KBE Insider interviews Katie Gamanji, Sr. Kubernetes Field Engineer at Apple and how she got started in open source and the community. Katie updates us on her latest involvement with OpenUK as well as CNCF as a member of the Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) and leading the creation of the Kubernetes & Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification exam. We also talk to Katie about how more people can start contributing to the community.

unique
interview,
so
definitely
couldn't
miss
it
out
as
an
experience
in
terms
of
myself
I'm,
currently
a
senior
field
engineer
for
apple
and
pretty
much
I'm
trying
to
bring
the
kubernetes
and
Cloud
native
expertise
to
different
products
and
teams
within
Apple.
However,
I've
been
involved
in
Cloud
native
for
a
very
long
time.

was

contributor
being
part

multiple
cigs
and
working
groups
which
I'm
doing
as
well,
but
I
would
like
to
steer
a
bit
of
the

decisions

actually
be
more

visionary

terms

what
tools
can
be
within
the
cncf
and
what
tools
can
be
the
right
or
the
kind
of
The
Cutting
Edge
technology
that
the
community
can
adopt
and
being
in
the
TOC.
You
actually
get
that
opportunity
not
only
to
interact
with
the
latest
like
the
newest
startup
companies,
but
to
actually
help
them
to.

part
of
the
the
landscape
so
pretty
much.
We
are
steering
this
technical
vision
for
for
the
ecosystem
and
I
like
that,
very
much
so
being
the
TUC
I
think
it's
a
very
privileged
position.
It's
only
11
of
us
in
total
and
we
have
a
two-year
term
base
and
you
can
do
it
only
twice,
but
you
yeah
definitely
with
silver
privilege
to
be
in
that
position
and
to
actually
influence
from
that.
From
that
regard,
what's
keeping
me
here,
the
community
I
I
couldn't
emphasize
that
enough.

It's
always
meeting
people
from
all
around
the
world
different
companies.
They
have
such
a
diverse
experience
in
terms
of
adopting
technology
and
using
it,
but
it's
always
nice
to
connect
and
actually
explore
how
they
do
things
and
why
they
do
things
so
I
think
that
is
never
something
that
isn't
like.
That's
always
going
to
surprise
me,
that's
what
I'm
trying
to
say
yeah.

you
know

of
course,
there's
some,

you're
doing
exactly
in
your
internal
organization
or
whatever
is
often
secret,
but
you
can
kind
of
talk
about
it
in
concept.

think
that's
a
really

nice
way
to

of
you

grow,
your
own
expertise

drove
me
about
container

because

developer

worked

a
container
and
like
try
something
out
and
you

worry

which
is
basically
this
wall

what

like
it's

messages

like
using
the
mix
of
flower
pots,
because
everything
all
the
containers
are
different.
But
at

same
time

shipping
containers
what's
different,

them

together

that's
a
feature
as

hope

I
believe
right

a
lot
to
do
with
the
change
in
the
industry
in
general
to

so
much
more
sophisticated,
and
it's
been
a
really
good
thing,
because

things
I

software
is
like
people
compare
it
to
like
building
a
building,
but
it's
really
not
it's
much
more.
Like
writing
a
book
in
that
you
rewrite
rewrite
rewrite
rewrite.

it
falls
down
and
people
yeah
it's
not
the
best
comparison
so
and
but
the
the
kicker
right.
Unlike
writing
a
book
I,
guess
you
kind
of
do
with
a
book,
but
the
kickers.
We
can
actually
test
it.
You
know,
without
you
know,
a
car
going
over
a
bridge
and
falling
in
the
river,
so
you
know
and
being
able
to
make
that
a
fully
automated
process
such
that
the
humans
can
just
focus
on
the
parts
they
need
to
work
on.

think
when
it
comes
to
automation,
I
think
within
the
scenes
yeah
it's
great
like
what
I
would
really
like
to
see
is
to
make
it
more
human
friendly,
because
I
mean
yaml
is
great.
Yeah
like
there
are
many
people
who
assume
the
ammo
engineer
title
and
like
that's,
why
they
do
they
they
full-time
job
and
it's
fine.
Yaml
is
good.
However,
it
should
be
more
readable
and
it's
not
just
within
the
kubernetes,
but
like
other
tools
that
we
integrate
with
with
our
infrastructure.

