humanitarian
aid
and
development
agency.
If

aware

we've

about
5,000
people.
We
operate
in
43
countries
around

world.

the
world's
largest
humanitarian
aid
and
development
agencies,
I'm
off
I'm
surprised
at
how
low
our
profile
is
in
Portland,
it's
a
bit
of
a
shocker,
considering
the
sort
of
work
that
we
do
and
the
scale
of
the
agency.
But
that's
not
why
I'm
here
today
at
Mercy
Corps,
my
title
is
senior
advisor
technology
for
development.
What
that
means
is
I'm
responsible
for
identifying
new
and
emerging
technologies
that
potential
applications
for
our
field
teams
and
then
spinning
up
trials
of
those
technologies.

do
all
of
the
really
cool
stuff
at
Mercy.

drones.
I

satellite
imagery

do
3d
printing

virtual
reality.

biometrics

also
am
the
agency's
lead

distributed,
ledger
technology
and
cryptocurrency,
and
so
I
act
as
a
consultant
across
the
agency

those
areas.

love

talk

you
more
about
that
work,

that's

actually

going
to

wanted
to
talk
to
you
a
bit
about
hyper
ledger.

when
we
looked
at
the
blockchain
landscape,
there
was
only
one
player
out
there
that
had
a
track
record
for
taking
an
open
source
technology
and
building
it
into
an
enterprise
ready
platform,
and
that
was
the
Linux
Foundation
and
the
Linux
Foundation
is
who
shelters
and
cultivates
hyper
ledger.
So
we
looked
at
hyper
ledger
and
said
this
has
got
legs.
We
want
to
be
involved
with
this
and
part
of
the
key
for
us.

Is
you
know
in
the
NGO
world,
we're
constantly
resource
strapped
so
being
associated
with
something
like
hyper
ledger
gives
us
access
to
greater
resources,
greater
expertise,
contacts,
etcetera.
So
that
was
our
motivation.
That's
how
I
got
to
be
where
I
am
right.
Now,
I'm,
a
representative
on
hyper
ledger,
I'm.
Also
the
chair
of
the
social
impact
working
group
at
hyper
ledger.
So
just
I'm
gonna
do
a
real,
quick,
intro
to
hyper
ledger
and
then
we're
gonna
transition
over
to
AWS,
which
is
I'm
sure.

brought
most
of
you
here
today
but
I
did
actually
want
to
introduce
to
you
what
hyper
ledger
is,
and
it
is
a
consortium
and
it's
cross
sector
and
it's
cross-cutting
now
a
lot
of
people
think
oh,
it's
the
hyper
ledger
fabric
or
hyper
ledger
blockchain.
That's
that's
really
a
bit
of
a
misnomer,
because
hyper
lids
are
actually
shelters,
a
large
number
of
projects,
and
it
is
of
course,
part
of
the
Linux
Foundation.
It's
all
about
trying
to
build
a
sustainable
ecosystem
around
distributed,
ledger
technology,
and
so
it's
about
providing
tools.

It's
provide
about
providing
a
collaboration
space
and
it
is
die
hard,
dedicated
open-source,
for
example,
all
the
working
groups.
They
have
the
supply
chain
working
group,
the
social
impact
working
group
that
I
run.
You
don't
have
to
be
a
hyper
ledger.
Member.
You
just
have
to
show
up
it's
truly
open
source.
You
want
to
get
involved
with
committing
code
or
doing
a
bug.
Stomp
you
want
to
get
involved
with
making
the
documentation
better.
You
can
do
that,
there's
no
fees,
there's
no
cost
jump
in
and
do
it.

community
will
welcome
you
and
I
really
like
that
ethos.
I
mean
I
come
from
an
open-source
background,
so
this
works
for
me
now.
What
kind
of
scale
does
hyper
ledger
have?
Well,
the
numbers
are
pretty
good.
It's
been
around
two
years.
We
have
more
than
88,000
commits
at
this
point
in
time.
There
are
five
different
tools
that
are
released.
There
are
five
different
frameworks
that
are
sheltered.
Like
I
said,
there's
a
number
of
different
projects.
There
are
two
1.0
production
releases,
but
as
of
last
week,
there
are
three
1.0
production
releases.

