From YouTube: Microsoft Word Add-ins online-only API requirement set features and updates – July 2022

Description

In this 5-minute Developer-focused demo, Yun Wang shares Word for the web general availability feature areas in latest Microsoft Word JavaScript API online-only requirement set. Feature areas include support for footnotes and endnotes (insert, get collections, navigate and operate footnotes/endnotes), for comments and for track changes. Additionally, Fields APIs (web-only Preview) to Get collections of fields, Paragraph, Range, Table and TableRow objects and Navigate fields. Additionally, feature candidates for next general availability release reviewed. This PnP Community demo is taken from the Office Add-ins community call – July 2022, recorded on July 13, 2022.

I'll start with the word update, as you may already noticed, um we had released the online only requirement set about a month ago back to may forward gis apis. This set is special because the apis in it are available only for web version of word.

You may argue that gs apis should support multiple platforms instead of just the web, but the reason we are doing so is to provide an opportunity for the add-ins which are built primarily for web users to get things quicker, because web apis can have more frequent deliveries comparing to the desktop version uh in in our internal process.

The apis in this set are production apis so that your released add-in can directly take advantage of them, even though your add-ins uh users may be mostly desktop users, you still can take this chance to release a version or take advantage of some of the web capabilities for your released add-ins.

This is not saying that all the future features or functions will go into this set.

First, we just selectively choose which apis will go into the set and finally, uh in the end, sometimes in the future, all the apis will go to the multi-platform support where our policy here is that we will make sure uh in most of the cases uh you know the all the platform will have the same set of the apis, although we have exceptions but we'll keep that exceptions as small as possible, and now um we have three major feature areas supported for this uh online: only requirement set. um We have footnote and no support.

We have comments. We have track changes in back to february, we had a introduction for the comments and track changes as preview version, but in the ga version in this only set we added more capabilities for comments, and also we added support for footnote and and notes for support.

So here is a demo for you that to show how do we support footnotes and endnotes apis? You can actually insert insert the footnotes and notes through the range object and also you can select the endnote footnotes from different object, and you can also navigate to a specific node you're, adding.

And also we have some asks about the fields apis and we listened and we achieved. You know we implemented this field api in our preview set as well. But the interesting part here is that we have this field support in the web, only preview right now, so that you can directly try them right now. We support the get the collections of the fields so that you can navigate all the fields you have through different types of the word object and coming in next, we will uh so here are the candidates for next ga release.

By saying ga release, I mean that it is a release that supports all the platforms.

I can tell you that we will have more frequent cadence of delivery world apis in the coming months or years, and the most recent one or the next one will probably come in six months by the end of this year or earlier next year. So in that set, we will have like track changes, comments, etc on those features to be included, but these are just the candidates right, so we always can.

You know have some chance to do some changes here and please tell us what you expect for the future ga releases and if you want to take advantage of a more frequent deliveries for word apis thanks very much.
