Description
Here we go through the concept design of Open Source Ecology's CNC Torch table, which includes auto ignition, gas control, and auto height sensing.
This is a modular, scalable design - built on 5'x5' size modules extensible readily to 5'x10' and longer torch tables.
This is based on a fully open source toolchain: Marlin firmware and RAMPS 1.4 hardware, Universal Axis, Universal Controller, and FlatCAM or Inkscape for toolpath generation. Okay,
so
recording
so
today's
session,
and
to
this
week
the
Saturday
actually
starts
one
week
of
development
on
the
CNC
torch
table.
The
end
goal
is
to
produce
a
kit,
a
workable
kit,
so
we've
had
several
prototypes
of
the
CNC
torch
table
already,
starting
in
2011
or
20
2009.
Let's
go
to
the
CNC
torch
table
genealogy,
but
idea
here
is
what
why
do
you
want
a
torch
table?
A
torch
table
is
a
machine
that
cuts
flat
sheets
of
Steel
or
tubing
patterns,
computer-controlled
patterns
of
any
geometry.
So,
for
example,
things
like
our
brick
press.

We're
gonna
show
up
a
way
to
build
that
also
for
high
performance,
using
the
universal
axis
and
university
controller
that
we
have
for
about
a
thousand
dollars
in
price
about
10x
high
performance
means
oxy-acetylene
torch,
which
can
cut
readily
up
to
7
inches
of
steel
thickness.
So
that's
no
joke
and
why
oxy
fuel
oxy
fuel
compared
to
plasma,
plasma
or
laser
or
water
jet,
while
you're
talking
about
much
higher
costs,
their
plasma
cutters
cannot
get
you
at
low
cost
to
get
you
more
than
about
one
inch
or
so
of
cutting
thickness.

So,
for
example,
if
you
wanted
to
cut
three
inch
thick
steel
forget
about
it
with
a
plasma
cutter.
Unless
you
want
to
pay
ten
twenty
thirty
thousand
dollars
for
the
plasma
cutter
machine
itself,
the
actual
torch
so
oxy
selling
fuel
torch
torches
are
very
inexpensive.
It's
a
it's
a
handle,
it's
essentially
gas
bottles
and
a
torch
cutting
handle.

So
we
will
do
this
week
is
devise
a
system
that
that
uses
this
torch,
handle
oxy-fuel,
so
oxid,
oxy-acetylene
oxygen
and
acetylene
to
do
that
using
already
off-the-shelf
ball
already
prepared
techniques
like
we've
got
the
universal
axis
at
1
inch.
We've
got
the
universal
controller
for
the
CNC
control,
so
we're
gonna
actually
use
the
tool
chain
of
Marlon
and
Kyra,
and
the
universal
controller
I'll
show
that
Marlon
and
Kure
as
their
universal
tool
set
for
3d
printing.
So
why
not
build
more
applications?

On
top
of
that,
since
that's
a
ready
controller
that
we
can
use
for
many
applications,
not
just
the
3d
printers,
the
the
software,
as
is,
lends
itself
to
doing
anything
in
flat
dimensions
as
well.
For
3d,
printing,
the
the
software
tool
chain
gets
you
three
dimensional
3d
prints,
but
you
can
do
very
simple,
simple
things
as
well:
using
Marlin
Keira
right
now
we're
using
lows
but
Keira
the
stock
Marlin
into
the
CNC
torch
table.

We're
also
gonna
have
to
add
a
couple
of
other
other
tools,
probably
a
flat
cam,
which
is
an
open
source
software
for
generating
G
codes
from
flat
drawings.
We
can
do
the
initial
CAD
within
free
CAD,
for
example,
so
free
cut
can
get
you
to
exports
of
DXF
files,
which
are
the
cutting
files
for
steel,
or
we
can
use
things
like
Inkscape,
which
is
a
drawing
program.
So
if
you
put
your,
you
can
do
your
designs
there,
but
that
doesn't
have
really
cad
functionality.
So
you
don't
want
to
go.

want
to
do
some
precise
shape
that
you're,
trying
to
figure
out
the
exact
geometry
of
you
probably
want
to
go
to
freecad,
draw
it
up
in
a
sketcher
use
that
tool
chain
to
get
all
the
dimensions
and
then
export
it
to
the
accept.
The
accept
goes
to
flat
cam
flat
cam
goes
into
g
code
export
for
well,
you
don't
have
to
use
cure.