More
than
250
members,
nine
community
working
groups,
I
think
there's
now
ten
with
the
social
impact
working
group.
We
just
spun
up.
140
of
these
meetups
happen
around
the
world
and
there's
been
more
than
eleven
point
two
million
lines
of
code
committed
through
hyper
ledger,
so
we
actually
are
making
a
difference
with
these
projects.
So
one
of
the
things
that's
cool
about
hyper
ledger
is:
it
is
a
modular
approach.
The
idea
is
by
providing
a
shelter
an
umbrella
for
these
various
different
projects.

is
a
bit
confusing,
but
here's
the
deal
up
at
the
top
is
the
Linux
Foundation,
the
Linux
Foundation
shelters.
A
number
of
different
projects,
hyper
ledger
in
the
middle
is
one
of
them
over
here
we've
got
the
DLF
networking
automotive-grade
linux
nodejs,
for
those
of
you
who
know
no
js'
and
the
cognitive
computing
foundation,
underneath
the
hyper
ledger
umbrella.
Are
these
frameworks
burrow
fabric,
India,
Roja
and
sawtooth?
Burrow
is
a
smart
contracts.

Theory
and
virtual
machine
platform
fabric
in
fabric
Aroha
and
sawtooth
are
block
chains
of
various
different
flavors
and
India
is
a
decentralized
identity
scheme.
If
you're
familiar
with
self
sovereign
identity,
Indy
is
the
open
source
version
of
the
sovereign
foundation
platform
now
notice.
There
are
not
one,
not
two
but
three
different
blockchain
frameworks
under
hyper
ledger.
Hyper
ledger
actually
seeks
out
comprar
jex
that
will
be
competitive
with
each
other
and
tries
to
create
a
spirit
of
competition
between
those
right.
They
have
different
strengths
and
weaknesses.
There's
also
a
set
of
tools.

Caliper
is
a
performance
platform.
Cello
is
blockchain
as
a
service
deployment.
Tool.
Composer
is
a
way
to
model
and
build
networks.
Explorer
is
your
typical
block.
Explorer
and
quilt
is
a
ledger.
Interoperability
program
built
off
the
inner
ledger
protocol
from
ripple.
So
you
see
here
within
hyper
ledger:
we've
got
ripple,
touches,
we've
got
aetherium
touches,
we've
got
sovereign
identity
touches
as
well.
It's
really
a
very
open,
egalitarian
approach
to
an
ecosystem.

When
you
talk
about
how
the
projects
are
set
up,
what
they
do
is
they
provide
a
set
of
tools.
They
then
provide
a
team
of
volunteer
developers
and
then
it's
all
backed
up
by
the
resources
of
the
Linux
Foundation.
It
works
very
well
the
goals
to
create
enterprise-grade
software,
the
same
thing
they
did
for
linux
they're
trying
to
do
for
blockchain
technology.
It's
also
to
provide
a
community-driven
infrastructure
to
build
a
technical
community
which
they've
actually
been
quite
successful
at
to
educate
the
public
and
promote
the
communities.

is
a
hyper
letters
summit
every
year,
there's
also
a
public
hyper
ledger
event.
Every
year,
I
attended
the
members
summit
recently
and
was
pleasantly
surprised.
I,
don't
know
how
many
times
I
go
to
these
events
and
they're.
Basically
cheerleading.
You
know
opportunities
right,
everybody
sits
down
and
talks
about
how
great
their
platform
is
and
why
this
is
the
idea.
This
was
brilliant
because
everybody
sit
down
and
said
this
platforms
got
a
problem.

how
we
should
approach
it
here,
the
different
approach-
and
it
was
literally
a
debate
about
how
to
make
these
products
better
and
it
was
super
refreshing
to
see-
and
that's
really,
the
sort
of
you
know,
environment
that
makes
hyper
Ledger's
something
I'm
excited
about.
So,

deploying
blockchain
applications

Actually,
you
know
the
whole
humanitarian
aid
and
development
space
has
been
really
slow
to
come
to
the
table,
and
part
of
the
reason
is
is
because
you
know
we're
sponsored
by
donor
monies,
and
so
that
means,
to
a
certain
extent,
we're
trustees
for
those
funds
and
no
donor
wants
to
hear.
Oh
they've
tried
something
and
failed.

