Think you’re good with code? Join us for a fun night of scripting challenges that range from simple to challenging! Our guest speaker for the evening is the author and creator of the “Month of Lunches” series of PowerShell learning books, Jeff Hicks!
We asked Jeff to come up with some challenges to help our members learn fresh ways to do some common script tasks. Jeff is a master at finding interesting ways to challenge individuals on how to use PowerShell code to its fullest potential.
Jeff has designed eight separate challenges for attendees to solve. In this presentation we do these puzzles together, interactively and share the results. The goal here is to help people learn alternative ways to do common tasks and highlight the fact that there are multiple solutions to solve a riddle.

than
anything.
These
are
questions
that
someone
might
come
to
you
and
say:
hey.
Can
I
need
powershell
to
do
x,
so
these
are
we're
going
to
start
really
really
simple,
okay,
so
the
first
couple
ones
should
take
you
no
more
than
a
minute
or
two
to
finish
and
then
they'll
get
progressively
harder.

not
doing
really
any
scripting
per
se,
you're,
not
writing
codes
or
functions
or
scripts,
or
anything
like
that.
You're
just
coming
up
with
one
or
two
powershell
commands
that
you
could
type
out
interact
with
the
console
to
answer

question

to
solve
the
problem,
and
this
is
so
answer.
The
answer
to
the
problem
is
not
the
point.
It's
how
you
figured
out
how
to
get
to
that
answer.
That's
where
you
learn
powershell
and
start
building
up
your
powershell
muscles.

It's
just
that
you
have
to
use
powershell
every
day
and
I've
encountered
this
all
the
time
when
I'm
teaching
or
presenting
people
say
yeah.
I've
learned
powershell
I've

through
like
the
first.
You
know
month
of
lunches
books,
but
I
don't
know
what
to
do
with
it.
So
this
is
something
that
you
can
do
with
it.

you
may
not
have
an
immediate
need
at
work
to
use
powershell,
but
use
some
of
these
little
puzzles.
That's
why
I
wrote
the
powershell
practice
primer,
which
you
can
find
up

leave
up.
It's
a
hundred
exercises

beginner
powershell
people
same
type
of
thing.

the
course
of
figuring
out
that
problem?

how
you're
going
to
learn
and
improve
your
powershell
skills.

recommend

code.

you
can
keep
a
record
of
what
you're
doing,

if
you
just
have

powershell
console,
you
should
be
fine
again
we're
not
writing
scripts.

answers

puzzles
are
not
limited
to
one
line
commands,
although
some
might
be
most
of
them
should
be
solved
with
a
few
lines
of
partial
code
that
you
could
run
interactively
at
the
prompt,
we're
not
scripting

find
it
easier
to
work
in
an
editor
like
vs
code
or
the
ic
all
right.

the
first
question
here
is:

simple:

your
computer

solve

at
most

other
things,

can
use

these
lessons
for
other

that's

appreciated
in

some

the
work
that
you've
done

seen
multiple
parts
of
that
lesson.

working
with
powershell,
it
doesn't
matter

object
is.
It
could
be
services,
it
could
be
a
sharepoint
site,
it
could
be
a
sql
database,

be
something
from
office.

and
techniques
are
all
going
to
be
the
same
all

can
work

attempted

before

we
compared
our
notes,
and
it
was
interesting
that
phil
and
I
usually
had
the
same
tact
to
sort
of
solve
an
issue,
but
our
syntax
looked
different
just
because
the
way

normally
type
things
as
a
command
prompt.
So
with
the
luxury
of
time
I
went
for
the
more
prettier
code
and
phil
went
for
the
more
like
just
get.

efficient
way

is

easy
for
somebody
to
read

figure
out.

pipe

you're
doing
it's
very
easily
readable

optimize

code

fastest,

sometimes
I

no
choice

backpick
just

that's

only
way

can
get

code
to
format
you

in
the
printed
page,
but
that
that's
a

only
applies
to
me

enter

pipe.
Now
some
people
like
to
write
code
like
that,
so
they'll
do
a
pipe
they'll,
do
the
command
pipe
and
then
the
next
line,
so
every
command
ends
in

piped
expression.

around

select
object,

find
that
the
more

write

more

to

splatting

compare
yourself

co-workers,
because
everybody

sort
of
the

person
that
wants

learn

putting

extra

person

excelling,

may
never
realize
how
far
you've
come
yourself.

line

it's
the
name
number
of
parameter
sets
and
the
total
number
of
lines.

way

again

get
child
item
for
the
function.
Ps
drive,
sorting
on
the
source
and
name
now
the
source
will
be
if
it's
in
a
module
or
whatnot,
and
then
I'm
going
to
create
a
formatted
report
grouped
by
the
source,
and
then
the
properties
will
have
those
same
custom
properties
that
I
just
created.

gives
me
a
nicer
report
based
upon
the
module
that
it
comes
from.
So
like
the
my
tickle,
this
is
one
of
my