use
the
SD
card,
so
you
you
can
export
that
g
code
I
believe
from
flat
cam
directly
to
an
SD
card
that
you
plug
into
our
universal
controller
and
have
the
torch
table
cut.
So
that's
that's
what
I'm
seeing
here
we
haven't
done
that
full
toolchain
for
CNC
torch
table,
yet
I
think
flat,
cam
and
we'll
see
if
that's
the
way
to
go
but
I
think
flat.
Cam
is
probably
the
deal
where
we've
got
two-dimensional.

that
you
export
directly
into
g-code
the
system.

in

card

an

card
into
the

we've

a
lot
for
the
3d
printers.
We
also
have

build
larger
printers.
We
also
built
one
inch
universal
axis
so
last
year
it
was
a
2017
we
did
build
when
it
was
just
two
years
ago
we
did
the
build
of
a
one
inch
universal
axis
for
a
larger
CNC
torch
table,
which
was
five
by
ten.

was
our
prototype
before
that
we've
done
a
torch
table.
So
let's
actually
go
back
to
the
history.
When
we
go
into
torch
table
genealogy
just
to
show
what
work
has
been
done
so
we're
building
upon
open-source
industry
standards
here
so
at
the
genealogy
page
first
one
was
CNC
torch
table
one
and
all
prototype
one.
So
let's
go
through
that.
You
can
see
the

we've
used
it
we
cut
actually
when
we
had
a
production
run
of
the
four
tractors
that
was
back
in.

back
in
2011
as
I
see
the
was
featured
in

but
we
cut
a
bunch
of
parts
like
wheel
plates,
basically
geometries,
where
you
either
measure
four
hours
or
you
have
this
cut
in
five
minutes.
The
idea
about
CNC
work
is
that
you
can
cut
out
already
geometry
without
having
to
measure
when
you
talk
about
welding
assembly.
Things
from
metal
most
of
the
time
is
actually
measuring
things
and
figuring
out
what
what
things
are
so
actually
to
welder
to
actually
do
the
cutting.

If
you
have
the
markings,
that's
pretty
easy,
but
how
do
you
get
the
markings?
Well,
the
computer.
Just
does
that
for
you,
you
can
do
that
with
CNC.
That's
the
case.
So,
that's
that's
how
it
looks
and
to
make
make
magazine
that
was
our
first
table.
We
used
exactly
that
at
that
point.
We
use
Linux
C&C,
meaning
we
didn't
use
USB
ports.
We
used
a
serial
port
rs-232,
but
very
few
computers
have
that
kind
of
port.

Since
we've
done
a
lot
of
work
on
the
3d
printer,
we
build
around
that
tool
chain
so
that
that
print
printer
printer
that
that
torch
table
has
been
used
primarily
in
the
production
run
of
the
tractors,
where
we
cut
out
a
bunch
of
wheel
plates.
So
we
had
a
several
aborted
since
then,
which
we
actually
never
used.
We
prototyped
various
aspects
of
the
system,
but
torched
able
to
actually
was
never
built.
We
have
a
design
there.
We
did
build
1708
those
you
can
call
that
prototype

We
call
that
the
d3d
cnc
torch
table
d3d
refers
to
our
universal
axis
d3d.
We
mean
the
distributive
3d
printer
kind
of
the
universal
axis.
If
you
look
at
that
so
yeah
we
did
build
this.
It
was
a
5
by
10
structure
here,
we're
using
1
inch
rod,
pieces
and
3d
printed
pieces
with
tiny
NEMA
17
motors.
So
this
was
actually
altogether
great
proof
of
concept.
We
hung
a
torch
on
it.
This
thing
moves
around
structure,
wasn't
stable
enough,
so
we
never
ended
up
using
this,
but
the
concept
is
is
sound
here.

Is
it's
very
good
to
go
with
up
to
let
about
5
feet
with
the
one-inch
Universal
axis,
but
beyond
that,
so
in
the
length
length
axis,
as
you
see
in
the
picture
there,
the
10
foot
long
axis,
it
starts
to
sag
a
little
bit
and
wobble
a
little
bit.
So
when
you
get
to
lengths
like
10
feet
with
a
solid
shaft,
just
the
weight
of
the
shaft
makes
it
actually
bend
under
its
own
weight.