Why
didn't
you
use
an
established
technology
instead
of
going
off
on
this?
You
know
shiny
new
thing,
so
it
makes
it
really
hard
for
us
to
innovate
or
to
invest
money
in
major
infrastructure,
because
donors
tend
to
be
reluctant
about
that.
Mercy
Corps
is
in
a
fortunate
position.
My
position
and
a
number
of
my
peers
and
the
team
that
I'm
on
the
technology
for
development
team
were
actually
funded
by
Cisco.
Cisco
gave
us
ten
million
dollars
across
five
years
and
Cisco
wants
me
to
go
out
and
try
stuff.

They
want
me
to
go
out
and
break
things
literally
when
I
was
interviewing
for
the
position.
I
said
you
guys
want
me
to
try
new
and
emerging
technology
stuffs
gonna
fail.
You
know,
because
it's
gonna
that's
the
way
it
is
and
Cisco
said
we
don't
care
if
it
succeeds
or
it
fails.
All
we
care
about
is
whether
you
learn
something
donors
never
say
that
okay,
but
on
the
back
of
that,
we've
been
able
to
go
out
and
do
some
neat
things.

when
you
look
at
the
Aiden
development
space,
there
aren't
a
lot
of
people
who
actually
have
things
in
production.
Mercy
Corps
is
sort
of
at
the
front
of
the
pack,
along
with
World,
Vision,
heifer,
international
and
probably
I
would
say
Oxfam.
Those
are
really
the
leading
agencies.
But
it's
still
really
early
days.

it

depends

you
define
tech
company,
but
Amazon
apparently,
is
now
the
largest
tech
employer
in
Portland,
because
we
now
have
a
little
over
10,000
developers
here
and
it's
mostly
in
this
neighborhood.
So
what
used
to
be
the
Argonian
building
over
on
and
the
building
that
has
the
Radisson
on
the
bottom
half
is
mostly
Amazon
on
the
top
half
and
we
do
a
lot
of
development
here,
mostly
not
blockchain,
but
things
around
video
streaming.
The
Amazon
elemental
unit
is
headquartered
here
and
we
also
do
some
database
development
work.

to
watch
that
stuff
happening
so
I'm

see
the
world
and

the
kind
of
things
that
we're
about
to
roll

as
we
have
announced

so

blockchain
services
set
in
line

expecting
get
vertical
head
motion.

or
is
all
know
about
half
a
year
ago
and
like
that
which
usually
around
or
again
means
you're
using
certain
herbs
that
are
perfectly
legal
for
for
personal
use.

all

so
a
huge
amount
of
hype
right.
You
know
if
you're
familiar
the
Gartner
hype
cycle
right
new
technologies,
you
get
a
lot
of
height,
then
you
get
the
trough
of
disappointment.
Did
you
get
up
to
the
plateau
of
productivity?
I've
been
doing
this
stuff
for
thirty.
Thirty-One
years
ago,
I
started
as
IT
operations
director
at
Johnson,
Space
Center
in
Houston,
so
I've
been
doing
IT
for
thirty-one
years.

have
never
seen
a
technology
hype
more
and
drop
off
faster
than
blockchain
right,
and
we
all
know
why
it's
cost
a
Bitcoin
right
and
everyone
associated
with
Bitcoin
and
now
that
we've
gotten
past
that
or
started
to
get
to
people
actually
using
it.
Interestingly,
so
at
Amazon
we,
you
know,
there's
a
lot
of
web
services
and
about
95
percent
of
what
we
do
is
customer
demand.
Now
we're
constantly
you
know
trying
to
find
out
what
our
customers
are.
Looking
for.

What's
the
other
five
percent,
mostly
security
stuff,
you
know
the
things
that
you
just
have
to
do
to
operate
the
business,
so
we
started
having
customers
really
ask
us
a
lot
about
blockchain
right
about
a
year
and
a
half
ago,
I
started
looking
about
okay.
What
are
the
things
they're
doing?
What
can
we
do
to
make
lock
chain
easier
and
turned
out?
We
had
two
kind
of
big
sets
of
use
cases.
So
one
was
they
wanted
the
ledger.

