Excellent, first of all, how did you, how did you find out about osc? How long have you known about us.

You know what I've been following you on and off for quite a few years. Okay, I did an art foundation degree before my um electronics degree. I did. It was like a year course in london and um I was really interested in like engineers to spend their spare time doing creative projects, and I found out about about what you were doing and then years and years later I just stumbled across you again yeah and made incredible progress.

Awesome awesome was the first degree that you got what what's that your year degree.

B

So it's it's a foundation course. So um what it's just like um in between, like when you leave college- and you start um university okay in the uk, like you, get this like um year, foundation, art degree where they, where you kind of like spend a year, exploring those different creative topics and kind of the idea, is to settle on one find the one that you're most interested in following.

You made a distinction between college and university when you say college: do you mean our high school here.

B

So we have six form um which is like after you finish school.

B

You spend two years going to sixth form where you do your a levels and that's kind of optional, so some people don't go to do their a levels they leave school at that point and they may take like a vocational course or something like that where you do your a levels which is kind of more like, I guess, academic and you you choose like three or four subjects, to study in depth and then once you've done that for two years you go on to university.

B

You can go into university if you wish, but when you do a crate, if you, if, if you do a creative degree, there's an additional year in there, which is like it's where you spend say like two weeks working in a different area, so you may be like 3d design for two weeks, you may do graphic design like fine art, sculpture whatever for two weeks, and then the idea is the end of the year. You pick one to go into.

Now that's so you mentioned the word college. Is that called college.

B

So it was that it just dropped out expecting.

A

You said the word college. You say that level eight is that college.

B

I guess it's stick, sport. We call, it sticks boom college. So it's like you finish school. You go to sixth form. You can't go to. Sixth, one college. You spend two years there studying, say four subjects: yeah, okay,.

Yeah, that sounds good.

um Are you still studying right now.

B

No so I finished, um I actually did an engineering degree like about 10 years ago, electronic engineering um with like it was like focused on audio technology.

B

So I really enjoyed my time in the studio, but I found it frustrating in terms of like well, I I was looking for like maybe at the time a bit more like creative, so I'm actually now a professional like designer, um and I kind of after I left my degree. I kind of learned that on the job, mostly to be honest, how to do the design side of things, but knowing about electronics really helped, because I do like a lot of digital design, a lot of um websites software things like that.

So the engineering like just having the general backgrounds, technical backgrounds and massive help.

So what kind of.

C

Design, do you typically do.

B

User experience, design and that's very, like um jargony, but so hard, so I'll, try and explain it in a different way. So I help to take new product ideas or technologies and humanize that make it like take off. The sharp edges make it easier for people to to use kind of.

Is that software side, or is it actual product physical product side,.

B

So pretty much everything I worked on by side. I I've always had like a strong desire to work like more more hardware side of things. I've been lucky recently been doing a few more creative software projects that have had small element of hardware in them. So that's where we've been using the the pen plotter to make some work, we're doing. We've also kind of someone else in the team is building a sensor box, an open source sensor box and we're taking that data and populating a map with it.

So the 3d printer might come in handy in that, but already we're kind of using the the pen plotter to to print generative, artwork or coding.

Yeah yeah yeah, that's cool.

uh So what languages do you know like? Do you know python or like what.

B

Like I, I know a little bit of c and a little bit of javascript and.

Mostly, what you use.

C

On a job for uh your work, what language is that.

B

I don't even quit really to be honest anymore, like most of what I do. I use design tools. I I guess yeah do do a bit of like creative coding, where I like use some javascript or something like that or use a library like that, just to try out an idea yeah, but most of the time I'm just kind of like hacking stuff, together with with um software that allows you to you, know, make clickable prototypes and links and um do a bit of creative coding here and there. Okay, love.

Scripts, so let's dive into the the framework for uh regarding the 3d printers and what we're about so I.

Mean the first thing to be said: is we actually.

C

So we do what's known as distributive enterprise, so we want people to do our stuff. It's it's really about, basically, unlocking all the scarcity that's around in the world, so train people to do real things start real enterprises with it. So, for example, the 3d printers that we make. We encourage people to start a business with it, and so, for example, if you have you got the the printer, we would encourage you if you're ambitious, to actually start producing them or parts of them for us.