So
a
solution
for
a
system
like
that
is
using
something
like
one-inch
pipe,
which
schedule
40
pipe
has
the
rails,
where
that
doesn't
Bend
on
its
under
its
own
weight,
even
though
it's
a
hollow
tube,
it's
actually
structurally
more
sound
for
this
application
because
it
doesn't
droop
under
its
own
weight.
Now
it
might
be
acceptable
to
that.
A
You
have
a
droop
because
of
auto-hide
correction,
which
were
you're
tracing
the
level
of
the
of
the
cut
workpiece,
but
we
want
more
stability
so
based
on
the
learnings
from
the
last
prototype,
we
didn't
get
to
the
automatic
ignition
and
an
auto
gas
control.
At
that
prototype,
we
had
motion
and
tested
the
motion
out
and
learning
from
that.

We
decided
to
go
to
a
modular
system
now,
because
five
by
ten,
that
gets
some
to
some
serious
size,
and
we
were
also
thinking
about
well
how
to
get
more
people
active,
participating
with
us
on
the
smaller
scale.
So
how
about
making
a
modular
system
that's
based
on
five
by
five
modules
that
are
then
stackable
to
five
by
ten
five
by
15
any
length
you
want
it's
a
little
more
tricky
to
get
like,
say
ten
by
ten,
but
typically
like
the
loop.

The
sheets
in
America,
the
largest
ones
that
are
practical
to
work
with
are
about
five
by
ten
feet.
This
is
what
this
could
handle,
but
let's
start
with
a
five.
So
this
time
around
we'll
do
a
minimum
viewable
prototype
for
cutting
four
by
eight
foot
sheet
sheets
of
steel.
So
a
five
by
five
structure.
That's
modular
that
with
very
minimal
modification.
You
can
turn
from
five
feet
to
ten
feet.
Long
and
the
five
foot
allows
us
to
prototype
it
faster
and
shake
down
all
the
systems
like
the
auto
ignition
and
auto
gas
system.

So
the
the
fuel
system
you
have
to
in
order
to
do
efficient
for
efficiency
or
maybe
eco,
we're
gonna
have
three
on/off
switches
for
gas,
so
naturally
you
would
have
the
cutting
oxygen.
If
you
link,
if
you're
doing
oxy
fuel,
what
you
have
is
oxygen
and
acetylene
mix
together,
you
can
just
like
the
said
lean.
That's
that's
just
a
settling
channel.
You
can
mix
some
oxygen
with
that
to
get
a
flame,
that's
clean,
because
the
the
acetylene
flame
is
going
to
be
yellow
and
smoky.

So
you
add
oxygen
to
that
and
that
turns
into
a
hot
flame
and
then
the
third
item
is
the
cutting
oxygen
Lance,
in
other
words
up
a
stream
of
higher
pressure
oxygen
that
goes
down
the
nozzle.
That
then
cuts
because
the
way
cutting
works,
you
heat
up
the
metal
to
red,
hot
and
white-hot,
and
then
you
turn
on
the
cutting
oxygen
and
that
oxygen
just
oxidizes
and
burns
everything
through
with
a
lot
of
sparks.

So
that's
that's
the
way
the
oxy
acetylene
works
and
the
next
step
after
this
next
prototypes
here
would
be
oxy-hydrogen,
which
is
a
cleaner,
faster
cut,
more
sustainable
because
you
can
generate
oxy-hydrogen
from
splitting
water.
So
that's
also
part
would
be
part
of
an
off-grid
micro
factory.
That's
doable
wherever
there
is
not
even
the
gas
supply
chains.
You
generate
your
oxygen
and
hydrogen
on-demand
from
water
using
electricity,
which
is
actually,
if
you
look
at
the
history
of
oxy
oxy
fuel,
cutting
it
started
with
hydrogen.

If
you
didn't
know
that,
if
you
look
at
the
history,
hydrogen
was
the
first
fuel
because
hydrogen
was
easy
to
get
he
just
split
water.
It
took
some
more
decades
before
acetylene
came
about,
which
is
a
you
have
to
make
in
a
chemical
process.
So
yeah
that's
the
deal.
So
let's
take
a
look
at
so
that's
this
prototype
that
was
2
years
ago,

2017!

two
years
ago,
we
did
that
in
a
small
workshop,
now
we're
going
to
the
next
version.

the

the

go
into
the
design
document
and
see
what's
what's
going
on
in
there,
so
we
can
design
and
build
it.

