strict security specifications. Not satisfying these requirements impairs the whole system and can prevent reaching consensus among the peers in the network. Vulnerabilities, unintended behaviors, and system failures can violate such requirements and make entire systems running on top of Hyperledger Fabric unusable.
To address this problem, we identified nine security patterns for chaincode. Moreover, we implemented an automated static analyzer to identify and pinpoint these vulnerabilities. Our analyzer is publicly available at https://chaincode.chainsecurity.com/ and is free to use for non-commercial use. It is the first static analyzer implemented specifically for chaincode programs. In this talk, we discuss the vulnerability patterns and show how the static analyzer identifies them in Hyperledger Fabric chaincode.

Single Windows solutions are common place in the logistics industry. While this works within a country, facilitating trust and handover between borders is the new challenge. With approximately 10% of containers being able to be physically checked, a new solution is necessary. Hypertrace provides customs agencies the ability to verify the authenticity, origin of the goods itself and handover in a trusted and transparent way. With such a solution, the amount of containers to be inspected drops significantly because of the immutable aspects of the blockchain as well as the distributed ledger between parties.

Ralph will show:
Handshakes (multi-signature on Hyperledger) for material from the beginning to the end of the supply chain; Manufacturers to transport to customs to retailer
- Using Hyperledger Explorer to give the insight in the complete logistics chain.

Thomas Bohner, IntellectEU & Ruben Gevaert, Belfius

IntellectEU, Belfius, and the city of Bonheiden have joined forces to create a SmartCycling Application. The goal was to motivate pupils to go to school on foot or by bicycle. Via an Internet-of-Things chip the municipality collects data on the number of bike rides, the kilometers traveled, fuel savings, avoided CO2 emissions, calories burned, and so on.

The children receive digital tokens they can use to pay at the village fair or at the local merchant. The more kilometers they cover, the more "ducaten" (tokens) they receive. These tokens are tracked on a distributed ledger network: Hyperledger Fabric.

Ruben and Thomas will explain the complexity and challenges to create a local currency, define the business and legal challenges and demonstrate the live application. SmartCycling is in production since September 2018 and will be rolled out in more Belgian cities.

Approach, Experiences and Reflections - Imre Kocsis, Budapest University of Technology and Economics

During the last year, our research group began to gather experience in blockchain education. We concluded our first university blockchain course in “Blockchain technologies and applications” (with 200+ students and numerous alumni), ran multiple industrial courses and successfully applied for online course development at a major European industrial consortium.

The talk discusses our approach towards Blockchain education that emphasizes distributed ledger and integration platform aspects, in a technologically balanced way - the introduced platforms range from Hyperledger Fabric/Composer to Ethereum. The course presents in-depth the different alternate distributed ledger solutions and principles in the Hyperledger project; an important aspect is the overview of the entire blockchain development lifecycle, covering the Hyperledger ecosystem and the application know-how of its individual elements. We provide a broad overview of application patterns, from middleware through cooperation to tokenization.

The talk is an overview of the didactic strategy, complemented by the experiences based on the feedback from our audiences and practical problems solved by them.

“Blockchain is not an island,” is a familiar refrain these days. Practical implications of bringing trading partners into a blockchain-based consortium where they share data and jointly manage the lifecycle of smart contract applications are daunting for many businesses. Who approves new members joining the network? How is chaincode deployment or upgrade are agreed by the members? The need to simplify these processes and automate them leveraging blockchain technology itself is quickly becoming apparent. Is it possible to implement governance policies with sufficient flexibility, while also automating the fundamentals through voting and other means? We’ll discuss practical customer use cases based on Hyperledger Fabric applications and how these issues were addressed. We’ll also cover how business confidentiality needs are met and access control integrations for fine-grained authorizations.

Traditional cloud systems are built to be distributed and (typically) fault tolerant. There is a huge uptake in systems that are distributed and fault tolerant. Blockchains, on the other hand, are decentralized and byzantine fault tolerant. This means that they have different operational considerations than typical distributed systems. At Monax, we've been running, maintaining, operating, upgrading, and monitoring blockchain networks in cloud based systems for over four years. This talk with focus on our lessons learned. It will be focused predominantly on the intersection between Kubernetes and blockchain technology and provide an overview of the key operational considerations that cluster administrators should keep in mind: runtime boot, network boot, runtime upgrades, monitoring and alert management, and log management.

