From YouTube: How Hyperledger Powers the IBM Digital Health Pass
Description
IBM has been leading the global movement towards secure, privacy preserving health credential management, most recently to enable the safe return to work, travel and entertainment with IBM Digital Health Pass. Building on global standards and Hyperledger Fabric, Digital Health Pass is being used by Governments and the Private Sector across a number of countries worldwide. Anthony Day (Blockchain Leader, UK&I) and Paco Curbera (Lead Architect, Digital Health Pass) will share their experience from working with IBM's clients worldwide, and talk you through the fundamental architecture of Digital Health Pass. This talk will be followed by a Q&A session where the wider group will get to share its thoughts and ideas on this important topic.
Anthony Day is a Partner in IBM’s UK & Ireland Blockchain team. He leads Blockchain transformations and creation of new business networks for IBM clients across a range of industry sectors. Francisco Curbera is Director of Innovation at IBM Watson Health, where he leads the development of blockchain technology and solutions for the healthcare and life sciences industries. Prior to that he directed technology and research programs for IBM Watson Health and was part of the IBM Research division where he lead research in service oriented computing, business process management and health informatics. He holds a B.S. in Physics from Universidad Complutense in Madrid, Spain, and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in New York.

digital
non-digital
journeys,
and
hopefully,

feel

little
bit
more
gender

when
you

hyperledger
meetup
to
present,
so
please
be
gentle
in
the

as
I
mentioned,
this
is
a
particularly
emotive
domain.
Number
of
us
in
a
number
of
jurisdictions.
Countries
locations
around
the
world
have
been
locked
down,
have
been
kept
from
our
colleagues,
our
loved
ones,
from
travel
from
sport
from
entertainment,
from
whatever
it
might
be,
that
we
were
doing
18
months
ago
and
as
a
result,
life
has
changed.
We've
seen
some
huge
positives
in
that
time.
A
I
think
you
look
at
the
self-sovereign
identity
domain,
the
digital
identity
domain,
the
awareness
of
the
possibilities,
the
awareness
of
the
capabilities
and
awareness
of
the
role
of
blockchain
in
this
particular
space
over
the
last
12
18
months
has
accelerated
more
than
I
thought.
Any
of
us
would
have
ever
thought
possible.
So
in
terms
of
awareness
in
terms
of
understanding,
in
terms
of
this
space,
getting
fair
interest
and
respect,
I
think
that's
been
a
huge
positive.

Looking
at
the
public
private
collaborations
between
governments
and
technology
organizations
over
the
last
12
to
18
months
has
also
been
a
real
positive.
Things
have
been
developed,
put
into
practice
really
fast
policy
doesn't
necessarily
move
quite
as
fast
as
technology,
as
many
of
us
know,
but
we've
seen
a
lot
of
really
good
work
and
I
think
that
will
endure
above
and
beyond
the
the
pandemic
and
what
comes
next.

I
think
what
we've
also
seen
is
a
huge
amount
of
collaboration
between
peers
competitors,
collaborators
in
terms
of
standard
development
in
terms
of
technology
and
harmonization
and
interoperability,
which
all
of
us
working
in
the
blockchain
space
knew
was
important
before
and
we
were
very
open
to
before
this
happened,
but
at
the
same
time,
you've
seen
other
organizations
who've
come
out
who
are
relatively
new
to
the
technology
domain
or
companies
looking
to
pivot
into
the
identity.
Space
have
quickly
realized,
actually
it's
about
working
together
and
that
there's
not
going
to
be
any
one.
A

What
we
are
saying
is,
we
know
a
thing
or
two
about
the
architecture
and
how
we
make
it
work
that
we're
deploying
it
for
governments
for
airlines
for
organizations
around
the
world
that
there
are
going
to
be
other
platforms
and
other
protocols
out
there
that
we
need
to
work
with
we're
going
to
see
a
smattering
of
different
government
solutions,
a
smattering
of
different
private
sector
solutions
we're
just
getting
round
to
the
idea
of
vaccination
certificates.
Anybody
in
new
york
state
will
have
seen
excelsior
pass
and
the
work
that
the
guys
are
doing
there.
A

