In this Town Hall, the NEAR Foundation is looking back at everything that has been achieved over the past year. The NEAR Ecosystem has grown at an unprecedented rate, while also the protocol itself saw important milestones achieved like phase 0 of the Nightshade Sharding Infrastructure.
This Town Hall starts with NEAR Foundation CEO Erik Trautman sharing the vision of the Open Web World, where people control their assets, data and power of governance. From there, Erik continues on how the NEAR Protocol empowers people to build the Open Web World on the Simple, Secure, and Scalable platform that NEAR Protocol is. This is followed by an important announcement, NEAR Foundation CEO Erik Trautman is handing over his role as CEO to Marieke Flament.
NEAR Co-Founder Illia Polosukhin gives a recap of the past year in numbers and provides a comprehensive overview of everything that happened in the ecosystem. town
hall

really

us
a
good,
a
good
way
to
frame
the
container
of
the
year
of
2021,
which
definitely
looked
a
lot
different
on
the
way
in
than
it
has
on
the
way
out
both
for
for
the
world
in
general,
as
well
as
the
new
ecosystem
itself.

things
off

just
as
a
quick
note
on
the
agenda,
what
we're
gonna
cover
today
is.

That's
what
we
call
the
open
web
and
it's
something
that
it
can
feel
a
little
bit
abstract.
But
it
really
once
once
you
see
once
you
touch
it
once
you
can
use
the
applications
on
the
platform.
It
starts
to
feel
a
lot
more
real,
but
I
think
it
is
always
important
to
kind
of
benchmark
on
the.
Why?
But
what
is
the
platform?
The?
How?
How
how
does
near
actually
do
this
again
near
is
a
layer,
one
blockchain
that
allows
developers
to
build
apps
that
consumers
can
actually
use.

It's
simple,
it's
secure
it's
scalable
and
it's
basically
it's
everything
that
we
need
to
do
to
get
to
a
billion
end
users
on
blockchain
powered
apps
in
the
next
five
years,
so
near
the
way
that
we
get
there
near
is
the
first
truly
started
blockchain.
So
sharding
has
come
up
a
lot
as
a
technology
and
it's
a
lot
more
difficult
than
it
even
sounds.
But
one
of
the
one
of
the
most
important
things
about
charting
on
mir
is
that
a
it's
actually
live.
So
you
can
look
at
the
code.
You
can
see
it
running.

There
are
currently
four
shards
running
on
mainnet,
thanks
to
a
recent
upgrade
and
the
number
of
shards
are
actually
dynamic
and
they'll
be
changed.
Every
12
hours
they'll
be
able
to
be
changed
via
governance
every
12
hours,
but
the
most
important
thing
is
that
as
a
developer,
you
don't
actually
have
to
know
that
you
don't
have
to
care.
So
so
I
think,
if
you're
thinking
of
this
as
a
database,
it
it's
a
database
where
the
developer
doesn't
have
to
understand
all
the
bits
that
are
going
on
it
doesn't
have.

I
think
there
are
a
lot
of
things
that
the
developers
have
been
conditioned
to
have
to
think
about
in
other
environments,
and
near
has
basically
been
designed
from
the
ground
up
to
make
it
so
that
that's
all
abstracted
away
and
developers
can
really
just
focus
on
building
applications
that
normal
people
can
use
and
as
part
of
that
so
near
native,
the
the
core
smart
contract
platform
is
written
rust
or
it's
actually
running
wasm,
so
anything
that
compiles
down
to
wasm.
So
most
smart
contracts
are
being
written
in
rust.

have
contracts
in
typescript
as
well.
It's
an
asynchronous
platform
and
again
it
scales
with
sharding,
so
it's
effectively
infinitely
scalable.
You
also
have
on
top
of
that
there's
the
aurora
platform,
which
is
which
runs
evm.
So
it's
effectively
a
layer,
two
for
ethereum,
that's
running
on
mir.
It
has
free
transactions
and
it's
fully
composable
and
compatible
with
existing
contracts
and
and
wallets,
and
things
like
that
from
the
the
evm
ecosystem
and
then
also
on
the
other
side.

