We also talked about the Jenkins terminology updates, the Jun 25 contributor summit agenda, and the ongoing LFX tools adoption. We also voted on promoting the Jenkins X 3.x release and on the swag budget for outreach programs. Then we discussed DevOps World and agreed on hosting the online meetup for CFP discussion and HOWTOs.

Have several contributors on the call and several future contributors as you might see, um but yeah today we have a few items in the agenda like discussing.

Etc then we will talk about the criminal jubilee, it's upcoming contributor summit and various lfx tools that rank product in the project. So that's the agenda and if you want to propose any additional items, just put them to the list and we will discuss them okay, so the first topic is 2.273 release.

We had to make out for the security release uh because there was a security release performed by jetty, which potentially leads to denial of service attacks. So yeah we decided to cut the release and.

To update that's it, so we will still have uh four lcs reviews in two weeks scheduled and nothing changes about that.

So 4.4 we should have the release candidate today tomorrow and once it's done, we will announce it through jenkins developers channels so because.

Okay, so the new lcts baseline selection, as you may see, there is a developer to this thread and in this writer we have a ongoing discussion of what what baseline we want to take and yeah. The current plan is that we will press it is 2.289 released yesterday.

So unless there is serious issues in six weeks, it will become the new lcs baseline and all the enhancements integrated into the jenkins court will be released. So there are some open questions. For example, we haven't integrated tables to this update for run summaries proposed by tim jacom, and we also did an integrated some other changes. We would like to have like a removal of common digester and most likely these changes will go into the september lcs release.

So it will take some time and if you have any strong opinions, please vote.

That's it any comments. Questions nope, sorry forward to me, okay, so another update um over the last two weeks, we had a discussion in the million million list about duplicating ruby and python runtimes.

So we have a consensus that we are doing, that we are going to announce that thanks uh hello to gavin for the blog post draft, so this blog uh plus draft is ready for review and hopefully we will measure it within a few days again we are going to apply some changes to the jenkins core, like removing uh permit lease for ruby class serialization, and these changes will be effective in the september lcs release. So there will be quite a lot of time for uh jenkins. You just started.

I don't think so, so the only I mean we would like to have more reviewers on that blog post, but the only real blockers right now is making sure the open graph image is clear that doesn't scare people, because that was one of the concerns we didn't want to say we're not supporting ruby. It's that we're not supporting the ruby run times. uh That needs clarification and uh there's some debate about updating the jep. So that has to get done, but I don't think either of those are blocker for the blog post to go out.

The connection item to update the jab seven but yeah, I'm not 100, confident that I will be able to do it today really depends okay, so, but anyway, thanks to all contributors- and hopefully it won't be a major impact on the jinx plugin ecosystem. You have something like 15 plugins affected and the biggest one gitlab plugin is largely replaced by a gitlab multi-branch plugin. So we should be.

I'm looking forward to it because it's all the metadata is really screwed up, so the plug-in site has trouble processing it each time. So I'm happy for it to be gone.

Though we still need to add support for tomstone pages on the plugin side, because there is growing demand due to the publishing of plugins and alpha versions. So if you could somehow support them on the plugin site, it would be great yeah. It's completely for a topic we could discuss.

I think I remember wrote up a to-do item or, like a studio item, to process that same list that update center has and then just instead of saying that plugin doesn't exist. It would be very clearly that plugins d published go here instead type thing, so it's coming eventually.

Okay, let's create them. Thank you, okay. So what's next outreach programs, so we have three ongoing outreach programs. At the moment, one is google summer of code for google summer of code. The application period is over. We've got more than 20 proposals, two different projects. There are strong proposals, so we are confident that we will have a number of projects announced. The announcement will have happen on may 13th over the next months. Mentors and orphanage will be reviewing applications forming mentor teams, etc, etc, but uh so far so good, so you said work.

The announcement is whether or not they got accepted. uh Yes, so the announcement of accepted projects, because there is complicated process, the c8 is complicated even more because we participate under the browser of the continuous delivery foundation. So we will also need to balance jenkins applications with applications to other projects.

uh We are currently working with other women organized from cdr, but yeah. It will take a while to conclude that and on may 13th there will be white announcement for all the google summer of code organizations before that we are not allowed to talk about what projects we would like to accept if you're interested to mentor some of them. Please join the mentor team and then yeah. You will get all the insights.

