Technology such as blockchain has the power to solve complex challenges and achieve improved supply chain traceability. In order to tap into this powerful technology, interoperability, enabled by robust data and transaction standards, are a must! introduce
themselves
and
talk
a
little
bit
about
what
they're
doing
in
blockchain,
but
I
just
wanted
to
set
the
stage
a
bit
around
what
it
is
that
we're
talking
about
today,
and
that
is
when
we
look
at
technologies
such
as
blockchain.
They
have
the
power
to
solve
complex
challenges
and
achieve
improved
supply
chain
traceability.

the
supply
chain,
such
as
the
food
industry,
have
made

progress,
leveraging
data
standards
to
support
food

and
product

use
cases,
and
so
we're
gonna
discuss
the
importance
of
standards
today
and

business
interoperability

accelerate
the
success
of
new
technologies
like
blockchain.
So
as
introduction,
my
name
is
rich
Meszaros
I'm,
a
managing
director
at
Accenture
in
our
blockchain
practice,
and
one
of
the
areas
that
I'm
focused
on
is
food.

within

helping
our
clients
be
able
to
leverage
technologies
like
blockchain
and
others
to
be
able
to
improve
improve
traceability
within
their
supply
chain.
So
what
I'd
like
to
do
is
kind
of
go
down
the
line
starting
with
Dave
here
and
ask
you
to
introduce
yourself,
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
your
role
and
then
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
your
experience
with
blockchain
for
supply,
chain
traceability
and
how
that
has
shaped
your
POV.

Cargill
is
a
food
and
agricultural
company
we're
one
of
the
largest
companies
in
the
world
that
no
one's
ever
heard
of
which
is
always
fun
to
introduce
ourselves
to
a
new
audience.
I
work
in
our
digital
labs
organization,
as
the
director
of
data
engineering
covering
a
bunch
of
different
spaces,
including
blockchain,
we're
car
girls
doing
a
lot
of
different
things
to
really
drive
innovation,
efficiencies
and
optimizations
across
our
food
and
egg
supply
chains
with
distributed
technology
and
other
types
of
technology,
but
more
like
irrelevantly.

I'm
Melanie
noose,
I
work
for
one
of
the
smallest
companies.
No
one's
ever
heard
of
gs1
Gon
is
a
global
standards.
Organization
were
primarily
known
for
standards
around
unique
identification
in
the
supply
chain,
most
famously
the
UPC
barcode
versions
of
the
UPC
barcode
are
scanned
six
billion
times
a
day
all
over
the
world.

So
while
we
are
small,
we're
mighty
and
we
are
involved
in
the
blockchain
journey,
I
leave
the
innovation
team
at
Jesus
when
US
we're
one
of
a
hundred
and
fourteen
country,
members
of
the
gs1
system,
and
our
job
is
to
help
companies
in
the
u.s.
implement
gs1
standards,
and
so
when
blockchain
started
entering
the
scene
as
I
mean
initially,
someone
told
me
it
would
replace
EDI.
So
we
figured
we
better
investigate
this,
because
our
install
base
in
the
US
have
300,000.

Members
is
heavily
invested
in
EDI
and
then
what
we
learned
is
blockchain
was
really
reinvigorating
discussions
around
data
sharing
and
data
sharing
out
levels
that
we
weren't
achieving
in
supply
chain
to
date.
So,
in
the
use
case,
traceability,
particularly
we've,
been
on
a
10-plus
your
journey
to
just
get
things
like
case
level,
traceability
as
product
moves
from
one
warehouse
to
another
and
in
some
categories
of
product
I
would
say
we
have
80,
plus
percent
and
in
others
20%
or
less
and
after
a
decade
of
work,
I
mean
standards
is
a
slog,
and
everybody
knows
that.

So
we
thought
if
we
could
get
ahead
of
the
discussion
on
blockchain,
that
we
could
actually
help
industry
rather
than
be
a
lagging
indicator.
And
so
we
immerse
ourselves
in
understanding
how
standards
and
distributed
ledger
technology
work
together.
The
gs1
system
is
essentially
a
distributed
system.
I
would
say
that
you
know
the
unique
numbers
that
you
put
on
products
and
cases
there's
a
portion
of
that
number
that
is
licensed
by
gs1,
but
the
rest
of
the
system
is
really
run
by
the
members
all
over
the
world.

So
we
felt
that
we
could
actually
build
on
the
notion
of
distributed,
and
so
food
traceability
and
our
work
with
the
panelists
here
was
one
of
the
focus
areas.
I
would
say
that
drug
traceability,
which
was
raised
this
morning
in
the
panel
pharmaceuticals,
getting
a
lot
of
focus
as
well,
and
we
have
standards
that
support
us
FDA
regulations
around
Pharma
traceability
as
well
as
unique
medical
device.