Business processes are a well-known way to capture collaboration logic among parties. The talk will show how to support business process modeling in consortial blockchain, incl. the automated generation of smart contract logic, so that business level decisions can be directly translated to the blockchain level. This “blockchainification” will bring the advantages of distributed ledger technologies to business collaborations. As a further benefit, the logic of smart contracts can be analyzed and high level test cases can be defined besides supporting portability across different consortial blockchains.

The talk will demonstrate the method in different business domains (supply chain finance, logistics, etc.) and give an example for synthesizing a process from event logs. The method is based on open source technologies (Camunda BPMN editor, Eclipse, Hyperledger Fabric/Composer).

How to get a Blockchain Project in Production - Marco Alarcon & Andrés Araya, Bolsa Comercio Santiago

At the Santiago Stock Exchange, we underwent a research project to be the first to implement a Blockchain based solution for the equity market in Chile.

In this session we will expose how we gestated this project since the design phase until how we started to deploy and run this in production, with all the problems that arose and how we solved them, using Hyperledger Fabric as the base framework.

We will expose the implemented architecture that allows today to operate this solution, and how this platform helps to reduce costs, improve trust between participants and enable new business models.

The implementation of Blockchain technology in the public sphere must be a priority of any Administration that intends to promote the development of the private sector and the improvement of its services to citizens.

The Government of Bizkaia, the Provincial Council, has made a profound transformation of its information systems, prioritizing the use of standard technologies and open source software.
This presentation will show how a Blockchain platform has been designed and implemented to be used by both the citizens and the organizations and companies of Bizkaia, generating a Blockchain as a Service, complemented with an experimentation framework. Multiple elements have also been integrated into the platform, such as Hyperledger Fabric tests to guarantee integrity, Hyperledger Caliper to check the performance, and Hyperledger Explorer and Composer for other activities.

John-Paul Thorbjornsen, CanYa & Rory Houston, Skyy Network

Enterprise blockchains are fundamentally redundant, shared-access blockchains with high fault tolerance. Deploying an enterprise blockchain is far more expensive to implement and maintain, but the cost-savings are realised beyond the infrastructure layer. Enterprise users realise efficiency, compliance and governance cost savings when multiple enterprise users (or departments) can share fault-tolerant read/write access to a database that is a verifiable single-source of truth. Additionally, by using programmable money on a triple-entry ledger, multiple enterprise users can turn data access into its own economy that trustlessly distributes value where it is demanded.
In this talk, JP and Rory deep dive into real-world use cases that employs these principles to disrupt how enterprises share and monetise data using blockchains.

Shan Yu, Alibaba Cloud

Hyperledger Fabric has a very comprehensive design and is suitable for cross-enterprise business networks. But there are still challenges when it comes to deployment in a production environment, especially from storage's and network's perspectives. In this topic, firstly, Shan will provide a storage hotspot analysis against Hyperledger Fabric, and provide a formula for storage capacity estimation. Furthermore, Shan will suggest a cloud-native storage solution for key components (Orderer, Peer, Kafka, ZooKeeper, CouchDB) of Hyperledger Fabric to achieve high availability. Secondly, Shan will summarize typical networking patterns as well as pros&cons for consortium blockchain. Then Shan will present a cloud-based solution which can securely connect organizations within VPC on public cloud and within the private data center while protecting business applications behind blockchain.

Alejandro (Sasha) Vicente Grabovetsky & Nicola Paoli, AID:Tech

Deploying Hyperledger Fabric to production on Kubernetes is not a solved topic, AID:Tech present their work on designing and open-sourcing Helm Charts.

Rather than developing a monolithic Helm chart, AID:Tech created 4 separate and configurable charts for deploying Hyperledger Fabric components, namely the Certificate Authority, Peer, CouchDB and Orderer.

Sasha demonstrates how to deploy these charts together using Kubernetes on a cloud-based cluster, and connect them to Hyperledger Composer (using a chart under development).

