It’s a new decade in blockchain―enterprises have realized that it is crucial to collaborate with technology partners to accelerate their blockchain journeys and succeed with solutions across their ecosystems. There are many considerations and decisions to be made, and it can be challenging to discern what is relevant from the abundance of noise in blockchain. built
a
technology

Encryption

built

top

hardware
based
security
in
the
CPU
of
something
like
Intel
software
guard,
extensions
or
SGX,
and
inside
enclaves
we
can
take
applications
run
them
securely
and
one
of
the
applications
we
have
built
is
a
key
management
system
which
is
very
applicable
to
the
blockchain
platform,
because
keys
are
very
important
for
blockchain
and
I'll.
Talk
about
that

is

collection

business
groups.
Besides

data
center

intelligent
devices
group
as
one

the
large
suppliers
of
laptops
tablets
and
then

Motorola
phone.
As
you
know,
the
reason
I
bring
that
up
is
our
supply
chain,
therefore,
is
churning
out
for
devices
shipped
every
second.
So
it's
a
massive
supply
chain
that
we
have
across
the
country
and
then
so.

lot
of
value
in
using
blockchain
for
those
kind
of
improvements,
along
with
related
technologies
like
machine
learning
or
IOT,
and
edge
computing,
and
things
like
that.

we
have

we

but

think
that's
really
why
I'm
excited

with

focused

supply
chain,
but
we

lot

other

are
great,

great
use

sort

built-in
networks

consortium

to
be

the

we

actually

various
means
and

all
bringing

Intel
SGX

software
Gard
extensions.
It's
an
isolation,

isolated
portion
of
our
processors,
specifically
our
server
processors
that
can
help
make
block
chains
better.

helps
improve

security
on
an
mentioned
photonics
key
protection.
That's
a
great
example
of
that
it
can
help
improve
the
scalability
of
block
chains.

you'll,

using
sawtooth
with

consensus
mechanism
that
helps
build
a
large
number
of
nodes
on
your
network
and

then
it
can
also
help
with
data
privacy
and

IBM

built
a

methods

protecting

on
chain
and
off
chain
with
using
SGX
as
well.

are
we
here
together
today
and
and
it's
really
because
clients
are,
we
know
that
clients
are
going
through
a
supply
chain
transformation,
they're
changing
the
way
that
they
engage
with
their
current
supply
chain
partners,
and
a
lot
of
this
has
been
enabled
by
the
use
of
multi
party
systems
and
distributed
ledger
and
blockchain
and
similar
kinds
of
technology,
and
that's
actually
bringing
people
together
and
it's
bringing
companies
together.
That
perhaps
may
have
not
thought
of
working
together
before.

a
very
unique
if
you
will
catalyst
to
what
we're
seeing
today
and
the
the
other
that
we
should
all
realize
by
now
is
that
blockchain
is
a
team
sport.
It
does
involve
everybody
getting
together
and
driving
consensus
and
agreement
on
things,
and
this
is
why
we've
brought
here
today,
this
group
of
world-class
companies
that
are
actually
working
together
to
improve
things
and
I
think
we've
lost
our

actually

first
thing
we're
going

talk
about
is
the
challenges
and
understanding
that
so,
as
some
of
you
may
be
aware,
there
are
a
number
of
challenges
in
executing
first
of
all,
a
blockchain
implementation
and,
secondly,
a
transformation
or
a
digital
transformation.

In
our
case,
a
supply
chain
transformation
and
generally
those
challenges
are
broken
up
into
three
kinds.
There
are
technical
challenges,
of
course,
which
are
limitations,
for
example,
maybe
with
the
blockchain
platform
that
was
selected.
Maybe
it's
a
DevOps
issue.
It
could
be
an
infrastructure
issue
and
so
on.
There
are
functional
issues
which
impact
the
ability
to
deliver
a
desired
feature.
For
example
in
the
solution,
that's
being
constructed
and
oftentimes
functional
issues
are
driven
by
underlying
technical
issues
and
finally,
there's
also
business
issues
which
typically
are
involved
in
the
definition
of
the
strategy
of
the
group.

