Description
Command-line utilities are great. But they don’t follow PowerShell patterns. They don’t produce objects and they don’t support the pipeline. They output to the console and that’s the end of the line. Or is it? Learn how you can bring the benefits of PowerShell to your command-line utilities.
Help us start the New Year as we dive into how those old school command-line tools we all have and new-school PowerShell cmdlets and scripts can work together to make things better than if you only used one of those tools alone.
Our speaker this month is Ryan Leap from Cary, NC. Ryan is a local RTPSUG member and sysdmin. Ryan excels at making efficient, well-thought out tools that do something no one has thought of before and using his tools in interesting ways.
Ryan's talk this month is a recap of the talk he did at the RTPSUG PowerShell Saturday in September. His talk was a fan favorite, and we wanted to share his knowledge with the greater PowerShell community.

is
it?
Is
it
amplifies
our
productivity
right,
so
things
that
you
know
maybe
before
you
became
familiar
with
PowerShell
that
were
either
out
of
reach
or
really
you
know
hard
to
accomplish?
You
know
you
now
can
can
knock
out
and
you
can
do
it
at
scale.

and
so
that's
why
we
might
love
it,
but
you
know
how
does
it
do
this?
What
what
about?
What
is
this
sort
of
the
the
magic
of
PowerShell
that
amplifies
our
productivity-
and
you
know,
I-
think
that
I've
kind
of
honed
in
on
these
these
these
things
that
that
are
true
about
PowerShell,
that
that
do
this
for
us?
So
one
you
know
it's
predictable,
so
the
design
guys
the
the
Jeffrey,
Stover
and
and
and
the
team
at
Microsoft.

They
had
all
this
experience
with
other
shells
and
other
programming
languages
over
the
years
and
they
said:
hey
we're
gonna
establish
a
naming
convention,
we're
gonna,
stick
to
that
naming
convention
as
best
we
can,
and
on
top
of
that,
with
this
verb
now
we're
gonna
limit
the
verbs
that
you
use
and
so
us
as
administrators.
We
don't
have
to
do
a
total
guessing
game
when
we're
trying
to
find
a
command
because
there's
a
known
naming
convention
and
there's
a
limited
set
of
verbs
which
act
on
nouns.

And
so,
if
we
start
to
become
familiar
with
some
of
the
verbs,
then
we
know
what
verbs
might
act
on
a
noun
in
us.
In
a
particular
way-
and
so
just
you
know
a
real
quick
show
of
that
right
so
if
I

get
command

you
just
start
seeing
verbs
and
nouns
right
coming
coming
across
the
screen,
because
that's
the
way
they've
done
the
commandments

are
on

they
follow

these
naming
conventions,
and
you
know
it
being
an
object
based
system.
There
are
a
ton
of
commandlets
that
get
something
and
a
ton
of
Commandments
that
set
something
right,
but
okay.
So
anyway,
this
is
the
prescribed
naming
convention
and
by
and
large
folks
try
to
stick
to
it,
and
that
makes
you
and
I
more
productive,
because
when
we
learn
you
know
here,
you
know
when
we
learn
that
stop
is
the
verb
to
stop
something
we
can
say:
get
command.

not

good

system
with
that

not
come
with
any

the
help
is
very
terse
and-

kind

lose,

the

productivity.

because
it
goes

some

Instead

into

into

away