One
thing,
I
would
point
out
is
ok,
let's
think
about
the
modularity
aspect
in
a
serious
way.
That's
and
I'm
actually
glad
to
show
that
this
5x5
scalable
torch
tables,
you'd.
Think
like
ok!
Well,
how
are
you
gonna
do
that
you
actually
have
a
waterbed
in
there,
so
we're
designing
a
waterbed,
so
all
the
smoke
and
heat
is
trapped
in
water
bed.
Well,
how
do
you
connect
two
of
these
together?
A
Listen
up
to
this
conversation
and
we'll
find
out,
there's
there's
actually
some
good
ways
to
make
that
happen
that
it
with
minimal
modification.
You
can
scale
completely
within
a
sense
that
no
it's
not
some
heroic
effort
to
join
two
of
them
like
sometimes
you
might
hear
all
you
can
make
this
bigger
and
stack
it.
No
here
we're
talking
about
minimal
absolute
minimal
effort
that
it
becomes
a
practical
thing
that
you
would
want
to
start
with
a
five
by
five
as
entry
level
get
going
with
that
make
some
money
and
then
buy
yourself,
the
next
section.

holes
in
metal
are
not
not
an
easy
thing.
You
either
have
to
torch
them,
you
might
you
can
drill
them
with
a
mag
drill
or
with
a
one
inch
drill
bit.
If
you
drill
with
a
one
inch
drill
bit
say
in
quarter-inch
steel,
you
can't
really
do
that.
You
have
to
start
with
a
smaller
hole
like
half-inch
and
then
go
up
3/4,
maybe
one
because
you'd
rip
them
out.

It
just
doesn't
work
that
well,
okay,
but
if
you
can
avoid
holes
in
metal,
that's
a
lot
of
work
and
the
other
part
about
holes
is
they
got
to
be
exactly
at
the
right
place,
otherwise
things
won't
fit.
So
if
you
use
a
design
where
you're
hanging
things
on
to
the
rain,
that
gives
you
absolute
flexibility
for
prototyping
than
for
real
use
and
in
the
case
of
the
current
3d
printer,
we're
actually
hanging
the
z-axis
so
they're
flat
on
them.
You
can
flexibly
move
them
side
to
side.

as
we
go
further,
we
go
more
and
more
into
easy,
modularity,
Construction,
Set
approach,
which
were
known
for
and
making
that
absolutely
practical,
practical,
even
at
the
larger
scale
of
a
torch
table.
Now
the
other
way
to
do
that
is
use
weldments
and
holes.
But
in
this
time
around
we
don't
have
that
detail
drawn
and
I
would
suggest.
We
actually
look
at
a
way
to
hang
it
because
3d
printing,
now
we've
got
the
new
OSE
extruder,
with
a
simple
on
that.

If
you
use
one
millimeter
nozzles
like
point
eight
or
or
one
millimeter
nozzles,
those
parts
that
are
that
would
fit
around
four
by
four
inch
tubes.
They
would
print
fast
in
an
hour
too
if
you've
got
a
one,
millimeter
nozzle
volcano
heater
block,
so
you're
you're
printing
about
five
pounds
per
day
print
rates.
According
to
the
other
lecturer
on
the
economics
of
3d
printing,
so
production
rates
using
standard
off-the-shelf
printers
these
days
commonly
accessible,
you
can
print
about
five
pounds
of
plastic
per
day.

So,
if
you
think
about
hung
pieces
on
a
frame,
maybe
it's
like
a
half
a
pound.
So
it's
going
to
take
you
a
few
hours.
If
you
have
multiple
printers,
you
can
go
from
the
CAD
to
the
prototypes
on
day
time,
skills
or
our
time
frames.
So
it
could
become
a
real,
real
time,
prototyping
exercise.
But
you
can't
use
your
point.
Four
millimeter
nozzles,
the
speed
of
printing
goes
as
R
squared
the
radius
of
the
nozzle
squared
or
diameter
squared.
So,
for
example,
for
a
point,
four
nozzle.

do
that,

the

share
my

the
design
rationale
for
how
this
torch
table
is
coming
together.
So,
first
of
all
we're
designing
this
to
be
not
only
for
production
right
now
for,
but
also
to
make
it
easy
to
produce
kits
so
there's
a
big
heavy
frame.
You
know
we
may
ship
that
as
a
complete
kit
that
would
be
Freight
like
heavy
Freight,
so
pretty
much
like
500
bucks
or
so
for
shipping.

