Welcome to the “Untold Stories behind the Hyperledger Community,” a monthly podcast in which we invite contributors from across the Hyperledger ecosystem to share about why they're using Hyperledger projects and why they are actively involved in the community. before
we

afj

work
you're

let's
answer
a
couple
questions
about
you,
both
starting
with
Baron.
When
did
you
first
get
interested
in
software
engineering
like
what
was
the
thing
were
you
when
I
want
to
do
that.

It
was
amazing
to
me
and
I
had
a
remote
control
and
again
it
didn't
do
anything
and
I
love
the
buttons
and
I
think
from
that
point
on
it.
It
was
something
to
do
with
computers
and
then
I
had
software
engineering
making
stuff
with
computers.
It
seemed
like
a
quite
natural
fit
for
me.
Also
a
speed
of
the
background.

Down
this
road
man,
I
wish
I
had
an
exciting
story
like
Baron's
house,
no
well,
I
I,
don't
know.
As
a
teenager
and
student
I
had
quite
a
messy
period,
I
guess
I
didn't
know
what
to
do
at
all.
So
at
some
point,
I
did
the
hotel
school
and
after
that
I
started
working
in
well
in
in
restaurants
and
Cafe
in
the
kitchens
and
after
a
year,
I
realized.
This
is
not
what
I
want
so
then
I
sort
of
randomly
picked
from
a
long
list
of
of
studies.

could
do
and
I
ended
up
in
electrical
engineering
started
doing
that
was
terrible
at
the
mathematics
but
did
discover
software
engineering
there
and
that
I
was
actually
quite
good
at
it,
which
frustrates
my
mom,
because
my
mom
is
a
software
engineer
as
well,
and
she
is
all
my
life
she
has
told
me.
You
should
do
this
and
I
already
said
no
yeah.
So
what
comes
around
comes
back
around
but
anyway,
that
is
yeah.
So
through
electrical
engineering,
I
discovered
software.

first
oh
well
I,
multiple
I,
think,
probably
because,
through
my
electrical
engineering,
a
year
of

my
studies,
I

worked
with
Arduino
I,
don't
know
if
that

age,
yeah
known
to
everyone,
but
it's

project.

knew
that
I
wanted

computers

early
on,

quite

lazy
kid
in
high
school,

first
project,

python

start

college.

anything
before
that
was
just
waiting
to
go
to
college
and
then
start
doing
it
from
there

us,
it

mainly
been
everything
actually,
we've
been

been
scrolling

issues
helping
people
there,
we've
been
in
the
Discord.
There
are
always
there

issues,
there's
always
something

needing
help
to

get
started,
mainly
also,
of
course,
been
maintaining
the
framework
we've
been
programming
in
it.
We've
been
adding
features
out
of
like
personal
interest
out
of
like
for
clients
that
need
a
specific
feature
and
we've
been
adding
it
to
the
framework.

we've
been
spending
quite
a
bit
of
time
on
that
part,
so
we
we
don't
actually
have
to
help
everyone,
because
it's
supposed
to
just
work,
which
is,
has
been
one
of
our
main
goals
with
with
afj
that
it
just
works,
which
it's
been
going
quite
well,
we've
gotten
quite
a
bit
of
compliments
about
it,
but
I
mean
we're
still
running
into
some
like
build
issues.
Of
course,.

a
lot
of
these
communities
also
have
a
Discord,

Channel
or
Discord
server,
where
you
can
ask
questions
and
usually
can
talk
to
well
yeah,
the
maintainers
or
the
the
contributors
to
the
project.

exactly

we
do
in
their
experiment:
JavaScript
as
well
and
then

I
think
from
there.
It
really
probably
depends
on
the
the
particular
project
we
have
working
group
calls,
because
this
is
not
just
an
open
source
project
made
by
one
person
but
really

Community
Driven
project.

we
discuss
contributions,

look
at
physical
identity
like
passports,
you
get
a
password,
that's
a
physical
document.

you
carry
with
you,

control
it.
You
decide
who
you
show
it

not

show

digital
Identity

digital
information

general
is
easily
modified,
copied
exchanged

so
that
same
model
is
way
harder
to

achieve,
because
if
you
look
at,

instance,
a
passport
it
has
kind

security
features,
that's

we
call
them.

