Philadelphia-area elected officials gathered at City Hall on Monday, October 31, 2016 to discuss ongoing efforts to address concerns about lead-levels, lead safety and the impact of lead contamination on children.
Here, Council President Darrell Clarke (5th District) and State Senator Vincent Hughes (7th District) discuss the importance of state and federal resources to addressing lead safety and infrastructure issues statewide and nationwide.

morning,
first
of
all,
I
would
like
to
thank
the
senator
both
views
and
haywood
for
the
great
work
that
they've
done
and
bringing
us
all
together.
I
genuinely
believe
in
the
collective
we
and
I
want
to
thank
all
the
supporters
and
I
want
to
thank
the
press.
Sometimes
we
don't
necessarily
have
the
greatest
relationship
with,
but
they
have
brought
to
bear
something
that
we've
all
known
to
some
degree,
but
sometimes
that
spotlight
needs
to
be
put
on
a
particular
issue
to
make
sure
that
there's
actually
something
done
about
that
issue.

I'm
going
to
go
off
script
a
little
bit
this
issue
as
an
issue,
as
we
said
earlier,
that
everybody
has
known
to
some
degree
has
been
going
on
for
some
time.
But
it's
not
just
this
issue.
There's
an
underlying
issue
with
respects
to
municipalities
and
I'd
like
to
speak
on
behalf
of
municipality
Zand.
Mayor
can't
be
here
today,
but
I'm
speaking
on
his
behalf.

Erosion
of
federal
and
state
funding
for
municipality,
so
I'm
glad
we're
here
together
we
won't
have
to
work
together.
This
has
to
be
an
aggressive
push
to
get
revenue.
There
is
not
an
app
on
your
iPhone
and,
in
my
case,
blackberry
I'm.
Probably
only
people
that
you
can
say
well
do
an
inspection
on
2012
lambridge
street.
That's
not
going
to
happen.
You
got
to
send
a
person
out
there
right.
There
is
not
a
nap
when
you
can
say
input
this
particular
information
from
somebody
working
over
the
msb.

simple
reality
is:
it
calls
for
people
it
calls
for
inspectors.
It
calls
for
all
the
things
necessary
to
make
sure
that
this
issue
is
resolved
not
just
on
this
particular
issue,
but
all
the
issues
so
I'm
glad
that
we
have
friends
in
the
State
House,
both
senate
and
house,
and
we
now
have
a
new
friend
want
to
the
Congress
to
make
sure
that
those
revenues
come
to
the
city
of
Philadelphia
municipality.
Senator
huge
talked
about
Altoona
right,
so
nobody
knew
the
Altoona
head.
This
problem,
Frank
it's
a
little
small
city.

I
know
it's
a
train,
stop
there.
You
know,
but
other
than
that.
That's
not
going
to
be
in
some
of
these.
Some
of
these
broader,
broader
issues
as
it
relates
to
the
media,
so
I
want
to
thank
everybody,
said
it
and
both
senator
Hughes
and
hey.
What
I
want
to
thank
you
guys
for
pulling
together.

saw
you
saturday
night
said
we
won't
get
together
and
I
want
to.

Thank
my
colleagues
because
we
are
on
the
front
line
because
we're
the
most
accessible
elected
officials
in
the
city
of
Philadelphia
and
in
the
statement
people
going
to
literally
come
to
the
council
chambers
and
leaned
over
the
rail
and
touch
you
on
the
path.
You
know
how
much
we
like
to
love
that
right,
but
the
simple
reality
is:
is
that
the
buck
always
stops
here
and
be
at
school
district?
Be
it
this
issue
or
any
other
issues,
so
I
want
to
thank
them
so
much
for
putting
in
place
the
necessary
regulatory
process.

But
at
the
end
of
the
day,
we
need
money
for
the
administrative
branch
to
enact
both
the
regulatory
and
enforcement
issues.
So
I
want
to
thank
everybody
here
today
and
hopefully,
out
of
this
come
together
a
and
the
somebody
call
for
a
task
force
to
make
sure
that
we
not
only
follow
up
on
the
regulatory
side,
but
we
figure
out
a
way
to
get
the
money
to
deal
with
this
issue
once
and
for
all.

No
no
one's
standing
here
thinks
that
this
problem
can
get
a
dress
without
resources.
Okay,
and
we
need
to
have
resources
and
council
president
you're
exactly
correct

support
from
the
from
the
federal
level
and
the
state
level.
Four
cities
all
around
state
and
all
around
the
nation,
quite
frankly,
has
dried
up
and
consequently,
the
dollars
that
used
to
be
around
to
help
cities
and
hire
the
people
to
to
do.
The
remediation
work
has
have
disappeared.

That
was
largely
funded
in
many
respects
by
the
federal
government
that
has
largely
dried
up,
we're
here
as
a
collective
to
begin
that
push
to
start
driving,
meet
more
resources
and
put
the
appropriate
public
policy
in
place
to
get
the
work
done.
That
has
to
be
done
that
our
children
are
required
to
do.
