Our first presenter, Jeremy Brown, will be walking us through techniques that can be used to optimize data lookups for Active Directory and Group Policy!
Most admins and developers have some level of working knowledge of Active Directory and Group Policies. One of A/D's greatest strengths is it's flexibility. However, performing large-scale searching in AD and GPO can be very slow and cumbersome.
Jeremy is a sysadmin who has many years of experience supporting Active Directory and related services and he has found methods to search for data much faster than using the default methods and how to find that small morsel of data you need from a mountain of AD and GPO data.
Our second presenter, Mark Hutchinson, will be showing us the power available when using REGEX as a search method. REGEX has long been a taboo subject for many IT professionals and Mark is here to dispel those rumors and show the benefits of learning how to leverage REGEX.
Mark is a consultant who specializes in building solutions for small to medium businesses and teaching technology to the masses.

objects

linked

put
that
all
back
together
in
a
brand
new
domain
and
something
I'd
mimic.
But
the
production
was
like,
and

you
always
test
with
and
hundred
objects.

that
admin
didn't
run
into
problems
till
he
said
it's
time
to
move
the
users
and
it
took

Remember
right,
two
and
a
half
three
weeks
to
get
all
of
the
user
objects
out
of

domain,

production
domain
and
into
the
plus
terminal,
and
that's
when
I
learned
that
a
tws
was
very
slow,
so
I
thought
I
might
give
a
short
talk
on
that
and
then
always
conversations
I
have
a
neat
way
of
finding
GPO
stuff
and
people
are
like.

I'd
also
give
a
short

that

So
yeah
I
didn't
really
personally
learn
or
realize.
Just
like
you
I
knew
that
you
know
the
Edit

It
goes

Active
Directory
Web
Services,
so
there's
there's
a
layer
between
you
and
Active
Directory.
That
has
to
be
mediated
in
order
for
your
your
work
to
get
done
and
I've
never
really
thought
about.

kind
of
impact
happens
on
that,
because
typically
we're
just
getting
a
user
or
ten
or
twelve
users
or
something
smaller
and
then
doing
action
on
those
users
and
we're
not
doing
it
at
such
a
large
scale.
So
you
don't
really
get
to
feel
the
difference
in
those
numbers
that
it
was
only
then
that
I
learned
that
wow.
This
is
really
a
big
performative,
and
so
now
I
still
use
Active
Directory
toolkit
every
day.

not
saying
that
it's
a
bad
thing
and
we
shouldn't
use
it,
but
I'm
saying
that
we
should
probably
understand
the
technologies
that
were
interacting
with
in
a
way
that
allows
us
to
make
smart
decisions
for
how
we're
going
to
interact
with
it.
So
Active
Directory
toolkit
on
the
you
know,
on
the
daily
I
just
need
to
go,
get
something
real
fast,
remove
some
things
in
a
new
group.
You
know
I
need
to
go
edit,
some
user
properties.
That
text
and
that's
really
a
very
select
group
of
things,
80
toolkit
or
80.

Active
Directory
module-
is
a
really
easy
way
to
do
that.
But
if
you're
going
to
start
moving
in
and
doing
things
at
a
larger
scale
for
some
other
reason
like
making
a
test
domain,
the
80
module
is
probably
not
your
best
solution
to
that
problem.
So
I
was
going
to
steal
the
work
that
I
had
done
to
make.
That
domain,
but
I,
don't
have
it
when
I
left
into
State
University.
So
this
weekend,
I
just
threw
some
stuff
together.
Real
fast
I
wanted
to
first
show
you
what
it
looks
like.

what
I
did
is
I
did
whip
up
a
very
empty
domain
with
a
lot
of
objects
in
it.
So
if
we
take
a
look,
I
hydrated
this
domain
with
a
handful
of
different
departments,
so
there's
a
finance
department,
H
RIT,
a
sales
department
and
then
I
made
this
keeper.
Oh
you
that
has
around
250,000
user
objects
on
so
and
you'll
know
that,
because
there
you
go
well,
apparently
it's
a
approximately
80,000
user
objects
in
it.
I'm
feel
like
it's
more
than
that
I
think
ad.

So
you
know
I'm
cheating
a
little
bit
here:
I
guess
since
I'm,
just
going
to
store
about
two
user
objects
in
a
variable
and
then
I
can
work
through
those.
So
you,

idea
is
typically

somewhere
else
to
start
with
and
loving
and
getting
it
from
a

need
to

Take
that

to

that,
instead
of
going
through
a
tws
once
you
have
this
data,

can
get
that
user
and
set
those
properties
through
just
a
normal
LDAP
call
and
it
will
be
considerably
faster.
So
my
goal
is
to
show
that
so
here
is
what
we're
going
to
do
right
so
for
each
user
in
users.

we
want
to
set
the
name
to
be
the
distinguished
name
and
then
go
get
each
of
those
users
right.
So
this
would
essentially
give
us
the
DM
and
to
all
of
those
same
users
which
is
making
we
would
be
getting
the
same
thing
out
of
get
a
tea
user
right,
except
if
I
go
run
this
one.
It's
already
done
so
it
took
164
millisecond
versus
the
47
seconds
left
hot.

still

passing
an
LDAP
filter
through
80
WS
to
get
my
user

through
the
abstraction.

why
I
wanted
to
point
this

the
filter.
That's
the
slow

the
web
service!

the
flow
part.
So
the
fact
that
we
still
have
to
go
through
the
web
service
creates
the
long
wait.

going

be

you're
only
getting
a
couple
things
back,
you
don't
really
feel
that
it's
fine,
like
you,
can
get
in
and
out
of
that
in
seconds,
and
you
don't
have
that
feeling
of
weight
to
it.
But
when
you
start
having
too,
with
large
groups
of
users
at
a
time
so
which
at
state
I
would
did
this
often
I
would
have
to
go.
Make
changes
to
a
swath
of
users
at
one
time.
So
you
feel
that
way
that
that's
a
long
time
to
sit
here
and
wait
on
something
to
come
back.

slow
cause,
you
have
to
do
what
it
should
be
about
the
same.
So
what
I
did
is
I
ran
here
and
you
can
see
179
in
19
seconds

seconds,
so
there
was
a
difference
of
70
milliseconds
between
the
two.
So
meanwhile,
the
measure
command
was
a
total
of
23

we
have
a
really
big
difference

choosing
to
search
from
the
root
of
the
domain,
but
we
don't
have
to
do
that.

second
parameter
or
hard
code
that,
through
our
function,
just
by
choosing
to
have
build

search
route
at
a
certain
level

where
this