Or as a business that you run yourself like for us, we're interested in running workshops.

In the european countries right, so if, if you'd, like the I mean the invitation, is there that you would actually produce the parts like say it's just the 3d printed parts.

A

Full setup I mean, if you, if you'd like to do that, so that opportunity definitely exists and we want to develop that. We envision this collaborative.

Network, where we have a lot of different producers around the world who are.

C

Making a living doing this stuff, so that's definitely an invitation so, for example, with the the machine that you got so the d3d the eight inch print bed, one there's also we built a large one. Let me show you this this other one. If you want to click on the link here, so there you go. If you see the chat box, so, for example, you can build larger or other machines with the 3d printer like, for example, the torch table or the larger 3d printer. Like this exact same technology, uh did you see the link?

um The exact same technology, if you click on that item number 18, well, that's just showing some build pictures, but basically the the machine. That's this! It has an 18 by 18 print bed, yep this the same technology that you're using identical like no, not even any different parts. Just longer larger members like the bed is, that is larger. For example, the print bed is massively like 18 by 18 inches. So you actually use multiple heater elements in there, but that kind of technology.

You can build exactly with what you have what you're learning in terms of this build here and we're looking at probably.

Making that more of our flagship product- because it's just so much more powerful.

C

Like if you can print 18-inch size things I mean, that's just leaves you that's almost like. You know real, that's real product size. You can build a lot of a lot more things like, for example, we printed these 12-inch gear down wheels like we will use for the precious plastic-like filament maker for shredder plastic shredder. It's like you can make gear downs. You can make belts. If you have this kind of size access, it's it's definitely better, but yeah. The idea is the scalability modularity. Is there so you can like, for example, with a printer.

um You can go to the torch table and then the torch table gets you parts for building tractors and things so that's kind of, like general overview, if you're interested in all that ecology like this is a start. If you want to really want to dive into it, but for now, let's just go right into the into the design so get you started on the build.

Did you want to talk about any specific things right now, like any questions about osc or.

B

um I just I guess I just want to add: no, no. No I've had time to think about your questions. um Yeah. I guess really.

B

It is really in line with what I'd like to do going forward with my my business and obviously ever following um openstack quality for a while, and I really am interested in open source business models, how that can actually work, and this is kind of a serious experimentation for my business and how I could maybe look to open up working with physical things and in new markets in a more collaborative way, because I think that business doesn't need to change.

Yeah yeah and on a.

C

Business front the latest for us is like we know. The biggest challenge we've seen on the business front is that it just takes a lot of effort to do a solid product development. So that's why a lot of open source projects are not products they're still projects. It's very.

B

Hard, it's like what it's really hard to take. You know those projects and and make it into a sustainable business.

C

It is, it is um so in order to do that, we just got to go all out and create like the next thing. The next milestone for us is to do a very large collaborative design event where we actually work explicitly on the business model, but now this is for a bigger project. That's for the house, the cdca home. That's that's what we're gonna work on, but basically gather a whole bunch of people and produce a whole big manual.

Okay, here's how you run the actual business, here's how you produce all the parts, here's how you go through: building codes and train people and all those details that are a whole whole other side after you have the product design. So we we've got a product and it's like I live in one, but about getting that out to the public.

C

That's a totally different game and that's that's that level that we're working on and experimenting, but but you have to the the thing we found out is that you really have to put in a lot of effort upfront. So just like companies might have this funding of a million or a few million bucks.

I mean we really have to do the same, but the difference being is is that we attract the crowds and do that through a crowdfunded way, where the people who participate in the prod project are the actual stakeholders that build it. So for the house, everyone that's participating, they're interested in building that house according to our our techniques at a low cost. So that's the experiment for next year, so we can talk more about that without having the results, but we're just planning for a big one.

Let's go to: let's go straight to the the 3d printer click on the second link I put in so the build instructions, so I think I think you have that link, if not just make a note of that. So.