They
wanted
the
immutability,
but
they
didn't
really
want
a
blockchain.
They
wanted
centralized
trust,
so
I
don't
want
to
deal
with
like
51%
issues
or
organizing
a
community.
I
just
want
a
really
fast
immutable
database.
So
so
who
are
we
hearing
about
that?
We're
hearing
a
lot
of
stuff
in
healthcare
manufacturers,
governments,
particularly
around
vehicle
management
and
registration,
so
DMV
departments,
HR
Payroll
financial
transactions,
the
usual
people
who
are
afraid
of
truly
open
source
because
they
want
somebody
they
can
sue,
which
is
kind
of
silly,
but
that
drives
people's
reactions
sometimes.

But
then
we
had
a
totally
different
set
of
use
cases
where
they
want
the
decentralized
trust
right.
So
we're
hearing
this
a
lot
in
financial
institutions
for
peace,
lone
trenches
or
settlement
of
payments,
supplier
distributor
chains
in
businesses,
mortgage
lending,
a
lot
of
stuff
in
retail,
especially
around
customer
rewards
and
being
able
to
easily
set
up
reward
networks
across
multiple
vendors
or
multiple
industries.
So
it's
all
sound
familiar
because
this
is
a
lot
of
what
we're
seeing
development
hyper
ledger.
Fourth,
so
ok,
so
we
said:
ok,
great
we've
got
two
separate
needs.

How
are
we
gonna
deal
with
that?
So
we
announced
two
services,
so
one
of
the
services
I
find
this
amusing.
This
quantum
ledger
database,
so
it's
nothing
to
do
with
quantum
computing.
We've
actually
had
this
service
for
12
years.
We
wrote
this
in
2007,
it's
just.
We
don't
use
it
internally.
We
never
had
a
customer
need
for
this
service
until
people
started
talking
about
blockchain
and
said:
okay,
I
want
a
blockchain,
that's
not
a
blockchain.
I
want
a
blockchain,
but
I
want
someone
else
to
run
it
so
internally.

We
use
this
for
a
lot
of
things.
For
example,
this
is,
if
you
ever
used
the
s3,
simple
storage
service,
you
can
turn
on
versioning,
so
it'll
keep
immutable
copies
of
everything
you've
ever
done.
This
is
the
thing
that
keeps
that
immutable
set.
If
you
ever
shopped
at
amazon.com,
you
might
notice
you
can
pull
up
every
receipt
and
everything
you've
ever
bought
ever
on
that
account
get
stored
in
the
system.

So
we've
had
this
sitting
around
I'm,
even
using
internally
pretty
widely,
but
we
really
never
had
any
customers
asked
for
it
until
about
a
year
ago.
So
we
announced
this.
It's
some
preview
today.
What
is
preview?
It's
an
open
beta
so
at
the
end
of
this
I'll
give
you
the
link
to
sign
up
for
it.
If
you
want
to
play
with
it,
I
will
be
launching
this
in
the
next
month
or
two,
but
the
idea
is
this
is
an
immutable
ledger
that
is
cryptographically,
verifiable
and
transparent,
but
not
open
source.
It's
closed
source
belongs
Amazon.

run
it,
we
own
it.
You
can
sue
us
if
you're

happy
with
it.
Like
you
know
all
the
normal
commercial
stuff

don't
think
that
this
is
as
interesting
as
managed
blockchain,
because
when
we
look
at

people
want
to
use

what
are
the
challenges
with
using
blockchain?
Well,
the
number

clearly
overhyping
blockchain
is
not
so
what
I'm
gonna

is
spend
just
a
couple
of
minutes
talking
about
the
business
side
and
then
the
rest
talking
about
the
technical
side.
So
here's
what
we're
seeing
when
we
look
around.
Obviously
we
talk
to
a
lot
of
VCS
and
look
what
they
want
to
put
their
money,
because
that
tends
to
influence
what's
happening
so
in
the
2018
of
the
top
50
VC
deals
in
the
world,
eight
of
them
were
clearly
blockchain.
Another
seven
were
partially
blocked
chain.
That's
a
big
deal
right.

We're
talking
four
billion
dollars
put
into
this
just
last
year.
Out
of
about
six
billion
about
two
thousand
VG,
VCS
or
angels
have
actually
put
something
into
it.
So,
okay,
so
there's
more
than
hype.
When
you
know
these,
are
these
people
don't
give
out
money
because
angel
this
kind
of
false
right
angels
help
you,
because
it's
the
right
thing
to
do
right?
Angel
investors
help
you
because
they'll
think
they'll
get
more
money
back
later,
but
I
guess
demon
investor
wouldn't
have
the
right
ring
to
it.