Where
should
credentialization
happen,
our
role
is
to
help
provide
the
technology
that
is
safe.
That
is
secure,
that
is
scalable
that
is
accessible
so
that
we
can
put
that
into
practice
quickly
and
safely,
because,
frankly,
the
enemy
of
progress
in
this
space
right
now
is
paper.
Is
people
carrying
paper
documents
with
qr
codes
around
where
you've
got
90
of
staff
and
airports
right
now
serving
30
of
the
passengers?
A
You
suddenly
bring
another
20
or
30.
In
addition
to
that,
all
carrying
the
same
amount
of
paper,
the
system
breaks
real,
quick
and
you've
got
cues
for
four
five
six
hours
at
airports
or
ferry
terminals
or
wherever
it
is.
You
happen
to
be
credentialing
people
and
that's
going
to
be
a
problem.
Anybody
standing
around
in
large
queues
of
people
waiting
to
find
out
if
they're,
safe
or
not
in
a
pandemic.
It's
probably
not
a
great
situation
to
have
to
end
up
in
so
this
is
what
we're
trying
to
avoid.
A
Is
the
digitization,
the
automation,
the
trust
around
credentials
where
it
is
appropriate
for
them
to
be
used,
and
also,
let's
be
clear-
none
of
us
really
want
to
be
credentializing
ourselves
to
go
into
the
supermarket
to
go
into
coffee
shops
right.
That
is
not
the
vision
that
I
think
anybody
wants
in
this
space.
There
are
some
policy
makers
who
believe
that
that's
necessary,
but
we
hope
that's
not
the
case
in
a
broad
spectrum.
We
don't
want
to
see
1984.
We
don't
really
want
to
see
this
technology
being
pervasive
beyond
the
time
that
it's
necessary.

So
this
is
not
some
sort
of
large
draconian
play
for
gathering
lots
of
people's
data.
It
really
just
is
about
verification
with
the
policy
we
have
at
this
point
in
time,
and
we
believe
that
with
digital
health
pass
and
the
implementations
that
we've
done,
we've
done
a
decent
job
with
the
governments
and
the
clients
that
we're
working
with
to
make
that
equitable,
accessible,
safe,
secure
and
scalable.

So,
let's
get
into
the
stuff,
I'm
great
at
doing
long
intros,
without
showing
you
any
slides,
so
people
have
to
stare
at
my
face
for
a
long
time,
which
I
realize
is
probably
boring
for
you.
So
let's
look
at
some
pictures
and
visualize
this
I'm
going
to
cover
a
little
bit
on
the
context
and
paco's
going
to
do
a
deep
dive
on
the
architecture
and
what
sits
behind
digital
health
pass,
and
I
know
all
the
hyperledger
folks
out
there
are
dying
to
get
into
the
the
nuts
and
bolts
and
the
weeds
of
this.

That's
my
opening
salvo
on
to
the
next
slide,

so
every
health
business,
sorry,
every
business
is
now
a
health
business.
This
is
this
is
the
slightly
slogany
conclusion
too.
We
have
now
got
one
of
the
largest
digital
transformation
challenges
of
our
time,
which
is
the
ability
to
issue
and
verify
credentials
for
health
on
a
global
basis.
That's
where
we're
at
that's
the
interesting
realization
of
this
is
that
it
crosses
borders.
It
crosses
industries,
it
crosses
state
lines,
it
crosses
modes
of
transportation.
A