Build instructions, click on edit inside the manual. Let's just go, let me actually share the screen, so you can follow where I'm at so I can walk you through a little bit of it. So you got your kit, you opened it up and you inventoried it. You had some parts that I think we addressed yeah, um but let me share my screen so that you can just follow where I am in the manual so the length I sent. You looks like this: um let's do a little larger, so yeah the build.

That's that's kind of like what it looks. What it looks like it have you looked at this this manual yet.

B

Oh yeah, I've had it. I've had a really rough overview of it, but I haven't read it in detail.

C

Yeah so essentially it's it walks you through the steps. The first step would be to build the frame then build the axes. So you get to this stage, so we've got details on the frame. How all that goes together kind of like a little uh diagram of what the parts are and then some details about how you put the frame together.

It should be pretty transparent, so you can get to this point going to this one. That's that should be pretty easy and then, after that, you've got the axes which there's a bunch of videos here, that's from older models but they're animations of how the pieces go together. So you can take a look at that now. You have just remind me: did I send you the parts which are in two pieces or the one piece uh 3d printed pieces, because here the? What I show here is where you've got two clam shell halves coming together.

Do you have the you have those right where it's two halves that come together.

That looks like a.

Oh yeah sorry show me that yeah yeah yeah, okay, you still got that because since then we actually uh went to this so this picture here, though it looks identical like, but basically we printed out all the pieces as one piece as opposed to two piece, simply because it makes it simpler.

So that's the evolution since, since we thought we just implemented that it does help, because then you have so many less parts to work with, like you're, literally having the number of pieces that you're working with, so it does make it um easier, but like, for example, uh what's not easier is that, for example, for the carriage piece, if you make it printed in one piece, you have to close the bearings that are inside the carriage here, so you need this.

Other piece of the carriage piece is actually a little more complicated, but to get a feeling for how you build the axis, you can take a look at all these videos. They kind of get you the general idea, but the idea is it's the universal axis. So if we take a look at universal axis, this is it. It simply. Is you have the motor side? You've got the carriage which does the motion and the other idler side where here actually have this thinner, idler piece, but basically there's an idler that sits in there.

That's that's the idea, and this.

Is a precision motion system right there, so you make make actually total of five of them: two two y's two z's and then an x between the y's, but that should be pretty transparent. um You have more pictures like here kind of how the whole gantry goes together.

Pieces that look like this so, for example, on the motor side, you've got a piece that looks like this and you should be able to kind of like put all the pieces together and figure out like once. You have. The axes hung on them on the frame. You can kind of see how it goes together.

So that's the side away from the motor side. It's like that.

And then, after that, so the other part is um there's the heat bed. So on page 26 I can click on this link here.

So the full build like yeah like the heat bed from 2019- that's probably the best one. You want to take a look at. If we go to that that post you got in the build sequence, you see how people are putting together. I think right now, so that's like uh uh that's rock wool that you have in your your thing and you gotta make this element. So it looks like that empty and uh far as bunch more details of build flow. Let's see, let's get back out of there.

uh Here's a like in this in this one, this older one or also show like the whole, build procedure. So that's a bunch of pictures here, so you essentially have a core of a heater element, and then you wind, the nichrome around that inner core of four feet.

This is different because now we've got the plug. You've got the plug in this, so you don't have to mess with that part, um but basically there's more details. So this one's not fully detailed, either I'll show you this one. So it's all on a page that I linked there, um perhaps the top one here which shows like the very detail. So first you you cut the. I think you got one length of of this fiberglass sleeve, so you gotta cut it into the forefoot and then the longer piece.

But basically this is this is the key that so basically you're wrapping this this nichrome around the inner inner core and you can do it by hand or you can like put it in a cordless drill and try to spin it. But since you got just like one just you can probably do it just by hand. It'll take you like 15 minutes to wrap it all around, but basically get those 14. I believe it's 14 feet of nichrome around four feet, so you're basically shrinking its distance from that much too much less.

But that's that's the deal. So that's the actual heater core and then around it. So you got this thing prepared um just basically gotta wind, it sleeve it in through the outer one. So stick it in through the other one, so you're putting an insulation around it now uh right now. So the only thing that's! I mentioned this in uh an actual diagram here, but here on page 26, uh there's uh what we're using now.