If
we,
if
we
use
that
term
and
we've
got
a
pretty
good
ecosystem
so
at
the
top
are
a
collection
of
VC
firms
that
are
explicitly
funding
blockchain
that
were
set
up
either
as
blockchain
venture
capitalist
firms
or
are
spin-offs
from
other
VC
firms
that
are
pointing
directly
at
the
blockchain
space
and
I
got
to
tell
you
when
I
talk
to
these
guys.
They
say:
what's
your
biggest
challenge
a
we
can't
find
enough
people
to
invest
it.

But
you
know
we've
got
we're
starting
to
develop
a
real
ecosystem
of
actual
well,
you
might
call
blockchain
infrastructure
companies
right
and
people
are
do
things
not
just
coinbase
around
the
crypto
currency,
but
you
know
interesting
services
that
you
will
need
to
make
this
stuff
work
and
that's
what
I'm
seeing
a
lot
of
the
startup
work
the
so
this
is
I
SEOs.
So
there
was
sixty
and
a
half
billion
dollars
of
icos
last
year
and
70%
are
losing
money,
so
I
SEOs
are
dead,
no
one's
doing
an
IC
o----
anymore.

This
year's
equivalent
is
the
securitized
and
offering
the
differ
between
an
ICO
and
an
sto
is
an
sto.
The
tokens
are
actually
backed
by
something
right.
There's
money
there:
it's
not
a
pretty
piece
of
paper:
it's
not
a
totally
floating
thing
like
that
coin.
There's
something
behind
it!
Compute
power
dollars,
gold,
bullion!
Something
so
they're
registered
and
accredited
investors
like
an
IPO
in
the
US.
You
can't
invest
in
this
unless
you
meet
the
accredited
investor
requirement,
similar
to
investing
in
startups.
Those
rules
have
gotten
a
little
looser
right.

Things
like
Kickstarter
is
legal
now,
where
it
wasn't
a
few
years
ago,
but
the
major
investment
you
still
have
to
show.
You
have
a
certain
amount
of
income
that
you
know
if
I
put
a
hundred
K
into
it,
I
can
afford
to
lose
that
hundred
K
and
not
be
living
on
the
street
and
all
the
other
sort
of
things
that
go
with
that.
So
and
the
one
hand
that's
slowing
investment
a
little.
On
the
other
hand,
it's
kind
of
focusing
it
in
you
know
realistic
things.
I
mean
I.

There
was
an
IPO
last
year
that
was
a
crypto
coin
based
on
dental
services,
so
yeah.
How
do
they
make
waste
like
a
half
a
million
dollars?
I
think
they'd
raise
money
on
that.
I
was
looking
at
that
and
it
it
IPO
doubt
and
I
think
ten
dollars
a
credit
and
those
are
trading
for
less
than
a
penny
now.
So
those
things
have,
you
know,
just
collapsed
so
when
we
get
to
reality,
this
is
also
interesting.

So
this
is
asking
global
2000
companies,
how
much
investment
will
you
make
in
the
next
year
and
this
survey
was
done
last
December.
So
it's
interesting
that
16
percent
of
the
global
2000
said
we're
gonna
put
at
least
ten
million
dollars
into
this
now.
I
know
this
is
a
little
hard
to
read,
but
here's
what
I
find
really
interesting.
This
is
the
US
column,
so
sixteen
percent,
so
essentially
the
fortune
500
said
we're
not
doing
anything
and
thirteen
percent
said
more
than
10
million.
Twelve
percent
said
one
to
ten
million.
This
is
the
China
column.

Nobody
said
we're
not
doing
anything,
we're
starting
to
see
a
lot
more
investment
blockchain
in
Asia
and
specifically
China
India
and
Southeast
Asia.
Now.
Why
is
that?
Well,
there's
a
cynical
answer
and
there's
an
optimistic
answer.
The
optimistic
answer,
the
one
that
the
Chinese
will
say,
is
because
we're
interested
in
these
new
technologies
and
we're
going
to
lead
the
world,
and
the
cynical
answer
is
when
you
can't
trust
the
government
and
the
regulation
and
the
money
to
be
worth
it.