NOTE: If you intend to follow the workshop and run the commands youselves, to ensure smooth sailing, we highly encourage you to:

1) Obtain a Cloud platform (AWS, GCP, Azure, IBM Cloud) account with some free credits, and create a basic Kuberentes cluster with 4 nodes
2) Obtain a cheap or free domain name (either with your cloud provider or elsewhere)

Revitalizing the Relationship Between the Consumer and Brand “Data is the New Bacon” - Lisa Marks, ChainNinja

Market research is an invaluable industry for every market; learning what the consumer likes and how they want it is vital. Unfortunately, the industry has not evolved since its inception in the 1950s. Since then both market trends and technologies have advanced considerably; it’s time for a rebirth. Enter the world’s first USPTO consumer opinion and behavioral data economy blockchain enabled survey. We now have a way to identify and capture consumer opinions and behavioral data in an ultra-secure and at the highest GDPR level 1 compliant manner.

ChainNinja Blockchain Solutions, world-class Blockchain development and advisory firm, as The Opinion Economy’s development partner, successfully developed and deployed the Opinion Economy’s blockchain network, which is leveraged to connect brands to consumers for survey research purposes. On Friday, October 5th, 2018, the newly developed OEB application was successfully deployed and demonstrated the capability to self-enroll its first Contact Agency, Survey Agency and group of Respondents. These parties were then able to complete an automated peer-to-peer transaction within minutes of enrollment, marking the first live transaction. identify and capture consumer opinions and behavioral data in an ultra-secure and at the highest GDPR level 1 compliant manner.

There are 1.7 billion unbanked adults around the globe -- they lack even a basic savings account. However, they are served by a network of microfinance institutions (MFIs) and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) who provide them with basic financial services on the ground. To date, the data generated by these entities has not been leveraged to drive financial inclusion. Kiva is building and implementing an identity and credit history platform in Sierra Leone that federates this data and makes it usable by the broader financial services sector. Matthew will discuss Kiva's 13-year history of operating in the unbanked world, the path to bringing decentralized digital identity and credit history to areas with no internet connectivity, and the ecosystem that must develop to bring broad financial inclusion globally by 2030.

Free Your Developers from Dealing with the Intricacies of Blockchain Networks with a Network Agnostic Broker

Swetha Repakula & Nima Kaviani, IBM

Deploying and developing smart contracts is a complicated task. A developer not only needs to understand and implement the logic of a contract but also know how to set up and integrate their nodes to a network. With configuration and management differing by network, the learning curve for a polyglot blockchain developers is quite steep.

PaaS aim to hide the complexities of the IaaS and allow cloud application developers to focus solely on their application logic. We believe the same analogy can and should be applied to blockchain application developers.

In this talk, we will demonstrate how the Blockhead broker facilitates the process of developing DApps independent of the blockchain network used. In particular, we will demo the deployment of smart contracts across both a public blockchain network (i.e. the Ethereum network) and a private blockchain network (i.e. Hyperledger Fabric).

Since its beginnings, the Fabric framework has become more robust, more modular and providing more power to develop ambitious applications.

Its new architecture has many advantages but remains difficult to understand, especially for those who are not familiar with distributed environments.

After several prototypes, Antoine CHABERT shared its decryption in a quick and simple online tutorial
(https://chainhero.io/2018/03/tutorial-build-blockchain-app-2/), to allow anyone to start designing an application entirely in Golang and based on the Fabric framework.

Now, he proposes to go further by presenting it to you!
You can take a computer to make it easier to follow the instructions. Everything will be done on a Linux environment (Ubuntu 18.04 LTS).

A hands-on workshop covering both business and technical aspects of an organization becoming a participant in the Verifiable Organizations Network (VON). Attendees will gain insight into both business and technical aspects of a Hyperledger Indy based solution.

The attendees will work in groups to deploy an organizational Hyperledger Indy based VON-X Issuer/Verifier service so they can learn about what it would take to on-board a permit service onto VON. Their service will issue Verifiable Credentials to TheOrgBook and enable a permitting workflow. The attendees will consider the business context - how would this affect existing workflows within their organizations, what would the value be to their business? They’ll also see the technical components in action - what’s involved in becoming an organization that consumes Verifiable Claims, and that issues Credentials.