are
the

little
shiny
things
on
your
passport
and

weird

the
background,
those
security
features
are:

there
to
make
it
very
hard
to
reproduce
or
to
counterfeit
and
that
in
digital

digital

digital
information,

doesn't
really
exist
normally,
so
we
ended
up
in
in
a
digital
world
to
say
you
know
what
we're

not
going
to
do

not
going
to
use
that
same
model.
Instead,
we
will
rely
on
other
trusted
parties
to
store
that
information
for
us.

instance,
a
bank
usually
has
a
a
pretty
thorough
verification
process
before
you
can
enroll
or
open
the
bank
account
in
that
bank,
so
they
do
a
certain
verification
process
and
because
that
decentralized
nature
which
we
can

we
see
in
physical
identity,
it's
so
hard
to
reproduce
digitally
these
yeah.
These
Banks
offer
services
kyc
Services,
where
they
can
tell,
but
basically
other
people
ask
hey.
Can
you
give
me
some
information
about
this,
or
is
this
information
true
about
the
person
and
they
assert
yes
or
no?

a
great
answer,
but
so
you
laid
out
a
pretty
interesting
case
for
decentralized
identity
in
the
Enterprise
and
hyperledger
projects
are
Enterprise
blockchain
projects
yeah,
but
since
I
got
involved
with
decentralized
identity
a
couple
years
ago,
I've
described
it
in
in
a
second
way
and
that's
the
superpowers
it
gives
the
individual.
So
it
goes
from
being
these
multiple
silos
have
a
lot
of
data
about
me
to
I,
have
now
more
control
more
agency
over
the
data
about
me
what
it
can
be
used
for?
Can
you
just
touch
on
you
know?

What
are
these
superpowers
that
that
the
person
gets
when
their
bank
is
working
in
a
self-solving
identity
model
or
their
insurance
company
or
their
landlord?
You
know
I've
used
the
example
in
the
past
of
like
when
you
want
to
get
an
apartment
in
New,
York
City.
You
have
to
show
up
with
a
folder
full
of
information
about
you
and
hope
they
shred
it
when
they're
done
like.
Can
you
talk
a
little
bit
about
the
individual
and
what
self-sovereign,
Identity
or
decentralized
identity
could
mean
to
them
sure.

So
a
lot
of
parties
a
lot
of
Enterprise
or
smaller
companies,
they
are
yeah.
They
don't
want
that
data
anymore,
because
now
they
have
to
deal
with
all
that
stuff
around
it
and
plus.
Another
cool
thing
is:

the
data
because
we
have
all
this
cryptographic
assurance
behind
it.
You
can
be
much
more
sure
that
the
day
that
you're
presented
with
is
actually
correct
and
the
definition
of
correct
is,
is
a
whole
other
philosophical
discussion,
I'm
not
gonna
touch

but
so
for
the
individual
itself.

big
win
is
a
single
credential,
login
or
at
least
less
credentials,
because
if
you
look
at
a
username
or
email
address
password
model,
if
you
want
to
do
it
securely,
you
have
a
use,
a
unique
password
everywhere.

for

the
end,
it's

it
can
lower

barrier.

other

getting
the
control,

something
we

the
whole
Community
is
actively
working
on
it
with
getting
back
that
control.

also
responsibility.

need
to
manage
them

right

lose
my
password
somewhere,
I
can
just
reset

password

something
similar.

you
are
managing
all
your
credentials
and
you
are
the
only
one

them

you
make
a

everyone

been
focusing
on
staying
at
in
compatible
with
as
many
environments
as
possible.
So
we
have.
We
have
environments
for
service
with
node.js.
We
are
fully
working
on
mobile
environments
or
Rec
natives,
all
those
wallets
they
can
run
on
infj.
We
also
have
I
think
it's
two
projects
now
running
in
electron,
so
we
really
want
to
like
stay
available
for
everyone,
so
that
people
with
small
teams
startups
personal
projects
for
as
students,
you
only
need
to
need
to
learn
like
JavaScript
or
typescript,
and
you
can
get
started
with
afj.

Another
main
focus,
of
course,
is
the
usability.
We
really
want
it
to
be
as
easy
as
possible
to
get
started
with
it
and
to
provide
as
many
features
as
we
can,
which
is
quite
important
to
us.
We've
also
recently,
in
the
last
couple
months,
I
think
we've
been
working
on
basically
extending
Beyond
Aries,
so
we've
been
looking
into
open,
ID
and
other
credential
formats,
so
that
we
can
be
a
more
useful
framework
for
more
and
more
people
and
to
also
like
bridge
the
gap
between
different
kind
of
protocols
and
different
kind
of
standards.

