Synopsis: Let's face it: the PowerShell ISE is deprecated, and we PowerShell automation scripters need a new authoring and debugging environment. In this one-hour tutorial, Tim Warner gives you all the information and skills you need to get productive with VSCode for PowerShell development right here, right now, with no unnecessary filler.

as

that's
why
I'm
sharing
my
desktop
directly
and
let's
get
right
into
this.
The
reason
why
you're
here
I
would
imagine
is
that
you've
heard
the
news
about
the
PowerShell.
Ise
is
no
longer
under
active
development.
Jeffery
Snover
seems
to
not
use
the
word
deprecated,
but
by
all
accounts,
that
seems
to
be
the
case
with
the
software.

all
roads
are
illegal,
Visual,
Studio
code,
and
you
might,
if
you
are
like
me,
after
having
used
the
is
equal
Ungh
time
and
invested
a
lot
of
blood
and
sweat
and
tears
learning
Powers
dealt
with
it.
You
might
have
been
resistant
to
switching
over
to
a
new
editor.
It
is
true
that
Visual
Studio
code
started
off
a
little
bumpy.
In
fact,
I'm
kind
of
glad
I
resisted
it
for
a
while,
because
it's
had
a
chance
to
mature
and
it's
really
a
nice
editor
now
and
it's
great
for
working
in
PowerShell.

So,
let's
get
right
to
it.
One
site
you
should
be
aware
of
is
code
Visual,
Studio
com.
This
is
the
project's
public
homepage
and,
as
you
see,
it'll
detect
your
OS
I'm
on
Windows
10
machine.
This
is
open
source
cross-platform
software.
You
can
get
the
stable
release
or
what's
called
the
insiders,
build
for
production
workstations.
Of
course,
I
would
go
for
stable
rather
than
insiders
and
as
I
said,
this
is
open
source,
so
you
can
actually
contribute
to
the
vs
codebase
if
you're
so
inclined.

And
github
repository
they
don't
even
have
to
merge
it
from
what
I
understand
they'll
give
you
a
free
t-shirt,
it's
kind
of
an
incentive
to
get
involved,
so
that's
kind
of
cool
I
downloaded
the
software
and
I.
Have
it
on
my
desktop
here.
I
would
suggest
that
you
install
git
first,
although
actually
I
take
that
back,
because
I
tried
that
just
the
other
day
get
in
case,
you
don't
know,
is
pretty
much
industry
standard
source
code
version
control
software
and
it
integrates
fully
into
V
code.
Get
SCM.

Dot-Com
is
the
home
page
for
that
at
least
the
Installer
that
I
use
on
my
Windows
systems.
The
issue
I
saw
with
installing
git
for
Windows
is
that.
Well,
if
you
choose
Visual
Studio
code,
is
your
default?
Editor
it'll,
a
lot
of
magically?
Excuse
me
install
vs
code,
and
it
didn't
even
give
me
the
most
recent
version.
I
mean
it's
not
a
deal-breaker,
but
I
guess
if
you're
going
to
start
from
scratch,
I
would
install
vs
code
first
and
then
do
get.

This
is
weird
I
wonder
why
it's
saying
that
it's
already
installed
on
this
system.
I
wanted
to
actually
walk
through
the
full
installer.
One
thing
you'll
might
have
noticed
is
that
I'm
not
being
prompted
for
administrative
privilege?
This
project
is
under
constant
renovation,
the
Microsoft
developers
and
community
developers
around
the
world
who
are
contributing
to
vs
code,
obviously
subscribe
to
continuous
integration
and
almost
continuous
deployment.
If
you
look
at
their
releases
page,
they
average
at
least
two
I
would
say
releases
per
month.

it's
very
agile
software,
the
installer
process,
I,
don't
know
why
it
wants
to
go
into
this
path.
I,
don't
know.
What's
going
on
here.
There
is
one
page
I
wanted
to
show
you
in
particular,
and
it's
this
one:
the
additional
tasks,
just
by
way
of
convenience.
There's
a
couple
conveniences
here
that
are
cool
I,
like
these
context
options
here
that
go
into
the
Explorer
context
menu,
because
that
way
you
can
right-click
any
file
type
pretty
much
as
long
as
it's
text
or
text,
fish
and
right-click
and
open
with
code.