Those
people
who
are
undecided
or
can't
get
vaccinated
will
look
at
that
number
and
say
not
sure
how
I
feel
about
that.
I,
for
one,
probably
won't
be
redeeming:
the
free
dunking
donut
you
get
every
week,
not
least
of
which,
because
of
my
waistline,
if
I
get
vaccinated
but
living
in
ireland,
we
don't
have
dunkin
donuts
here
either.
A
And
what's
the
business
case
or
what's
the
rationale
I
think
from
a
government
and
a
public
safety
perspective?
I
think
we're
all
fairly
aware
of
the
issues,
but
when
we
talk
about
enterprise
and
a
lot
of
the
organizations
we
work
with,
are
enterprises
the
cost
or
the
trade-off
that
they're
looking
at
in
this
particular
space
around
credentialing
is
outbreaks,
the
costs
of
shutdowns
market
positioning
and
reputation
if
you're
found
to
have
had
an
outbreak
or
if
you
can
demonstrate
your
staff,
have
been
tested
or
are
relatively
speaking
safe.
A
You
can
use
that
as
a
way
to
say
we
have
a
five-star
rating,
you
can
you're
safe
with
us
customers,
you
can
come
back,
don't
worry.
Business
travel
is
an
interesting
one
right,
particularly
for
organizations
to
have
outbound
sales
or
engineering
teams.
This
is
a
critical
requirement.
What
you
don't
want
is
your
staff
to
be
quarantined
in
locations
where
they
have
to
spend
four
or
five
days
in
some
sort
of
airport
kennel
before
they're
allowed
to
actually
go
out
and
deliver
value
to
your
organization,
so
strategically
sourcing
credentials.

Access
to
testing
is
is
actually
a
differentiator
now
which
again,
we
wouldn't
have
thought.
18
months
ago,
employee
productivity
and
retention.
The
ability
for
employees
to
feel
safe,
pwc
in
the
uk
about
12
months
ago,
came
out
and
said
we're
going
to
actually
test
our
stuff
or
we're
going
to
actively
offer
testing
proactively
to
our
staff,
not
as
a
means
of
differentiation,
but
as
a
means
of
helping
with
their
general
feeling
of
well-being
to
help
manage
anxiety.

This
was
something
that
they
said.
We
want
our
staff
to
feel
safe
if
they've
got
to
come
back
to
offices
or
they've
got
to
go
and
meet
clients
in
a
way
that
it
cannot
be
avoided
because
they're
working
on
mission,
critical
sites,
retention
and
employee
safety
is
a
big
part
of
it
obviously
risk
reduction
and
then
the
trade-off
of
revenue
generation
revenue
protection.
If
you're
not
able
to
operate
your
businesses,
your
facilities,
your
manufacturing
sites,
your
logistics,
in
the
same
way
that
you
could
do
previously.
A
You
may
lose
business
and
then
you're,
looking
at
the
trade-off
of
proactive
testing
and
the
cost
of
a
test
which
can
be
anything
between
10,
15
and
150
of
how
often
do
I
test
how
many
staff
do
I
test
how
much
revenue
am
I
losing,
and
how
does
that
equation
stack
up
and
for
the
number
of
stuff
that
I
have?
Am
I
doing
this
for
five
or
fifty
thousand
and
as
a
result,
then
the
role
of
paper
versus
digital
becomes
much
much
more
clear.

So
these
are
some
of
the
challenges,
at
least
purely
from
an
enterprise
perspective
that
myself
and
paco
and
others
have
been
talking
through
over
the
last
12
months
and
a
number
of
organizations
on
the
fence.
Many
organizations
have
said
we'll
work
from
home
forever.
Others
have
said
those
who
are
already
out
there.
You
saw
amazon
very,
very
early,
setting
up
their
own
testing
capability.
A

So
the
trifecta-
this
is
what
it
all
comes
down
to:
it's
going
to
be
the
individual,
the
citizen,
the
issuer
of
credentials
and
the
verifier
of
credentials.
So
many
of
you
will
probably
already
be
familiar
with
this
if
you've
seen
any
of
the
work
around
self-sovereign
identity
or
trust
over
ip.
If
you've
been
reading
up
on
these
things,
you
can
probably
switch
off
and
have
a
snooze
or
do
your
shopping
list
for
the
next
two
or
three
minutes.