That
is
great,
and
we
touched
a
little
bit
earlier
on
on
why
you
contribute
to
afj
but
you're,
both
contributors
to
afj
areas
from
JavaScript,
but
you
also
work
for
a
company
on
email
and
and
does
Animo
have
its
own
wallet
built
on
afj
like
is
that
is
that
part
of
what
you're
doing
like
you're
you're
building
in
this
open
source
Community?
But
you
also
have
your
own
products
based
on
that
open
source
project
project.

yes,

we
have

built
like
we

we
started

The
main
mission
was
because
again,
as
I
touched
upon
earlier
during
a
student
project,
we

started
working
with
Aries,

is
really
hard

it's
not
easy.
There
are
a
lot
of
specifications,

lot
of
in-depth
technical
knowledge
and

look

everywhere.

wallets

on
client
work

folks
who
either
on
the
issuer
side

verifier

how
important

interoperability

for
you
to
view
anybody
can
pick
this
up.
But
initially,
when
I
got
involved,
interoperability
was
everything
and
the
standards
were
going
to
help
with
that
and
the
the
build
was
going
to
help
with
that
and
open
source
is
going
to
help
that.

I
mean
we
are
talking
about
identity,
right
and
identity.
Is
such
a
big
topic,
like
I,
touched
on
the
the
password
example
earlier
on,
and
if
you
think
about
it
like
a
physical
password
is
it
is,
it
has
been
a
very
interoperable
document
for
a
long
long
time.
Not
every
passport
is
recognized
everywhere.
There
are
some
countries
that
are
not
being
recognized
by
others,
but
in
general
it's
a
really
interoperable
document,
and
you
don't
want
to
have
the
situation
where
you
cannot
prove
something
about
yourself
purely
because
someone
uses
other
technical
standards.

want
to
have
this

interoperability,
but
on
the
other
side,
it
is
also
unlikely
that
the
whole
world
will
agree
on
one
standard
so
because
I
mean
also
identity.

is
quite
culturally

how
to
handle
certain
things
are
really
depending
on

culture
and
all
kinds
of
other

usable

be

interoperability

we
can
talk

Aries
to
Aries,

still
interrupt,

we

want

with

with
afj.
We've
also
been
focusing
on
that
for
quite
a
bit
so
getting
to
those
there

think
there
are
two

they're
working
on
a
third
one.

talk
with
other

Aries
itself,

specification

separated
out

So
it's
been
a
bit
of
a

ride,
but
we
now
also
want
to

look
into

developing

supports
for
non-indie
credentials
or
now
autocrats,

help
with
interoperability.

want
to
provide

way
for
people

want

want
autocrats

whatever
reason,

are
free
to

want
our
framework
to
be
extremely
modular,

people

features

people

need
and

ARF
is
the
European
unions

it's
a
document
published
by
the

European
commission.
I
think
it
is
correctly
that
outlines
basically
their
vision
for
the

decentralized
identity
ecosystem
in
Europe.
So
they
have
already
announced

years
and
years
ago
that
they
want
to
get
into
this
and
well
slowly
with
steadily
they
are.

This
efforts
that
we
have
proposed
so
every
frame
of
JavaScript
is
based
on
every
standards,
as
parents
already
described,
and
the
standards
that
are
outlined
in
the
ARF
are
not
Airy
standard,
so
we
basically
have
a
a
framework
and
as
a
European
company
you
know
it's,
it's
I
mean
everything
is
still
very
relevant
in
the
US
and
in
Canada,
but
here's
it
looks
like
here
in
Europe.
It
looks
like
we're
moving
in
a
different
direction,
so
our
proposal
we
have
we've
basically
proposed
some
work.

are
seeking
funding
for
is
to
add
so
that
support
for
these.
For
these,
for
these
standards
to
afj
through
everything
JavaScript
which
which
will
make
that
framework
yeah,
it
will
make
it
usable
in
the
in
the
European
Union,
which
is
one
thing,
but
also
most
as
I,
think
is
well
from
what
I
see
is
most
Solutions
Frameworks
or
yeah
SSI
Solutions
out
there.

by
offering
this
it's
not
only
going
to
be
usable
in
in
the
European
Union,
but
it
may
also
act
as
a
bridge
between
different
kinds
of
standards,
so,
as
I
think
Barons
already
touched
upon
it,
you