That's
getting
together
if
a
consortiums
being
foreign
making
sure
that
the
value
case
is
clear
and
so
on,
and
there
could
also
be
business
issues
or
business
impact
that
results
from
those
functional
and
technical
issues,
and
this
is
actually
something
that
all
of
us
looked
at
together
to
understand.
Where
are
the
issues
where
the
majority
of
the
issues
happening
in
supply,
chain
transformation
and
actually
together,
look
at
how
we
can
possibly
address
those
challenges?

encounter

working

clients,
specifically
in
a
supply
chain,
transformation
using
block
chain
sure.

they're
forming
those
consortiums

moving

They
need
to
figure
out
what
is
the
Minimum
Viable
ecosystem
that
they
need
to
be
able
to
have
as
a
starting
point
to
ensure
that
there's
value
for
all
of
the
players
and
that
it's
going
to
be
realistic.
And
that
is
a
challenge
in
trying
to
determine
who
those
members
from
the
supply
chain
are
going
to
be,
and
that's
going
to
be
a
little
different
with
each
industry
so
being
able
to
bring
those
things
together
and
then
I'll
layer.

a
more
difficult
starting

all,
is
it
really
a
blockchain

case
or
is
it?

define

one

able

satisfy

hybrid
cloud?
Actually,
we
didn't
have
a
pole
for
this,
but
how
many
people
here
actually
know
what
hybrid
cloud
is
just
raise
your
hand:

just
a
handful
of
people,
so
you
you
have
good
work
to
do
so.
Why
why?
What
is
hybrid
cloud
and
why
hybrid
cloud
is
a
good
infrastructure
pattern
for
blockchain
in
supply
chain.

the
infrastructure
space
has
been
under
transformation
itself
over
the
last.
You
know
ten
years,
if
you
would,
particularly
when
the
word
cloud
started
to
get
thrown
around
and
people
were
beginning
to
look
into
it.
It's
almost
like
a
beginner
soccer
team.
You
know
so
everybody
runs
where
the
ball
is.
Instead
of
keeping
their
position
and
the
reason
I
bring.
That
analogy
is
hybrid
cloud
is
sort
of
where
we
have
matured
to
after
this
decade
of
exploring
what
cloud
is,
and
the
reason
is
people
said
no,
no
I
want
to
be
in
control
of
everything.

In
my
own
data
centers,
that
was
the
code
traditionals
play.
The
second
play
was
cloud
was
coming
around.
So
then
that's
where
the
ball
was,
and
everybody
ran
to
the
cloud
and
I
even
heard
of
companies.
That
said,
that's
it
we're
closing
all
our
data
centers
and
we
are
going
100
percent
to
the
cloud.

The
reality,
of
course,
is
always
in
the
middle
and
so
we're
the
learning
over
the
last
decade
has
landed
us
is
that
there
are
things
I
want
to
control.
There
are
things
that
and
therefore
have
them
in
my
shop,
which
is
my
data
centers.
There
are
things
that
I've
been
asked
to
keep
in
my
data
shop,
so
I'm
thinking,
regulation,
I'm
thinking,
geo
and
regional
aspects.
There
would
also
be
then
security
and
privacy
aspects
that
may
drive
you
to
say.
You
know
what
my
secrets
are
stays
in
my
data
center.

Whatever
that
is,
it
could
be
data,
it
could
be
applications,
it
could
be
a
combination
thereof.
At
the
same
time,
though,
the
cloud
journey
taught
us
the
tastes
of
economies
of
scale.
So
the
way
the
people
have
landed
is
that
enterprises
are
thinking
about.
Now
is
what
are
the
things
where
I
can
actually
leverage
as
a
better
cost
model?

we
are
seeing
across
the
board,
whether
it's
small
companies,
medium
sized
large
in
a
large
company
like
ours
Lenovo,
is
itself
a
good
example
to
look
at
internally.
There
are
applications
we
consume
from
a
host
of
providers,
there
are
infrastructures
we
would
consume,
and
then
there
are
things
we
built
and
run
in
our
own
data
centers
and
we
are
doing
exactly
the
same
with
our
customers.
So
the
drivers
are
data,
gravity
or
data
governance
or
data
sovereignty.
How
do
you
where
who
owns
it?
Where
do
you
keep
it?