So
we
work
a
lot
across
a
lot
of
public
and
private
sectors
and
felt
that
it
was
appropriate
to
make
sure
that
standards
become
complementary
to
technology
like
blockchain,
and
there
was
a
lot
of
confusion
about
that
in
the
beginning.
So
I
think
three
years
into
the
journey
worked.
We've
actually
done
very
well
to
to
demonstrate
the
partnership
between
the
two.

my
name,
is
Sarah
banks,
I'm
a
managing
director,
my
role
at
Accenture
and
we're
professional
services
firm,
a
large
professional
services
firm
with
a
dedicated
focus
on
blockchain,
which
is
the
area
that
rich
comes
from.
My
focus
is
to
promote
technologies
like
blockchain,
to
try
to
solve
challenges
within
a
certain
segment
of
clients
that
we
refer
to
as
products
clients,
but
it's
basically
retail
consumer
products,
life
sciences,
industrial
equipment
and
automotive.
So
you
can
imagine
supply
chain
or
really
top
of
mind
for
all
those
clients
in
that
group.

for
us,
looking
at
the
opportunity
of
blockchain
has
been
of
keen
interest,
but
for
me
personally
on
the
journey
I
started
in
2016
looking
at
shipping
as
a
first
use
case,
so
we
came
out
with
a
partnership,
a
couple
of
clients
like
Coonan
Nagaland,
APL
that
we
went
through.
How
could
we
make
the
the
international
trade
process?

So
my
name
is
Patrick
I'm,
a
software
engineer
at
a
target
Corp
which,
for
those
of
you
who
may
not
be
familiar,
is
a
large
retailer
based
in
Minneapolis
just
down
the
street
from
Cargill.
For
the
past
couple
of
years,
we've
had
a
few
proof
of
concepts,
but
currently
we
have
two
initiatives.
The
first
of
those
is
consent,
source,
which
is
a
platform
built
on
hyper
ledger,
Sawtooth
that
aims
to
improve
the
tracking
and
auditability
of
factories
in
our
supply
chain.

So
for
things
like
a
factory,
is
certified
for
organic
cotton
and
the
history
of
that
certification.
If
it's
ever
been
revoked
things
along
that
line
and
then
also
we've
been
contributing
to
hyper
larger
grid
alongside
Cargill
and
gs1
as
well.
So
we've
had
a
couple
of
contributions
to
the
project
in
the
form
of
some
reference
movement,
ations
of
JSON
standards
such
as
product,
and,
most
recently,
we
had
a
PR
emerged
for
the
catalog
RFC,
so
yeah
I'm,
hoping
to
bring
a
little
bit
of
a
technical
perspective
to
the
battle.

questions

go

think
this
first
question
is
for
Patrick.
We
often
hear
that
blockchain
Ascan
is
called
a
team
sport.
So
why
is
it
important
for
partners
from
across
the
ecosystem
to
work
together
in
developing
these
technologies?

Some
from
a
technology
perspective,
I,
think
one
of
the
kind
of
cool
things
about
blockchain
is
that
the
technology
itself
kind
of
enforces
this
sort
of
new
paradigm
of
businesses
interoperating
with
each
other
to
be
a
little
more
concrete
about
that
when
you're
fighting
a
smart
contract
but
you're
essentially
doing
is
taking
a
piece
of
business
logic
and
you're,
making
the
head-on
into
something
executable
and
immutable.
But
before
you
can
get
to
that
point,
the
big
hurdle
is
figuring
out.
Just
what
that
data
looks
like
the
shape
of
that
model.

That
companies
have
is
a
lot
trickier
of
a
problem
so
to
the
original,
a
question
of
being
a
team
support.
In
order
to
really
open
up
those
walls
and
kind
of
get
all
the
benefits
of
the
blockchain
and
having
a
single
source
of
truth,
you
need
to
have
all
of
those
relevant
stakeholders
at
the
table
and
I.
Think,
luckily
for
us,
with
the
Grid
project
having
Jesus
Ones
involvements
a
lot
of
that
heavy
lifting
has
already
been
done
and
that
these
standards
are.

they
look
yard
so
I
mean
a
good.
You
know

30
years
before
I
was
born,
for
example,
so
a
lot
of
yeah.
A
lot
of
these
things
are
like
the
the
the
interesting
paradigm
is
the
model,
and
that,
like
the
way
that
the
companies
are
exchanging
data,
but
the
data
itself
isn't
the
type
of
data
that's
being
exchanged,
isn't
really
new
the
concepts
of
something
like
product
in
Jesus
1,
for
example.