Consumers have become hypersensitive to the way their digital identities are used and what data is shared with even the most trusted sources – including their financial institution. Instead of waiting for a crisis, the distributed ledger is taking action to provide consumers with the most secure digital identity developed: self-sovereign identification (SSI).
SSI is a global digital identifier built on a distributed ledger platform that permits members to securely interact with their credit union. By giving individuals control over their personal identifiable information, SSI can create a truly secure and privacy-preserving flow of information.
During this session, learn from CULedger, about the benefits of SSI, the security measures it will provide to protect digital identities and how organizations should leverage the technology to gain their users’ trust.

Carlos Castro-Iragorri, Universidad del Rosario

We have implemented a PoC for managing academic certificates on a permissioned blockchain. We are currently working within the scenario posed by Universidad del Rosario in Bogota, Colombia. We are adapting and extending the Blockcerts standard and using Hyperledger Fabric, Composer and Angular for our end-user implementation; our solution is independent from any existing cryptocurrency. Also, it is built as a network of ledgers sharing a common data structure, smart contracts and a limited set of assets. Moreover, our ledger acknowledges the aggregative structure of academic certificates; thus, making it possible to manage atomic units while facilitating the definition of relations across these units. Distributed ledgers have proven to be a viable technical solution for managing financial assets; we are using this technology to manage a different asset, academic certificates.

Smart contract performance and debuggability are very important criteria to consider when building mission critical enterprise and public blockchains. In their talk, Vijayendra Bhamidipati and Michael Chan take up Hyperledger Fabric as an example framework to present approaches/ideas towards 1) building instrumentation into the chaincode framework to allow developers to measure the performance of their smart contracts 2) allow for billing to be built into smart contracts 3) building mechanisms that can limit allocation of resources to smart contracts, and 4) building security into blockchain frameworks.

Ethereum is one of biggest networks available for deployment of decentralized applications, and enterprise-grade applications start to depend heavily on it. For Hyperledger community it is important to understand what is the way their existing HL infrastructure can nicely fit dApps deployed on Ethereum network. During this demo and presentation, we might explore the possibility of interoperation between Hyperleder platforms and Ethereum, in particular, Iroha. In the best scenario, I would show a demo app that shows how funds are transferred between Ethereum and Iroha.

Alexis Gauba, Co-Founder, Mechanism Labs and She(256); R&D, Blockchain at Berkeley; R&D, ThunderCore

Blockchain technology has been gaining popularity in the public, in industry, and in academia. However, these systems are currently limited in their ability to support robust, large-scale applications due to scalability and security challenges. A fundamental step to resolving some of these challenges lies in the consensus layer. As such, both industry and academia are heavily investing in consensus research and development, seeking alternatives to Bitcoin’s Nakamoto consensus. Many of these protocols favor Proof of Stake (PoS) as a Sybil control mechanism to today’s Proof of Work (PoW). This talk presents a systematization of knowledge within these major blockchain protocols, understanding the common challenges and solutions, and providing a formal structure within which to compare them. We break down these protocols by network, adversarial, and economic model, deeply understanding the common challenges of choosing proposers and committees, propagation, and finality.

Cloud deployments provide many benefits for developers and operations – pre-configured compute and other resources, scaling on request, managed monitoring and operations, and consumption-based pricing. In case of complex stacks, such as Hyperledger Fabric, the cloud can also provide pre-assembled, pre-configured solutions to all the underlying dependencies. We will show how Hyperledger Fabric is integrated in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as a PaaS service, and how it is provisioned, configured, and monitored in this environment. We’ll also describe how it can be deployed across multiple datacenters for affinity with local member organizations and connected in a hybrid manner with external Hyperledger Fabric instances for greater interoperability.

Countries around the world struggle with patronage political culture, political party supporters are rewarded with contracts to build roads, schools, hospitals. In the vein of recouping 'expenses', these contractors cut costs. The result is a case of poorly constructed roads, inadequate facilities and the consequent deaths in hospitals, dysfunctional school systems and numerous road accidents. Global South is really pioneering the extended use of enterprise-grade blockchain solutions in governmental processes to promote transparency and accountability. From the integration of Brazilian banks to maximize identification of banknote exchange opportunities to coffee trading in Africa, there is no limit to Blockchain innovation. Metropolis as the World Association of Large Metropolis has 138 member metropolitan regions around 5 continents. Out of them 69 are already using the technology in 255 projects! Let's discuss how Global South utilizes Blockchain, strategic guidelines for the development of DLT applications to solve particular urban issues of citizenship and democracy, land and real estate markets, infrastructure and public services, exchanges of total values, financial and non-financial, governance and finance