While
I
explain
this
because
this
should
already
be
second
nature
to
you,
but
for
most
people
who,
who
think
about
the
concept
of
passports,
they're
immediately
thinking?
Well,
obviously,
there's
a
bunch
of
pii
that's
going
on
to
a
blockchain
and
that's
really
not
the
case.
What
we're
trying
to
do
is
we're
trying
to
keep
the
contract
between
the
individual
and
the
issue
of
the
healthcare
organization
that
you
agree
to
be
tested
that
you
agree
to
be
vaccinated,
that
you
agree
to
have
a
procedure
of
some
sort.

What
we're
looking
to
do
is
enable
that
issuer
to
dem
to
generate
a
verifiable
credential
that
can
be
held
by
the
individual
and
shared
with
verifies
verifiers
being
airlines,
schools,
academia,
whether
that
be
healthcare
organizations
themselves,
the
employers
retail
locations.
If
we
go
to
that
extent,
hopefully
not
ice
cream
vendors,
I
don't
know
how
that
ice
cream
made
it
into
the
bottom
right
hand
there,
but
I
really
hope
that
doesn't
get
that
far.

This
is
what
it's
all
about
right
and
the
the
dotted
lines
in
between
here
is
what
paco's
going
to
explain
in
more
detail
later
is
how
it
works,
underneath
what
it
comes
down
to
primarily
is
about
standards.
It
comes
about
interoperability.
It
comes
about
allowing
individuals
to
share
those
credentials
in
whatever
way
possible.
Most
people
recognize
this
as
a
qr
code
right,
I
show
a
qr
code
on
the
phone
somebody
else
scans
it
and
then
I
go
or
that
it
gets
verified
the
verifier
returns
green
red
or
in
some
cases
the
verifier
sees
a
credential.

With
my
name
and
another
piece
of
data
that
I
have
to
verify.
I
then
have
to
show
my
driver's
license
my
passport,
whatever
it
might
be,
and
on
that
point
I'm
then
able
to
go
in
and
there's
an
important
distinction
here
between
a
credential
and
an
identity
and
at
a
vanilla
level.
Ibm
digital
health
pass
is
about
issuing
certificates
credentials
not
about
digital
identity,
because
that's
a
slightly
different
kettle
efficient
for
most
cases,
governments
and
regulators
are
not
looking
to
issue
digital
identities
alongside
health
credentials.

Moving
on,
please

there's
a

in
the
interest

think
I'm
going
to

can
imagine
the
idea
of
something
being
on
a
phone
and
it
being
scanned
somewhere
and
life
goes
on.
So
I'm
going

at
the
bottom,

verification
side
of
the
screen
which
says
it
hasn't
expired,
it's
valid
the
valid
signature.
So
this
is
a
an
entity,
an
issuer
that
we
recognize.
That
could
be
the
government
that
could
be
a
test
provider.

that's
the
journey
we're
on
right
now
and
you'll
see
in
there.
There
should
be
absolutely
minimum
pii
if
any
at
all,
depending
on
how
you
configure
it
if
the
ident,
if
the
identity
is
already
proven
alongside
the
credential,
you
won't
even
see
the
name
date
of
birth.
In
some
cases,
you'll
scan
that
and
you'll
say
you
need
to
verify
that
this
is
antony

Xyz
and
again
depends
on
the
journey,
but
that's
kind
of
what
you

quite
simple,
but
the
magic
is
what
happens
underneath
next

something
like
half
a
million
users
within
the
first
three
weeks,
it's
probably
close
to
a
million
now,
if
not
more,
and
it
is
within
its
own,
dedicated
app,
there's
also
a
supporting
portal
and
on
the
portal
you
go
through

number

challenge:
questions
to
enter
information
that
should
only
be
known
by
you
and
after
which
you
then
get
a
qr
code
which
you
can
either
print
or
download
to
the
app.
This
is
important
because,
again,
we're
not
tethering
a
digital
identity.

state,
national
id
or
something
like.
In
the
uk,
we
have
the
national
health
service,
which
has
its
own
digital
id
solution
that
you
could
tether
to
the
credential
if
you
want
to,
but
in
this
case
we
believe
that
authentication
could
be
sufficient
by
going
through
the
portal.
That's
for
accessibility!
That's
for
speed!
That's
for
trust!