But we already have do we already have an idea on how many um other projects from the city have submitted ids.

So the ideas have been submitted uh by five projects and you.

Including um jenkins, so basically there were project ideas for artillery for screw driver for spinnaker. Okay, I was wrong. There was four projects. There were no ideas submitted for tipton, but we had a technology operability project idea in the jenkins project and there you, no ideas, submitted uh who's left spinning cap, but uh for spinnaker there is automatic application.

Okay, oh yeah, let's see how it goes.

Okay, so yeah, I think it will be a good uh yeah, so hopefully we'll have a number of really good projects. That's the intent for announcements, okay, google season of dogs. We are not accepted thanks a lot to mark and all other contributors for the application.

We have started the retrospective um yeah. I cannot really say why we were not accepted right now, uh because.

Jesus organizers, don't communicate feedback. Obviously they have accepted only 30 projects, so it's lower than in previous year and it's safe to assume that one of the main reasons that they wanted to give an opportunity to other projects because we participated last year and yeah. So for those who are interested, we have some money in the golfers. So technically we can run our own program using lfx mentorship. So if there are project ids, if you have to be a mentor for documentation project, please let us know.

Okay, so the last programming we have now is shocked africa, so we have uh five uh mentors work. You know on jenkins, pipeline and documentation as a part of this uh program. uh There were multiple requests submitted by the contributors.

uh The program ends uh by the end of april, and hopefully we will get a summary blog post on james io soon so do you say: there's five students or five mentors uh five mentees, but here we also have five mentors, I believe so, but yeah there is no dedicated project. So basically.

So what's next for us any comments on outreach programs. Yeah sorry spent too much time on updates and yeah another terminology of these. So we recovered this topic. We stopped in august by choosing the name uh for agency's controller. So now it's an official name. We made some recommendations about localizations, but we haven't made final decisions about the sub terms for jenkins controller, so pasted screenshots. So, for example, we still have no formal name for jenkins as a node for jenkins web interface, etc.

In many cases the decision is straightforward, but still I would like to finalize these decisions, and I started this thread, so we could just do that. So if you have any suggestions, how we name particular items or if you see any items missing in the list, there is a google doc. Please comment and we will accommodate that and then hopefully we will be able to facilitate contributions so that we make all these changes or they changed any place displayed on the screenshot.

Daniel beck has already submitted a pull request, so it shouldn't be a big deal, but there are other places which we would need to.

Yeah then drink is contributor summit. So quick update is confirmed for june 25th. The pantheon's delivery foundation has added to the registration page.

um We got almost 100 registrations by now, so yeah it doesn't mean that we will get 200 participants, because you know it's online event, especially free online event, but still the numbers are quite good.

So what's next today we still need to finalize the agenda. There is google doc and if you have any ideas about uh what are the miniature topics we should discuss? Please add them there.

We have some important topics like jenkins and basically collaboration and interoperability with drinking sex, and this is something to be kind of confirmed by now. Also, I want to discuss java, 17 support and yeah any other topics. It would be great, and actually I wanted to sync up with everything, because one of the items we could have there is actually a presentation by jenkins users so that we could get a number of junkies adopters who just present and share their feedback on jenkins and their vision, how it should be evolving under them in demands.

So we have never had such items at contributor summits, but I think it would be a good thing to do.

What kind of uh think you you, you think would be interesting to hear and how long could it be, for example,.

Yeah, that's a good question because we need to define the format. um So any ideas are welcome. It depends on the number of companies. We get a number of users we get but yeah. I think so. It shouldn't be a one-hour talk for sure.

So it should be maybe a relatively short summary of how they use jenkins or what uh they use. They've, eaten and then also sometime for discussion.

I I think it would be. It could be cool to exactly exactly what you're writing like the the easiest uh group of people to to convince to present would be those that are proud of something, so they believe they did something fun with jenkins yeah.

I think that that might might also be you know, fun to watch, but but there there probably could be a space and, let's see if someone really wanna feel it where, where the the challenges could also be mentioned, so you know they they kind of they can talk directly to contributors or not directly, but actually have them in the audience, or something like that yeah and some things that they were not solved yet, like things that you know like guys, were we're.