The challenge of serving tokenized assets in a distributed manner without any counterparties becomes one of the important tasks for the industry. Handling of private keys by legal entity means that not legal entity handles it, but exact employee or hardware of this legal entity. Balances on accounts, handled in blockchain, need to be verified for smart contract dependencies by lawyers who can read the code. Distributed mechanisms of identification and KYC/AML servicing becomes more and more complicated with GDPR requirements and risks of cyphoning of personal data. Competitive organizations are very sensitive about their data and their customer data and do not want it available to competitors and, as a result, are wary to join any shared network. This has been a sticking point for adoption. Soramitsu, Moscow Stock Exchange and Monetago have some experiences that can help everyone with answering the question of how do we make decentralization acceptable?

There is no one ultimate Blockchain, we know it by now. But in this Darwinian explosion of solutions how do we choose the best one? And if the choice leaves a lot to desire - how can we move on? Let's discuss the technical and business considerations that can help towards making the optimal choice. What are the requirements that influence decision making - like identity, anonymity, speed, governance model or the need for decentralization.

2018 was the year of Identity. Governments started developing blockchain-based national ID systems, banks started looking at KYC, healthcare industry dived into Electronic Healthcare records. It is now time to take a step back and ask: Where are we with Identity? This panel will look at the work of building the network, how it's governed, and the role of open source ledger code in its success. We will look at common use cases and impact digital identity can have on the developing world, from refugees and disaster victims to programs that have a global impact. We will discuss how self-sovereign identity can improve the KYC process, allowing any user to reuse his previously verified credential for multiple authentications. But lets also see where can we find interesting applications of identity - like e-commerce.

This session will examine the true fundamentals of the Loyalty Marketing / Incentives industry from the inside, ranging from Travel & Hospitality, to Retail, to Wellness, the inherent roadblocks to blockchain adoption, and where the opportunities lie in overcoming those.

Ironically, the first true “digital currencies” -- loyalty programs, are behind the FinTech innovation curve of the past several years, and worse still - in a market where the the codebases of the largest programs are 30+ years old COBO.

These programs are their own economy: in the US alone, loyalty programs total 3.8B member accounts, and mint $12B worth of “currency” annually.

The large programs simply can’t throw away entrenched investments in platforms and proprietary technologies, which hold trillions of records of customer activity. The smart program operators recognize their brand value, and aren’t likely to turn over brand value to the latest cryptocurrency-based coalition model startup. Further, loyalty program operators rightfully are sceptical of public blockchains where KYC and AML are all but impossible.

Will the future of loyalty on blockchain be migratory, or an upheaval?

Privacy based blockchains are becoming more popular and they are mostly proposed for public blockchains. On the other hand, privacy and zero knowledge is also required for private blockchains. These are some of the use cases;

Asset and value exchange between financial institutions
Government backed asset coins

Creating a separate channel for any two peers is not always a good solution, because real-time and self-auditing becomes a big issue then.

Currently, the algorithms proposed on zero-knowledge blockchain networks are very complicated and they are impractical to use on Hyperledger implementations. As opposed to this, we figured out some practical zero-knowledge algorithms that are simpler and practical to use on Hyperledger and they solve many problems of corporates and government.

In this workshop, we want to show samples and discuss further about practical implementations of zero knowledge proof on Hyperledger.

Hyperledger Fabric is a permissioned blockchain platform where people build applications to communicate and interact with deployed smart contracts. However, smart contracts and apps must be written in programming languages like Go or Javascript. Alternatively, Ethereum made it friendly to write smart contracts by inventing Contract-Oriented Languages, e.g. Solidity, and created a Web3 library that can be used to interact with smart contracts.
The talk will cover how an EVM has been integrated into Fabric, enabling users to write contracts in Contract-Oriented Languages as well as interact with them via the Web3 library. Developers familiar with Ethereum can easily develop on Fabric, leverage tools like Truffle & Remix, as well as migrate their Distributed Apps (DApps) with minimal effort. The talk will also describe use cases where permissioned blockchains are more desirable.