So after you have the this is a bunch of these heater elements that I made, but uh you have a solid fence wire on the end and all you do at the end.

C

Is oh actually, I'm going to add another one to this heat bed build so so there's another detail which I just took recently so heat bed from the d3d universal.

C

So we added the d3d, the heatbed to the d30 universal and that.

Hi hi yeah we're going through the manual. So let me let me just continue so I'm recording this, so you can actually review what we we've talked about regarding start of the build procedure and other stuff, but let's.

See it's on d3d universal there's in the build instructions. We have um yeah. Actually I'm going to link to this, but there's a good detail that shows the close-up of.

How the heater element looks this, is this is kind of like more like what you're going to be doing, because this is the? Let me expand that here.

C

So you have these high temperature wires, so here you're you're wrapping the nichrome like in picture five. Here, that's what you're doing! That's, how the detail looks and that's the best connection, because the nichrome is hot, super hot.

C

So if you connect it directly to to the copper it'll burn it out, so we're just using this little inter inter stem piece, just this little piece of solid fence wire to make it make that not happen and never burn out.

C

So you, if you have your your element, wrapped around like in seven here, then you just just basically wrap it around the end put a little hook on it and that's a really good connection there, because that that connection sticks doesn't come out unless you pull it super hard which doesn't happen, and you don't use solder there. Why? Because it would melt, I mean solders typically melt for if you talk about nichrome heater on this, this.

One's designed actually to.

Go up to a thousand fahrenheit, so it's pretty hot, um like 530c, but that's the detail. I'm going to put this link so I'm going to actually copy ctrl c and say the 3d universal, build c detail at cd2.

Here, yeah, so so you can take a look at that. There's more details there, but um I think if you go through all these because you've got all this documentation from all the different builds. Here's more details of how things went again and here I think I'll- show you what we did uh before, but in.

Now, where the pictures were all the pictures.

No, I don't, maybe not there.

Yeah, like this bed, this guy, that's the big bed, but it's got the same technique that that should be doing here. I showed how the heater element burnt out. So that's where we started using the oh. We had a short somewhere there, so we you can repair it, um but that's what uh once you fire this thing up?

C

It will kind of get a little brown because it gets to a thousand, but um so right now your heater element is 400 watts and that's makes for a pretty quick bed that should be pretty pretty transparent, like with all these uh details on this you'll see, basically, you've got the heater core. You put the sleeve around that to insulate it, and you make sure you have those those solid metal wires that you're just wrapped to before. You go to this, this 200c wire, which which connects to your your controller.

So that's kind of the anatomy there um and.

After that, you got.

Wiring, but I think maybe what we should do is uh probably um you know work on getting to this point here like where you got where you got this, so that's the frame plus the axes and then the the heater element in bed, and maybe what we should do is talk after that after you get all that built and get you hooked up to how to do the controller, but it is pretty fully documented if you go to page there's a good wiring manual here on length from slide 25.

So you see all the connections and then there's a whole link there with a bunch of pictures of um there's five pages here. So that's just the general control panel, how it looks just kind of all the parts.

uh Here's the ramps microcontroller, all the connections to that here. You actually show pictures of where all the wires plug in more details of where they all plug in- and you have to worry about this because that's already connected like that.

So by following these four pictures, you should be pretty much able to do it and then there's a startup procedure to do it, but, but probably if well you said you might be good on wiring. Maybe I don't know, but uh if you want to take a stab at it, if not, if you don't have enough detail, don't feel you have enough detail, you can. Let me know on that, but right now, the manual. It's not. I mean it's kind of like a summary manual. It doesn't have like exhaustive, step-by-step thing.

um I don't know if you're any good at if you're a designer, you think you can take a copy of that and you think you can fill in some details that are missing or that's beyond you. If there's.

So what we can do is uh what I can do. What I like doing is just do a copy of this.

We keep logs like that, like, for example, uh you know like on my log like I, you can follow exactly everything that I do like. We have all what just a timeline of everybody. I just put up an entry with just the length for every single thing. I do so. You can completely collaborate like that with a bunch of people just keeping their logs. So, for example, if I want to see like what you're doing well, I know you got.

