This demo shows how Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization, a feature of Red Hat OpenShift, allows you to run and manage virtual machine (VM) and container workloads side by side.

OpenShift Virtualization is a feature of OpenShift, when deployed on bare metal servers, to host virtual machines alongside containers in the same cluster. They can connect to the SDN, consume PVCs, and do many of the other things that Pods do - but also have VM behavior like live migration.

Ian Pilcher joins us this week to show some capabilities of OpenShift Virtualization and how it might fit into your application modernization strategy.

In this video we're going to demonstrate the migration of virtual machines from Red Hat Virtualization to OpenShift Virtualization using the latest Red Hat Migration Toolkit for Virtualization (MTV) solution.

Virtual machines have been a part of OpenShift since version 4.5, when OpenShift Virtualization was released as a fully supported feature for all entitlements. As OpenShift Virtualization has matured it has become more and more integrated with other features of OpenShift, such as Pipelines, Service Mesh, GitOps, and more.

This stream we’re joined by Chandler Wilkerson from the OpenShift integration team, to look at how we can use VM-based application components hosted in OpenShift in a more container-like way. Not all applications can be containerized, but that doesn’t mean we can’t use, consume, and manage them as if they are!

This video shows how to pass the GPU device of a worker node to a virtual machine in Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization. After the GPU is seen by the virtual machine, the driver is installed and tests are run to demonstrate the functionality works.

Virtual machines deployed to Red Hat OpenShift have the option of connecting to the SDN and utilizing the SDN functions the same as Pods. This means they can communicate with other Pods using Services and have Services describe how to access the virtual machine’s applications.

This video demonstrates connecting between Pods and VMs across the Red Hat OpenShift SDN, showing that whether in a container or a virtual machine, applications can seamlessly communicate when co-hosted in Red Hat OpenShift.

Installing an operating system to newly created virtual machines is tedious and error prone. It’s much easier, and faster, to use template images that are used as the base for each new virtual machine.

During this stream we'll review OpenShift Virtualization and then dive into the different ways of providing the operating system to a virtual machine: container image, DataVolume, and PXE. We'll also look at connecting applications deployed in virtual machines to other OpenShift components using Services and exposing them to the world using Routes.