growth

percent

throw
it

So
how
do

if

conversation
recently

the
CEO
and
CTO
at
Daimler
in
Stuttgart
of
daimler-benz,
and
that's
a
weird
because
their
CEO
as
an
electrical
engineering
doctorate?
So
he
actually
loves
talking
about
this
stuff,
and
you
know
they
were
saying
you
know
the
biggest
problem
we
have
at
Daimler
is
we
can
introduce
new
soft
when
we
do
a
software
upgrade.
It
takes
us
six
to
nine
months.
Tesla
is
doing
three
a
day.

we
build
much
better
cars
than
Tesla?
But
how
long
will
that
be
true?
As
long
as
we
have
that
kind
of
a
difference
they
see
blockchain
as
part
of
the
solution,
they

aren't
sure
how

heard

McDonald's
is
really
investing
in
the
whole
hyper
ledger
fabric
in
order
to
be
the
basis
of
how
they
manage
inventory
and
help
what
they
call
you
don't

franchisees
at
McDonald's.
You
have
owner
operators
so
to
help
owner
operators
directly
trade
with
each
other
right,
I'm,
an
owner
and
I
miscalculated.
My
inventory
and
I
have
too
many
drink
cups.
Mcdonald's
doesn't
want
me
to
ship
those
back
to
Chicago.

It's
interesting
to
watch,
because
technology
is
changing
McDonald's
because
they
did
the
deal
with
uber
for
delivery,
radical
change
and
the
business
pattern.
I
was
out
there
in
Chicago
a
couple
of
weeks
ago,
and
we
were
looking
at
this
anomaly
that
you
had
much
more
business
between
10:00
p.m.
and
1:00
a.m.
in
the
Pacific
region
and
in
Colorado
and
I
had
to
explain
to
them.
I
think
I
know
why
you
have
a
lot
of
midnight
munchies
in
these
particular
states,
so
that
was
a
bit
of
an
epiphany
because
we
looked
at
it.

So
big
things
we're
seeing
around
regulatory
tech
money
for
the
unbanked
right,
I
was
recently
in
Philippines.
Philippines
has
a
hundred
and
ten
million
people
about
50
million
of
them
have
an
income
above
fifteen
thousand
dollars
a
year,
which
relatively
it's
a
lot
more
money
there
than
it
is
here,
but
that's
enough
money
to
start
doing
banking
right,
that's
and
start.
You
know
having
some
way
to
move
your
money
around
electronically.
Very
few
of
them
have
a
bank
account
it's
very
hard
and
there's
not
a
lot
of
bank
branches
there.

If
you're,
not
in
Manila,
you
know
it
might
take
all
day
to
get
to
a
bank
branch.
This
is
the
kind
of
place
we'll
start
seeing
the
development
quickly,
a
blockchain
based
payment
systems
and
we're
already
there
rolling
out
blockchain
based
remittance
systems,
there's
more
than
10
million
Filipinos
who
are
working
somewhere
else
in
the
world.
We
want
to
use
blockchain
to
send
money
home
because
when
you
use
Western
Union,
they
take
14
percent.

are
some
of
the
ones
that
we're
working

pushing

want
to

sure

have
auditing
regulatory
compliance.
So
their
case
they
chose
not
the
blockchain,
but
the
Amazon
provided
ledger.
The

DB
Guardian,
on
the
other
hand,
yeah
Guardian
life
insurance
is
one
of
the
largest
life
insurers
in
in
both
UK
and
Southeast
Asia
and
they're.

What's
called
producers,
which
are
people
who
write
policies
and
be
able
to
rapidly
spread
this
to
unbanked
people
who
want
life
insurance
because,
let's
say
you
live
in
summer
like
Indonesia
and
you
don't
have
a
lot
of
money,
but
you
at
least
want
to
have
a
policy
that
you
can
pay
for
a
burial
if
somebody
in
your
family
or
when
somebody
in
your
family
passes
away,
because
sooner
or
later,
that
will
happen
that
is
really
hard
to
do
today.
This
is
making
it
easier,
so
the
kind
of
things
you're
seeing
your
started
to
see.

is
why
I'm
seeing
less
of
this
in
the
u.s.
right,
because
we
don't
have
that
shortage.
Well,
here's
a
problem
in
the
u.s..
This
is
one
of
the
biggest
companies
that
most
people
have
never
heard
of:
Depository
Trust,
Clearing,
House,
corporation
they're,
technically,
a
not-for-profit
consortium
of
the
major
exchanges
and
banks
in
the
US.
They
do
settlement
of
all
trades.
So
that's
about
three
trillion
dollars
a
day
bonds
and
about
one
trillion
dollars
a
day
of
equities
on
a
normal
day
on
a
bad
day.