And
in
fact,
just
to
add
a
little
bit
of
color
to
that,
you
have
to
think
about.
You
know
if
you're
doing
a
a
supply
chain
transformation
with
blockchain.
First
of
all,
somebody
needs
to
agree
to
be
the
operator
of
the
solution
and,
and
secondly,
most
of
those
participants
are
gonna-
have
different
types
of
infrastructure
strategy
patterns.
Some
people
may
be
hundred
percent
public
cloud,
some
people
may
not,
some
people
may
be
somewhere
in
the
middle.
A
So
if
you're
building
a
solution
and
and
you're
forming
a
consortium,
you
have
to
be
able
to
accommodate
all
of
those
patterns,
and
this
is
why
hybrid
cloud
is
actually
the
the
right
pattern.
If
you
will
in
this
scenario,
because
you
need
to
be
able
to
bring
all
of
those
worlds
together
and
there's
different
frameworks
out
there.

And
one
thing
to
add
you
just
figured
my
mind
is
that
the
data
center
we
were
used
to
thinking
of
a
single
large,
huge
building,
brick
and
mortar.
Even
an
enterprise
data
center
today
is
not
that
it's
distributed.
There
are
lots
of
edge
locations
where
you
might
be
doing
business
and
therefore
it's
still
within
the
control
of
that
enterprise,
but
it's
it's
distributed
geographically
and
and
environmentally
and
so
on.
So
if
your
supply
chain
is
touching
all
those
points,
you
need
to
be
able
to
operate
in
that
right.

And
and
of
course,
we've
talked
about
infrastructure,
but
as
everybody
probably
realizes
it's,
not
just
that,
that
also
includes
DevOps
so
again,
who's
operating
the
solution.
Is
there
a
DevOps
pipeline
that
brings
everything
together
at
the
center?
Do
the
participants
have
their
own
DevOps
pipeline
to
push
whatever
it
is?
They
may
be
developing?
How
do
you
connect
that
together?
Do
you
have
an
integrated
testing
environment?
Do
you
have
a
staging
environment?
How
do
you
do
versioning
right?

So
there's
a
lot
of
of
things
that
need
to
be
thought
through
and
it's
exciting
to
see
that
some
people
in
the
audience
actually
recognize
that
so
we're
not
too
far
off
the
mark.
So
that
being
said,

privacy
and
confidentiality,
and
specifically,
what
Intel
is
doing
great.

privacy
and
blockchain.
This
challenge
has
been
around
since
the
dawn
of
blockchain
actually,
and
it
stems
from
the
simple
notion
of
validation,
nodes
on
a
blockchain
network
that
generally
need
access
to
transaction
data
in
order
to
do
their
job
in
order
to
assess
the
validity
of
a
transaction.
You
combine
that
with
bringing
peers
throughout
an
industry,
sometimes
competitors,
sometimes
customers
and
putting
them
on
the
common
infrastructure
and
people
get
concerned
necessarily
about
what's
happening
with
their
transaction
data,
and
you
can
see
it.
What
Intel
SGX
does
or
saw
for
guard
extensions
is.

Is
it
uses
this?
It
will
people
at
generally
using
Intel
SGX
and
a
couple
of
ways
to
improve.
There
are
privacy
solutions
for
their
block
chains,
one
is
there
they're
moving
transactions
off
chain
and
by
doing
so,
the
transactions
happen
in
private
off
the
chain,
and
you
can
use
Intel
SGX
to
sort
of
improve
the
integrity
of
the
link
to
the
off
chain
assets
and
the
integrity
of
the
results
that
come
back
from
those
off
chain.

Compute
assets,
the
other
is
on
chain
just
isolating
that
validation
process,
so
that
prying
eyes,
whether
they
be
a
electronic
software
routines
or
physical
hands,
arms
and
legs.
Trying
to
get
at
that
transaction
data
have
a
much
tougher
fight
to
get
into
that
isolated
portion
of
the
processor.
Those
two
techniques
and
I
can
actually
hand
it
over
to
Gary
and
he
can
elaborate
on
the
way
that
fabric
and
IBM
are
employing
this
technology.

know
one
of
the
areas
and
I
think
there
was
a
there's
a
talk
later
today.
If
it
was
later
today
right
at
five
o'clock,
I
knew
somebody
would
know
around
here.
So
you
know
we
looked
at
some
areas
of
you
know
different
therm
terms
of
encryption,
homomorphic
encryption,
all
those
fancy
crypto
stuff,
but
they
have
like
sort
of
you,
know,
performance
issues
and
that
technology
is
evolving.