We were happy with most of the things, but there's this one that is kind of painful for us and and we're still struggling with it. I I think that have to be open to that too, but.

And then the the the length I I think I like 15 20 minutes it doesn't have to be deep dive, but but something that is kind of you know long enough to to uh so they can present actually something uh but but doesn't have to go through that don't have to go to to through implementation.

On is on june 25th and we have full freedom regarding forming our agenda. We will be using our own zone platform for the conference, so yeah. Let's keep working and yeah any ideas. You have any proposals you have. Let's do that and discuss that and yeah same for everyone on the call, so any ideas uh more than what will come.

But then let's say I, I I hear from some of my colleagues that they are like wow. We want to do it. Should we start a threat in developers, mailing list or or how do we handle it?.

Oh, like um so just related to uh the jenkins contributor summit, because this is taking place during cdcon. I can I mention that the um the jenkins award is going to be taking place also at cdcon, and the award application is being currently open until next week april 30th.

So um so I just want to share that information just in case anybody wants to um nominate- or you know, uh um one of our winners.

Yeah, uh so there will be blog posts which we plan to publish tomorrow. If everything goes, fine, so roxanne from cdf has submitted a pull request. There are a few minor changes to be done there, but it should be ready to go soon and yeah. There are some changes in the program this year and I guess these changes are good. So, firstly, there is a public nomination process.

You just submit a github issue, well comment to github issue with justification, etc, and the second the engine contributor is negligible because, for example, over the past years, uh some cloud-based employees and some other people who are not eligible uh to get their awards uh this year, you can eliminate any contributor, regardless of affiliation.

Okay, so the blog post is coming soon and yeah thanks a lot for bringing it up, because it should have been in.

Okay, so what else happens at civicon? You will have more than 6 jenkins related talks.

There will be also jenkins birth bills of even there is likely that we will have a kind of boost or open connect session to be announced, and we will get some time in the during the keynote for major announcements.

So we still need to have these major announcements, but it's something up to us, but if we have them, then we can utilize. This.

Is I've okay? I haven't been since I was essentially a vendor at jenkins, anything that the board needs to do at cdcon.

Should I be taking the time off just show up if I can show up.

Yeah, so there is contributor summit and there is a cdcon. You see proposed um a kind of open panel usage governance board members and well. It wasn't accepted mostly because of really tight schedule and resilience of applications with a focus on actually practical use cases and adopters.

But we can do this session, for example as a part of contributor of summit, or we can plan it, let's see as a separate session around this deep time frame so for the junkies board. Specifically, there is nothing we need to participate as governance board, but for the contributor summit. Of course everyone is welcome to take any area so, for example, ui ux static analysis.

Who knows any topic. We can add there and see how we could facilitate.

Okay, so moving on.

Okay, lfx tool, adoption of these yeah before that I had a separate biology for each tool, but yeah I'll do a really quick summary of what's going on so the fx security. Basically, it's sneak um after the contributor summit february, we agreed that you would like to adopt that.

We have experienced a few fatal issues with this tool, uh so, for example, uh yeah you cannot configure ignore lists for cvs and with jenkins dependency management. It's quite difficult because you've got something like 200, solvent, false positives across the decay system, uh so we cannot use lfx security phases. I started a discussion with the linux foundation team um about how we could do that later.

We got this unique team involved and what is the current one that sneak and lfx security wants to work in the future, which would allow uh projects to actually manage their configurations and they invite jenkins to be a pilot project and they want.

Okay, so yeah, okay, easy cla, so it's basically a work of the contributor license. Agreement flow uh to really for the governance board and uh jenkins contributors from the current tedious flow if they want to get special permissions.

uh So, um okay, I pasted the quote there. So we have two options: one is to have independent jenkins account. Another one is to have an account as a part of the continuous delivery foundation, because the county's delivery foundation already has an account which is currently used only for tickton.

So what account we use should be more or less transparent for and contributors, but it may impact how we manage easily so question to everyone. Do we want to have a self-managed that includable wisp.

So if I remember the mailing list correctly, the shared account means that they only have to sign it once for all the shared account or all the shared products. Yes well, a separate account would mean they'd have to sign it once for jenkins and once for tekton and once for everything else, yeah, that's correct.