I
guess
it
was
about
a
year
and
a
half
ago
we
got
through
genesis.
We
we
we
had
the
first
nodes
running
on
the
network.
Then
we
took
off
the
training,
wheels
the
foundation
spun
down
its
nose,
the
nodes,
the
network
was
officially
running
decentralized
and
then,
in
october
of
last
year,
the
network
became
fully
live
as
its
core
governance
worked
and
the
validators
voted
to
enable
transfers,
and
the
network
has
since
then
been
completely
decentralized
and
the
role
of
the
foundation
then
has
has
shifted
from.
How
do
we
stand
this
up?
A
All
the
way
to
really
thinking
through
like
this
is
this
is
more
than
just
a
small
group
of
developers
hustling
hard
to
make
this
ship.
This
is
now
an
ecosystem,
a
full
ecosystem.
It
it's
gone
from
a
small,
a
small
team.
To
now
now
there
are
teams
that
have
been
sort
of
sharted
out
across
the
ecosystem,
and,
and
there
are
people
building,
there
are
thousands
of
developers
building.

top
of
this,
we
have
hundreds
of
applications
and
the
the
needs
of
that
ecosystem
are
very
different
than
the
needs
of
the
ecosystem
of
even
a
year
ago
or
even
six
months
ago,
and
so
this
is
part
of
the
framing
of
2021.
It's
also
part
of
the
framing
of
the
foundation,
and
so
what
I'm
really
excited
about
is
that,
in
addition
to
the
changing
of
the
role
of
the
foundation,
we've
also
had
the
opportunity
to
reassess
how
how
do
we
bring
that?
How
do
we
bring
the
foundation
to
the
next
level?

Who
can
it
basically
a
leadership
team
that
can
bring
us
not
just
from
zero
to
one
but
from
one
to
a
hundred?
And
so
what
we've
done
in
the
last
several
months
is
the
board
and
myself
have
run
a
search
for
a
leadership
team
for
the
foundation,
and
that
starts
with
the
top
job,
and
so
the
requirements
for
this
were
pretty
simple.
We
need
the
best
person
in
the
world
and
that
that
person
has
to
be
a
unicorn.

And
that's
an
incredibly
difficult
set
of
things
to
combine
and
that's
why
I'm
extremely
excited
to
announce
that
marie
flament
will
be
joining
us
as
the
foundation's
ceo
as
of
the
first
of
the
year
and
we're
going
to
introduce
her
here
today.
So
marieke
has
she's
coming
in
from
the
the
neobank
the
london-based
neobank
medal
she
previously
ran.
She
previously
was
the
cmo
of
circle
and
had
pre
and
before
that,
led
their
european
expansion
efforts
as
their
managing

pillars

technology

the
fact

which
is
simply
amazing,

fastest

simplest
and
safest
proof
of
stake
layer.

blockchain
protocol,

think,
is
really
really
exciting.

how

we
get
from
one
to

a
hundred
and
to
continue
working

near
is

these

on
telegram
and
other
channels
and
obviously
it's
kind
of
hard,
and
then
we
have
wechat.
We
have
the
other
few
other
kind
of
channels
in
different
media,
but
it's
exciting
to
see
kind
of
this
community.

day
by
day,
we
have
1700
monthly,
active
builders
and
developers,
which
is
super.
Super
cool
have
three
hundred
dollars
over
three
hundred
million
tbl
aurora
been
driving
a
lot
of
it
recently
and
over
100
guilds,

just
kind
of
zooming
in
on
developers.
We've
had
a
really
cool
growth
since
may,
as
we
kind
of
got
all
the
pieces
and
building
blocks
in

so
over

four
months
we
had
almost,
I
think,

percent
months
over

growth

it's
exciting,
to
see

progressing

builders

able

we're

it
and
win
in
their

so

three
different
eco
funds
and
actually
more
starting
there's
proximity
labs
that
are
spearheading
d5,
both
in
near
native
and
aurora,
with
their
350
million
grand.

foundation

which
been
kind

accelerating
since
neocon
as
well
as
investments,
and
we
are
kind

spinning
up
just
regional
and
startup
funding

a

out
as
this

expanding,

quickly,
those
apps
launching
sometimes

cool
things
happening
there
and
to
not
forget
octopus,
octopus
has
its
own
ecosystem
as
well,
and
so
there's
app
chains.
There
debian
network
has
launched
myriad
is
in
auditing
and
then
they
has
registered,
and
so
I
think
they
have
a
lot
more
networks
in
the
process
right.

hard
work

been
done
even
on

working

different

that
have

markets