Jason Bennick & Jim Mason, Dealer Market Exchange PR LLC

Automotive and transportation sits at the very core of society. Legacy technology permeates industry business frameworks, along with a human proclivity to simplicity and a reluctance to change. With cybersecurity threats, consumer mobility and a need for speed and transparency, blockchain technology is the industry bridge to the 21st century. In this presentation, Jason Bennick and Wes Reid present a sobering look at where the automotive industry has come and where it is today, and how strategically focused blockchain initiatives across multiple use cases can address and solve an aging automotive business industry. Integration of the Hyperledger Fabric framework will be examined and discussed, and how its influence within initiatives can materially help address an industry challenge of disparate technology solutions currently in use across domestic and global automotive trade.

Bitmark & Big Pharma Create Trial Matching Program to Help Advance Health Research - Sean Moss-Pultz, Bitmark

Bitmark has partnered with big pharma company for a clinical trial matching program that gives researchers a comprehensive data source, an efficient way to track consent and data transfers, & empowers participants to own their health data, via the blockchain. People have remarkable data access rights & are ideal aggregators, but sharing data is extremely hard. Researchers are voracious for data but are limited because of environment, location, & socio-economic factors. People have few incentives to join clinical trials, registries aren’t inclusive, & there’s no way for direct communication with researchers (eg: new side effects). The Bitmark killer app for healthcare hinges on data ownership: individuals can record the daily health data via the Bitmark blockchain, which means they are claiming ownership & establishing property rights. Access control is unlocked when property rights are established—rights to share or sell their data. Now researchers can post the trail they are conducting & be paired with participants for specific types (sleep, location). Consent forms & health data records will be securely shared & tracked. Researchers and participants have direct communication.

Haider Nawab, Royal Bank of Canada

Real estate represents at $217 trillion market space that is well suited to Blockchain technology. This think tank will review the current landscape: opportunities and projects where teams are trying to simplify the workflow of real estate transactions.

Show case projects will include Propy Inc, Chromaway. We will also discuss leadership from governments including Sweden Land Registry, Dubai Land Office and the Cook County Pilot program.

If possible a demo of real estate transaction in Hyperledger Composer will be prototyped for review and discussion.

Audience members will be engaged through interactive experience to develop empathy with user experience and service design ideas.

A large market that requires accurate inputs and verification of data from multiple sources such as real estate is a great place to build projects to innovate.

Al Brandt & Eric Vaughn, BlocLedger

BlocLedger integrates with market leading document centric solutions to track, authenticate, manage and securitize e-signed documents. BlocLedger’s API enables an easy on ramp for digital transaction management companies to secure and manage high-value and high-risk asset documents in a compliant and secure fully digital environment with blockchain.

BlocLedger will demonstrate the execution of an auto lease agreement that is electronically signed, stored and transferred as a securitized asset between parties using blockchain. Leveraging Hyperledger Fabric's privacy and confidentiality features delivered in v1.2, documents are tracked, stored and managed using the Private Data and state-based endorsement features. We'll show the overall demo architecture, step through how transactions are processed, and follow the flow of a document through the architecture. Specific attention will be paid to how the document asset is stored, managed and transferred within the Fabric blockchain. Lastly, we'll discuss the trade-offs one can make while deciding what information gets stored on-chain versus off-chain (Private Data).

John Jordan, Province of British Columbia & Stephen Curran , CloudCompass Computing, Inc.

Learn about the Province of British Columbia's experience deploying the first Hyperledger Indy based production ecosystem.

The Verifiable Organizations Network (VON) enables governments and organizations to exchange data in trustworthy ways based on open standards and technology.

VON's founding members are governments who are, by law, trusted issuers of data about organizations. The Province of British Columbia, Province of Ontario and the Government of Canada have come together to create the initial services needed to establish VON.

VON's founders have delivered new Indy-based open source components which form VON's backbone. TheOrgBook is a publicly accessible repository of verifiable claims about organizations. VON-X enables services to verify and issue credentials.

We present the Why, What and How including our strategy for bootstrapping VON using a two-sided market strategy.

This talk focuses on the history of blockchains in a business context as lived and told by the CEO of the first company to build a permissioned, smart contract compatible blockchain codebase (the codebase currently known as Hyperledger Burrow). There are three phases to the talk and a predominant lesson for the future of blockchain network implementations will be gleaned from each phase. In the first phase the talk will focus on the early days -- when the community of businesses seeking to utilize blockchains were vanishingly small. This phase, known as the `huh?` phase was formative for where the technology currently is. The second phase of the talk will focus on the hype driven buzz phase of the technology which drove a huge amount of top down activity. Finally, the third phase of the talk will focus on the phase the technology is just entering where all the software folks get to work.