But
with
you
know,
with
the
advent
of
SGX
the
ability
to
actually
run
from
the
fabric
world
right,
we
call
our
smart
contracts
chain
code,
so
the
ability
to
actually
execute
it's
kind
of
cool.
You
can
do
two
things
in
this
aspect
right
when
we
can
run
multiple
instances
of
the
chain
code
and
still
have
our
same
model,
but
the
bits
that
are
actually
executing
in
memory
are
actually
secret.
That's
what
the
software
guard
extensions
are.

So
you
can
kind
of
have
the
chain
code
running
everywhere,
but
the
data
itself
is
actually
kept
protected,
even
though
it's
running
on
you
know
common
machine.
So
that's
one
model
that
works
well.
They'll.
Tell
you
more
about
the
details
of
that
later.
Today,
the
other
model,
too,
is
there
some
times
where
you
know
people
say:
hey,
look
I,
don't
really
want
to
run
this
thing
on
every
node,
I
don't
need
to
as
Mike
was
saying
right.

So
not
only
can
we
call
it,
you
know
off
chain,
but
we
can
also
because
in
for
those
of
you
know,
fabric,
we
can
actually
reduce
the
number
of
people
who
need
to
endorse
the
transaction
down
to
a
small
limited
set,
because
the
code
has
actually
been
again
has
actually
been
a
test
that
you
actually
know
what
the
real
code
is.
It's
fully
trusted,
therefore,
I
only
need
to
execute
an
unlimited
number
of
machines
just
for
brazillian.

characteristics
that
we
had

within

fabric

The
reason
why
I
think
supply
chain
itself
is
a
great.

We've
always
had
b2b
networks,
whether
it
be
EDI.
So
there's
already
been
this
whole
concept
of
whether
you
want
to
call
them
consortio
or
not.
People
already
have
this
model
of
how
they're
gonna
connect
and
identify
with
partners
passing
documents
around.

So
from
that
perspective,
you
know,
fabric
was
really
designed
in
a
very
similar
sense,
so
I
think
it
fit
that
model.
Having
your
you
know,
identified
by
certificates,
having
multiple
organizations
and
then
on
the
I
think
on
the
private,
the
other
side,
I
say
we
made
in
a
fabrics
a
very
general
purpose
model
right,
so
we
can
support
any
data
model
you
want,
which
is
yeah,
has
its
goods
in
this
bad.
But
if
you
really
want
to
be
able
to
support
any
data
model,
you
know
where
fabrics
very,
very
good
at
that
right.

can
come
up
with
whatever
format
you
want,
whether
it's
JSON
your
existing
EDI,
any
transformations
gs1
whatever
name
the
three
letter
for
letter
acronym,
it's
very
easy
to
implement
those
models
and
I
think
the
third
one
was
people
really
liked.
I
think
will
be
better
off
once
we
can
use
things
like
SGX,
but
we
did
have
the
concept
of
channels
in
fabric
which
people
kind
of
liked
right.
So
we
had
the
combination
of
broadcasting
public
data,
that's
used
as
reference
stuff,
but
then
actually
being
able
to
isolate.

specific
parties
that
wanted
to
transact
together
down
to
their
own
channel,
so
it
was
kind
of
a
it
was
probably
well
does
not
I
mean
if
you
were
to
look
at
it.
We
didn't
build
it
specifically
for
a
supply
chain,
but
I
think
if
we
were
building
something
for
supply
chain,
we
would
have
ended
up
pretty
close
to.

it's
really
the
data
model
and
the
design
of
that
that
sharing
construct
that
I
think
it
fits
so
well
with
the
way
supply
chain
partners
interact
with
each
other.
So
that
being
said,
we're
gonna
move
over

to
us
about
why
key
management's
so
important.
What
fort
annex
is
doing
in
that
space.

also
need
to
manage
identities
for
all
the
entities
that
are
interacting
with
the
blockchain,
so
a
lot
of
BKI
comes
into
the
picture
certificate
management
and
then
edit
are
touched
upon
DevOps,
so
you're,
probably
trying
to
run
run
things
on
on
kubernetes
and
containers,
which
means
managing
the
secrets
that
get
injected
managing
the
keys
that
get
injected
into
the
certificates.
These
are
all
very
important
and
once
you're
going
into
enterprise
and
supply-chain
enterprises
require
the
key
management
system
to
be
really
secure.

as
I
just

these

didn't

legacy
to
deal
with,

we
built
it
from
scratch
and
it's
very
secure.

get
all
the
benefits
of
Intel
SGX
and
be
able
to
use
it
in
blockchain.