I was gonna say I sort of think we should have individual, but I don't find enough uh clas to no really care.

Yeah, I'm the other direction, lobbying that we should. We should just use the shared so that we don't have to go through maintaining our own. But what are the downsides? Oh, like do you see any negatives from from choosing to do it outside? We would have to create our own account with lfx, or is there more to it? Does it significantly increase our burden.

I don't think it would significantly increase our burden also. We have um a few special requests. So, for example, I brought a question about security contributor agreement because currently we don't have one and it might make sense to have one, especially for company contributors, so yeah going his own accounts has some merits, but I don't have strong opinion because I don't have insights how much time it.

Yeah also, it may cause some political questions because, for example, some companies may not want to allow their contributors to contribute. Let's say to spinning care, and by doing this guild card contributor license agreement. Basically, you permitted for the list of employees unless we find a way to somehow scope these contributions, which is not a part of the current ccla.

I mean, I think, since the agreement is so easy to sign, especially with this, it makes sense to separate them and just keep it simple.

Account to have an independent account, so we have one specific jenkins. So if someone I mean want to contribute to jenkins only I mean that's kind of weird because we joined the cdf, so we are supposed to have I mean yeah, I mean I mean both both options are fine to me. I just like I would go with an app and by default, but I don't have strong opinion.

Okay, lfx mentorship again, no major updates. uh There were some was some details during the immigration from coming to reach the lfx mentorship we just fixed it together with linux foundation, support so now sliding the official list is graduated uh mainly from their tax mentorship but yeah. Basically, that's it.

um Another update that I started getting some notifications about mentors wanting to join the project, uh so they enabled this feature an effects, mentorship and yeah. Maybe we'll need to do something about that, because right now we do not have a confirmed open program for lfx mentorship, but yes, I mean people assume that we do have one.

People wanting to mentor or wanting to be mentored is that your same question.

Yeah, so currently, our program is not open for applications, so maintenance cannot apply, but mentors apparently can apply and our problem, which has been brought up by one contributors, uh that uh yeah basically our project on lfx mentorship, which is abstract. It's basically contribute to jenkins and we figure out the details later so yeah with the current arrangement.

The mentorship submission doesn't quite work.

So oleg is that a place where I should be considering submitting a proposal to do something like jenkins on kubernetes as a an lfx mentorship thing that would be a replacement and can lfx mentorships be crouched can be, can they be funded or is it so these can't we could fund the mentee in that case, yeah.

So we have budget uh on lfx uh crowdfunding, so lfs crowdfunding can be used to pay contributor statements, but to mentors we cannot use it for paying salaries, but stipends like encouraging payments can be done and yeah I'm not allowed to discuss. What is the difference uh so but yeah there is some clear distinction in the linux foundation guidelines so, but what it means for us that we can at any moment run our own program like we did with sledding for gcask developer tools, basically for visual studio plugin for gcas.

We can do something like that at any moment.

So, basically, that's eternal effects. Mentorship. Do we need to give more people access so you're? Not. I feel bad every time you get more work so.

Well, in the case of all fx mentorship, we had multiple mentors so mark jackson, I believe mark is registered there and there was somebody else. I believe team jacob, but yeah, so felix mentorship is a bit complicated in terms of management.

We had a few sessions with the linux foundation, product management, about uh mentorship, crowdfunding and they're, really working on improving these tools, so they're getting better and better but yeah.

So any contributions are welcome, but right now it's not a big deal, because, basically we don't use these tools too much crowdfunding is just a tool. We should use yeah, okay, okay, so what else? So there is a thread. I started an advocacy, an outreach about uh promoting jenkins x, 3 release, so jenkins, x. 3 now again includes support for jenkins as jenkins standalone controllers, uh or is cloud native setups using runner and tikton.

uh There is documentation about that. The announcements and I think that we should promote this release from the jenkins channels just because now there is a lot of opportunities for collaboration between projects, and I think that we should do so. This way.

I'm curious because I don't know the history: why did they drop jenkins did? Is it because they thought that everyone was switching to techcon and then we and then directors didn't support it yeah? So there was.