Also,
a
lot
for
the
user
experience
and
haven't
been
through
a
number
of
these
journeys.
That's
typically
the
pattern
that
is
being
deployed.
It's
not
the
only
one.
There
are
many
different
options
and
there
is
a
trade-off
in
taking
that
particular
pattern,
but
that's
if
you're
a
resident
of
new
york
state
what
you'll
be
experiencing
today
next
page,
please.

And,
as
I
said,
there
is
going
to
be
a
patchwork
of
a
number
of
different
solutions
that
you're
going
to
see,
and
this
is
where
the
integration
challenge
comes.
So,
if
you're,
an
airline,
that's
operating
in
a
number
of
different
countries,
you're
likely
to
be
receiving
credentials
from
national
governments
from
local
test
providers.

If
you're
in
the
us
from
clear
from
ibm
digital
health
pass
from
new
york
state
from
a
number
of
different
states
who
may
all
be
having
slightly
different
directions,
if
you're
coming
back,
you
might
have
received
a
test
in
that
particular
country
that
might
be
downloaded
to
a
pharmacies,
wallet
or
private
sector
solution
of
some
sort.
You
might
be
working
and
holding
ierta's
travel
pass
or
an
nfl
specific
travel
pass
where
they
have
their
own
testing
partners.

We
believe-
and
we
hope
that
a
lot
of
the
technology
and
the
standards
that
sit
underneath
that
are
going
to
be
common,
but
as
a
citizen,
it's
entirely
possible
you're,
going
to
be
holding
two
three
four,
maybe
even
more
of
these
types
of
wallets,
depending
on
where
you
get
tested
or
vaccinated
and
depending
on
what
the
protocols
look
like
going
forward.
So
this
is
the
mishmash
of
what's
going
on
and
as
ibm
we're
participating
in
a
number
of
these
global
standards.

Groups
who
vci
the
good
health
pass
initiative,
which
is
where
most
of
the
private
sector
wallets,
are
coming
together
to
make
sure
we're
aligning
on
standards.
There's
a
lot
of
good
work
going
on.
It's
not
finished,
it's
not
done
even
in
the
eu
they're
their
standards
for
the
eu
digital
green
certificate
is
still,
I
would
say,
hardening.
It's
gone
through
a
little
bit
of
flux,
a
little
bit
of
testing
over
the
last
few
weeks,
but
it
has
been
largely
developed
and
rolled
out
in
a
couple
of
months
which,
for
the
eu
is
pretty
impressive.

I'm
going
to
skip
this
one
because
we're
cut
we're
coming
close
to
half
past
and
I
really
didn't
want
to
spend
this
much
time
talking
so
keep
going
to
the
next
one.

want
to
get
straight
to

hyperledger

fits

Architecture
of
the
system,
I'll
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
workflows
and
and
I'll
end
up
with
a
discussion
of
the
design
principles
behind
our
solution
right.
So
what
you
see
here
is
a
high-level
architecture
view
of
the
of
the
solution
we
build
on
hyperledger
fabric,
as
you
all
know
here.

do
we
use
blockchain
for
in
this
case,
so
we
don't
store
any
type
of
pii
or
even
hashes
of
pii
in
our
blockchain
right.
The
blockchain
is
just
there
to
create
trust
between
the
end-to-end
workflows
between
issuers
holders
verifiers,
so
blockchain
holds
information
about
issuers,
so
the
verifiers
can
look
them
up.
Do
a
query
against
the
ledger
and
find
the
actual
trusted
information
about
this
issue
is
somebody
that
we
know
about
it's
been
on