That's
something
that
has
been
implemented
at
target
for
a
long
time
and
is
very
fleshed
out,
but
being
able
to
transmit
product
data
from
a
supplier
directly
to
target.
Rather
than
going
through
all
these
intermediaries
and
having
you
know
all
the
associated
complexity
with
that
is
what's
kind
of
interesting
and
novel
great.

thinks

the
importance

industry
partnerships

any
big
enterprise.

big
company
we've
been
through
generations
of
process,
honoring
cultures

drive

things

common
processed
data
and
technology.

how
we're

to
classify
them
right,
but,

all
kind
of
know
that
language,
the
language
of
business
between
organizations
being
that
so

anchoring

those
open
standards,
can
help
mediate
some
of

conflict

lot

respects,
a
it's,
how
we
already
operate
and
transact
and
in
many
ways
and
be
its
neutral,
it's
an
open
standard.
That's
like
collaboratively
generated
from
the
beginning,
and
so
you
know
that's
where
we
see
the
open
standards
and
Industry
partnerships
as
being
too
big
cornerstones
to
these
types
of
solutions
and.

our
experience
in
bringing
parties
together
outside
the
standard.

enterprise

that
the
old
adage
of
no

team

so
much

difficult

practice

theory

Think
one
of
the
things
that,
as
we
look
at
the
the
ecosystems
that
will
need
to
be
built
to
scale
one
of
the
concepts
that
you
know
we
can
look
at,
which
could
be
greater
good,
has
to
be
pervasive
and
understanding
that
you
know
it's.

all

still
think
that
there

some
chance

our
ability
to
communicate
that

get
the
buy-in
at
the
right
level
to
create
those
kind
of
partnerships

when
we've

the
context
of

answer
would
be
that
industry
should
tell
us
that
we
actually
been
working
on
that
for
about
three
years
now,
as
we
entered
into
blockchain.
One
of
the
big
questions
we
started
asking
mostly
the
technology
partners
is
what's
missing,
because
we've
had
an
event:
traceability,
instant
in
in
the
standard
since
2007
that
essentially
allowed
you
to
get
to
very
granular
levels
of
tracking.

the
point
you
Commission
or
manufacture
an
item
all
the
way
through
to
the
point
you
sell
or
dispense
that
item
and
then
I
would
say
over
the
past
few
years,
and
that
would
include
transformation,
so
complex
items
where
you
have
a
lot
of
ingredients
and
you're
aggregating
your
consolidated,

consolidating
and
transforming
things.
That
is
all
standardized.
If
you
can
believe
that
or
not,
and
then
there
are
identifiers
for
all
of
those
entities
and
locations
and
products
involved
in
that
exchange,
so
I
think
the
standards
are
there.

development
organizations
and
they're
by
nature,
set
up
to
accommodate
that
kind
of
request
from
community.
So
we
do
believe
that
foundationally,
for
what
we're
trying
to
achieve
with
traceability
of
the
standards

ready

support

question
then
becomes
what
part
of
this
is
standard
and
what
part
of
it
is
technology,
and
that's
where
I
think
a
lot
of
people
tend
to
get
confused
because
they
think
of
standards
and
blockchain
as
being
mutually
exclusive
when
in
fact,
I
think
they're
quite
quite
important
and
I'll
reserve.

key
part
of
that
is
doing
at
scale

for
a
retailer,
the
size
of

We
have
thousands
of
suppliers,
both
suppliers
internally
for
some
of
our
own
brands
and
suppliers
externally,

is
being
able
to
just
speak
the
same
language
as
those
different
suppliers.

the
industry

for
starters,
there's

three

stuff,

a
three-part

think
about

they

agile

principles

apply

you
think

need
to
solve
your
problem.

get

lot

feedback

pools

see
associated

and

think

very
important

we've
evolved
a
lot
in
terms
of
finding
use
cases
for
blockchain

we
came
from
a
point

hammer

looking
for
nails
on
which
we
can
use
this
hammer
to
apply

think
we're
really
shifting
toward.
Where
can
this
add
value
and

that
value

it's
a
blockchain

because,
typically,
when
you
think
about
supply
chain,
blockchain
in
and
of
itself
can
be
helpful,
but
it
can't
be
there
alone
in
terms
of
emerging
technologies,
but
I
think
the
hopefulness
to
get
really
to
the
question
of
value.
The
hopefulness
is
traditional
supply
chain
challenges,
things
that
get
monitored
is
service
level
inventory
carrying
cost.

Certainly,
there's
benefits
there
and
I
think
use
cases
lend
to
that,
but
other
opportunities
around
where
we've
seen
use
cases
recall
management
being
one,
and
it
was
cited
this
morning
and
in
the
great
panel
that
we
started
the
day
off
with,
but
also
even
brand
management,
so
the
conversations
were
having
with
chief
marketing
officers.
It's
so
interesting
to
me
that
the
majority
of
our
activity
right
now
is
shifting
to
that
level
of
the
organization
which
tells
you
like
wow.

conversation
on
blockchain,
which
is
what
we
had
two
years
ago,
is
now

to

suppliers

automating
what

opportunistic
time
