Here, State Representative Donna Bullock (195th District) discusses her legislative efforts on lead safety and her personal family experiences with lead contamination.

Good morning last week I introduced the resolution to recognize october 23rd talks over 29 as national lead poisoning prevention week little did. I know that the story was going to be coming out the following weekend.

Last March or April, my colleagues and I representative Cruz representative schlosberg, introduced a package of bills in the house to address lead poisoning in our state. The package included lead testing for daycares testing of water supply, requiring a testing at a certain age of our children to test their blood levels, as well as as Senator Heywood mentioned.

Putting some costs on that on the bottom line for landlords, in which landlords who do not abate lead in their properties would have to pay a fine and that fine would be submitted to a fund called the leading home abatement fund. Those bills are still sitting in the house.

The reason why I was so passionate about that is because, unlike representative Donna Tucci, my son was tested with love in his blood while visiting his grandmother as an infant. Many days during the week in his home in her home of Strawberry Mansion, he was regulated to a certain window sill, where grandma said you can paint in color and stick her as much as you want.

Just don't write on the rest of my walls and it is likely that window sill where he was exposed to lead, but he was still lucky and my family is still lucky because we caught it early and we were able to make sure we supplement his diet, provide iron pills and take care of grandma's home. Not many families are as resourceful as lucky as ours.

That's why I, together with my colleagues, both at the House, the Senate here in City Council and our soon-to-be congressman, we will work together to do something not just for my son, but for every little boy and little girl across the city of Philadelphia, so that can the healthy and productive lives and I look forward to working with them.
