At September’s Cardano Summit 2021, we introduced IOG's goal to help drive new standards in certification for decentralized applications (DApps) running on Cardano. This certification program is designed to provide levels of quality for DApps and their internal smart contacts.

This initiative has been led by Professor Simon Thompson, technical project director at IOG and it will help anyone building on Cardano comply with the best practices we’d like to encourage across the industry.

Last month, IOG led an Audit and Certification workshop in Barcelona, where we were joined by a number of auditors, including representatives from CertiK and Runtime Verification, plus a number of developers building on Cardano.

It’s the middle of the month, so it’s time for our regular technical update on the latest in Cardano development. Today, Tim Harrison is joined by regulars Nigel Hemsley & Kevin Hammond.

It's a critical week as the core IOG team (working with a number of SPOs and Dapp projects from the ecosystem) is in the final mile of testing and integration, including Plutus v2 compatibility and performance. Nigel talks about the new Vasil developer testnet for the Dapp community, and discusses the careful evaluation process underway and decision points as we head towards locking down and deploying the Vasil upgrade. Kevin also offers an update on the very positive results we’re seeing when it comes to node performance and how Vasil will see Cardano become more decentralized than ever before.

In April of 2022 the Input Output team traveled to the border of Ukraine and Poland. The goal was to shine a light on the incredible efforts being done by the decentralized network of individuals and organizations supporting those in need. To look at ways to facilitate donations by supporting organizations on the ground. And, most importantly however, the team was there to learn.

Input Output is a technology company. Our mission is to improve the systems of the world for everybody, everywhere. This is an aspirational goal that has utmost importance at a time of emerging global crisis. Issues like violent conflict, political oppression, and displaced populations inflict a devastating human toll. Our researchers, scientists, engineers and executives are focused on improving these systems and supporting community efforts to restore peace and stability wherever we can.

It is a bold ambition, but remains an important long-term goal for us all. Looking closer, in June, we will launch a campaign to encourage donations to a number of charities we met on the ground, and others doing important work for the people of Ukraine. Donations will be accepted in Ada and all other major Crypto Currencies through The Giving Block.

Cardano nodes in P2P mode will be able to construct topology without SPO intervention. Because software governs the outgoing connections, it can adapt to changing networking conditions, which makes the system more resilient. P2P also simplifies the process of running a relay node (one of the nodes run by stake pool operators, which does not produce blocks) or a block-producing node.

On September 12, Cardano successfully deployed smart contract capabilities via a hard fork combinator (HFC) protocol upgrade event for Alonzo. But the team didn’t stop there! Since then, we have continued work by looking at optimization, tweaking performance parameters, and working with our stake pool operators to ensure they can upgrade their nodes. Building out the smart contract ecosystem has also been a priority - supporting our partners and the community who are building out DApps on Cardano, and looking at the infrastructure and tools that need to be in place to enable this.

Watch this mid-month update to hear about the upcoming maintenance upgrade to support this activity and about the Plutus application backend (PAB) - what it is and how it facilitates DApp development.