I know this now so if, if I want to follow what you did, then I can just do that and then what I actually did too is. I just put that link on my lock, so I know that if we talked like today, I I can keep track of it by day so thursday.

And then I have that so I can get to it with one click. If I lose my bearings on the wiki, so just put that on my log and click on that and there I go so so we're set up for that um yeah yeah yeah! um Oh wait! I wasn't!

uh I'll, send you a link to your log there, so you can access the document and um go from there. So what else do we want to cover so so regarding starting the build, I think so you have you think you have pretty much all the parts and you were looking at starting to do that, build when.

Well start with the frame.

uh Use a mallet because it might be like hard to get the corners into the the metal into the corners. So you use a hammer like if you have a piece of wood just bang into it, but mark the mark. The ends like mark the ends of the the metal.

And make sure it goes.

Yeah, you might.

Need to like clean it out.

A little bit um yeah, we print with really large nozzles, so typically the the prints are somewhat messy. This is not like point four. This is 1.2 nozzles, so it's pretty strong, but it's. It can kind of be messy a lot of times.

On the metal pieces mark it at like 1.5 inches at the end, so you know how? Deep, because when you bang it in like you're, not gonna, know where you are so just mark them.

So yeah how deep.

And that kind of stuff, so probably you can.

Yeah and use a mallet they're like if you're gonna, bang it because you're probably gonna, need to bang on it pretty hard and just use a block of wood, so you're, not wacky yeah. That sounds good.

Yeah yeah, so I was telling john that we like to have people like if you want to build it and build this thing. If you like this printer and you say like wow, this is cool. That would be a great enterprise start, making it you're well you're welcome to do it. We can buy parts from you like if we're actually running workshops in in europe, we'd love to do it, because, right now we can't it's like it's too hard to ship stuff to europe with.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to printing some prototype designs like and potentially expanding the business beyond software and into like physical prototypes. Definitely.

We've got some relatively decent videos. On I mean we all use free cad uh if you want to learn it, but we do have some good instructionals on that, so you can learn it like. I can take a person and like in one hour, would get them to design a print for 3d printing.

So if you do the, if you really study the videos, you can pretty much do that. We show this basic workflow that.

You to do that, it's not.

That hard, as long as you don't have prejudice.

That you're, like oh I'm, used to some other software. Now I don't want to learn this like we get a lot of people who are experienced in other stuff and they're like what is this. This is crazy, but if we find that actually people who learn learn freecat from scratch can learn it faster.

So the very first like I mean it's probably too far to go actually um we're waiting until we get it further. I was going to talk about like the um the the pen filter attachment. Let's wait.

Yeah yeah, we we've got some instructions on how to do that. So we use inkscape to generate the plots, but yeah you can just uh just the the extruder has got an attachment for the pen. So it's so you just screw the pen in and that's it so you've got the did. I send you the I sent you the finished extruder right or is it? Is it completely disassembled.

This is the extruded parts I believe. Are you gonna be difficult to show you so I've got like.

Oh yeah yeah, oh okay, okay, that, oh okay, so what you're gonna need to do is actually print yourself, a different yeah. You can! Okay, that's I I forgot we still! So that's the titan arrow, which you got one of the last titan errors, but we've actually switched to uh we designed another one which is the universal gearless for you to do the plotter. You just have to print out a pen pen holder, so you will be that does not have the pen holder attached to it with a new version.

We have the pen holder attached to it um and we move to it because it's all open source design, so we designed it. It works really. Well, um you can actually print like once you get this one built. I mean you can print the parts for the new one pretty easily and then assemble the new one, because all the parts that you've got in this one will make you the new one.

Okay, amazing yeah, that's why I chose this printer because, even though, like mainly the need now is or um a template of this product, I'm working on potentially some 3d printing for cases and stuff- and that's where I want to move to this platform- allows me to extend it and also gives you new business options.

Yeah, absolutely so, like the pieces of metal you're holding, you extend those and you can make a much larger printer. So that's that's the good.