Kiran Garimella & Oscar Jofre, KoreConX

Financial instruments in the global private capital markets have specialized regulatory and company law requirements. These requirements increase in complexity due to the number of jurisdictions in which private companies can issue tokens and conduct business as well as the exemptions under which they issue tokenized securities. Another critical requirement is that all relevant corporate actions and events must be handled rather than just the one-time event of issuance or the secondary trading that is relatively infrequent.

These business needs help to determine the technical architectural decisions, including decentralization, security, access rights, consensus, validations, finality (both technical and legal), on-chain/off-chain considerations, and lifecycle management of smart contracts.

Kiran and Oscar describe the conditions for creating a safe, secure, and fully compliant platform.

Is the business logic in your chaincode hard to find because it is buried in code that is doing boilerplate JSON serialization and data validation? Are you developing REST APIs by hand for your domain model? Concerto to the rescue!

This talk introduces Concerto, a lightweight 100% JavaScript schema language and runtime. It works in both a Node.js process and in your browser. Concerto models can be converted to JSON Schema, XML Schema, Java, Go, Typescript, Loopback APIs, HTML web-forms and PlantUML diagrams. Concerto is used today with Hyperledger Composer, Fabric and the Accord Project's platform-independent implementation for smart legal agreements.

Traditional approaches to access control require one or more points of trust – a hardware security module or a centralized server managed by a data custodian. NuCypher provides a departure from this trust-dependent paradigm and introduces threshold split-key proxy re-encryption scheme (Umbral) – a combination of proxy re-encryption and decentralization – which enables performant permission management while preserving the encrypted state of the underlying data. Proxy re-encryption nodes provide re-encryption services without ever decrypting data. Cryptographic permissions are enforced through the issuance or revocation of re-encryption keys by data owners.

These parties were then able to complete an automated peer-to-peer transaction within minutes of enrollment, marking the first live transaction. identify and capture consumer opinions and behavioral data in an ultra-secure and at the highest GDPR level 1 compliant manner.

... Governance

Mohan Venkatamaran & Isaac Kunkel, Chainyard

This session will review a blockchain reference architecture that has been developed based on experience with Hyperledger Fabric. The presentation will first provide an overview of the reference model noting blockchain specific elements. It will then identify several specific technical and business patterns that are supported by the reference architecture. It will finish up by demonstrating how this blockchain specific reference architecture takes a holistic perspective of the solution, including both technical and business governance, for consideration during the design phase.

The reference model itself has dozens of elements which are grouped by business, users, application, tools and platform services. Within the platform services, we see sub-groupings of common and blockchain specific elements.

Patterns will include 8 design patterns that facilitate the development of blockchain solutions include several smart contract specific patterns.

The presentation will work to tie the importance of considering both technical and business governance into the design elements of the solution.

Adam Smith Meets Darwin to Buy Crypto Currency - Zeeshan-ul-hassan Usmani, Misk Foundation

This talk will compare evolution in nature (based on Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection), with similar processes happening in money, especially in the current iteration of money (cryptocurrencies), and the underlying BlockChain technology. The session will review the history and evolution of money up to this point, shortly explain Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, compare the similarities between evolution by natural selection in nature with evolution in BlockChain technology and cryptocurrencies, and will examine the potential paths for the BlockChain technology and cryptocurrencies to evolve in the future. The session will ask and facilitate the participants to come up with their own theory and practical example of blockchain of the future following Darwin's theory of evolution.

Auditability, transparency, and security are essential values for a successful blockchain platform. Typically, the key considerations for enterprises when choosing a platform are the platform’s flexibility and scalability. While these factors are important, properly authenticating and validating the participating parties—whether they be part of the consensus protocol, maintaining a ledger, or just acting as a participant—is critical to the trustworthiness of any distributed ledger. In this presentation, Avesta Hojjati will review recent progress in authentication and validation for the permissioned and permissionless blockchain platforms from the perspective of a leading Certificate Authority. He will discuss the current challenges, use cases, and future work evolving around authenticating and validating entities on these platforms.