say
anywhere
in
around
the
States
using
freight
trucks,
because
this
thing
will
be
five
by
five
modules.
That's
sizable
and
heavy,
probably
like
500
pounds
for
the
finished
machine,
five
hundred
to
a
thousand
pounds
or
something
to
that
effect,
don't
know
the
details.
Yet
we're
gonna
build
this
around
five.

quarter
quarter
inch
wall,
4x4
tubing
of
which
we
have
plenty
of
supply,
so
we
can
weld
a
frame
out
of
that.
But
when
we
do
this,
we'll
think
about
how
do
we
make
this
easy
to
kit
so
easy
to
assemble?

so
you
can
do
this
both
in
so-called
centralized
production
or
distributed
production,
or
we
ship
out
kits
that
are
easy
to
build
and
once
again
it's
very
easy
to
build,
hung
parts,
Universal
axes
well
prepared
modules
and
all
that
so
then
the
tation
for
anyone
who's
listening
to
this
is
also
we're
doing
this
this
whole
week.
So

frame
is
made
of
four
by
four
two
being

concept
here
is
that
I'm

to

we
can
make
a
separate
gantry
and
a
separate
waterbed,

both
of
these
two
need
to
be
pretty
heavy,
so
the
structure
needs
to
happen
for
the
gantry,
because
you
need
precise
motion.
Relatively
precise

mean
word
about
precision,
we're
talking
up
to
like

or

to
3
millimeters.
Precision
like
1/8
one
sick,
not
not

less
than
that

about
so
about

precision
is
all
we
ever
need
for
CNC
torch,
cutting
due
to
the
curve
of
torch,
cutting
itself.

be
fine,
or
even

for
smaller
nozzles,
so
you're
talking,
plus
minus
1.5

plus
minus
0.3
millimeters,
so
think
about

need

hang

gantry

solid
foundation,

solid
frame,

the

tubing
absolutely
gets
you

gantry
no
problem

simple
four-sided
structure,
not
even
a
brace
in
the
middle,
simple
four-sided
structure,
easy
enough
to
hang
a
frame.

gantry

Super
simple,
ok,
great!
What
about
the
bed
now?
The
bed
is
actually
where
you're
gonna
need
to
have
more
strength.
Why?
A
The
gantry
is
the
lightweight
part,
but
what
about
the
metal
that
you're
gonna
put
on
it
so
we're
talking
about
putting
up
to
like
common
will
be
half-inch
steel.
So
if
you,
if
you've
got
a
four
by
four
foot,
piece
of
half-inch
steel,
half-inch
weighs
20
pounds
per
square
foot,
so
you're
talking
about
in
the
4x4
version,
320
pounds
that
are
resting
on
the
table.

If
you're
doing
half-inch
steel,
that's
gonna,
be
the
common
use
case
say
for
making
tractor
parts,
brick
press
parts,
but
that's
of
course,
not
all
if
you're
gonna
be
building
an
ironworker
machine.
You're
gonna
be
talking
about
three
inch:
steel
and
three
inch:
steel,
there's
gonna
be
1800
pounds
per
4x4
sheet,
so
you're
talking
track
loading
with
a
track.
So
in
other
words,
what
I'm
trying
to
say
here
is
that
the
base,
the
waterbeds
section
that
part
is
gonna,
be
extra
heavy-duty.

if
we
use
quarter
inch,
4x4
steel,
yeah,
that's
getting
like
2,000
pounds
already
I
think
we
can
do
that
quite
readily.
We
might
need
a
brace
down
the
middle
for
the
water
bed
part.
But
that's
that's
the
idea!
Think
about
strength.
Now
we
have
the
other
option
of
using
half
inch
wall,
4x4
tubing
that
exists
readily
off-the-shelf
too,
but
I
think
with
quarter
inch,
4x4
to
being
thousand
pound
scale
weights
using
just
a
simple
four
by
four
foot
frame
external
four
pieces
of
metal,
just
weld
it
together
cannot
get
any
simpler
than
that.

scaling
the
two
pieces
putting
the
two
pieces
together.
The
concept
is
if
the
waterbed
were
at
the
bottom,
there's
no
easy
way
to
join
to
five
five
by
five
sections.
Next

each
other,
you'd
always
have
that
rib
in
the
middle,
the
the
between
the
two
sections
you
gotta
put
the
water
on
top,
so
think
about
that.
But
let's
start
with
that
weight
of
the
water
is
not
not
too
high;
no,
not
didn't!

we