other
is
add
to
path
is
nice
because
the
executable
for
v/s
code
is
drumroll,
please
code,
and
it's
nice.
If
you
have
the
executable
in
your
search
path,
I'm
going
to
right
click,
the
start
button
and
go
to
run
and
just
try
this,
because
code
is
telling
me
it's
already
installed,
I'm
going
to
type
code,
my
script,
dot,
ps1
and
it
kicks
off
an
instance
of
cmd.exe,
while
windows
figures
out
exactly
what
do
next
yeah
it
looks
like
I
am
already
installed.

that's
fine,
we'll
just
keep
rolling
with
this,
and
just
like
you
would
expect.
If
you
did
the
same
thing
with
notepad,
we
see
the
application
and
it's
loaded
up
our
file
now
I
haven't
installed
any
extensions.
Yet
if
we
come
over
here
to
what
I
think
Microsoft
calls,
the
action
bar
you've
got
different
views
and
the
bottom
one
is
really
the
heart
and
soul
of
vs
codes
extensibility,
and
it's
going
to
be
our
net
very
next
step.
Actually
we're
going
to
want
to
type
PowerShell.

What
happens
is
as
long
as
you
have
an
internet
connection,
you're
connected
to
the
visual
studio
marketplace
and
in
order
to
really
give
vs
code
powershell
intelligence,
we
need
microsoft's
own
extension.
Now,
just
like
the
powershell
Gallery,
the
Visual
Studio
Gallery
has
Microsoft
and
non-microsoft
packages
there.
So
there
is
the
caveat
emptor
issue,
but
PowerShell
is
a
Microsoft
project.
As
you
can
see
right
here,
you
get
a
readme
file,
changelog
dependencies.
It's
a
lot
of
good
information
rolled
on
this
page,
integrated
right
into
vs
code.

me
switch
my
editor
in
the
visual
studio
code
nomenclature.
These
tabs
are
referred
to
as
editors
and
you'll
also
see
in
the
lower-right
extensions
vs
code
will
pop
up
little
dialogs
from
time
to
time.
It
can
get
a
little
chatty
from
time
to
time.
I
want
you
to
see
in
the
lower
right
there's
a
lot
of
very
useful
information
here
in
the
status
bar
visual
studio
code.
Is
a
code
editor.
It's
a
multi-language
editor
we're
looking
at
PowerShell
tonight,
obviously,
and
so
code,
as
you
would
expect,
is
going
to
detect
ps1
PSM.

default

Extensions

code
will
realize
that
it's
dealing
with
PowerShell
and
it'll
do
everything
it
can
to
start
helping
you
you
see
down
here.
This
is
actually
a
button.
It
allows
you
to
choose
the
language
mode,
because
if
you
open
a
file
type
that
vs
code
doesn't
isn't
fully
cognizant
of,
you
can
either
explicitly
choose
a
mode
here
or
what
you'll
do
is
go
over
here
and
extension
and
do
a
search
and
chances
are
there's
an
extension
that
has
an
engine
to
support
your
language.

I
want
to
come
back

we
want
to
install
PowerShell
this
really
supercharges
vs
code.

menu

that's

and
come
all
the

If
the
text
is
too
small
here
you
can
always
load
this
up
on
your
system
and
it's
basically
a
little
more
than
trivia,
but
I.
Think
it's
interesting.
Visual
studio
code
is
an
electron
application.
A
Electron
is
a
application
framework
for
building
desktop
apps
using
web
technologies
like
html5
and
JavaScript
and
CSS
it's
a
github
project
and,
of
course,
now
microsoft
owns
github,
so
I
guess
it's
a
Microsoft
platform,
but
the
front
end
is
actually
chromium.
The
open
source,
Google
Chrome
browser
it's
running,
node
jf.
In
the
background,
it's
using
the
Google
v8
JavaScript
engine,
so
Visual
Studio
code
is
a
desktop
app
that
really
edits
hard
as
a
web
application.

Guess
that's
21st
century,
for
you,
isn't
it
when
you
load
an
extension.

normally
need
to
reload
so
I'm
going
to
click
the
reload
button
and
it
will
restart
the
application
and
we'll
see
some
things
that
we
might
not
have
seen
earlier
number
one.
You
see
the
console
or
the
terminal.
It's
called
the
integrated
terminal.
Now,
the
last
time
when
Mike
referenced
me
presenting
this
the
last
time
it
was
at
a
PowerShell
Saturday
in
Chattanooga.
This
terminal
menu
wasn't
even
in
the
software.
So
this
I
find
vs
code
is
very
similar
to
a
j''r
and
other
Microsoft
products
that
are
just
iterating
and
evolving
so
quickly.