A desire to go to a fully cloud native system, um they had basically two modes, so one was classic jenkins yeah. Another one was uh serverless. Drink is basically powered by jenkins, fell runner as a pipeline engine, but yeah. This mode has concerns about resource utilization and about flexibility and yeah. The jenkins side team decided to go with tecton and they duplicated the jenkinsfeld runner and jenkins engines in jenkins, too. They have never been really removed from the code base, they were still available, but they were marked as duplicated and in general. 3.

These integrations are replaced by other integrations, which basically use smaller standard approaches like deployment, helm, charts et cetera, uh so they can support jenkins drinks, file, runner and actually pretty much other pipeline engine or service using more or less standard angle.

uh So but yeah from the documentation, support for jenkins and jinx pipelines is there again and, for example, james strahan became a major contributor to detecton client plugin, and there was a blog post just published today. So I quarterly believe that currently we in the win-win state between jenkins and jxx projects- and we should use this opportunity.

We I have um a couple of tweets submitted for review, so not through standard chat, but through this google doc, then there is a draft for the expanded linkedin post, and there is also also talking points for jenkins blog post, which I haven't even started yet. And yep quick question budget request, so we have um a few programs uh like she caught africa g-stock applications. We also had several students from france doing pen testing for jenkins, who reported a number of security vulnerabilities.

I again the security team is going to write a blog post soon, but yeah what time about it that we likely need to send some swag to these contributors, and I started at least again. There is recreating unboxing about that. So, if somebody has any ideas, for example, maybe we had some students working on jenkins or something like that. Again, we can add this to the distribution list um and yeah.

So we still need some budget, because the continuously foundation is happy to donate a lot of schwag for us from their coffers, but they have issues with delivery costs and they cannot fund these delivery costs from this continuous delivery foundation budget for this year. So we would need to use drinks money, and we will also need to use jenkins money if we want to produce some custom stickers, because currently what they have in stock is just classic jenkins and yeah.

You know that evil jenkins is much more popular, everybody needs it on the laptop and there are other stickers so yeah. So I think that we should produce a few parts. I have some more packs of stickers in switzerland and we can send them to pinnacle which packages the deliveries but yeah.

I would like to request some budget just to have freedom to do that, and I didn't want to disturb the drinking governance meeting every time I need to spend 50 dollars on the package, so I just wanted to ask for blanket approval for 1000 so that we coordinate with their vox and our fish seek how this spender and yeah. Let's see it's. My first ride is jenkins events officer before that alicia was handling all this requests and yeah. I have no idea how much money you would actually need, but let's see.

I I have no objections to this. um I think, if anything, we want to try to make sure that we don't send sticker bundles to the same six. People like try to make sure that it's usually new students whenever possible, but.

So it's for trish, it's not for paying stipends, it's not for sending something big. It's likely a t-shirt, a few stickers and yeah jenkins socks, or something like that.

There is still an open question how many of you like to send, but right now the logistics is quite challenging, because our vendor I mean the linux foundation's vendor- sends packages only over fedex and, for example, if you want to send a t-shirt and a few stickers from the united states to europe, they asked 80.

As a once in a while speaker, I always have trouble deciding what I should talk about. So it's always a good idea to have some like getting started. Ideas like here's, here's things you could talk about.

Yeah yeah, no, I think I think, that's a great one. You know demos are great. Technical talks is showing how people, how you do certain things, how you solve certain problems? Those are great um uh case studies you know um are, are also great as well as long as you know. You not pitching a product, and I know.

I I think the best feedback I ever got after the presentation was where I explained something that I considered a uh uh it's so super easy that that everyone knows it and and and and they don't and they were so happy someone told them because because usually they they don't know it. I don't remember what it was and I think uh you know the more advanced users can can just figure a lot of things out which doesn't mean that we shouldn't have you shouldn't have uh like more advanced technical presentations.

I I think they will be exciting too, but yeah. The thing that something seems obvious to someone doesn't really mean that it's going to be boring or or not impressive. Enough, probably the other way around.

Obvious is I I hate the list. There's an ableist list. Obvious is one of them, so if you ever say obviously this is the thing. I think that's a great idea and it also supplements into the um a program that cloudbees is also offering, which is it's a first-come, first-served basis but they're, offering um speaking training um public speaking training course. um It'll be a group kind of training, but it's first come first like supplements.