I
really
would
like
to
see
in
more
simplified
developer
experience.
All
the
way
through
I
mean
it's
great.
It's
been
doing,
you
know
a
great

actually
change
kubernetes,
Industries
and
sectors
across
the
world

I

think
when
it
comes
to
like
the
next
stage.

would
really
like
to
say
that
more
simplified
developer
experience
and
actually
make
it

no-brainer

just

of
situation.

least
what
it
meant

interacting
with

friend

amount
of

deployments

and
the
amount
of

you
change

like
decrease,
it
depends
what
you
want
to
do.

would
actually
have
an
influence
on
your
cluster,
so
it
can

team
of
five

six

us,

we
were
there

one
person
could
retire

the

emotions

definitely
think

words

all
day
every
day

so

think
it's

similar
kind

People
just
think
differently
and
so
I
think
the
more
ways
we
can
kind
of
find.

opportunities
to
let
more
people
kind
of
in
the
door
yeah.

one

things
I
mean
I
know

going
to
be
kind
of
a
plug
to
the
course.
But
what
I
worked
really
hard
on
is
provide
different
ways,
so
different
methodologies
to
transmit
information.

you

video.

have
like
right.
Like
written
text,
you
have
exercises
as.

just
you
know,
just
random
like
level
of
text
and
that's
it
but
like
getting
all
of
this
done.
I
hope
that
more
students
will
feel
more
closer
to
to
the
space
and
actually
get
involved.
I
really
like
one
of
my
motivations,
is
just
to
make
people
inclined
to
get
involved
and
be
part
of
the
community
and
then
once
they're
part
of
the
community.

it's
gonna
go
smoother

because
what
I
like
about
Cloud
native
is
it's
one
of
the
most
welcoming
Place
yeah,
and
it
doesn't
really
matter
where
you
work
or
where
you're
coming
from
it's
like.
As
long
as
you
kind
of
share
the
same
ideas
or
like
not
the
same
ideas,
but
you
want
to
continue.

know
if
you're,

you're
an
expert
in
something
you
know
that
doesn't,
and
you
can
do
a
little
bit
of
programming
you
can
with
serverless
right
you
can.
You
can
write
your
little
bit
without
truly
understanding.
You

kubernetes
cluster
works
right
and
that's
a
huge,
hugely
beneficial.
You
know
thing
to
do
because
that
way,
you
know
it's
also
kind
of
more
welcoming,
but
on
the
flip
side
of
it,
like
I,
think
it's
funny,

you

we
talk
about
the
positive
aspects
of
inclusion.

also
very
selfish
right
in
the
sense
that
I
really
really
want
more
perspectives
and
the
things
that
I
build
or
deliver
because
they'll
be
so
much
better.

they
can.

if,
for
example,
you
know
you're
talking

produce,
you
know
content
for
people
who
are
different
kinds
of
Learners
and
yourself.

I
think
lately
we
have
Asian
communities.
Doing
Cloud
native
I
mean
they've
been
part
of
the
community.
Quite
a
lot,
however,
for
them
to
adopt
there
is
an
actual
language
barrier
like
the
documentation
is
male
in
English,
but
everyone
is
proficient
in
English
and
there
have
been
a
lot
of
community
members
that
translated
our
kind
of
produced
or
written
books
about
kubernetes
and
their
own
local
language.
So
yesterday
the
contributor
Summit
one
of
them
was
actually
awarded
for
translating
or
pretty
much
closing
the
gap
between
English
and
Korean
speaking.

Way
of
learning-
and
that's
that's
where
I've
been
struggling
a
bit
with
with
Duolingo-
is
that
because
I'm
not
taking
a
proper
class
like
I,
can
totally
see
how
it'd
be
really
helpful
if
you
were
taking
it
along
with
a
class
I'm,
not
learning
a
lot
about
kind
of
like
how
the
language
works
as
much
as
like
how
to
say
this
sentence
and
and
I
think
I'm,
definitely
getting
some
gaps
there.
You
know,
but
you
know
that's
kind
of
their
teaching
style
right.

it's
been
great
I'm
part
of
the
leadership
team
at

moment,
focusing
on
the
future
Founders

trying
to
get
any
new
Talent
from

the
UK
and

identify
them
and
just
make
sure

involved
in
open
source
early
on.

that's
what
I'm
doing
with
them.

ambassador
program

then
we
have
the
leadership

people

mainly
or
the
the
financial
part
of
it.
It's
just

It

well

American

you
pick

title

another
country
because
we're
not
allowed
to
have
titles,

Americans

I

it's
still
true

honorary
thing,
sometimes
for
like
being
knighted
but
yeah.
So
that's
supposed
used
to
be
true.
You
also
used
to
not
be
able
to
be
a
dual
citizen
with
the
US.