It's
much
higher
right
because,
because,
when
you
see
the
stock
trading
go
up,
it's
never
because
of
good
news.
It's
you
know
some.
You
know
italy
has
defaulted
on
their
debt
and
all
of
a
sudden,
you
know
you've
got

times
the
normal
bond
trading.
They
really
want
to
move
this
onto
a
blockchain,
because
what
they
do
now
is
too
expensive,
and
today
every
bond
that's
traded
in
the
u.s.,
gets
settled
and
pushed
manually
through
either
JP,
Morgan,
Chase
or
Bank
of
New
York
that
costs
money
with
blockchain
we've
already
found.

can
do
this
ten
times
cheaper
and
we're
starting
to
do
it
now.
So
there
are
options
to
start
doing
equity
settlement
and
coming
soon
bond
settlement
through
blockchain
technologies,
and
it
is
hyper
ledger
fabric.
This
is
live
today
and
they
happen
to
be
on
AWS,
because
one
of
the
great
things
about
being
on
the
cloud
is,
if
you're,
normally
at
this
level
and
all
of
a
sudden
you're
at
this
level,
it's
there
right
and
then
the
next
day,
when
it
drops
back
to
this
level,
you're
only
paying
for
it
you're
using.

elasticity
is
one
of
the
reasons
that
the
cloud
makes
sense
for
blockchain
in
these

environments

applications
for

in
the
regulatory
space,
while

is
building
out
a
theory
on
applications
in
this
world,
so
these
are
kinda.

this
is

These
are
not
VC
companies

These
are
the
people,
have
real
money.

convinced
you
successfully
that
there's
something
real
going
on

the

the

really

philanthropy

anti-bullying

my
wife

sit
on
her

for
Amazon
I've
only
been

but
I've,
been
with
about
twenty
with
Mackenzie
and
she's
awesome,

good
for
I'm
interested
to
see
what
she'll

billion
dollar
bank
account
that
she
now
has
all

Let's
jump
into
the
tech
stuff,
all
right,
I,
don't
think.
I
need
to
explain
to
you
that
business
networks
are
complex,
right
and
blockchain
is
trying
to
adjust
that
and
it
builds
trust
in
a
network.

we're
trying
to
eliminate
the
need
for
central
authority
with
distributed,
ledger
consensus
mechanism
and
start
smart
contracts.
Now,
when
I
boil
all
the
hype
away,
those
are
the
only
three
things
that
actually
matter
in
a
blockchain
right
from
a
business
point
of
view,
what
what
am
I
getting
out
of
it,
I
shouldn't,
say:
business
cuz,
you
know
we
probably
Mercy
Corps
are
in
a
business,
but
they
have
a
mission.

from
a
mission
point
of
view,
whether
your
mission
is
to
make
money
or
to
help
people
or
to
serve
citizens
or
or
you're
a
Bond
villain
and
your
mission
is
world
domination
whatever.
It
is.
The
reason
you
care
about
this
is
you're
interested
in
distributed,
ledger
consensus
and
smart
contracts.
So
fundamentally,
blockchain
uses
a
ledger
database.
So
I
made
an
immutability
joke
as
we
passed
the
pins

Does
everybody
know
what
that
means
all

So
not
everyone
is
nodding.
When
you
write
something
in
the
blockchain,
it
can
never
be
deleted.

can
correct
it

my

is

sort

it

kept

the
current
of
the

a
payment

do
goes
into
the
ledger,
but
usually
I'm,
not
interested
in
the
payments.
I
did
last
July
I'm
interested
in
my
current
balance.
Right,
that's
going
to
be
materialized
up
in
the
current,
so
I
can
pull
my
balance
back
and
you
know
100
mil
or
100
microseconds.

But
if
I
want
to
go
back
and
say,
show
me
every
transaction
made
in
July
that
will
be
milliseconds
or
tens
of
milliseconds
depending
how
big
they
are
usually
an
acceptable
piece
to
do.
I
need
to
stop
kicking
this
table

then
the
consensus
mechanism,
of
course,
is
how
am
I
going
to
go
across
and
get
agreement
now.

