say
thank
you
very,
very
much
to
council
president
for
the
special
honor.
On
a
personal
note,
my
brother
was
a
an
attendee
former
student
at
Garrard
College
many
many
years
ago
and
I
shared
when
we
at
the
inaugural
welcoming
of
the
new
president,
how
he
literally
started
climbing
the
walls
there
at
Geauga
College
and
my
mother
was
smart
enough
to
take
him
out
before
he
was
booted.

Whereas
legal
challenges
were
begun
by
african-american
lawyer
and
then
fifth
District
City
Council
member
Raymond
and
paste
Alexander
in
the
1950s
as
a
legal
adviser
on
the
famous
Brown
versus
the
Board
of
Education
case
Alexander,
and
likely
anticipated
a
favorable
Supreme
Court
ruling
in
that
case,
which
would
bode
well
for
his
campaign
against
Gerard
colleges.
Racial
ban,
whereas
after
making
its
way
to
the
courts
without
hearing
oral
arguments,
the
United
States
Supreme
Court
unanimously
reversed
the
ruling
by
the
Supreme
Court
of
Pennsylvania.
Upholding
the
border
city.

decision
to
deny
admission
to
two
african-american
boys,
citing
the
guidelines
catified
in
Steven
Gerrard's,
will,
however,
in
an
effort
to
circumvent
the
integration
of
Gerar
college,

Supreme
Court's

the
ruling

Supreme
Court
refused
to
hear
an
appeal
of
the
Third
Circuit
Court
ruling,
thus
paving
the
way
for
the
integration
of
Gerard
College
and
whereas
brave
young
men,
Theodore,
Hicks,
William,
Dade,
Carl,
Riley
and
Owen
Gowens
third
personally
took
on
the
challenges
of
desegregating
Gerard
College
as
its
first
students
of
color
and
did
so
with
considerable
tenacity.
Strength
as
well
as
grace,
especially
zib.

remainder
of
the
2018-19
school
year.

this

therefore,
be
it
resolved
by
the
Council
of
the
city
of
Philadelphia
that
we
hereby
honor
recognize
and
celebrate
Jawara
college
one
as
50
years
of
said
desegregation
and
those
early
students
that
brave
the
racism
on
that
day.
Be
it
FURTHER,
RESOLVED
that
an
engrossed
copy
of
this
resolution
be
presented
to
draw
at
college's
new
president
and
all
those
assembled
and
those
who
fought
tirelessly
to
desegregate
the
Jawara
college.
