Security monitoring of Hyperledger Fabric networks requires ingesting and aggregating ledger, log, and metric data from many sources. It can be a challenge to correlate this data with system and network data to alert on indicators of suspicious behavior. Splunk, a Hyperledger member company, will discuss how to collect and act on this data to minimize downtime and reduce the meantime to detect and respond to incidents. Learn about the current Hyperledger Fabric threat landscape and see a real-world example of how to detect a Denial of Service attack.

The Poisoned Well, Supply Chain Security, Open Source and Hyperledger - Vipin Bharathan, dlt.nyc
A software supply chain attack happens when a malicious party modifies any part of a software development stack to compromise a target down the chain. Any user of the target can be breached using the modifications in order to attack the system directly or to deliver a malicious payload. The recently well-publicized Solar winds hack has brought this vulnerability into focus. A vulnerability that has gained in potency and reach due to widespread use of COTS and COSS software. This talk starts by covering the history of such attacks as well as the types and the lead actors in the attacks. Open source software is crucial in the software ecosystem. The openness of FOSS is leveraged by supply chain attackers. The talk is aimed at raising awareness of supply chain vulnerability in open source development. Some mitigation measures are discussed, including applicability to Hyperledger.

Hyperledger Fabric Security Monitoring based on Hyperledger Explorer - Benedikt Putz & Fabian Böhm, University of Regensburg
Hyperledger Fabric is increasingly being deployed in production environments by many users, as evident from the many successful Hyperledger use cases. Thus it becomes paramount to detect attempts at attacking them. Our research focuses on monitoring Hyperledger Fabric for ongoing attacks and threats. We chose the Hyperledger Explorer project instead of a SIEM solution, since it offers a good starting point for data analytics with Hyperledger Fabric. For this purpose we extend Explorer with additional data collection and security monitoring features, while contributing bug fixes upstream. The bulk of our development work focused on developing appropriate visualizations for security experts to aid them in detecting attacks. Our talk will focus on the development of these visualizations and the technical challenges we faced with data sources and integration of these Hyperledger projects.

Supply Chain Security – Tackling Compliance, Fraud and Counterfeiting - Mohan Venkatamaran & Isaac Kunkel, Chainyard
Supply Chain Security is front and center in today’s world. Companies are concerned about theft of intellectual property, continuity of supply chains and ensuring that the reputation and quality of their products is not compromised. Consumers on the other hand want assurance that the products they purchase are genuine, meet quality standards and are ethically manufactured. Specific work in area of supply chain security will be discussed as follows: • “Trust Your Supplier” that introduces decentralization, trust and transparency in the supplier qualification process • Asset Track and Trace initiative for manufactured assets for a major company • Secure sharing framework for sensitive documents between business partners • Use of smart tags, IoT and digital identity for securing the shipments of high value products • “Proof of Authenticity” technology for retail products

Transparency, Security and Auditability of Critical Reporting Chains with Blockchain - Nikolaos Saklampanakis & Ece Kubilay, Fujitsu
E. Kubilay and N. Saklampanakis will present a joint project of Fujitsu and Hexagon that brings together IoT, AI , security monitoring and HL-Fabric for handling critical security events. Handling security incidents, results in reporting chains: The creation of an alarm, the context, the handling it receives, and finally the auditing process, are all rings of such a reporting chain. Critical security incidents might result increased monetary costs or even lead to life-threatening situations if not handled optimally. It is thus of utmost importance to ensure that the event is handled with the highest possible standards, and that the reporting chain depicts the truth in a transparent auditable manner. And these are exactly the challenges we address with Hyperledger Fabric. Join our session to get insights and lessons learned from building this project and enjoy a live demo.

While the benefits of IoT are unlimited, the reality is that the proliferation of blockchain based connected devices, systems and services that compose the IoT ecosystem has introduced risk directly into the physical world, blurring the border between virtual threats and utilities, devices and critical infrastructure. In this session, we will discuss how MPC can be used to enable every IoT device to have an embedded root of trust, while preserving the zero-knowledge proof of other devices’ data. Furthermore, we will examine a few use cases, some that can be associated with a public blockchain and some that are more common within the boundaries of a permissioned blockchain.

Blockchain, the distributed ledger technology (DLT) underlying bitcoin, is far more valuable than the currency it supports. As enterprises start to put distributed ledger technology into practice, it’s important to understand the security implications. We’ll look at public vs. private blockchains and lessons learned for enterprises moving to DLTs. We will walk through real life deployments of Blockchain solutions and discuss how Blockchain can both enhance security but also when built into traditional solutions requires traditional security measures. This talk will leave you with understanding how Blockchain does, and does not, change the security requirements for your enterprise. Then we’ll talk about Hyperledger’s new Bug Bounty program. Join us!
In this session you will:
• Learn that Blockchain is a tool, not a solution; we will define specific use cases
• Walk away with an understanding of private vs permissioned blockchains
• Develop a better understanding of the flexibility, security and regulations that will need to be met
• Get details on the Hyperledger Bug Bounty Program

Block to Basics – Hyperledger Key Management - Alex Rabke, Digital Asset Security, Unbound Tech
The foundation of any blockchain-based technology lies in the quality of the cryptography that underpins the ledger. More specifically, successful management of the blockchain private keys is critical to the success of any project using this technology. Typically, the private keys exist as a single point of failure for security and operational concerns. Join this session to learn the basics of traditional blockchain key management methods (including those implemented in Hyperledger-based architectures) and how they compare to more modern and sophisticated models such as those based on MPC (multi party computation). Session will include a live demo of key management interface for Hyperledger-based project workflow.

Achieving strong privacy and confidentiality on a blockchain can be a difficult thing to get right. In fact, it can even be difficult to map real-world privacy and confidentiality requirements into functional blockchain requirements. In this talk we discuss various aspects of cryptography, security modelling, and the techniques involved in different Hyperledger projects--including things like threshold signatures, SNARKs, security games, universally composable cryptography, the shared crypto-lib, Sawtooth's private data objects, and Fabric's channels--that enable us to build blockchains that have various privacy and confidentiality properties. We will give an overview of what it means to be a "secure" blockchain with regards to privacy and confidentiality and explain the best practices towards achieving this.

Blockchain is fundamentally a technology that enables trust. Trust is much more than verification. It is a complex social system that underpins all of society. Understanding how blockchain distributes trust, how it shifts trust from people to technologies, and where it doesn't, is critical to understanding its security and usefulness.

Chaincode must meet high standards of quality and strict security specifications. Not satisfying these requirements impairs the whole system and can prevent reaching consensus among the peers in the network. Vulnerabilities, unintended behaviors, and system failures can violate such requirements and make entire systems running on top of Hyperledger Fabric unusable.
To address this problem, we identified nine security patterns for chaincode. Moreover, we implemented an automated static analyzer to identify and pinpoint these vulnerabilities. Our analyzer is publicly available at https://chaincode.chainsecurity.com/ and is free to use for non-commercial use. It is the first static analyzer implemented specifically for chaincode programs. In this talk, we discuss the vulnerability patterns and show how the static analyzer identifies them in Hyperledger Fabric chaincode.