Now
you
can
get
a
lot
of
good
options
here
in
the
terminal
menu.
If
you
happen
to
close
it,
you
can
always
bring
it
back
up
here
with
new
terminal
and
just
like
any
self-respecting
Windows
desktop
application.
You
see
the
default
key
binding
will
have
more
to
say
about
that.
As
we
go
along.
Let
me
bring
that
terminal
back
and
again.
We
see
a
little
help
here.
That
says
we
can
change
the
default
terminal,
shell
by
selecting
the
customize
button.
Well,
that's
true,
but
also
can
come
down
here
to
the
status
bar
and

language
mode
button
it

you're

machine,

core

and
if
you
install
PowerShell
core
on
that
machine,
it'll
show
up
as
another
language
that
you
can
target
and
momentarily.
When
we
get
into
debugging,
you
can
create
multiple
debug
configurations
targeting
either
desktop
or
PS
core,
as
you
go
along
okay.

like
you
would

input

Sometimes
if
it
gets
stuck,
I
found
that
Visual
Studio
code
will
sometimes
get
a
little
choked
up
with
parameter,
sets

shortcut
is
control
space,
that'll
kind
of
reinitialize,
the
code
complete.
So
you
can
try
another
set
of
parameters,
whatever
the
case
may
be.

as
running

code,

notice

nothing
happened,
and
you
might
notice
that
the
fonts
a
little
small
we're
going
to
correct
that

merrily

along

navigation
bar,

I
had

first
started

code

alright.

testing
a
function

run

whole

How
do
I
do
that?
Well,
one
thing
that
that
I
did
to
start
with
it
was
kind
of
overkill,
is
I
found
an
extension
called
code
runner.
This
is
actually
a
really
cool
extension,
it's
multi-language,
so
you
can
use
it
for
other
languages
besides
powershell
if
you
want
to,
but
it
really
puts
code
execution
on
steroids.
It'll,
give
you
a
little
toolbar
button
like
a
little
Run
button.

Like
you
see
in
the
ISE
and
by
default,
that
will
run
your
entire
current
file,
but
you
can
also
customize
it
to
run
the
file
in
a
new
powershell
session.
If
you
want
to
get
out
of
the
current
run
space,
it
just
gives
you
additional
options.
That's
one
huge
advantage.
I
think
vs
code
has
over
ISE.
Ifc
has
extensibility
with
the
script
pane.
In
fact,
I
still
kind
of
miss
Tobias
veldt
nurs,
is
you
steroids.

haven't
found
anything
anywhere
near
that
pervasive
in
vs
code,
yet,
but
other
than
that
I
mean
the
fact
that
you
can
find
an
extension
to
do
just
about
anything
is
really
powerful.
Ok,
alright,
so
to
run
the
entire
file.
To
get
back
to
my
original
point,
we
can
go
to
terminal
and
there's
a
run
active
file
option
and
you
notice
it's
blank
and
the
menu.
That
means
we're
going
to
have
to
write
a
key
binding
if
you
want
to
do
a
shortcut
to
run
the
file
down
here
in
the
in
the
lower
terminal.

were
a
script
that
you
wanted
to
run,
I,
don't
think
I've
saved
it
yet.
So

me

button
I
mentioned
that
the
bug
takes
you
into
the
debugger.
The
next
one
up
is
for
your
source,
control
and

have
installed
get,
even
though
it
says
there
are
no
active
source
control
providers.

have
installed,
yet
it
doesn't
kick
in
until
you're
working
with
a
folder
on
which
you've
enabled
get
version
control.

cool,
it
can
do
global
search
and
replace
across
multiple
files,
and
the
search
allows
you
to
do
regular
expressions
as
well
as

matches

order
to
take
advantage
of
this
search,

then
your
folders.
If
you've
worked
in
Visual
Studio,
the
idea
is
somewhat
similar
here
you
can
actually
save
this
as
a
workspace
and
it
gets
saved
I'll
call
it
my
workspace
as
a
code
workspace
file.
Let
me

if
I

extension
on
that
hiding
extensions
on
the
system.

command
palette
starts
with
a

than
symbol,
and
so,
if

lose

than
symbol,
you
instead

list

default
key
binding
for
that
is
ctrl
P,
and
this
is
useful.
If
you
have
a
bunch
of
file
editors
open
and
you
want
to
quickly
go
between
them,
ctrl
P,
and
then
you
can
arrow
or
tab
through
ENTER
and
switch.
You
see
what
I
mean
again.

tool
is
designed
for
fast
keyboard
access,
but
you
can
come
back
to
the
command
palette
by
using
the

to

work

be
pre-built
