An In-Depth Look at the Þ-Calculus
In this series of seminars, we look in detail at the implementation of the Þ-calculus (pronounced “thorn calculus”), which uses the Isabelle proof assistant.
The Þ-calculus is a general-purpose process calculus with support for arbitrary data. It is embedded into Isabelle/HOL using higher-order abstract syntax. Developed by IOHK’s High-Assurance Team, it is used by the team to implement consensus protocols from the Ouroboros family and verify that they have various key properties.
The implementation of the Þ-calculus consists of a framework for labeled transition systems and the actual implementation of the calculus, which we both discuss in this seminar series. The code contains definitions as well as proofs of important properties.
Although the seminars in this series feature a lot of Isabelle code, knowledge of Isabelle is not required to follow along, as most of the used Isabelle constructs and concepts are explained. Basic knowledge of mathematical logic and functional programming should be all that is needed.