There's
a
whole
bunch
of
things
that
come
in
with
this
one
is
Byzantine
fault,
tolerance,
I,
love
that
tool
that
term,
because,
if
you're
familiar
with
the
Byzantine
Empire,
it
was
an
empire
built
and
everyone
trying
to
stab
each
other
in
the
back,
so
Byzantine
fault,
tolerance
is
assuming
that
everyone
else
in
the
network
is
trying
to
cheat

How
do
I
create
a
fault,
tolerance
environment
so
that
we're
always

handing
things
across

ways

we
can't
hit
each
other
in
the
back,
which
is
a
horrible
way
to
look
at
the
world.

makes
you

miserable

it's
an
excellent
way
to
write
code
and
to
make
systems
actually
work,
and

you
have
issues
with
transaction
rate,
energy
consumption,
hardware,
requirements
and

So
to
give

advantages
of
doing
this
on
the
cloud
is
all
of
those
being
able
to
do.
Energy
consumption
and
hardware
is
kind
of
taken
care
of
for
you.
The
problem
with
transaction
rate
is
you're
tied
to
the
slowest
unit
and
the
trust
mechanism
global
aetherium
network
and
can
handle
three
transactions
per.
Second,
that's
not
a
lot.

you

enough
to,
like
you
know,
run
the
three
trillion
dollars
of
bonds,
but
they
can
be
on
multiple
parallel
Ledger's,
so
we
can
make
those
things
work
now

starting

see

whole
idea
of
a
smart
contract
so
that
the
rules
are
embedded
in
the
app
it's
verified
execution,
the
app
rights
to
the
ledger,
one
of
the
challenges
we're
seeing
it's.

do
you
verify
that
your
smart
contract
is
written
correctly,
because
the
contract
itself
is
immutable?

everyone
understand
the
different

public
network
and
a
permission
network

not
everyone
saw
it

of

that
that

when
we
do

a
public
network
anyone

the

some

cryptocurrency

cryptographically
verified
by

sha-256
hash,

complete
contents

the
ledger,

byte

hash
doesn't
match
anymore.

breaks
the
code,

back

invalid

the
rest
of
the
peer
networks
to

a

to

problem

the
only
time
we
write
something
ourselves
is
when
there
was
nothing
open-source
to
use.
So
we
do
have
non
open-source
databases
like
DynamoDB,
because
when
we
created
it
there
were
no
key
value
databases
to
use
and
that
one's
kind
of
an
ironic
one.
If
you've
never
heard
of
DynamoDB
it's
a
scalable
key
value
database.
We
wrote
it
for
internal
use.
We
wrote
a
paper
on
it,
Facebook
said:
hey
can.

you
sell
that
to
us?
We
said
no,
it's
not
really
for
sale,
but
here's
how
we
wrote
it
and
then
Facebook
we're
at
their
own
version
of
that
and
called
it
Cassandra.
So
our
close
source
accidentally
created
the
major
open
source
key
value
database
going
that
way.
But
you
know
if
we
were
doing
that
today,
we
wouldn't
write
it
ourselves.
We
base
it
on
Cassandra,
but
today
that
would
require
a
time
machine,
creating
a
paradox
loop
and
that
would
destroy
the
universe.
So
you
know
we
don't
on
earth.

found
that

and
the
Linux
Foundation
classes
out
there
there's
about
3

them
right

took
the
Solutions
Architect
course
is
challenging,

doable
easily
and

those

believe
these
certifications.
The
blockchain
training
Alliance
seems
to
be
one
of
the
more
recognized
and
up-and-coming
training
organizations
in
the
blockchain
space.
So
they
should
be.
You
know
these.
These
certifications
should
mean
something
theoretically,
I
think
more
of
us
that
do
them
the
more
that
they
will
mean.

got
a
new
one
out
there
with
a
guy
named
Luciano
from
the
University
of
Utah
who's,
a
data
scientists,
and
he
just
he
just
put
out
some
training
around
that
blockchain
and
data
science,
very
good
as
well,
the
guys
extremely
smart.
So
anyway,
two
of
these
to
give
away
they're,
typically
out
accidentally
like
say
a
couple
hundred
two
or
three
hundred
dollars
to
do
these.
